Rizzuto was able to provide much-needed supplies and health checks to the community of Gorkha, Nepal. Joseph returned to his past elementary school to share his experience with the students that helped his mission become a reality. The inhabitants of the community of Gorkha were affected harshly by

an earthquake in 2015 and are still trying to rebuild their homes. Mr. Rizzuto’s presentation was an eye-opening experience for students who were affected by seeing the plights of people living in another country who don’t have access to the same resources Americans do.

Pet Peeves is a 100% volunteer-driven organization made up of compassionate individuals and corporations who want to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable companion animals and give them a second chance by supplying the funds needed for food, medical care and a warm place to sleep. Most of all, Pet Peeves helps nonprofit rescue

groups and shelters give these desperate animals a chance to find a new family and home through adoption programs. Through its grant process, Pet Peeves provides funds for spay/ neuter programs, low cost and free clinics, medical supplies, trap-neuterreturn [TNR] programs for feral cats and Safe Haven Programs. The Many Beneﬁts of SWOT If you are like most people, you are probably wondering what in the world is SWOT? However, what if I could show you what the initials mean and how this tool is used by most companies around the world; but, most importantly, how you can also use it to simplify your daily life to make it richer and more satisfying? Still interested? Then read on for a really worthwhile new experience. Let’s take a look at what these initials mean to business organizations: Strengths: What are the current strengths of the organization? How does it compare to its competitors? What is it best known for? In what ways are they outstanding in the industry? Weaknesses: In what ways do they fall short in performance? Customer service? Product performance? Durabily? Weakness in the top management? The list goes on. Opportunities: What is happening in the environment which opens the way for expansion and the possibilities for increased profit? Some current examples are the huge expansion of need for our aging population in health care and medical services. Another is the rapidly growing area of technology and robotics, where robots are now taking over many of the jobs held by American workers. Almost every day, one can read about some startling discovery which enriches

all our lives. Threats: Just as a starter, in this volatile environment, I prefer to use the word obstacle instead. Both mean the same thing. It occurs when something happens, which stands in the way we do things and causes anxiety and confusion. An example here would be the current plight of the original yellow cabs who paid high prices for a medallion and had a virtual monopoly of the rides given to passengers. Who knew! Now, with the rise of Uber (and several others), the monopoly has vanished. So…what does all this mean to you, and how can you use SWOT in your personal life? Let’s examine each of the four words and compare their relevance to you. Before beginning, please observe the following guidelines: Select three people who know you very well. The first can be your partner in marriage, or someone who knows you very well. The other two should be friends who also know you. Ask each one how they would rank you in each of the four categories. Do this separately, then compare the answers to each category, and obtain an average for all four. {Note: Do not get upset or angry with anyone, and always weed out any extreme bias to each question.} Strengths: What are you really good at? What are the reasons that people like you? Is it your personality or the way you have

a natural tendency to put others at ease, or is it the way that you can easily defer anger in others? I’m sure that you have other trait clusters, which add to your personal inventory. Weaknesses: Let’s face it, all of us have our weak spots, and in those who are ranking, some areas that you were not aware of might come to the surface. This list gives you a real opportunity to work on these faults and become a better person in the bargain. Opportunities: Here is a great way to become a well-rounded personality with a chance to really shine. What might be some opportunities open to you? Every case is different; here are just a few: volunteering for a charity, helping out in little league, volunteering in your school to become a “reader” (this is especially good if you have a son or daughter in the school). As a veteran, I discovered a real opportunity in volunteering to help out my brothers in our local VA center. Threats: What stands in your way in coping through everyday life? Not getting personal, but perhaps it could be money or family problems, or a host of others that stand in your way. You know best on this. ‘Nuff said. Summary: All of the above traits, now customized for you, really work. So why not get started and SWOT yourself for the many benefits available to you?

Northport High School’s Early Child Education program has 16 available openings for the Two-Year Old Toddler Program for the 2018-2019 school year. The district will be holding a lottery for NorthportEast Northport residents only to fill these spots. In this program, each toddler will be paired with a student from Northport’s Family and Consumer Science class, where students will be studying toddler development. The classroom where the program is held is specially designed with learning tools and age-appropriate toys for toddlers aged 2 through 4. The goal of the program is to introduce the children to a classroom environment, provide

opportunity for them to learn to separate from their caregivers, and interact with their peers. In order to qualify for this program, toddlers must be 2 years of age on or before December 31st, 2018, families must be residents of the Northport-East Northport School District, and the students will have the ability to regularly attend the program, which is vital to the success of the program. This class is tentatively scheduled to meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays for one high school class period. The time will be determined during late summer, and the start date will be established in mid-September 2018. There is no cost for the

program, and parents are responsible for their own transportation of their child. For interested families, the completed Lottery Application Form is due by April 20. Applications can be found on the district’s website at www.northport. k12.ny.us. Lucky Because Students at Elwood Middle School took time to reflect on the different ways they considered themselves lucky on March 14th. The YES Club, comprised of students who have been recognized by their friends and fellow classmates as being a “helper” within the Elwood school community, regularly develops ideas to promote a positive school

environment. In the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, they organized an activity to help their peers reflect on their “luckiness” in life. During their lunch periods, students picked up cut-out four-leaf clovers and filled the spaces with reasons they were lucky. Afterward, students taped their clovers on the wall for all to see. Many students expressed

how lucky they felt to have such an awesome school community, friends and family. “Elwood is ‘lucky’ to have such supportive, hardworking students and staff,” said YES Club coordinator Kelsie Wilkinson, “who are trying to promote a positive school climate daily.”

Students from Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfileds Central School District raised funds to helped grant a child’s wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation last spring. Alexa, a girl from Port Jefferson who is challenged with a neuromuscular disorder, wished to go to Greece, and the Harborfields community made that possible for her. On March

14th, students received a special visit from Alexa. She came to thank the school for raising funds to make her wish come true. Alexa shared slides, stories and more from her trip to Greece. The students loved hearing from Alexa, and had many questions for her. In addition to Alexa’s visit, students learned about the child that Washington Drive is supporting this

year. Landen, who is also from Port Jefferson and is battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia, wishes to go to Ocean City, Maryland. Students were encouraged to help by doing things like donating their allowance, organizing a car wash to name a few. As a school, Washington Drive will be walking for Make-A-Wish on April 21st at 9 a.m.

Use shelving, wire racks, hooks and other organizational tools to store items on the wall. Shelves can be tucked into just about any space, and there are different options that can ﬁt into corners or shallow areas. These are a great option for keeping detergent or other laundry essentials nearby.

Clean designs reduce clutter

Simple, clean designs can be an asset in a laundry room. If budget and space permits, cabinetry built into the design will help keep items out of sight in the laundry room. Cabinets hung directly above the appliances can store detergent, bleach and fabric softener. Use cabinets elsewhere in the room as catch-alls for cleaning supplies used in various other rooms around the house.

Incorporate a sink in the design

Some older laundry room setups have a slop sink to drain discharged water from the washing machine. However, newer homes may have plumbing installed directly through the ﬂoor or walls. It is still a worthwhile idea to have a sink in the laundry room for rinsing out stains, handwashing items and having a go-to sink for messier cleanup.

Utilize a tension rod

A rod installed between two cabinets or across a narrow width of space in the

laundry room is a handy spot to hang shirts or pants to prevent wrinkling. Repurposing a ladder and suspending it from the ceiling also creates a spot to hang clothes.

Consider laundry room ﬂooring

An organized and efﬁcient laundry room setup can make washing and drying clothes easier.

It’s important to select flooring materials that will not be damaged by contact with moisture or spills. Vinyl, tile and some composite products often make good laundry room floor materials. Resilient flooring that mimics the look of hardwood may add a classy touch, and give the appearance of wood without having to worry about damage. To alleviate fatigue

while spending long moments in the laundry room, invest in a memory foam mat that can be placed underfoot.

Keep lighting in mind

Lighting can be important in the laundry room. Rely on task lighting, under-cabinet strip lighting and overhead lights as needed for efﬁciency.

ardening enthusiasts may have been thinking about their landscape plans throughout the winter, eager to once again get their hands dirty with soil. Whether a home gardener is making preparations for edible crops or beautiful ﬂowers, he or she must take time to make the soil amenable to planting. To establish hearty, durable plants, gardeners can focus on three main areas: addressing soil composition, cultivating and adding nutrients.

the soil. Mother Earth News suggests working on garden soil when the soil is damp but never wet; otherwise, garden soil can become messy and clumpy. Use a digging fork or shovel to lightly turn the soil when it’s mostly dry. Gentle tillings also can open up the soil to incorporate the nutritional amendments and relieve compaction that likely occurred from freezing temps and snow pressure. Tilling also helps with drainage and oxygen delivery to roots. The DIY Network suggests turning over soil at a depth of 12 inches to work the soil — about the length of a shovel spade. However, the resource Earth Easy says that existing garden beds have a complex soil ecosystem and simply top-dressing with compost or manure can be enough preparation for planting. Gardeners can experiment with the methods that work best for their gardens.

Take a sample of the soil and examine it to see what is present. If the soil is too full of clay, too sandy, too dense or too loose, that can lead to problems where plants cannot grow in strong. Work with a garden center to add the right soil amendments to make a rich soil. This may include organic compost or manure, which will also add nutrients to the soil.

Cultivation

Cultivating the soil can involve different steps. Removal of weeds, errant rocks, roots and other items will help prepare

Testing the pH and the levels of certain nutrients in the soil, namely nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, will give gardeners an idea of other soil additions that may be needed. Soils with a pH below 6.2 often can beneﬁt from the addition of lime several weeks before planting. Soil tests will determine just how much fertilizer to add to the soil. Complete fertilizers will have equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Individual fertilizers can amend the soil with only these nutritional elements that are needed. Top-dressing empty beds with a layer of mulch or compost can prevent weed growth and preserve moisture until it is time to plant. If existing shrubs or plants are in garden beds, use more care so as not to disturb roots or dig too deeply. Preparing garden beds takes some effort initially, but can be well worth the work when plants ﬂourish throughout the growing season.

A year after the Press Club of Long Island published an unprecedented report card grading nearly 200 municipalities and agencies on their responsiveness to public records requests, some that scored poorly made improvements in how they handle Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests while others did not. The cumulative grade was a C in the project done by Timothy Bolger, editor in chief of the Long Island Press and PCLI’s Freedom of Information Committee chair. “Suffolk County has reviewed software and is developing a FOIL request/ response process for all county departments to access and use,” said a spokesman for the county, which scored a C+. “In addition, the county implemented a search query on the home page of its website in an effort to allow for easier navigation of the site and easier access to FOIL forms.”

In Nassau, which got a D+, Norma Gonsalvez, then presiding officer of the county legislature, led a review of the report card’s findings. The panel made one change as a result: “We added the link to the FOIL request to the sidebar on the county website to make it easier to find/ access,” legislative aide Matthew Fernando said. Besides changes in policy, there has also been changes in personnel since last year. Republican Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, whose adminstration got an F in the report and is currently on trial for corruption charges, was replaced by Democrat Laura Curran, who promised to do better than her predecessor. “The Curran administration promises transparency, including the FOIL process,” said Curran’s spokesman. “The system is already being reviewed and improved by the county attorney’s office.”

In Step

On the village level, Roslyn Harbor passed new FOIL rules shortly after it got an F. Island Park publicly vowed to improve its complete lack of responsiveness. Some, such as Baxter Estates, which did not have a FOIL policy last year, produced one in a sampling this winter. LI’s 97 villages got a cumulative grade of C in the report. But not all heeded the findings. The Village of Cedarhurst, which also got an F, now prominently placed FOIL rules on its website indicating that requests must be made in person at village hall - the type of prohibitive policies that make it more difficult for the public to access records and decreases government transparency. The report and the update were released for Sunshine Week, an annual national initiative highlighting the importance of access to public records.

My Spring Awakening I have never seen the play which bears my title, nor am I especially familiar with its subject matter; however, I feel it an appropriate moniker on this, March 21st, as I begin to put my thoughts together for the column you are reading. To start, I have been curious for some time as to why the dates for the first “official” days of each of our four seasons seem to fluctuate year to year when, back in school, the calendar remained fairly standard. The Summer and Winter Solstices fell on June 21st and December 21st, respectively; and the Vernal and Autumnal Equinoxes occurred on March 21st and September 23rd, without fail. Now, it seems most have been pushed up by an entire day, throwing my entire elementary school curriculum into question.

Upon doing a bit of research, it seems this variance is due to a combination of factors; namely, that the earth’s elliptical orbit is gradually changing year after year, causing a slight difference in when the planet reaches its 90-degree intervals around the sun, signaling the change of season. Additionally, the concept that days of Equinox result in the precisely equal separation of day and night is also not quite accurate. This, apparently, is due to atmospheric conditions which lead to “refraction,” leading us to believe we are seeing the sun slightly prior to its rise and a bit past its set.

Scout Sunday Observance

The Matinecock District scouts and their volunteer scouting leaders participated in the annual “A Scout is Reverent Week,” in recognition of the Boy Scouts of America and the 12th point of the Scout Law, during the first week in February. The youths attended and took part in leading services at all of the houses of worship both in the host Churches and Temples as well as at their local places of worship (some of which are the Cub Scout Pack, Boy Scout Troop, Venturing Crew or Explorer Post’s sponsoring organization). Cub Scouts from local Cub Scout Packs with the assistance of their parents, leaders

and Chaplain recently completed the Light of Christ and Parvuli Dei Catholic Scout Religious Emblems programs. These courses consist of activities and Bible studies designed to help the Scout become more aware of God’s presence in his daily life, especially within the home and community. By completing the requirements the Scout has strengthened their spiritual growth and religious knowledge. Presentations of the Catholic Cub Scout Religious Emblems were made during the Celebration of the Mass at St. Elizabeth of Hungary in Melville on Scout Sunday services. The Boy Scouts

of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for millions of America’s youth. Scouting has brought families and communities together for more than 100 years to prepare America’s youth to live, work, and play with character and integrity. Scouting is as vital and relevant today as it was when our journey began. The Scout Sunday tradition was started to make people in houses of worship aware of Scouting, and to allow Scouts to live out their “Duty to God” pledged each week.” During the presentation of the Cub Scout Religious Emblems Father Irinel, gave the explanation of the medals and read each of the Cub Scout’s names for the Light of Christ recipients and the names for the Parvuli Dei recipients. There were two Cub Scouts who were presented with the Light of Christ and one Cub Scout who received their Parvuli Dei Catholic Cub Scout religious emblems. Light of Christ recipients are Mason Eastwood and Chris Goldman of Cub Scout Pack 406 (South Huntington). The Parvuli Dei recipient was David Braithwaite of Pack 66 (South Huntington).

Honored for Service Congratulations were the order of the evening as Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly joined Huntington Community First Aid Squad Chief Casey Orr, officers, commissioners, members and their families at the Squad’s 50th Anniversary Installation and Inspection Celebration on Saturday, March 3rd at the Crest Hollow Country Club. Legislator Donnelly presented a special 50th Anniversary Proclamation to the HCFAS, thanking everyone for their

enduring dedication and commitment to community and also honored 50-year member Robert Loysch for five decades of volunteer service. On December 27th, 1967, the Huntington Community First Aid Squad was formed as an emergency service with on-duty, in-house crews responding to calls on a 24/7, 365 days a year basis. Since its inception, the Squad has grown to over 280 members and responds to over 6,000

calls in a given year. Mr. Loysch joined the squad in January 1968. “We are extremely grateful to all of the Huntington Community First Aid Squad volunteers over the past 50 years for their selfless service to our residents,” said Legislator Donnelly. “It was a privilege to be able to thank and honor these volunteers, especially 50-year member Robert Loysch, for his ongoing commitment to the Huntington community.”

LIHSA Scholarship Gala Renowned tenor Vincent Ricciardi has performed on countless stages throughout the world in the years since he graduated from high school, but he always thinks of the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) stage as home. He, along with dozens of other alumni, will come back home on April 20th for the LIHSA Scholarship Gala. The gala is a memorable evening of spectacular performances,

all to raise money for the LIHSA scholarship fund. “I will always support the Long Island High School for the Arts. It’s necessary for kids like me that need a place to perform and learn a craft that they love,” said Mr. Ricciardi, a concert artist who specializes in Opera, Jazz, Broadway and Opera/pop crossover favorites. The LIHSA Class of 2000 Theatre alumnus grew up in Deer Park. The annual event is an opportunity for alumni

and faculty to perform together and to share a variety of talents that they honed while attending LIHSA, including dancing, singing and acting. Visual artists will have their work on display and for sale in the school’s art gallery. The gala features an eclectic range of performances, from opera and guitar solos to sketch comedy and modern dance. Alumni are always excited to participate and give back to a school that

helped shape who they are today. “Attending the Long Island High School for the Arts entirely changed my life,” said Heather Conn, a professional dancer and student in the LIHSA Class of 2020. “This school and its people did so much for me, how could I not give whatever I can back to it? I carry LIHSA with me every day of my life, in who I am and what I do. LIHSA shaped me, not only as an artist, but also as a human being.”

Heather performs with the Orsano Dance Project, directed by LIHSA alumnus Phil Orsano and Nickerson-Rossi Dance. She has performed in such notable venues as Jacob’s Pillow and Radio City Music Hall. “Just being invited to share the stage with all of these talented artists who also went here is incredible,” said Sarah Sixt, an actor, writer, comedian and 2008 LIHSA Theatre alumna who

grew up in Locust Valley and is now living in New York City. “This place has such a warm and inviting energy. Easter Sunrise Worship Service The Long Island Council of Churches invites one and all to its annual Ecumenical Easter Dawn worship service at Jones Beach State Park on April 1st at 6:30 a.m. The service will be led by people from many denominations and people of all faiths are welcome. The preacher will be the Rev. Thomas W. Goodhue, a retired United Methodist clergyman and Executive Director Emeritus of the Council. He also will tell a story to children (and the young at heart) from his collection “Sharing the Good News with Children,” published by Franciscan Media. Liturgical dancers from St. David’s Episcopal Church in Cambria Heights, led by Carol Callendar, will perform. In addition, the Bethpage New Apostolic Church choir and the men’s choir

from Woodbury New Apostolic Church will both sing. Other worship leaders will include the Rev. Ron Garner, pastor of Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church, the Rev. Moira Ahearne from Community Presbyterian Church in Merrick and Yolanda Murray from the LICC’s Freeport office. The Council of Churches has been hosting this annual event for many years. “It has grown steadily over the past fifteen years or so,” Goodhue notes, “drawing hundreds of people from all sorts of backgrounds. Easter celebrates something completely unexpected, Jesus being raised from the dead and God triumphing over injustice. This worship service always celebrates the Resurrection in some way that is fresh and new. This year we will have the

liturgical dancers from Cambria Heights for the first time and two choirs from the New Apostolic Church, the newest denomination to join the Council of Churches. I’m glad to be leading it one more time.” The service will begin at 6:30 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, Parking Field 6. This is just east of the East Bathhouse, which itself is east of the Wantagh Parkway. Look for a large blue Long Island Council of Churches banner. The service will be brief (about half an hour) and fairly informal. Dress warmly and bring a blanket or beach chair. Donations for the LICC’s emergency food pantries and monetary contributions for the pantries will be gladly received.
