More than 200 fire departments across New York State have already signed up for the seventh annual RecruitNY weekend, a major initiative of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY). On April 29th-30th, firehouses across the State will open their doors to the public in an effort to increase membership in the volunteer fire service. Members of the public are invited to visit their local firehouses, where volunteer firefighters will be conducting tours of their facilities, demonstrating firefighting techniques, and allowing visitors to try on turnout gear. These activities, and more, will give visitors a taste of what it means to

Students from across the Town of Huntington participated in the Huntington Youth Council’s annual “Youth Forum,” a Town Board meeting for high school students run by the high school members of the Youth Council. For this year’s forum, the Huntington Youth Council held hearings on the topics of regulating Uber, providing Gender Neutral Restrooms and deciding if Trigger Warnings and Safe Spaces should be provided in schools. Members of the Youth Council worked within committees to closely research and write summaries on the pros and cons of each topic for the forum’s agenda. Upon arrival, participants at the Youth Forum spoke
with members of the Youth Council in small groups regarding the three hearings and other topics they wanted to address. Participants were encouraged to testify in a formal public hearing on those issues. The forum is now available on the town’s website and will be available on the Town’s public access channel broadcasting on Cablevision (Channel 18) and Verizon FIOS (Channel 38). “It was great to see so many students from the Town attend the annual Youth Forum, engage with their peers about local issues and debate the pros and cons of the selected topics,” said Councilwoman Susan A. Berland. “I want to thank the Huntington Youth
Council, the attendees, parents, administrators and school personnel for helping to spread the word and making this forum such a success.” In 2003, Councilwoman Susan A. Berland founded the Huntington Youth Council which is comprised of students from every public high school in the Town of Huntington. The Council meets monthly to discuss issues that affect the youth in our community and plan events that engage their peers in local issues. Life, as we know it, doesn’t always go according to plan. Sometimes, the most carefully orchestrated days can go awry in the blink of an eye, through no fault of our own. How we react, and recover – or don’t, as the case may be – says a lot about our character, or lack thereof. The fact is, more days than not will fall into this category. Seldom do schedules run like clockwork; rare are there uninterrupted intervals of peace and tranquility. Life doesn’t stop for anyone, and you had best hang on for the ride. Speaking of rides, and unexpected detours if you will, I recently took my car – my six-year old “Celeste” – for her annual checkup at the dealership. Over three hours, and nearly $500, later, I left with new rear brakes, an oil change, assorted minor
maintenance and a clean bill of health – for now. One day later, a co-worker said, “Didn’t you just get your car serviced?” Um…yeah? “Brake light is out.” And here I was so excited to no longer have a monthly car payment to contend with. Sigh. Take a deep breath; it calms the mind… so they say. On that note, I am happy to report to many inquiring readers that I have found a new yoga studio at which to continue my practice; new locale, anyway – same teacher, same familiar faces, same positive vibes. It’s amazing what those 75 minutes can do for the soul, even after the most pressing of days. There is something truly healing about those inhales and exhales, even while the mind races through its endless loop of thoughts. We could all benefit from
slowing down the pace a bit, mentally and physically. What has rushing ever accomplished that more careful consideration and contemplation couldn’t have improved upon? Even my baby betta, Spud, seems to have realized this, as he purposefully swims to and fro in his tiny bowl, stopping every so often – about once every five minutes, on average – to carefully inspect the thermometer I recently installed. Maybe he can read? Even his eating habits are methodical, as he carefully chooses each crumb, gobbling them up in – I kid you not – size order. And here I thought I was a bit OCD. Like human, like pet. And with that, the clock has tolled on deadline. And so, In Step readers, I bid you a fond adieu. ‘Til next week. Make it a good one.

Scientists in the Making James H. Boyd Intermediate School students received a visit from the New York Hall of Science on March 16th. Sponsored by the Boyd PTA, students had the opportunity to explore and experiment through handon stations in the school gymnasium. Ten stations facilitated by science educators from the New York Hall of Science were set up throughout the gymnasium, which students had 45 minutes
to rotate through. This included an electricity station where students used Play-Doh to construct electricity and observed what friction does to hair. A rocket station, where students experimented with straws, paper and tape to project how far their rockets would soar, and an animation station, where classes could observe what movement does to their drawings. “Over the past two years, Principal Dr. Denise
Toscano and I have been working to create unique learning experiences for students. When we heard about the New York Hall of Science visitation program, we thought it would be a fantastic idea,” said Director of Math, Science and Technology Eileen-Kelly Gorman. “We are so thankful to the Boyd PTA for allowing us to bring this opportunity to the school.”

County Honorees Two county employees were rewarded for going above and beyond in their duties as part of a new recognition program sponsored by Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. Vincent Cordiale, systems analyst supervisor with the county’s information technology department, and Jennifer Kohn, a senior assistant county attorney, were honored with the firstever Employee Excellence
Awards at the Legislature’s March 7th General Meeting in Riverhead. Awards will be given out each General Meeting to acknowledge county employees for their hard work and contribution. “Many county employees work tremendously hard and are valuable assets to their departments, and the Employee Excellence Awards are a way for us to recognize their dedication, outstanding efforts and achievements,” said Presiding Officer Gregory.
“Conscientious, honest and hard-working, Vincent Cordiale and Jennifer Kohn have excelled in their departments, making them perfect candidates for this award. I thank them for their contribution and service to Suffolk on behalf of the citizens of Suffolk County.” Vincent Cordiale, of Rocky Point in Suffolk’s Sixth District, was nominated by IT Commissioner Scott Mastellon. Cordiale has worked with the county
for the last 20 years and is responsible for the county’s technology infrastructure. A lead designer of the county’s redundant data centers, his commitment and dedication helped the county continue to operate during Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene and Super Snowstorm Nemo, and he helped save $150,000 in county funding by obtaining a licensing rule exception. He has a stellar reputation for being the first employee to respond to issues in the evenings,
during the weekends, and even on holidays Jennifer Kohn, of Huntington Station in Suffolk’s 18th District, was nominated by County Attorney Dennis Brown. Now a senior assistant county attorney, she has been working in the county for nearly 30 years. The Northeastern Law School graduate is the only current employee to hold a master’s degree in environmental law. She has represented the county in various fields
such as farm preservation, planning issues and Cornell Cooperative management, and she ushered through the sale of the remediated Circutron property. She has been instrumental in drafting new code and helped coordinate the county’s response to the detection of firesuppressing chemicals at Gabreski and in Yaphank, and to dumping at West Hills County Park.

William J. Brosnan School for St. Baldrick’s Day on March 10th in the fight to end childhood cancer. The school community created teams in which individuals raised money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, an organization the district has supported for the past nine years. The teams came out to the event to get their heads shaved in honor of those who have battled cancer or are currently fighting the deadly disease. Through online donations alone, the district raised more than $75,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation this year. St. Baldrick’s Foundation organizer John McKenna and Superintendent of Schools Robert Banzer were grateful for the turnout and support from the school community. “I want to thank this community, who have been unbelievable at helping others weather the storm,” said Banzer. “I want to extend a thanks to those who are donating their time today, donating their hair and donating money for such an admirable cause.”
Local barbershops and salons volunteered their time and skills to shave heads. Banzer and eightyear-old Northport-East Northport cancer survivor Christian Sloan cut the green ribbon to kick off the event. Sloan overcame anaplastic ependymoma, also known as a brain tumor and helped shave volunteers’ heads during the event. One by one, team members of all ages sat in chairs on the auditorium stage and had their heads shaved for the cause, while the Northport Pipe and Drums entertained the crowd with their bagpipe performance. Attendees were also welcomed into the gymnasium for the opportunity to support the foundation by purchasing food, St. Baldrick’s apparel and participating in raffles, balloon animals, a silent art auction and face painting by Illuminated Faces. In addition, Norwood Avenue Elementary School Girl Scouts sold Girl Scout cookies in the lobby with a percentage of the cookie purchases going towards the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

Tuning In Fifth Avenue Elementary School students in Virginia Neill-Meade’s first grade class received a special visit from a bagpiper on March 17th in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. John Meade, a member of the Northport Pipe and Drums Band and
husband of Mrs. NeillMeade, visits his wife’s classroom every year for the holiday. Mr. Meade dressed in his traditional bagpiper uniform and educated the students on the history of the clothing. He
Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School students in Nancy Sordi and Melissa Reisen’s math classes focused on the importance of fractions in everyday life by creating Shamrock Shakes in honor of St. Patrick’s Day on March 16th. Students learned how to properly measure
ingredients and follow directions when determining how much of each item to put in the blender. Sordi explained to her classes that fractions are used constantly in daily life and particularly in cooking. Students put their fraction skills to the test with the end result being a delicious and
healthy green shake. Classes sipped on their shakes while completing a worksheet as a group on what they learned. The students were also challenged to determine how much ingredients they would need to serve the shakes to a larger number of students.

Volleying for Others Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students banded together for an evening of healthy competition during the school’s annual Volleyballa-thon on March 16th. The event raised $3,380, which will be donated to the Sergeant Paul Tuozzolo Sergeants Benevolent Association for Widows & Children’s Fund for NYC,
the Sean Urda Memorial Soccer Scholarship Fund and the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. This year, 48 teams of students participated in the tournament in the school gymnasium. Each team had t-shirts made and came up with a creative name for their group. Throughout the event, those in attendance were
encouraged to sign three posters made for a senior at the high school who was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Students shared their best wishes and words of encouragement. Each team competed on one of the four volleyball courts until one team was crowned the winner. The winning team proved to be “Jokes of 2016.”
LOTE Week Celebration Students throughout Oldfield Middle School celebrated Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Week from March 6th-10th in an effort to learn more about other cultures. Each day of the week had a specific theme and students dressed in corresponding colors. The school celebrated USA Day, Spanish Day, Heritage Day, Italian Day and French Day with different lessons and activities. During Spanish Day on March 7th, Sol y Sombra Dance Company visited seventh and eighth-grade Spanish classes to educate students on Latin dances. Led by dancer Maria Loreta, students learned the
history of Spanish dance and had the opportunity to practice some moves with and without partners. On March 9th, Italian classes experienced an abundance of culture during the school’s Italian Day. The Coro d’Italia visited featuring Marilou Romano and her performers to teach Italian language, culture and tradition to sixth, seventh and eighthgraders. During a hands on presentation, students had the opportunity to handle percussion instruments and perform traditional dancing. Romano also dressed students up in folk costumes from the 19th century. In addition, Tenor
singer, Vincent Ricciardi, serenaded students with renditions of “O sole mio” and other Italian classics. Students were able to hear songs played on the Italian bagpipe and the accordion. During French Day on March 10th, sixth-grade French students were visited by the Harborfields High School French Club where they played French games together in an engaging way to review topics such as foods, numbers and everyday phrases. Seventh and eighth-grade French classes also learned about French Impressionism and created their own artwork using oil pastels.

His expertise encompasses advising a diverse client base including service industries, manufacturers, wholesale distributors, engineering, transportation entities, as well as governmental entities and school districts. Mr. Davoli provides advisory services to individuals, corporations and business owners in financial projections, business and estate tax planning, litigation support and forensic accounting. In addition, he advises governmental clients and school districts on new standards adoption, compliance and preparation of financial statements in accordance with the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting program.
