tudents in Liz Held and Beth Noon’s third grade classes at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood District used their math and science skills to compete in the 5th Annual Potato Olympics. On the day of the big event, students rotated to eight different stations with their multitalented potato athletes. While working cooperatively with teammates, students used various math and science skills to complete each Olympic event.

Walking For A Wish In an effort to raise money for the MakeA-Wish-Foundation, students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District kicked off their annual Walk for a Wish fundraising campaign in early March. With more than $100,000 raised since the district launched its first campaign, the Harborfields community has helped make a wish come true for at least nine children who suffer from serious illnesses. Participants from all facets of the community are invited to raise donations and walk around the track each

year at Harborfields High School to help benefit a child in the surrounding community. This year, all donations collected for the walk will be used to grant the wish of nine-year old Jake, a child from Medford who struggles with Hodgkins Lymphoma. Making A Difference The Long Island based credit union NEFCU announced today the 2015 recipients of its annual Making A Difference college scholarship program, granting a total of $12,500 to 10 local college students. The scholarship program recognizes students currently enrolled at accredited universities, colleges and community colleges who have succeeded in both their classrooms and communities. Those eligible for the scholarships must be members of NEFCU or related to a member. Since the establishment of the Making A Difference scholarship program, over 10 years ago, students have been awarded over $1,000,000 in grants. “NEFCU is proud to continue the tradition of offering a scholarship program for our members and their families. We believe that investing in education produces great returns,” said Valerie

Garguilo, vice president of marketing and community relations for NEFCU. “This year’s scholarship recipients are all very bright, well-rounded individuals and we congratulate them for their academic achievements.” Through the “Making A Difference” college scholarship program, NEFCU awarded five $1,500 vouchers to undergraduate and graduate students (with a minimum GPA of 3.5), and five $1,000 vouchers to students enrolled at an accredited community college (with at least a 3.0 GPA). Potato Olympics Students in Liz Held and Beth Noon’s thirdgrade classes at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District used their math and science skills to compete in the 5th Annual Potato Olympics. Prior to the opening ceremonies of the Potato Olympics, third-graders studied the Olympic games in their classrooms. Students decorated a potato and created a name and history for their Potato

Olympian. On the day of the big event, students rotated to eight different stations with their multitalented potato athletes. While working cooperatively with teammates, students used various math and science skills to complete each Olympic event. While recording the statistics of their Olympian, students coached their athletes in games including the potato luge, potato bowling, potato curling, potato

Woman Of Distinction

Suffolk Legislator Lou D’Amaro has named Melville resident Jane Barbato as the District 17 Woman of Distinction for 2015. Under a resolution passed in 2002, every Suffolk County Legislator is annually authorized to honor a “Woman of Distinction” from their local district. Nominations are sought from community members and presentations are made in March in conjunction with Women’s History Month. For more than 18 years, Ms. Barbato has been tirelessly committed to the Town of Huntington Animal Shelter. She initially volunteered as a dog walker and now oversees the entire Dog Volunteer Program for the Shelter’s not-for-profit all-volunteer League for Animal Protection of Huntington, Inc. (LAP). She also fundraises for LAP

and serves on the Board of Directors. As the head of the LAP Dog Volunteer program, Ms. Barbato instructs others on how to train and walk the Shelter dogs to help ready them for adoption. She is one of the two LAP liaisons to the Town of Huntington, constantly working and communicating with Town officials about issues involving the Shelter. Ms. Barbato was nominated for the award by fellow Huntington Animal Shelter volunteer Maryanne Hickey of Kings Park. In recommending her, Ms. Hickey wrote: “Aside from all that Jane does for the LAP Dog program, it is her endless hours at the shelter year round, consistently and in all weather, that is an amazing example of her pure dedication. She is bright, articulate, steadfast, good-humored and extremely responsible

and deals professionally with others in all aspects.” Legislator D’Amaro recognized Ms. Barbato on March 17th in the Legislative Auditorium at the William H. Rogers Building in Hauppauge. Joining them were her husband Paul, Ms. Hickey, Huntington Animal Shelter Director Jerry Mosca and several other Shelter volunteers. “With her impressive work ethic, stellar values and unmatched commitment to helping vulnerable animals, Jane Barbato inspires her other volunteers and the entire local community,” said Legislator D’Amaro. “For almost two decades, she has been giving back and consistently setting an example for others. I am proud to honor Ms. Barbato as this year’s Woman of Distinction.”
