Youth Conservation Program Under Governor Cuomo’s Open for Fishing and Hunting initiative, a two-day, hands-on program on hunting safety will be offered on April 26th and 27th by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Sportsman Education Program, the agency announced today. “Hunting and fishing

are an important part of Long Island’s heritage, and we are very fortunate that the region offers a multitude of diverse and rewarding recreational opportunities,” said DEC Commissioner Joe Martens. “The 2014 Youth Conservation Program is the perfect way to introduce the next generation of sportsmen and women to hunting ethics and teach them

Participants who successfully complete the program will receive their Hunter Education Training Certificate. This certificate is required in order to purchase a hunting license. Governor Cuomo’s NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative is an effort to improve recreational activities for sportsmen and sportswomen and to boost tourism opportunities throughout the state. This initiative includes the streamlining of fishing and hunting licensing and reducing license fees, improved access for fishing at various sites across the state and increasing hunting opportunities in various regions. This year, Governor Cuomo unveiled the NYS Adventure License, which allows outdoor enthusiasts, boaters, anglers and hunters to consolidate their recreation licenses and benefits onto their New York State Driver’s License, and the NYS Adventure License Plates, featuring nine plate designs available for free to those buying new lifetime hunting, fishing or park licenses in 2014. In support of this initiative, this year Governor Cuomo has proposed creating 50 new land access projects to connect hunters, anglers, bird watchers and others who enjoy the outdoors to more than 380,000 acres of existing state and easement lands that have gone untapped until now. Staff from The Nature Conservancy confirmed recently the presence of a pair of nesting Bald Eagles at The Conservancy’s Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island, New York. The eagle nest at Mashomack Preserve is just the third known nesting site in the Long Island region in recent times. Tucked away high in an oak tree in a remote, hard to access location, the birds were discovered by Nature Conservancy’s Preserve Manager Mike Scheibel, who said, “Bald eagles have

recently become a regular sight on Shelter Island. We are extremely pleased to find them nesting on the Mashomack Preserve where years ago The Nature Conservancy preserved this land as a secure nesting area for ospreys. It is indeed rewarding to know that this valuable habitat is now also home to our national symbol.” Edged in white by 12-miles of coastline, Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island is considered one of the richest habitats in the Northeast. the preserve covers a third of Shelter Island with 2,039 acres of interlacing tidal creeks, mature oak woodlands, fields, and freshwater marshes and is often referred to as the “Jewel of the Peconic Bay.” “The fact that bald eagles are nesting at Mashomack speaks to the value of preserved land and its significance for wildlife,” said Michael Laspia, Director of Mashomack Preserve. “We couldn’t be happier that our national bird is gracing us with its presence –and we hope this majestic species has a successful season rearing its young here.” Mashomack was purchased by The Nature Conservancy 34 years ago, in an effort to stop development of this nearly pristine peninsula and to protect an important concentration nesting ospreys along the northeast coast. The bald eagle is an opportunistic feeder and subsists mainly on fish, although capable of catching live fish bald eagles are primarily scavengers feeding on dead fish found on the beach or stolen from ospreys. Ensuring that healthy fish populations – and good water quality is maintained in the Peconic Bay and other Long Island waters is a top priority for The Conservancy. “Decades ago, protecting land was enough to ensure the survival and viability of our local wildlife, but today our efforts are concentrated on keeping the lands and especially the waters around Long Island clean and healthy,” said Nancy Kelley, Executive Director of The Nature Conservancy on Long Island. “It’s especially important that we do everything we can to avert threats –like nitrogen pollution in our waters –so that our majestic wildlife species can survive and thrive here.”

Talking Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love … This is the topic I selected for my upcoming presentation at the annual C.W. Post Honors Conference, a oneday schedule of seminars and panels, lectures and performances, all centered around a common theme, this year’s being Creative Engagement. When initially approached about the prospect of being a part of this Conference, one I had attended each year of my own tenure at C.W. Post, my first reaction was the usual mix of anxiety and sheer terror that comes when any form of public speaking is broached. And this, for an entire hour, in front of the best and the brightest my alma mater has to offer? I could feel the panic setting in, and the event was still months away.

Now, only one week remains ‘til the big day – and I’m still wrestling with what, exactly, I have to offer this group of impressionable young minds, all at the point in their lives where they are desperately trying to do exactly what my title suggests – discover that passion which will drive them into a particular field, hopefully to stay, for a long and fulfilling career. I guess a good starting point would be the initial inspiration for my topic, a letter I received from a local reader many months ago, in response to a column I had recently published, stating: “I wanted to let you know that indeed your words were read and inspired someone… as a humble writer myself, I know that is all we really want after all.” Creative Engagement at its best, no? Just the knowledge that my words had reached someone is some of the most positive feedback one can receive.

This is not to say that we all need constant pats on the back in order to feel valued and successful (although some certainly do). It simply reaffirms the notion that what we do for a living should be more than a job; it should reach far beyond the scope of merely being a means to an end, a way to pay the bills, etc. Above all else, it should engage YOU. If others find a similar connection through you, so much the better, an added bonus. I still don’t know exactly what I will say once I step to the head of the classroom a little over a week from now. But I suppose a good starting point is simply speaking openly and honestly and attempting to make a connection. And if I can reach even one person and help them discover his/her own passion in life, I will consider it a success.

In addition, the Governor’s 2014-2015 budget proposes to: include $4 million to repair the state’s fish hatcheries; limit the liability of landowners who allow recreational activities on their properties, which could open up vast, untapped resources for additional hunting, fishing and many other recreational pursuits; and allow crossbow hunting once again in New York State.

The Mentoring Partnership of Long Island (MPLI), the leading organization for providing quality mentoring opportunities for Long Island’s youth, held its 10th Annual Mentoring Matters Conference, presented by AT&T, on March 13th-14th at the LIU Post campus in Brookville. MPLI partner, and Mentoring Matters Conference Title Sponsor, AT&T, kicked off the twoday conference with a $20,000 check presented to MPLI, along with key elected officials, and LIU Post representatives in support of youth mentoring programs. The Mentoring Matters Conference two-day conference brought together participants and advocates from Long Island’s youth mentoring community, who participated in educational sessions and workshops designed to further their involvement in mentoring programs. All Kids Fair The 4th Annual All Kids Fair takes place on Sunday, April 27th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Melville Marriott - Long Island. The event is dedicated to bringing together individuals, businesses, and non-profit organizations with children from birth through high school age and their families. The All Kids Fair is part education and activities expo and part health and wellness fair. In over 80 exhibitor spaces, many available programs and services will be presented, including after school activities, birthday party ideas, schools, camps, health and wellness products and services, special needs, financial services, day cares, and tutoring. In four speaker rooms, some classes will be focused on the adults and others will be geared towards children. Topics for the adults include childhood obesity and treatments for varicose veins from pregnancy. Classes for the children and their families to enjoy together include music, crafts, and fitness classes.

For their attendees’ convenience, a new addition to this year’s event is free valet parking. Also, QuackerJack of the Long Island Ducks will be visiting and taking photos with the kids. Many non-profits will be participating in this year’s event. Those who bring non-perishable food to benefit The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) will receive raffle tickets to win desirable prizes, such as Long Island Ducks tickets. Penelope’s Odyssey will once again offer simple cheek swabbing of adults for the lifesaving National Bone Marrow Registry. At last year’s event, Lori Schneider of Penelope’s Odyssey shared that she “enjoyed the day and all the people we met. I am amazed at how many wonderful businesses and organizations you had represented.” Last year, 26 altruistic people were swabbed, and she hopes to beat that number this year. 50 Teams To Compete After six weeks of developing, building, and programming their robots, high school students from Long Island, New York City, New Jersey, and Brazil will have the opportunity to compete in the 15th Annual SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (www.usfirst.org), presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of New York, Inc. (SBPLI). The competition will take place on March 27th-29th at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports & Exhibition Complex in Hempstead, New York. Fifty teams will demonstrate their skills in science and technology while competing for honors that reward design excellence, competitive play, sportsmanship, and high-impact partnerships among schools, businesses, and communities. Founded by inventor Dean Kamen, who introduced the IBOT Mobility System and the Segway® Human Transporter (HT), FIRST was created to inspire an appreciation of science and technology in young people, their schools, and their communities. Now in its 25th season, the FIRST Robotics Competition anticipates more than 2,700 teams in 92 cities worldwide to compete in 98 Regional and District Competitions. More than 2,000 students will compete at the Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition to earn a spot at the FIRST Championship, to be held April 24-27 at the Edward

Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri. This year’s challenge, “Aerial AssistSM,” is played by two Alliances of three teams each. Alliances compete by trying to score as many balls as possible into goals during a two-and-a-half-minute match. Additional points are earned by robots working together to score goals, and by throwing and catching balls over a truss suspended just over five feet above the floor as they move the ball down the field. “The students who participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition are not only building robots; they are building character, self-respect, and relationships with their peers,” said Dean Kamen, president of DEKA Research & Development and FIRST Founder, adding, “Winning the game is fun, but the importance of FIRST is that you’ll get much more out of it than you put in, and it’s going to change the rest of your life.” “We are extremely excited to see what our participants for the FIRST Robotics Competition have in store for us in this year’s challenge,” said Joani Madarash, Executive Director, SBPLI. “The SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition is the highlight of these students’ academic careers. Letter Writing Campaign The Harborfields Central School District has launched a letter-writing campaign to local and state legislators to ask their assistance in supporting the restoration of Gap Elimination Adjustment funds to the district, in addition to the GEA’s repeal. Formerly known as the Deficit Reduction Assessment, the GEA’s original purpose was to reduce state support to public schools in order to close the state’s own $10 billion budget deficit. Over the past three years, the GEA has reduced state aid to Long Island school districts by close to $1 billion. In Harborfields specifically, the GEA reduction for the current year is $1,851,913 and totals $9,272,526 for the past five years. In an attempt to lessen the negative effects of the

GEA, districts have been relying on fund balances and reserve funds to minimize detrimental cuts to educational programs and to maintain a tax levy increase local taxpayers can support. The GEA has resulted in the layoff of approximately 60 staff members in Harborfields, including teachers, administrators and support staff; reduced athletic, music and arts programs; reduced enrichment and summer programs; and postponed facilities preservation efforts. The 2014-2015 Executive Budget Proposal for New York State restores only $46,297 to Harborfields, a truly insignificant value – even more insignificant when compared to other regions of New York State. The GEA cumulative restoration to the district over the past four years

is estimated at 14.3% significantly lower than the statewide estimate of 41.2%. “We hope a large percentage of the Harborfields community participates in the letterwriting campaign,” said Superintendent of Schools Diana Todaro. “We need to make our voices heard by our elected officials that this aid needs to be restored to our district. Harvard Ready In an attempt to learn what it takes to become “Harvard Ready,” a popular phrase used by the Elwood Union Free School District, students in Mrs. Zatulskis’ third-grade class at James H. Boyd Intermediate School wrote to scholars at Harvard University. To their surprise, the Boyd students received a letter back from Harvard President Drew Faust, who

shared her wisdom with the students. President Faust advised the students to pursue ideas and activities that capture their interest, have a passion for learning, study hard, and read and write as much as possible. She also encouraged them to remember that teachers are a wonderful resource and to work closely with them throughout their educational careers.

In addition to President Faust’s correspondence, each student in Mrs. Zatulskis’ class received a personal response letter from a Harvard student, as well as a Harvard sticker, fact sheet and brochure. “Thank you to President Faust and the Harvard students,” said Mrs. Zatulskis. “We, too, can strive to be ‘Harvard Ready!’”

On Tuesday, March 18th, Republican Caucus Chairman John M. Kennedy, Jr. honored the Suffolk County Woman of the Year, Gina Coletti, at a meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature. Ms. Coletti, who grew up in Dix Hills, currently lives in Nesconset with her husband Robert and daughters Lauren and Jaclyn. In addition to all of her work in the community, Ms. Coletti is a successful businesswoman as a Real Estate Appraiser. She received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Finance from the New York Institute of Technology. Gazebo, Nesconset Day Street Fair, Nesconset 5-K Run, Chanukah Celebration Menorah Lighting and Christmas Tree Lighting. Ms. Coletti, who was first chosen as the Woman of the year in the 12th Legislative District was then chosen as Suffolk County Woman of the Year from a pool of 18 nominees, one from each Suffolk County Legislative District. “Gina is a wonderful representative of the community, both as a businesswoman and parent and community advocate,” said Legislator Kennedy. “I have been extremely lucky and it is my honor to have worked and continue to work with Gina to better our hometown and Legislative District. About the Juror: Liz Jorg Masi attended Parsons School of Design studying Fashion Illustration and

had a successful career as a commercial artist, freelancing for Harpers Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, and Henri Bendel to name a few. In 2003, Liz retired and turned to Fine Art to study at the Art Students League in NYC and at the Scottsdale Art School to study with top artists. Focusing on Oil, Liz also paints in Pastel and Watercolor, not only portrait but landscape and still life as well. Liz has won in excess of 75 awards locally and nationally and is a signature member of P.S.A.- P.W.C.S.- N.E.W.S. HISPANIC YOUTH TASK FORCE - Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci was recently visited by members of Walt Whitman High School’s Hispanic Youth Task Force in his district office. (NAPSI)—To help protect you and your family from tobacco-related death and disease, researchers from Legacy®, a national public health organization dedicated to building a world where anyone can quit smoking, recommend two actions: stop smoking or never start. If you do smoke or use tobacco, speak to your doctor about quitting smoking. A survey of more than 3,146 adults in the U.S. conducted by Legacy discovered that more than one in 10 smokers have concealed their smoking status from a health care provider—nearly half of them stated it was because they are ashamed that they smoke. Another reason for not disclosing this important information to a medical professional: two-thirds surveyed who did not disclose their smoking status reported not wanting to be lectured about smoking. Fortunately, health care professionals such

as doctors, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, dentists and pharmacists can help smokers by bringing up the subject with patients. To assist with that, Legacy and Pfizer have developed a downloadable, userfriendly guide for health care providers to help them discuss smoking and tobacco use with their patients. Here are hints to help: • Talk openly about smoking. Ask every patient if they smoke. This may open the door to successful intervention. • Be positive and encouraging. Smokers are often dealing with shame or fear of quitting. Congratulate the smoker on the decision to quit and reiterate how you are there to help them on their journey. • Encourage smokers not to give up. Smoking is a chronic, relapsing medical condition; the average smoker tries to quit 6/9 times in their

lifetime. Remind smokers that quitting is difficult, but can be attainable. • Make sure smokers understand smoking for what it really is: a treatable medical condition. • Suggest patients consider evidencebased treatments, such as over-the-counter or prescription medications, and refer them to counseling to help them quit. Patients can call the national toll-free quitline, (800)-QUIT-NOW, for free counseling or seek help from no-cost websites such as www.BecomeAnEX.org. • Arrange follow-up contact as necessary to try to prevent relapse. With less than forty school days of my senior year left, I am beginning to understand why people are always talking about savoring the moment. As a high school senior, I am very excited to be “in the home stretch,” even though this means that I am one step closer to leaving my home, my school and my family. With just about four months before I leave, I find myself spending more time with my brother. Lately, we have been bonding over the simplest things. Perhaps, this is because he will be sad when I

leave for college, like my mom predicts; however I have my own theory. I believe that I am the one who will miss him when I leave for college! As the primary agent of my socialization for these past seventeen years, my family has had a ridiculous impact on my personality. My brother, more than anyone, has shaped my life. He is the peanut butter to my jelly; my little brother has always been there for me. Even though I am counting down the days before I hit the road, I am well aware that my days with family

are numbered. I know that I am going to miss them. Even though I will love college, I will miss playing catch with my little brother on the front lawn. I will miss my mom’s cooking, and I will miss my dad’s antics. As I cross off each day on the calendar of my high school career, I can say that I enjoyed every minute that I spent with my friends and family. When I start the next chapter of my life, I will not forget the memories that have been formed or the bonds that I have made with my friends, and most importantly, my brother.
