Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. , a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, has launched a new program for children ages 2-5 years. The Barnyard Buddies Program is a hands-on learning program which involves Pal-O-Mine’s therapy animals. It is facilitated by experienced and licensed educational and healthcare professionals who will use an experiential approach to learning. Its unique, age-appropriate curriculum includes social-emotional, physical, cognitive, and imaginative concepts and activities such as expressive art projects. Additionally, it incorporates focused exposure to pre-reading/ reading, mathematics, and

problem-solving skills. Children enjoy learning in Pal-O-Mine’s naturalistic learning environment full of positive support. Children of all levels of abilities are welcome. The Barnyard Buddies program consists of four sessions held once a week on Tuesday mornings at Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, 829 Old Nichols Road, Islandia, NY. Session dates are April 26th, May 3rd, May 10th and May 17th. Each session is 90-minutes long and begins at 9:30 AM and ends at 11:00 AM. Sessions are limited to a maximum of ten children. One parent or caregiver must accompany each child. The fee for the fourweek program is $150 per child and must be paid in full prior to the first session. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) will hold the annual Spring Family Fishing Festival on Saturday, April 2, at Belmont Lake State Park. Additional sponsors for the fishing festival include the Natural Heritage Trust, The Fisherman Magazine, New York Life, Seaford Knights of Columbus Fishing Club, Art Flick Chapter Trout Unlimited, and radio stations 106.1 WBLI and 102.3 WBAB. “Freshwater fishing is an activity the whole family can enjoy, especially on Long Island,” Regional Director Cathy Haas said. “The Spring Fishing Festival at Belmont Lake State Park is an excellent way to kick off the fishing season and introduce family and friends to the sport with no license needed. Festival attendees can learn about freshwater fishing opportunities on Long Island and try their hand at fishing for trout while kids can participate in the casting contest and other fun activities.” “Fishing is a great way for New Yorkers to enjoy the outdoors and appreciate the environment,” said State Parks Long Island Regional Director George Gorman Jr. “I encourage anglers of all ages to discover what a great place Belmont Lake State Park is to try fishing.” Festival activities begin at 10 a.m., and are provided

free of charge. Activities include open fishing, casting instruction, rod use, fish identification, fishing instruction, flycasting demonstrations, and a fish cleaning station. DEC and local fishing clubs will host informational displays and loaner rods and free bait will be available to participants. The supply of loaner rods is limited and participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing tackle if possible. Children’s activities include the “Spring Fling” casting contest, as well as hands-on educational displays by DEC’s Education Unit. Children participating in the casting contest will have a chance to win prizes supplied by DEC’s I FISH NY Program. This event will be held rain or shine. The Spring Fishing Festival is designated as a Free Fishing Event, so the freshwater fishing license requirement for anglers ages 16 and older is suspended for this event only. After 4 p.m., anglers will need a valid State freshwater fishing license to legally fish. All fishing regulations will continue to apply. A vehicle use fee of $8 will be in effect. Parking is free for Empire Pass holders. The 2022 Empire Pass can be purchased for $80 at State Park offices or online. The festival highlights DEC’s spring trout stocking program in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Prior to the festival, DEC will stock

Belmont Lake with nearly 1,000 brown and brook trout. Additional brook and rainbow trout will be stocked by State Parks. DEC will also stock Upper Twin Pond in Wantagh, Oyster Bay Mill Pond, and Massapequa Creek and Reservoir, along with 14 other Long Island lakes with trout before April 1, providing excellent prospects for spring fishing. In total, DEC’s spring stocking program, conducted by regional freshwater fisheries staff, staff from DEC’s Catskill Fish Hatchery, and volunteers, will place 20,000 brown trout and rainbow trout in ponds and streams in Nassau and Suffolk counties. A complete list of DEC fish stocking can be found on DEC’s website. Anglers are reminded that trout fishing season on Long Island is year-round for most lakes and streams. There is a daily limit of three fish per person. Spring trout stocking begins in mid-March and will be completed by early May. YES Community Counseling Center has been providing both addiction treatment and prevention services for the past three decades with the understanding that the needs of each individual is uniquely different and therefore, treatment must also be individualized and utilize a variety of approaches.

YES Community Counseling Center’s addiction treatment services are comprehensive and approaches are based upon the developmental stage and readiness of each individual. Under the supervision of the agency’s Medical Director, specializes in evidence based services which are available for adolescents, young adults, adults and family members, including: •Adolescent Family Program (AFP) •Young Adult groups •Impaired driver evaluations and treatment •Moral Reconation Therapy for those who are legally involved (MRT) •Recovery groups •Trauma focused therapies •Parent and signiﬁcant other support groups •Educational groups

It is also understood that most often, family members are deeply affected by addiction and require support and well as an understanding the complexities of the disease and how to support a loved one through their recovery. Early education about addiction is critical along with early interventions that build individual, family and community protective factors to reduce the likelihood of young people resorting to substances to cope with life’s challenges. In light of marijuana legalization, it is so important that parents learn the detrimental effects of all substances on the developing brain. Schools Raise Over $52,000 To Conquer Kids’ Cancer

Students and staff throughout the NorthportEast Northport Union Free School District enjoyed the return of their annual “Brave the Shave” event, hosted by the Northport High School National Honor Society. The event raises money and awareness for St. Baldrick’s Foundation and took place at Northport High School on March 11. Students took turns in

teams stepping up to the podium to have their head shaved in solidarity with children suffering from cancer and raised a total of $52,732. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is dedicated to raising money for lifesaving childhood cancer research. Each school formed their own team which included captains, volunteers and donors. The family fun afternoon included a DJ,

crafts, snacks, and of course, the exciting headshaving event. When asked why he decided to shave his head, Fifth Avenue student Joseph said “so no kid feels alone.” The event was done virtually last year due to the pandemic; however the excitement of the inperson activities helped draw one of the largest donations ever.

Stupore ‘Good Scout’ Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, June 6, 2022 at the Nissequogue Golf Club (21 Golf Club Road, St. James). Open to the golfing public, the fundraiser will help support the Scouting

Programs in Suffolk County serving nearly 10,000 youth! The Golf Outing also recognizes one Scout each year with a $1,000 annual renewable scholarship for their college education. This youth will be presented with the ‘Stupore Scholarship’ at the Golf Outing’s evening reception, following the round of golf.

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) is pleased to again join Long Island Cares and help it “rain food for cats and dogs” by hosting a pet food drive now through the end of May. Legislator Donnelly’s district office is serving as a drop-off location for the 11th Legislative Pet Food Drive where much-needed pet food and supplies will be collected to benefit Baxter’s Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares (www.licares. org). In previous years, constituents of the 17th Legislative District have

generously donated to this annual drive. All donations go directly to Baxter’s Pantry. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are welcome including food for hamsters, fish, birds and ferrets. Items may be dropped off at Legislator Donnelly’s District Office, located at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm until May 31. As per health code

requirements, all pet food must be unopened and in original packaging. East Northport Middle School Students Rocks Out At Islander’s Game

East Northport Middle School student Antonio Rodriguez rocked out on guitar for the entire New York Islander’s fandom, erupting the stadium in applause during the March 5 game at UBS Arena. Antonio played “Enter Sandman” by Metallica on his electric guitar in between periods on the arena stage, which was played over the speakers for the entire audience. Antonio was selected for this opportunity through his guitar school, School of Rock. With his family and ENMS teacher, Glenn Kubik, in attendance, Antonio performed his best and was met with cheers from the audience. Antionio is an eighth grader who has been playing guitar for eight years. He is a member of the school’s orchestra and jazz band and plans to continue playing guitar in the future. In addition to performing on stage, Antonio was able to enter the stadium early to set up and prepare while it was still empty, which he explained was a “really cool” experience. Teacher Glenn Kubik,

an Islander fan and one of Antonio’s former teachers, said he is “very proud” of Antonio and is looking forward to seeing what else he can accomplish in the future. Prior to this event, Antonio had only ever

Long Island Cares And Island Harvest Food Bank Receive $75,000 Through Bank Of America COVID-19 Employee Booster Initiative Bank of America recently announced a $75,000 donation to Long Island Cares and Island Harvest Food Bank to address food insecurity on Long Island, generated by an employee booster shot campaign. An estimated 38 million people were food insecure in the United States in 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. As the pandemic continues, hunger relief organizations on Long Island and across the country are facing ongoing challenges, such as increased demand for their services and rising food prices. Earlier this year, Bank of America announced it would make a $100 donation to local hunger relief organizations and food banks for each of its employee on Long Island who received a COVID-19 booster shot or vaccine and notified the company before the end of January. “Food banks and other hunger relief organizations on Long Island are facing demand as the coronavirus continues to impact our region,” said Marc Perez, President, Bank of America Long Island. “We are committed to investing in the health and wellbeing of our teammates and communities, which is why we are supporting Island Harvest Food Bank and Long Island Cares as they work tirelessly to feed our neighbors who are facing food insecurity.” Long Island Cares is a lifeline for many of the approximately 218,000 Long Islanders facing food insecurity and has expanded its operations to meet the increased need for services since the onset of the coronavirus. Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island is welcoming back its annual tradition of in-person walking of the Stations of the Cross prayer services at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury on one of the most solemn days of the Christian calendar during the 2022 Lenten season. One of the largest attended events for Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island, Catholic faithful across Long Island are invited to return and take part in the tradition of following a 1.5-mile walking route throughout Holy Rood to commemorate Christ’s redemptive sacrifice through 14 stations each year on Good Friday, which is April 15th this year. Each station is signified by a different cross/sculpture at the cemetery. Deacons from Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island will assist in leading the service for attendees. The Stations of the Cross walking services were cancelled each of the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, hundreds are expected to take part in the Good Friday services. Faithful can also experience Holy Rood’s Stations of the Cross on their own with self-directed tours or via a virtual option for those who wish to partake from their homes.
