Watering a lawn can do more harm than good if the lawn is not watered correctly. Excessive watering is a waste of water and can cost homeowners money while harming the environment at the same time. Water that is not absorbed by the lawn can result in runoff, which causes nitrogen in the grass, any fertilizer that was applied and chemicals in the water itself to run into gutters and eventually pollute streams, rivers and oceans. In addition, grass needs oxygen in the soil to grow properly. But when a lawn is overwatered, the oxygen between the soil particles is pushed out, depriving roots of the oxygen they need to grow in strong. This leads to shallow root systems, which make a lawn more susceptible to stress, disease and insect infestation. But overwatering can also be unsightly, as lawns that are overwatered tend to have more weeds, robbing even the greenest of lawns of its aesthetic appeal.

Browsing The Archives By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Last week marked another mini-milestone in my time here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, my 450th In Step column. I have to admit, I only realized this a few days ago while randomly perusing the archives, brainstorming for ideas, and I suppose it would stand to reason, seeing as I’m coming upon my 9th anniversary working here… but still, it seems like just yesterday that I tentatively submitted my first column for consideration, as a “trial run” of sorts. The rest, as they say, is history. Fast forward to the present day, as I’m in the process of

putting together a presentation for my alma mater, discussing the path I took to achieve my career aspirations, the ten years that have elapsed since being in the comfortable confines of a classroom, and all that has transpired along the way. Not that I saw it as such a clear-cut path at the time, but I suppose we rarely do when we’re in the midst of the daily madness of responsibilities and obligations and all that fun stuff. Ten years is a long time, and much has changed in the interim, to be sure; but just as much remains the same. It takes the benefit of perspective to take stock of where you’ve been, where you’re going and, perhaps most importantly,

where you’re at now. We tend to forget that part, so consumed are we by reminiscing over the good ole’ days and looking forward to the next stage. It’s funny, too, when you look back, to realize that so much is pre-planned for us while still in school, such is the structure of the academic world. But once you graduate, it’s a whole new spectrum of possibilities. It just takes some planning and preparation to maximize that potential and avoid becoming complacent. There’s no bell schedule to dictate our next move, no breakdown of semesters… just us, on our own, finding our way in the great beyond. Here’s to the next milestone!

When people think of outdoor storage, they generally envision garden sheds to house their lawn and garden equipment and tools. However, if space doesn’t allow for a large shed, there is no need to fret because there are other storage possibilities. Consider a garden ottoman or bench, for example. This structure can be built from wood and then painted or covered in padded fabric. Store small items inside the ottoman, which can also serve as a table or additional seating. In addition to an ottoman, a garden tool that can keep shovels and rakes organized. Homeowners with a deck can construct lidded deck boxes to store patio cushions or any other outdoor equipment. Utilizing the space under the deck is another idea. Cover the perimeter of the bottom of the deck with lattice and install one piece on a hinge to serve as a door. Store equipment underneath and out of sight. It also will be protected from the elements.

Spring has sprung, and there are many activities to enjoy now that the warmer weather has arrived. Many homeowners make the most of warmer weather by tackling projects around their properties. While autumn is a better time to overseed a lawn for new growth, satisfactory results still can be had if seeding is done early enough in the spring. Grass needs ample time to establish roots and grow strong before the summer heat takes its toll. Many types of grass need six to 12 weeks of ideal temperatures and growing conditions to germinate and produce a sturdy grass that will grow and endure. Seeding can be done to rejuvenate an existing lawn and fill in bare spots. It also can be done to start a lawn from scratch. The following are some tips to help make seeding projects more successful. • Begin by raking the lawn to remove thatch and

any fallen leaves leftover from autumn and winter. Raking also enables you to inspect the lawn for bare patches or matting of grass that may be indicative of a fungus or other problem. • Dust off the mower and trim the lawn short, especially if it was left long at the end of last season. This will help seed penetrate the blades of grass and get to the soil beneath. • High-traffic lawns may need aeration to counteract compacted soil. Moss on the ground is often an indication of compaction. Aeration will help with this problem, as it pokes holes into the soil to enable oxygenation that keeps new grass robust and promotes faster growth. Lawn aerators can be rented from many garden centers. • Spread a mixture of topsoil and compost over the top of the lawn. This will add nutrients through organic matter to the lawn

Broadcast spreaders will cast seed widely and may need some overlap to guarantee complete coverage. • Spread another thin layer of compost mix over the seed and water thoroughly. Calling All Picassos Suffolk County Legislator Lou D’Amaro is pleased to extend an invitation to Deer Park, Half Hollow Hills, Huntington, North Babylon and South Huntington elementary school students to participate in the 17th Legislative District and Suffolk County Legislature’s Be Pool Smart poster contest. Established in 2007, the competition invites elementary school students to promote the importance of pool safety by creating a poster that illustrates one or more safety tips. One poster is selected from all of those submitted to be used as part of a countywide message from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services in its seasonal safety campaign. “The ‘Be Pool Smart’ poster contest is a fun way to engage children in spreading the important messages about how a few simple steps and precautions can help us avoid tragedies around swimming pools,” said Legislator D’Amaro. Last year, Deer Park student Juliana Gentile’s entry was the Suffolk County winner. Initially, Juliana’s

colorful and creative design was named District 17 winner and then was selected by the non-partisan Legislature’s Budget Review Office as the County winner. Her winning design can currently be seen on the Suffolk County Department of Health Services Countywide brochure, and she was honored, along with her family and teachers, before the full Suffolk County Legislature at a General Meeting. Each contest participant received a Certificate of Distinguished Achievement, presented to them at a ceremony at their respective schools. The contest is open to all elementary school students. Interested students should create a poster, no larger than 22” x 30,” with the title “Be Pool Smart.” It should creatively illustrate one of more the following ten safety tips: • Make sure children under five years of age are always within “arms reach” when in or near the water • Be watchful of all children at all times • Teach older children to always swim with a buddy

• Never leave children of any age alone in or near the water • Remove steps and take toys away from the pool area when it is not in use • Remove the pool cover completely • Keep a first aid kit stocked and hear the pool • Teach children how to dial 9-1-1 and how to get help in an emergency • Learn to swim • Obtain CPR certification The child’s name, age, grade, school and teacher’s name should be attached to the back of the poster and it can be dropped off at Legislator D’Amaro’s district office, 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station. Pruning trees and shrubs is necessary to ensure they maintain their health and vigor. Trees and shrubs should be inspected annually to determine if they need to be pruned. Mature trees typically do not need to be pruned as frequently as young trees, which need pruning to establish branch structure. Trees and shrubs that go years without pruning can become overgrown and weak. In addition to promoting tree and shrub health, pruning pays a host of other dividends. • Pruning removes dead or diseased branches. Pruning helps a tree or shrub maintain its shape and vigor by removing broken, dead or diseased branches that can be unsightly and make it more difficult for the tree or shrub to stay healthy. For months, I have been anxiously awaiting March 27th. This Thursday, known as “Ivy Day,” has historically been when top tier colleges release their admissions decisions. As I am writing this, I am hours away from Ivy Day. Serving as the culmination of years of hard work, the final word from these prestigious institutions has been long awaited. If even one of the colleges that I have applied to admits me, I will have succeeded in my goal. An acceptance would serve as positive affirmation that my hard work has not gone unnoticed. However, in the likely event that I am

inundated with rejections, I know that everything will work out the way that it is meant to. I am a firm believer in God’s plan. After months of thinking, I have finally justified the idea that I do not need an Ivy League education to be successful. Not everyone who attends a great school is happy in life. Education is just an ingredient in the recipe for success. Hard work and motivation also play major roles. If everything works out the way I hope, I will be accepted. With that being said, a rejection is not condemnation. At this point, I know that I will end up where I need to

be. Everything is out of my hands, and I can only hope that the admissions officers have chosen to admit me. My father once instilled in me a great mantra. He preached the idea that, “If you can handle it, don’t worry about it; and if you can’t handle it, don’t worry about it.” I know that there is nothing I can do this late in the game to sway a decision. There is no sense in fretting. I can only hope. As I count down the minutes until Ivy Day, I will try not to think about the impending, life altering decision. Next week, I hope to share good news with you all!

Education Endowment At the March 20th Elwood School District Board of Education meeting, representatives from the Elwood Education Endowment awarded close to $38,000 in grant funding to teachers throughout the district. The EEE’s sole mission is to provide educational opportunities to Elwood students in grades K-12 that are not funded through the district’s annual operating budget. The grants were awarded to 15 teachers throughout the district, who each applied for funding earlier in the school year. The EEE evaluates applications based on a variety of factors, including how the proposed project enhances and enriches educational opportunities for Elwood students. According to Kathleen Koster, president of the EEE, “This year’s grants share the common elements of innovation, technology and the demands brought on by the implementation of the Common Core standards. Local Girl Does Good

Most kids see a beach as a place to play in the sand or go for a swim. For nine year old Madeleine Cierski of Northport, she sees an opportunity to make a difference. While taking one of her many walks at Crab Meadow Beach with her family last fall, Madeleine noticed that

several sand sharks had been discarded and left to die along the beach. Obviously upset, Madeleine set out to make a change. Her love and passion for animals and for all living things inspired her to put a pen to paper and write a letter to the Town asking for help. “It is not every day you come across a letter from a nine-year old student asking their local government to create a rule, or in this case, a law, to help protect marine life,” Councilman Mark Cuthbertson said. Upon investigation, the councilman learned that under existing Marine Fisheries Law, certain species of fish and marine life, when caught unintentionally, are not required to be returned to the waters they are taken from. Sand sharks, formally known as smooth dogfish, are one such species not protected under current law. However, the Councilman also learned that the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is considering a change to the law to expand protective

measures. Late last week, Councilman Cuthbertson paid a surprise visit to Madeleine’s classroom at Bellerose Elementary School to thank her and advise her of his plan to help Huntington’s sand sharks. “It was my pleasure to notify Madeleine and her classmates that I would be sponsoring a sense resolution at the upcoming April 8th Town Board meeting urging the Governor and New York State Legislature to amend the Marine Fisheries Law to afford sand sharks greater protection,” the Councilman said. “All the credit goes to Madeleine.” Councilman Cuthbertson was joined by Madeleine’s parents and younger sister during last week’s classroom visit, along with school’s Principal and Vice Principal. “Madeleine has taught us all an invaluable lesson – each and every one of us can make a difference,” the Councilman said.

Tulip Festival Set The 14th Annual Huntington Tulip Festival will take place on Sunday, May 4th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Heckscher Park in Huntington. As winter slowly winds down, many gardeners cannot wait to soak up the springtime sun and get their hands dirty in the garden. Such excitement is not just good for gardeners, but can benefit the garden in the months to come as well. Late winter or early spring is a great time to get a head start on the gardening season. Even if gardening season is still around the corner, completing the following projects can ensure your garden gets off on the right foot. Clear Debris One of the best things you can do for your garden as winter winds down is to clear it of debris. Winter can be especially harsh on a landscape, and gardens left to the elements are often filled with debris once spring arrives. Dead leaves, fallen branches, rocks that surfaced during the winter frost, and even garbage that might have blown about in winter winds can all pile up in a garden over a typical winter. Clearing such debris likely won’t take long, but it’s a great first step toward restoring the garden before the time comes to plant and grow the garden once again. Examine The Soil Soil plays a significant

role in whether a garden thrives or struggles. Examining the soil before the season starts can help gardeners address any issues before they plant. Ignoring the soil until a problem arises can turn the upcoming gardening season into a lost opportunity, so test the soil to determine if it has any nutrient or mineral deficiencies. This may require the help of a professional, but if a problem arises, you might be able to adjust the acidity or alkalinity of the soil and still enjoy a successful gardening season. Another way to examine the soil is less complex but can shed light on when would be a good time to get back to work. Reach into the soil and dig out a handful. If the soil quickly crumbles, you can start preparing for gardening seasoning. But if the soil is still clumped together, it needs more time to dry out before you can begin your prep work. Initiate Edging Edging is another task gardeners can begin as they get ready for the season. Edge plant and flower beds, but be sure to use a spade with a flat blade or an edger designed to edge flower beds. Such tools will cut deep enough

so grass roots that may eventually grow into the flower bed are severed. Depending on how large a garden is, edging can be a time-consuming task, so getting a head start allows homeowners to spend more time planting and tending to their gardens once the season hits full swing. Fight Weeds Though weeds likely have not survived the winter, that does not mean they won’t return once the weather starts to heat up. But as inevitable as weeds may seem, homeowners can take steps to prevent them from turning beautiful gardens into battlegrounds where plants, flowers and vegetables are pitted against unsightly and potentially harmful weeds. Spring is a good time to apply a pre-emergent weed preventer, which can stop weeds before they grow. Though such solutions are not always foolproof, they can drastically reduce the likelihood of weed growth. Though gardeners might not be able to start planting their gardens in late winter or early spring, they can still get outside and take steps to ensure their gardens thrive once planting season begins.

Repair Your Dead Grass A patch of dead grass on an otherwise lush lawn can be a frustrating eyesore for homeowners. Whether lawn care is your passion or just something you do to maintain the value of your home, dead grass can be exasperating. But as unsightly as dead grass can be, addressing it and restoring the dead patches can be somewhat simple. Before you can restore grass, however, you must first identify the source of the problem. Grass often dies because of urine damage, which is typically characterized by a dead spot surrounded by otherwise green grass. Grub infestation might be at fault when dead grass appears, and such an infestation often produces patches of light brown grass that are scattered throughout the lawn. It’s also possible that dead grass is a result of human error. If your lawn was overfertilized, then patches of gray-green grass may appear. Fungal disease is another common culprit behind dead grass, and such disease can manifest itself in different ways. Once you have identified why the grass is dead, which may require the help of a professional, then you can begin to treat your lawn. Urine Damage

Urine damage is often limited to a particular area of the grass where your family pet routinely relieves itself. Once a particular patch of grass has worn down, the pet may move on to another spot. But if you quickly notice a dead spot due to urine damage, you can train the animal to urinate elsewhere, limiting the damage it causes. When repairing the grass, dig a hole that’s roughly four inches deep and fill it with fresh soil until it’s level with the soil surrounding the dead patch. Then you can sprinkle seed on top of the freshly laid soil and water the spot.Grass should grow in and stay green so long as you prevent further urine damage. Insect Damage Addressing dead spots caused by insect damage can be a little more complicated, and some homeowners may prefer to hire a professional. If you want to handle the problem on your own, apply pesticide to the affected areas so the insects behind the problem are killed. Once the insects are no more, cut the grass, raking the affected area to remove the dead grass and any additional debris. Scatter grass seed over the affected areas and then apply an appropriate fertilizer

and water immediately. Professionals may know just the right fertilizer for your lawn, so even if you want to go it alone, visit a local lawn care center to ask for advice about addressing your particular problem. Fertilizer Damage Fertilizer damage can also prove difficult to address, as applying fresh seeds too soon can kill any freshly growing seedlings. So grass that has been damaged by overfertilization must first be allowed to fully die. Once that has happened, the grass can be cut and any remaining debris or dead grass can be removed. Seed can then be scattered, and you can even add some additional soil before laying down an appropriate amount of fertilizer and watering the lawn immediately. If you don’t trust yourself to use fertilizer correctly, then hire a professional to do the job for you. This will cost a little more, but you likely won’t wake up to more dead patches of grass down the road. Dead grass can be unsightly and turn an otherwise lush lawn into a patchy eyesore. But addressing dead grass can be easy and can quickly restore a lawn to its green grandeur.

DOCTORAL DEGREE - Pastor Roy Minnix, of Dix Hills, received a Doctor of Education degree from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. School of Education at St. John Fisher College on March 22nd. Pastor Minnix fulfilled all of the required course work for the Ed.D. in Executive Leadership while enrolled at the College’s extension site in New Rochelle, including an original research study and dissertation. Pastor Minnix is currently the Senior Pastor of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Dix Hills.

A Springtime Vacation Bible School Program will be held on April 14th, 15th and 16th (Monday Wednesday) from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. This program is for children from 3-11 years old. The fee for this event will be $40 a child, $75 for two children or $90 for three or more. EARLY BIRD SPECIAL sign up before April 14th and receive $10 off. Students from James H. Boyd Intermediate School and Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District have participated in a variety of distancelearning activities, geared at expanding their horizons and complementing the inclass curriculum. Through their distancelearning exercise, thirdgrade students in Mrs. Decker’s class at Boyd participated in a program with the Columbus Zoo. The students learned about the different types of penguins and their habitats, eating habits, lifestyle and adaptations. The students even dressed up one of their classmates as a penguin to learn about the functions of each of the penguin’s body parts and then compared the sizes of

various species of penguins with the size of a thirdgrade student. Through the videoconference, students were able to speak directly to the zoologist and ask her questions, as well. “The students thoroughly enjoyed learning about penguins by seeing the animals in their natural habitats all around the world,” said Krista Albrecht, instructional technology specialist. “This distance learning program took their unit on penguins to the next level.” At Harley Avenue Primary School, firstgrade students took part in several distancelearning programs with the Boonshoft Museum of Ohio. The program, appropriately entitled Matter Box, afforded the students the opportunity

to conduct experiments to demonstrate the properties of the different states of matter, a unit they have been studying in class. Students were provided with a glimpse of how chemistry can change the properties of a substance through several experiments. In one experiment, students added a phenol red solution to calcium chloride and felt the substance get warm. They also added the phenol red solution to baking soda and felt the new substance get very cold. When the students mixed the hot and cold substances together in a small plastic bag, the result caused the baggie to fill with air and puff out. “The students were amazed by this!” said Ms. Albrecht.
