Members of the community have been reaching out and asking how they can help the healthcare professionals and those afflicted with COVID-19 pandemic. One very important way: we need an influx of iPads to keep our inpatients connected to their providers and their families. Anyone who has an iPad that is not being used, please consider donating to Stony Brook University Hospital. We will repurpose the donated device to provide telecommunication for our patients to connect with our medical staff. We are looking for about one hundred devices of a supported iPad model. Before donation, the device should be cleaned, reset (click here
for instructions), and placed in a zip lock bag if possible with a viable power chord. It takes a team effort to convert these devices into a secure patient friendly solution. We will do our best to make your gift count and give someone comfort during these remarkable times. Many home improvement television series showcase people deciding whether to improve upon their current homes to make them into the houses of their dreams or to put “for sale” signs in their lawns and move on to something new. The question of whether to move or stay put depends on various factors. Such factors may include emotional attachment to a home, the current economic climate and the cost of real estate. Current data points to a greater propensity for people to invest and improve upon their current properties rather than trading up for something new. According to information collected by John Burns Real Estate Consulting, the percentage of homeowners moving up to their next home is the lowest in 25 years. Many are opting to make starter homes

permanent by expanding them and repairing homes for the long haul. The National Association of Realtors said that, between 1987 and 2008, home buyers stayed in their homes an average of six

In the days leading up to the closing of the schools, the schools made sure that every student had access to a suitable device to continue their learning remotely, and loaned devices to students who needed them. Faculty responded quickly, with teachers ‘translating’ lesson plans to make them engaging and effective when presented online. Pastors and Principals orchestrated the activities and began each new day with morning announcements, a morning prayer, and the pledge of allegiance. School days continued, uninterrupted, right down to the acknowledgement of students celebrating birthdays. The tight communities around our schools worked together to maintain a sense of normalcy for the students.
As the schools and students enter week 2, with the technical and educational challenges under control, students are completing and sharing projects online, they are seeing and interacting with their classmates in online forums. Students are attending Liturgies and prayer services online, and their schools have even begun to bring their art and music classes to them via Skype, Zoom and Google. The highly unusual circumstances of the COVID-19 outbreak, and subsequent shutting down of much of society, has helped to identify the things that really matter in our lives. Harborfields Fighters are taking a stand against cancer. Led my Harborfields High School student Andrew Gonzalez, the group is participating in a sevenweek competition against other Long Island Schools to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Long Island chapter. Andrew was inspired to create the group, noting that both his mother and aunt are cancer survivors. Additionally, he said that the high school was deeply affected by the recent passing of Gabrielle Cava, who lost her fight against Signet Ring Cell Carcinoma on Jan. 12. The group’s goal is to raise $100,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through sending emails, asking family, friends and community members to donate to the cause. Since kicking off their fundraiser last Sunday, the group has raised more than $2,000. Groups that raise $5,000 or more will receive a college letter of recommendation from the society. Andrew added that he will also reflect on his time as a Harborfields Fighter when it comes time to write his college entrance letter. Andrew has also been nominated as a candidate for Student of the Year by the society’s Long Island chapter. “It’s part of a great cause and I’m just trying to be an advocate for change,” Andrew said.

As coronavirus continues to impact Long Islanders, growing health concerns along with the constant barrage of news is raising people’s anxiety. Catholic Health Services’s (CHS) mental health professionals offer ways we can reduce our stress during this time of uncertainty. This includes eating healthy, exercise, adequate sleep, virtually connecting with friends and family and reducing
exposure to news and social media. “The constant flow of information related to coronavirus can become overwhelming,” said Catholic Health Services Chairman of Behavioral Health Ronald Brenner, MD. “It’s important to take a break and step away from media reports and the constant scrolling through social channels.” Anxiety is a normal response to a stressful
situation and can inspire adaptive behavior in many situations. However, when facing mounting uncertainty, the brain can go into an anxiety spiral and cause atypical reactions. Knowing the body’s physical reactions to the different types of anxiety is important. Typical stress reactions can include temporary difficulty concentrating, irritability, fatigue, stomachache and
difficulty sleeping. Atypical reactions can manifest in persistent and/or excessive worry that prevents you from completing daily tasks, changes to energy levels, eating patterns and/or prolonged and overwhelming worry. Dr. Brenner strongly suggests that anyone experiencing unusual or atypical reactions that won’t subside in a short period of time seek professional
mental health assistance. To reduce coronavirusrelated anxiety, there are several steps individuals can take. These include: • Find meaningful tasks and roles within your support network to channel your anxiety • Create spaces that are not focused on coronavirus. This could include a social media thread on other topics, or watching movies • Savor small positive

PSEG Long Island and the PSEG Foundation are supporting the Island Harvest Food Bank in its response to critical community needs throughout Long Island as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. The mission of Island Harvest Food Bank is to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island. The PSEG Foundation provided the Island Harvest Food Bank a grant of $45,000 to address rising food insecurity, including children who do not have access to school feeding programs because their schools are temporarily closed because of the public health crisis. Island Harvest Food Bank, which relies mostly on donations of surplus food by commercial food establishments, wholesalers, supermarkets, and individuals, has seen a decline in those donations recently. The grant will purchase food to ensure an uninterrupted supply for people who rely on supplemental feeding programs served by Island Harvest Food Bank. “PSEG Long Island

Students Partake In Hands-On DNA Experiment
from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory DNA Learning Center educator, Brittany Johnson, students measured 8 microliters
of agarose gels, which was used to separate each of the suspects’ DNA samples. Students learned how to carefully inject the samples using pipettes
and later conducted gel electrophoresis by using an electric current to separate the DNA based on size and charge. Ms. Johnson
also stressed the importance of replacing the tip of the pipettes before each injection to prevent contaminating the evidence.
