I’m always looking for signs. Except when I’m not, which makes them all the more poignant and undeniable. Case in point, the one year anniversary of my grandfather’s passing recently came and went on March 13th, bringing with it the anticipated mix of sadness and reﬂection that these milestones tend to create. Back on that day, one year ago, shortly after learning the devastating news, I stared blankly out my sliding glass door at the tree directly in front of my apartment, only to be met

with the gaze of one solitary robin. Sitting. Staring. I must have stood at that door for a solid half hour, mesmerized by this tiny bird, alone in a barren tree, his eyes fixated on me. Was it a sign? Was it just a matter of ironic timing? Who knows… I chose to find solace in the serenity of the moment, comfort in the quiet. A month later, we discovered a nest of four perfect robin’s eggs at my grandparents’ house, the first of its kind in that backyard, ever. We marveled at how it seemed to literally drop out of the sky at a most opportune moment, manifesting out of thin air,

a precious symbol that life does, in fact, go on. Fast forward to last week. I ran quickly to the store for a bunch of roses to bring to the cemetery, knowing that the impending “blizzard” and freezing temperatures would most likely destroy them in a matter of hours. As I headed back to the car, a sign for birdseed caught my eye. And then, it hit me. Suddenly, I heard chirping. Loud, incessant chirping. I turned around, searching for the source… and there it was, a single, solitary robin, sitting on the top of the pile. Some signs, you just don’t see coming.

Options for Community Living, Inc. has been selected by the New York State Office of Mental Health to receive two awards to provide housing and supportive services for adults recovering from mental illness. Funding under these contracts is more than $1.3 million annually, and it will assist 85 adults with their housing and service needs. One award will allow the agency to establish 22 new beds for Suffolk County residents in need of supportive housing. The second award will allow Options to assume the operation and management of 63 established beds/units. “Under Water,” based on a true story, was written and directed by local resident Bryan Fitzgerald. This program is designed to increase awareness of parents, educators, atrisk youth and their loved ones for signs of alcohol and drug addictions. The forum will cover reducing the likelihood of addictions through family and community based education, as well as the variety of available resources for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of addictions. Join the members of the Commack-Kings Park Rotary Club along with professionals from the treatment community, local school districts and various support groups dedicated to those who are addicted as well as the loved ones who are adversely affected by addiction. Fourth-grade band members and their families at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School had the unique opportunity to participate in the school’s annual Fourth Grade Parent Band Night on March 13th. Family members learned about where their child started, how they have progressed and how far they will go with the right habits and mechanisms in place. In preparation for the

evening, students were encouraged to help teach their family members how to put their instrument together, hold it, make a basic sound and read notes and rhythms. After practicing and rehearsing as a group, under the direction of Harborfields High School band students and music faculty, family members performed a concert for their children. They learned three book

examples for the concert including “Rolling Along,” “Hot Cross Buns” and “Go Tell Aunt Rhodie.” “It gives families the opportunity to walk a mile in their child’s shoes by playing some melodies on their instrument in a brief performance made specifically for the band students and family,” said Music Department Coordinator Dan Bilawsky.

James H. Boyd Intermediate School students celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday with the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day on March 1st.

Students and faculty members participated in a schoolwide read-in to honor Dr. Seuss. Classes lined the hallways with their books for a quiet reading hour. In addition,

librarian Mrs. Kossowsky dressed as The Cat in the Hat to celebrate the author while food service staff members decorated the lunch line with Dr. Seuss books.

Eighteen Northport High School students were selected by their guidance counselors and social studies teachers for a three day peer training workshop with the AntiDefamation League on March 2nd, 3rd and 6th. Known as the Anti-Bias Peer Training Program, students examined how to educate others on respect and acceptance while strengthening the school community. Workshop facilitators Nancy Kaplan and Jason Gerald led discussions on topics such as stereotyping, discrimination, diversity, prejudices and bigotry to give students the tools to promote an environment of acceptance. The program’s goal was to help students recognize prejudice and biases in themselves and others, develop a common language for discussing these topics and practice proper skills to confront them. At the workshop’s conclusion, students shared ideas and what they learned to peers and faculty members in the high school. “A program like this is important to the district because we value educating our students and helping them be better citizens,” said Assistant Principal Terrence Hinson. “I think one of the challenges is that we teach our students all these great things but they don’t get to practice it. This program allows them to practice and form a deeper understanding of respect, tolerance and being there for people.”

Northport High School Living Environment students in Mrs. Byler’s class recently collaborated with Cornell University in a Citizen Science Project to fight a voracious worm known as the Beet Armyworm. Students grew three lines of corn provided by Dr. Jander of the Boyce Thompson Institute at Cornell University. The corn was subjected to a controlled attack as the students applied three Armyworm pests to each of their 43 plants. Dr. Jander sent newly hatched caterpillars, all genetically identical, from his lab to Northport. Three tiny and destructive caterpillars did their best to devour each young plant while sealed

inside vented cellophane bags. One week later, the caterpillars were carefully removed and photographed. These images provided critical data that the students used to determine the size of each caterpillar. Using a National Institute of Health computer program “Image J,” students calculated the area of each individual caterpillar using their own photographs. Dr. Jander will use this data in his own lab’s research at Cornell to determine which corn line had the greatest natural resistance to the caterpillar’s feeding. By participating in this joint project with the Boyce Thompson Institute, students contributed

to efforts to crossbreed naturally resistant strains of corn that will not require harmful pesticides, providing a healthier way to produce food. This research is crucial in developing nations where the loss of just one crop to an insect can have devastating effects on struggling populations. Mrs. Byler and her students are grateful for the opportunity to work with Dr. Jander and the Boyce Thompson Institute on this project. Northport High School is also grateful to Academy of Information Technology Coordinator Danielle Milazzo for her assistance with the Image J software applications.

The Town of Huntington will celebrate Women’s History Month on Friday, March 24th, with a special showing of the film “Jackie” at the Cinema Arts Centre, followed by a lecture discussing the life of former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. The recently-released film, for which star Natalie Portman won an Oscar nomination for best actress, is described as a searing and intimate portrait of one of the

most important and tragic moments in American history, seen through the eyes of the iconic first lady. Following the showing, film historian Philip Harwood will speak about the former First Lady, her historic significance and the making of the film. Harwood currently teaches film studies and media studies as an adjunct lecturer in the Hutton House Lectures at Long Island University’s CW Post campus. He also teaches at

the 92nd Street Y and the JCC, both in Manhattan. He was Coordinator for Lifelong Learning at Queens College, where he also programmed the annual Summer Film Festival, and he taught at the New School for Social Research. Admission is free and includes the film, the lecture and refreshments. The program runs from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Cinema Arts Centre, 423 Park Avenue, Huntington.

National PTA Award

Northport High School senior Christian Ranieri was honored on March 8th by the National PTA with the 2017 Outstanding Youth Advocacy Award during the National PTA Legislative Conference in Arlington, VA. Upon this recognition, Ranieri also had the opportunity to attend a full day of

meetings on Capitol Hill on March 9th. The National PTA selected Ranieri from applicants across the country for being a powerful voice to others and advocating for children and students with disabilities. Among his many activities, Ranieri is currently a member of the New York State

Education Program’s Youth Advisory Panel and is a New York State Self Advocacy Association Youth Ambassador. He is also a strong advocate for autism awareness and as a junior, participated in Northport High School’s Autism Awareness Week where he helped organize events and spoke during a discussion panel. Going Green for Good East Northport Middle School students and faculty members raised money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation on March 8th with the help of SHE Salon. At the conclusion of the school day, individuals were encouraged to donate towards the cause and receive a green hair extension in return. The small fundraising

event was facilitated by the SHARE and Interact Club with all proceeds going towards the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and the school’s team the “East Northport Middle School Bald Tigers,” to put an end to childhood cancer. The school also had a leprechaun taking photos with those that passed in exchange for a donation.

Approximately 54 students participated in the hair extensions and photo opportunity to support the cause. East Northport Middle School created the team for the district’s St. Baldrick’s Day event on March 10th and raised more than $15,000 for the foundation.

Musical Experience

Two Norwood Avenue Elementary School students were recently selected as winners in Debbie Gibson’s Electric Youth Music Contest under the encouragement of their music teacher, Mrs. Edwards. The students won the exciting opportunity to

participate in a recording studio session with vocal training from legendary singer, actress and songwriter Debbie Gibson. Fourth-grader Kaitlin Gardella was chosen based on a video that she submitted of herself singing and playing the ukulele. She participated in a vocal workshop at a recording studio with Ms. Gibson and was coached one-on-one in recording the song “Lips are Movin’” by Meghan Trainer. Fifth-grader Mckenzie Maniscalco also entered the contest and was thrilled to meet with Debbie Gibson. “It was so much fun to

Wrestling through Obstacles East Northport Middle School seventh-graders received an inspiring lesson in overcoming life’s obstacles on March 10th with motivational speaker Rohan Murphy. Sponsored by the school’s PTA, Murphy, who was born with deformed legs, spoke to students about his positive outlook on life and his successful wrestling career in high school and at Penn State University. The school’s eighth

grade wrestling team also attended the special event and Murphy invited two members up on stage to help him demonstrate how he would wrestle in school. He encouraged students to overcome their hardships and never listen to anyone who tells them they cannot do something. “Outline your life in pencil, not pen,” said Murphy. “Don’t you ever be afraid to fail.” Through Murphy’s personal life story, he

spoke about how he pushed himself to always do better and had goals that he wanted to accomplish for himself. This included graduating from a prestigious college where he could live independently and make the Penn State University wrestling team, both of which he achieved. At the conclusion of the presentation, students had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about Murphy’s life.

High Arts Showcase The Huntington Arts Council is proud to announce the High Arts Showcase XIII student art exhibit. This show runs from March 30th through April 22nd. All are welcome to attend the student artist reception on Friday April 7th, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Main Street Gallery, 213 Main Street, Huntington NY 11743. This is a free event. High Arts Showcase is the Arts Council’s annual student exhibit featuring the artwork of 11th and 12th grade students attending one of our JOURNEY Program partner schools. In its 13th year, the Showcase will feature the artwork of over 40 students. The high level of skill and talent of these artists is represented in pieces which utilize a variety of mediums; photography, color pencil, sculpture, watercolor, paper mache, ink, pastel and mixed media. The school districts participating in our JOURNEY program

this year are Cold Spring Harbor, Commack, Harborfields, Huntington, Northport-East Northport, Plainview/Old Bethpage and South Huntington. “The JOURNEY program which was founded in 1985, is a multicultural arts-in-education program established to foster the appreciation of cultural diversity through the arts and integrating cultural arts into classroom curriculum. The High Arts Showcase is just one of the many components of the program. We are always so thrilled to be able to provide student artists the opportunity to show their work in a gallery setting. It is inspiring to see such a high level and depth of talent in young adults. Our gallery is open to everyone and I encourage you to stop by and see first hand how exceptional the work is!” said Marc Courtade Executive Director of the Huntington Arts Council In recognition of National Poetry Month, the artist reception will

be highlighted with a reading of original poetry by Allison Magnus a sophomore at Harborfields High School. Allison has a true passion for poetry and describes writing poetry “as a doorway to escape her normal reality and create a world that mixes imagination and emotion”. Long time artist member Bill Grabowski will join us at the reception and present awards of excellence to several students. He is a Huntington resident, multi-medium artist and elementary art educator. Bill seeks to creatively blend past traditions with new and evolving technologies and feels strongly that the Arts should link with the community. site parking within 1,500 feet on a non-residentially zoned parcel. As part of the proposed amendment, municipal lots will no longer be used to calculate residential parking for apartments over stores. The use of municipal lots will, however, continue to be

Taste of Culture The Elwood Union Free School District gathered for a celebration of cultures and delicious food from around the globe at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School’s ninth annual International Night on March 8th. Students, faculty members, administrators and families from the district visited stations throughout the high school cafeteria where they enjoyed food prepared by students. Organizations such as the Italian Club served Nutella covered pizzelle

and rafﬂed off a basket of BelGioioso cheeses, while the school’s International Club sold Pura Vida bracelets and t-shirts with money going towards the organization’s International Women’s Day fundraiser. “It’s an opportunity for everyone in the community to come together to celebrate other cultures and appreciate the diversity that we have in Elwood,” said foreign language teacher Nicole Gendjoian. Those that participated

in a station, were a part of a healthy competition where their food, station appearance and enthusiasm were judged. Winners were crowned at the end of the night and received gift cards for their job well done.
