The Art and Pleasure of Meditation Before getting into the subject, let’s divide our readers into two categories. The first are those who are faithful followers of yoga, who practice meditation regularly and find deep layers of inner peace within themselves. The second group are the many folks who have never tried meditating simply because they never had the opportunity (or desire) to pursue it. It is this group that today’s column is for. As a starter, let’s take a look at what is happening around the world today. Tensions are rising among many countries, trade wars are a real possibility, inflation is starting to come into play, the Federal Reserve may soon raise interest rates; that, plus the wild gyrations of the stock market, leave a host of uncertainties for many of us. Being affected by all of this, wouldn’t it be nice to have an outlet to channel these negative thoughts and events into a more calming, soothing state of mind? If so, welcome to the art and

pleasure of meditation! First off, by doing this at home, one does not need special equipment or any type of meditation room. What is necessary is a quiet room or a place in the home where you will not be interrupted. As you progress further into this skill, you will be able to take a few minutes to meditate anywhere you might be. The time spent in meditation could be as little as 5-10 minutes or up to an hour. As a starter, many people find that sitting cross-legged on the floor, both thumbs lightly touching, with hands outstretched, palms facing upward and eyes closed, is a good start. One should begin with deep breathing, inhaling, holding it for a few seconds, then slowly exhaling through the mouth. With practice, one can easily take in deeper breaths. I have found that this type of deep breathing, done 10 or 15 times, starts the cycle of relaxation and release of tension. {As a side note, I use this frequently when faced with

stressful situations, such as driving in heavy traffic. You can easily do this, keeping your eyes on the road at all times.} To aid in this process, many people prefer quietly repeating a special word that has meaning to them. Having spent much time in Asia, I chose one that I learned while studying there. A key point to remember about meditation is that, by going through the process, one insulates him or herself from everyday problems and nagging worries. Like most other things in life, one gets better with concentration and practice. At this point, let’s make one thing clear. I do not claim to be a meditation expert, just another person who found comfort and inner peace through self-learning and lots of practice. So…what are you waiting for? Start hunting for your quiet space now. You will find it very rewarding, with each session better than the previous one. Best of luck on your journey.

Sani Sport of Metro New York, using a specialized ozone chamber, sanitized the gear (deodorizing it in the process) so its new users can be confident about using it without a health risk. “This is a great program allowing the community to save money as well as giving the opportunity to many to play a sport that they might not be able to participate in due to the high cost of purchasing new equipment. It would be great if other communities would also implement a program like this,” Sani Sport president Bruce Moss said in an email volunteering his time and services. At the Sport Swap, they were able to redeem the vouchers for other equipment. Residents who did not donate were able to purchase equipment by donating $5 for each item purchased; all of the proceeds will be donated to charity. It may pass regardless, but at least we would be along for the ride, active participants in how we choose to use it rather than bystanders waiting for some phantom sign that this is it … NOW is your time! In reality “the” time is when you choose to acknowledge it, when you make it your mission to take control of your destiny and be a part of the process, instead of allowing it to happen to you. We know this, we believe this in the depths of our souls… now we need to use this knowledge to create the beautiful future we envision for ourselves.

H u n t i n g t o n Councilwoman Joan Cergol and the Huntington Youth Council thank all the residents who helped make the March 10th Sport Swap at the Dix Hills Rink such an overwhelming success. About 125 pieces of equipment – ice skates, hockey sticks and pads, baseball gloves, golf clubs and a tetherball set – found new homes and new users as a result of the Sport Swap, and $335 was collected for a charity to be selected by the Youth Council. “We had an amazing turnout, and I was gratified to see the smiles on children’s faces as they got new skates and gear, as well on parents’ faces for making purchases that did not squeeze their budgets,” Councilwoman Cergol said. “I want to

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) will hold their annual Spring Family Fishing Festival on Saturday, April 7th, at Belmont Lake State Park. Children participating in the casting contest will have a chance to win some great prizes supplied by DEC’s I FISH NY Program and The Natural Heritage Trust. Governor Cuomo has expanded recreational opportunities of residents and tourists, positioning New York State as a recreation destination, connecting communities to state lands, and improving the quality of life. Governor Cuomo’s NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative is an effort to improve recreational opportunities for sportsmen and women and to boost tourism activities throughout the state. This includes streamlining fishing and hunting licenses, reducing license fees, improving access for fishing, and increasing hunting opportunities in the state. In support of this initiative, $10 million in NY Works funding has been dedicated to fish hatchery repairs and 50 new land and water access projects such as boat launches, hunting blinds, trails, and parking areas. The Spring Fishing Festival has been designated a Free Fishing Event, so the freshwater fishing license requirement for anglers age 16 and older has been suspended for this event only. After 4 p.m., anglers will need a valid NYS freshwater fishing license to legally fish. The festival highlights DEC’s spring (March and April) trout stocking program in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Prior to the festival, Belmont Lake will be stocked with close to 1,000 brown, brook and rainbow trout by DEC. Additional brook and rainbow trout will be stocked by State Parks. Upper Twin Pond in Wantagh, Oyster Bay Mill Pond, Massapequa Creek and Reservoir, along with 17 other Long Island lakes will also be stocked with trout by DEC, providing excellent prospects for spring fishing in both

Nassau and Suffolk counties. To further encourage fishing, Governor Cuomo signed legislation in 2012 expanding the opportunity for free fishing clinics, allowing more New Yorkers to experience fishing for the first time by enabling DEC to increase the number of free clinics that can be held throughout the state. The Free Fishing Days program began in 1991 to allow all people the opportunity to sample the incredible fishing New York has to offer. This event will be held rain or shine. The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters,

local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Sunquam Elementary School in Melville recently invited Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly to participate in its annual “Mystery Reader Day.” The “Oh, the Places Reading Will Take You” themed event on Friday, March 2nd, was held in conjunction with the annual state-wide Pick a Reading Partner (PARP) program. Legislator Donnelly and other mystery readers were greeted by Sunquam

Principal Karen Littell and PARP Committee Mystery Reader Day Liaison Janie Pollack and then escorted through the school, which was decorated Dr. Suess-style to go with the theme, to their assigned classrooms. Legislator Donnelly began the first of his two mystery reader sessions in Ms. DiDomenico’s class where he was greeted by the first-grade students who asked him questions

about his job as a County Legislator. After reading to them, he shared a different book with Ms. Colavolpe’s fifth-grade class. “I thank the Sunquam community for allowing me to be a part of this wonderful reading event,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I was impressed by how enthusiastic and engaged the students were and applaud everyone who helped make it exciting and educational for all.”

Breaking the Record Members of Northport High School’s Suffolk County Championship Boys Track and Field Team dominated the State Championship on March 5th, capturing the State Title and placing second overall in the New York State Federation. Less than a week later, the four members of the team placed third in the

4 x 800-meter relay in the New Balance Indoor National Championships, held at the Armory in Manhattan on Mar. 10. For this placement, studentathletes Elijah and Isaiah Claiborne, Dan O’Connor and Thomas Fodor earned All-American Honors. They now hold the fastest indoor time in Suffolk County, surpassing West Islip’s

In addition, Isaiah Claiborne placed 4th in the mile, earning All-American honors for the 5th time. “These young men are truly remarkable,” said Northport-East Northport Athletic Director Mark Dantuono, “each of them possess an unparalleled will to push themselves beyond limits.”

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students came together to support a good cause and to take part in some healthy competition during the school’s annual Volleyballa-Thon on March 1st. This year’s chosen causes were the Sean Urda Memorial Soccer Scholarship,

Save the Kid and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. All 41 participating teams showed up to the competition in the high school gymnasium with matching team t-shirts, donning creative names such as “Elected to Serve” and “Set it and Forget it,”

as well as a whole lot of enthusiasm. Collectively, teams raised $3,010 for the selected causes. Each team competed on one of the four volleyball courts until one group, the “Birds,” was victorious and crowned the 2018 Volleyball-a-Thon champs.

Sophomore science researchers Jennifer Wood, Sophia Ciriello, Madison Mullman, Joseph DeVerteuil, Kayla Alers, and Kerri Rhatigan from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School won second place at the Northwell Medical Marvels Competition on March 9th. In preparation for the competition, students

wrote a 14-page proposal entitled “How to Deal with the Present Opioid Crisis.” This proposal was presented by the students, alongside 30 other schools from Nassau and Suffolk counties, and judged by researchers, doctors and experts in the field. This competition was established in 2013 by The Feinstein Institute

for Medical Research and the Center for Workforce Readiness to encourage Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) career pathways for Long Island freshman and sophomore students. In addition to their second-place win, the group was awarded $1,000.

The Northport Middle School auditorium was literally buzzing after school on Friday, March 9th as the room hosted the annual St. Baldrick’s head-shaving event to raise money for the fight against childhood cancer. Representatives of St. Baldrick’s Foundation were on hand to shave the heads of 14 generous students who agreed to have their heads shaved in exchange for donations. Those volunteering sat patiently in their chairs and temporarily bid their locks of hair farewell for this great cause. Northport Middle School St. Baldrick’s team captain

Mary Jean Crane took a seat at the shaving chair as well, along with a few other brave young women. Crane, along with three other dedicated participants, were officially inducted into the “St. Baldrick’s Knights of the Bald Table” for their seventh year of participation. Ironically, the nickname for all Northport Middle School athletic teams is “The Bald Eagles” and students were more than happy to assume the identity. What began as an agreement between 17 individuals at a St. Patrick’s Day party in a Manhattan pub in New

York City 18 years ago has emerged into the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which organizes and assists with head shaving events taking place during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday season. Shaving events have raised millions upon millions of dollars toward the best research practices to help find a cure for cancers affecting children. Other schools within the district schools held their own St. Baldrick’s fundraisers, including Dickinson Avenue Elementary, Bellerose Avenue Elementary, and others, and together raised over $63,000!

The Music Man For Northport High School’s spring production, the Powdered Wigs wowed the Northport community with their terrific production of Meredith Willson’s beloved classic, “The Music Man.” The musical was comprised of nearly 200 talented students in every area of theatre–actors,

dancers, musicians, stage technicians, costumers, and production assistants. Outstanding musical numbers included “Ya Got Trouble,” “Seventy-Six Trombones” and more. Although the show’s Friday opening performance was canceled due to inclement weather, students still gave three

Northport High School junior Katie Sierra was recently admitted to the prestigious 2018 Simons Summer Research Program. This program is highly competitive, accepting around 12

percent of applicants each year. Applicants include many of the best science students from all over the country. This award reflects on the quality of Ms. Sierra’s application, her strong academic record,

and the recommendations of her science research faculty advisor, Mr. Bryan Horan. “Her nomination for this fellowship is in itself an honor,” said David Storch, the district chairperson of science & technology, “and it’s an indication of her exceptional promise.” In addition, Ms. Sierra was recently notified that she scored in the top 2.5 percent of all PSAT test takers, and is moving on in the National Hispanic Recognition Program, which is run by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. For 30 years, Habitat Suffolk has empowered hundreds of families to achieve their dreams of building affordable home ownership opportunities for lower income working families on Long Island. Habitat Suffolk’s goal is to build an average of 10-12 houses annually, building for as long as needed to make sure every family in Suffolk County has a place to live and call home. In 1988, Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk formed by pulling together resources and congregants from the Mt. Sinai Congregational Church to start construction of the first Habitat affordable home in Riverhead for a single mother. Soon after, the Habitat Suffolk founders began developing relationships with municipalities, corporations, churches, schools, and individuals to form the organization as it is known today. The organization has built over 190 homes with five currently under construction in East

Campuses Awarded The Arbor Day Foundation recently recognized Suffolk County Community College's three campuses as 2017 Tree Campuses USA, a national program created in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals. Suffolk’s 192-acre Eastern

Campus, in the core of Long Island’s pristine Pine Barrens preserve was also recognized with the award in 2016. “It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized as a Tree Campus USA,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “We have beautiful campuses due to the commitment to care for and nurture the diverse collection of trees on our

campuses,” McKay said. Suffolk County Community College campuses achieved the title by meeting Tree Campus USA’s standards, including maintaining a tree advisory committee, a campus treecare plan, an Arbor Day observance and student service-learning project. There are 344 campuses across the United States with this recognition.

To celebrate a legacy of building stable foundations for families in Long Island communities Habitat Suffolk is gathering CEOs, top executives and employees to build and network for the launch of the CEO Build program. In April of 2018, these economic leaders from various industries will come together for a momentous build day where they will simultaneously raise the walls of two Bay Shore homes located on the same street. Habitat Suffolk has been able to achieve its goals of home ownership for Long Islanders thanks in large part to its partners and volunteers and Mr. John President Gary Weiner is one of the standout sponsors who will trade their business

suits for hardhats. Mr. John, a portable sanitation company, donates portable toilets as well as the service needed to keep the restrooms clean and operational for volunteers and construction staff who utilize them while working on Habitat job sites. This inkind donation has provided more than $20,000 worth of portable restrooms to Habitat projects and Mr. John has reaffirmed its commitment to provide similar support in 2018, as well as confirmed their resources for the CEO Build. Mr. John has recently made news on Long Island with its acquisition of Aparos Little John, Inc., a 30-year-old portable sanitation company based in Bay Shore, New York. Older People Improve Life For Others And Themselves (NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around. Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers. The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. The goal is to improve children’s literacy,

strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers. It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year. Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service. IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer

questions and prepare tax returns. In addition to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest, dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have less than $25,000 in annual expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits. Compassionate and friendly individuals can volunteer for the upcoming tax season. Volunteers receive training and continued support in a welcoming environment.
