Northport High School’s Early Childhood Education program has 16 available openings for the 2-YearOld Toddler Program for the 2020-21 school year. The district will be holding a lottery for NorthportEast Northport residents to fill these spots. Each toddler will be paired with a student from Northport’s Family and Consumer Science class, where students will be studying toddler development twice a week. The goal of the program is to introduce the children to a classroom environment, provide opportunity for them to learn to separate from their caregivers, and interact with their peers. In order to qualify for this program, toddlers must be 2 years of age on or before Dec. 31, 2020 and families must be residents of the NorthportEast Northport School District. There is no cost for the program. For interested families, the completed Lottery Application Form is due by April 24. Beautiful landscaping can add instant curb appeal to a property. But beauty isn’t the only thing that makes idyllic landscaping attractive to homeowners. Some landscaping features, such as shade trees, save homeowners money while adding aesthetic appeal. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home. Shading also cuts air conditioning costs, which tend to be expensive in areas with warm, humid climates. In fact, the DOE notes that well-planned landscapes can reduce unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by anywhere from 15 to 50 percent. When planting shade trees, one of the first decisions homeowners will need to make is which type of tree, deciduous or evergreen, they want to plant. Deciduous trees are those that seasonally shed their leaves, while evergreens are trees that keep their leaves throughout the year. Deciduous trees can help keep homes cool in the summer by blocking sun, and those same trees can be beneficial in winter after they shed their leaves by letting the sun in and keeping homes warm.

What Causes Curled Shingles?

Students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School have been challenged to read at least 20 minutes every day from Feb. 10 through Feb. 14 as part of the school’s Pick a Reading Partner, or PARP, initiative. To get students excited about reading, several of the school’s teachers, including Principal Victoria Williams and Assistant Principal Andrea Horowitz, performed a brief play, during which they took the students through a tour of history. Students visited the Stone Age, Ancient Egypt, Early America, modern times and projected what life might be like in the future as part of the week’s theme: reading through history.

As coronavirus continues to impact Long Islanders, growing health concerns along with the constant barrage of news is raising people’s anxiety. Catholic Health Services’s (CHS) mental health professionals offer ways we can reduce our stress during this time of uncertainty. This includes eating healthy, exercise, adequate sleep, virtually

connecting with friends and family and reducing exposure to news and social media. “The constant ﬂow of information related to coronavirus can become overwhelming,” said Catholic Health Services Chairman of Behavioral Health Ronald Brenner, MD. “It’s important to take a break and step away from media reports and the

constant scrolling through social channels.” Anxiety is a normal response to a stressful situation and can inspire adaptive behavior in many situations. However, when facing mounting uncertainty, the brain can go into an anxiety spiral and cause atypical reactions. Knowing the body’s physical reactions to the different types of
