College Open House Prospective and recently accepted students and their families will be welcomed by faculty, administrators and current students to Suffolk County Community College’s open house scheduled across all three of college’s campuses on Sunday, April 6th, from 1 to 3 p.m. College faculty and administrators will welcome visitors and offer detailed information
about Suffolk’s more than 70 degree and 30 certificate programs and will be joined by admissions staff to help students and parents navigate the admissions process and answer questions and financial aid representatives will provide details about the grants and loans process, as well as the many academic scholarships available at Suffolk. Veterans should
note that campus representatives will be available to provide educational and transitional services information. The Open House program at each campus will be important for recently-accepted students as well, and provide an opportunity to learn more about placement testing, academic advisement and financial aid.

In Search Of Sunsets By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There’s a saying that goes, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” The goal, as I see it, is to capture as many of these moments as possible and preserve them in your memory. For me, this process is only enhanced by my love of photography. Sure, there’s something to be said for stepping back and simply observing the events before you, minus the ever-present haze of technology and gadgets galore. However, I feel
that photos help to string together the missing pieces, forming a minidocumentary of sorts of each of our lives. One of my favorite pursuits has always been capturing the perfect sunrise or sunset, that moment when all the colors burst forth in a radiant display of supernatural glory. It is easy to miss the beauty which surrounds us on a daily basis, so caught up are we in our own virtual worlds. Around every corner, there are lines and angles and reflections of light, which produce some of the most
brilliant visuals. Flowers, butterflies, candid shots of people in their element… open your eyes and you will see photo opps everywhere. Add to that the magic of Photoshop and Instagram, and the possibilities for manipulation of an ordinary photo into a masterpiece are endless. Of course, snap a truly spectacular shot and there may be #nofilterneeded! As we gingerly take our first steps into the Spring season, take a deep breath, look around and allow yourself to be moved. And make sure you have your camera handy.

On February 26th, School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), along with Farmingdale State College, presented its annual Fred Breithut Scholarship Breakfast Fundraiser at the college’s Campus Center. The admission suggested a donation of $30 that went towards the scholarship, which was awarded to Adam Lopez, Farmingdale State College Freshman, and a graduate of Longwood High School. At the event, guests enjoyed breakfast while listening to speakers, such as Joani Madarash, Executive Director, SBPLI; Dr. Hubert Keen, President of Farmingdale State College; Dr. Henry Sikorski, Chief Development Officer, Farmingdale State College; Dr. Lorraine Greenwald, Dean of International Education and Programs,
Farmingdale State College; and Gordon Canary, District Office Manager, New York State Senator Phil Boyle’s office. When Mr. Lopez approached the podium, he expressed his gratitude for the scholarship and explained his passion for engineering and business, which led him to double major in Mechanical Engineering Technology and Business. The scholarship, which was created in 2009, in honor of Fred Breithut, Founder of SBPLI, is awarded to an incoming Farmingdale State College student who has participated in SBPLI’s FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics programs and meets the eligibility requirements for the scholarship. The student receives $1,000 for each semester he/ she attends the college
(maximum of eight semesters). Mr. Breithut sadly passed away in 2010, and it has become even more important for SBPLI to keep this scholarship intact due to his love and admiration for students. The scholarship truly represents what Mr. Breithut supported: to further the education of the youth on Long Island. “We are thrilled to award this scholarship to Adam Lopez,” says Ms. Madarash. “He has dedicated a great deal of his time to SBPLI programs and has learned so much. We are confident that he will succeed throughout his four-years at Farmingdale State College. Understanding The Circle Of Life
Last Sunday, as my family was gathering for spaghetti and meatballs, we received a phone call from my grandmother. She sounded noticeably different. We could tell that something was wrong because her voice was shaky, and she did not offer the usual pleasantries. After a few minutes of crying, she told us that her cat had passed away. She loved that cat for the twenty-something years that it was around, and during the last few days, she could sense that something was wrong. I anticipated that she would be inconsolable,
because she truly cared about her precious feline. We were devastated as well, until we got another call. It was my uncle. He had great news. His wife was pregnant and they were expecting a baby. We never expected him to have kids, even though he seemed to love them. It was a welcomed shock to us, and even more needed for my grandmother. She had lost a cat, but had also potentially gained a grandchild. It seemed as if this baby was coming to fill and exceed the gap left by the animal’s passing. Essentially, the point that I am trying to make
is that when everything seems to be going wrong, greatness fills the void. With every bad, comes some good. As was the case with my grandmother and her cat, new life is promising to replace the loss of a loved one. Even when it seems that everything is stacked against us, it is comforting to know that it will turn around. We can never dwell on the negative aspects of life, as around every corner is a surprise that has the potential to brighten our day. Life is a cycle of highs and lows, and we should always anticipate the next peak.

Each student contributed $10 to participate in the Volleyball-a-thon. Student teams creatively named themselves, dressed in matching T-shirts and took to the courts. Local businesses and parent donations provided food for the student-athletes throughout the night. Cleverly named teams battled against one another on the volleyball court for the ultimate bragging rights of Volleyball-a-thon
champs. In the end, the team that walked away with the title was War Zone, but the true champions were the students who came together and raised a total of more than $3,000 for the causes determined by the student council members. The Elwood School District thanks all who participated and donated to this wonderful event.

Volunteer Recovery Program The American Red Cross has awarded a $599,655 grant to the Health & Welfare Council of Long Island to support a disaster recovery center for nonprofits and volunteers who will help hundreds of homeowners affected by Superstorm Sandy repair their damaged homes. The funding will be used to house 150 volunteers at the new Long Island Disaster Recovery Center on the New York Institute of Technology campus in Central Islip.
Without the grant, these volunteers would not be able to access housing while they work to repair 600 Sandydamaged homes throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties over the year to come. The funding will also be used to coordinate non-profit and volunteer efforts - such as mucking, gutting and debris removal - and operate the disaster recovery and housing facility. The center will serve as the command center for rebuilding-related activities by Long Island

I applaud John Miller, Gwen O’Shea, the American Red Cross, and the Health and Welfare Council for their continued commitment to the recovery efforts of Long Islanders.” Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano said: “I commend the Red Cross for donating the funds necessary for this Disaster Recovery Center. This facility will not only serve as a command center, but will provide vital housing for 150 volunteers as they work to repair hundreds of Superstorm Sandy-damaged homes throughout our communities. I thank the Red Cross and Health & Welfare Council for their commitment to our recovery and repair efforts.” Superstorm Sandy is the largest U.S. operation by the Red Cross in more than five years, and thanks to the public’s generous support, the Red Cross has received $309 million in donations for Sandy emergency relief and recovery efforts. As of December 31, the Red Cross has spent or committed
nearly $287 million – nearly 93 percent of the donated funds. The Red Cross has also partnered with and funded numerous communitybased organizations to support the recovery of individuals and families on Long Island who were affected by Sandy. These partners include Catholic Charities USA, Community Development Corporation of Long Island, Disability Opportunity Fund, FEGS Health & Human Services, Island Harvest, Lutheran Disaster Response, National Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters, Points of Light Foundation, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, Rebuilding Together, Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Fund, United Methodist Committee on Relief, United Way of Long Island, Visiting Nurse Service of New York and World Renew. This year’s Long Island Builder’s Institute Builders Expo will truly be a home show. The show, the only expo on Long Island that attracts the pros, this year will feature some of Long Island’s biggest homebuilders who will exhibit their newest projects – both for sale and rentals. The show takes place March 26th, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Hilton Long Island, 598 Broadhollow Rd., Melville. Sponsored by the Islandia-based Long Island Builders Institute’s (LIBI), the show is open to the public and the trade. Admission is free to the show and for five public seminars. This year marks the show’s 24th year. In early March, students from Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District celebrated Anti-Violence Day, sponsored by the school’s Character Education Committee. Throughout the day, each grade level attended a special assembly during which members of the Tornadoes Listening and Caring program discussed how they could help their fellow peers if a problem arises. “We want you to know that we are here to help,” said one TLC member. The assemblies featured the winners of the school’s Have A Heart contest, which challenged students to submit a creative piece centered on that theme.

We need to take them off and open our eyes. Why does there have to be separation because people are different?” the student wrote. “Bullying is all over the country, but maybe we can be the one school that shines through and tries to make a difference.”

Healthy Living At Huntington From Sunday, March 30th, through Saturday, April 5th, Huntington Public Library’s Huntington Highlights 2014 ... Healthy Living initiative will focus on the current obesity epidemic, with events taking place at two locations: Main Building, 338 Main Street, Huntington Village AND the Station Branch, 1335 New York Avenue, Huntington Station. A study cited by the U.S. Centers for Disease Conrol and Prevention indicates that 69.2% of adults ages twenty and above are overweight, with 35.9% classified as obese. The obesity rate in children, ages 2-5 is 12.1%, ages
6-11 is 18%, and ages 1219 is 18.4%. This weeklong initiative will provide visitors of all ages with the accurate and useful information necessary for making healthy choices. Kick-off will be on Sunday, March 30th, with Dr. Dana Telem from Stony Brook School of Medicine, discussing childhood obesity and preventative measures. The week will feature interactive fitness workshops, book discussions, healthful nutrition and cooking classes, as well as additional lectures by doctors from Syosset Hospital and North Shore/LIJ Huntington Hospital. It will conclude with a
Health & Wellness Fair that is open to all on Saturday, April 5th, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Main Library Auditorium where local businesses and organization will provide free blood pressure screenings, nutritional food samples, exercise demonstrations and informational displays. Scouting For Food
A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, courteous, kind, cheerful… Boy Scouts from Troop 125 were out in force on Sunday, March 2nd, participating in national call to service through the annual food drive, Scouting for Food. Canned and boxed goods were donated by community members, as the scouts requested donations shoppers at Commack’s King Kullen (Vets Hwy) and ShopRite (Crooked Hill Rd). An impressive 2,073 pounds were collected that day, which, in addition to other food collection
efforts throughout the year, made for an annual total food collection of 3,496 pounds by the scouts. The food variety included staples such as soup, tuna, assorted canned vegetables and fruits, pasta, rice, olive oil, sauces and cereals. The peanut butter and jelly collected helped restock the shelves for the Commack United Methodist Church’s Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang, whose customary sandwich making takes place on the first Saturday of every month and is open to anyone who wishes to help the hungry in the community.

Anniversary Honored
Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and the members of the Town Council kicked off a month of activities marking the 40th anniversary of the Town’s Senior Center with some congratulatory remarks and a cake cutting on March 6th. At the ceremony in the Senior Center cafeteria, the Town Board presented a proclamation that noted, “We congratulate the Department of Human Services, its Senior Division and the devoted staff at the Center on reaching this significant milestone, which reinforces our commitment to satisfy the needs and desires of our flourishing senior community. We value our Senior Center as a vital resource in the Town and look forward to its
successful operation for years to come.” The Senior Nutrition Center first opened its doors on March 18th, 1974, with a goal of providing a nutritious meal and enjoyable activities for all Town residents over the age of 60. The Center became the focal point of an already-active array of activities for seniors, including social clubs established as far back as 1963. Expanded services and one major additional location – the Senior Beach House at Centerport Beach – have been added over the last four decades. Today, the kitchen staff at the Senior Center prepares an average of 275 meals a day. There are 13 senior clubs throughout the Town, with more than 1,600 members. Services
and programs include the Gift & Thrift Shops; the Adult Day Care Program; the Home Delivered Meal Program (which delivers approximately 90 meals a day); the Extended InHome Services for the Elderly Program; and the Residential Repair Program. The Senior Center distributes 3,600 copies a month of its newsletter, “Calling All Seniors.” The kickoff celebration was the first of a number of activities this month to mark the 40th anniversary, including a March 11th Huntington History Program with Town Clerk Jo-Ann Raia, a March 21st Senior Center Trivia Game and a March 26th disco party with a 1970s theme.

The Southold Historical Society is pleased to announce that it has received an award of excellence for its 2013 book, Murder On Long Island: A Nineteenth Century Tale Of Tragedy & Revenge. The award was made by the Greater Hudson Heritage Network, located in Elmsford, NY. The Greater Hudson Heritage Network serves member cultural organizations, their staffs, their boards and their communities in the greater Hudson Valley - Metropolitan region, offering consultations and assistance, a resource network and professional development opportunities to advance the work of historians, historic house museums, heritage centers, historic sites, archives and libraries in this National Heritage Area. The Network’s Awards for Excellence program seeks to recognize and commend exceptional efforts among GHHN members. Awards are made to projects that exemplify creativity and professional vision resulting in a contribution to the preservation and interpretation of the historic scene, material culture and diversity of the region. The book ‘Murder on Long Island’ documents the infamous murders of Mr. and Mrs. James Wickham of Cutchogue, Long Island. In 1854, James Wickham got into an argument with one of his workers, Nicholas Behan, after Behan harassed another employee who refused to marry him. Several days after Behan’s dismissal, he crept back into the house in the dead of night. With an axe, he butchered Wickham and his wife, Frances, and fled to a nearby swamp. Behan was captured, tried, convicted and, on December 15th, 1854 became one of the last people to be hanged in Suffolk County. Judie Gorenstein, copresident of League of Women Voters (LWV) of Huntington, has been selected by Suffolk Legislator Lou D’Amaro as the District 17 Woman of Distinction for 2014. In 2002, the Suffolk County Legislature passed a Resolution authorizing each County Legislator to honor a “Woman of Distinction” from their local district. Ms. Gorenstein, a Melville resident, was nominated for the 2014 award by fellow Huntington LWV volunteer Mary McLaughlin. According to Ms. McLaughlin, Ms. Gorenstein, who began volunteering at the nonpartisan LWV shortly after retiring from a twoplus decade career as a psychiatric social worker at the Sagamore Children’s Center, became president of the Huntington Chapter in 2007 and immediately took such a commanding leadership role that her
passion inspired other women in the League to also take on increasing responsibilities in various programs. Under Ms. Gorenstein’s direction, the LWV has gained even greater prominence in the local community and the Huntington Chapter has grown to nearly 100 members. Ms. Gorenstein’s leadership is further exemplified through her work with the County LWV where she serves as Voter Service Director. In this capacity she has worked cooperatively with the Suffolk County Board of Elections to conduct comprehensive reviews of voter’s election experiences. This analysis was especially critical in the County’s transition to the optical scan voting machines. Ms. Gorenstein also serves as the New York State LWV’s Director of Youth Programs and Citizen Education. Legislator D’Amaro
recognized Ms. Gorenstein on March 4th in the Legislative Auditorium at the Riverhead County Counter where they were joined by fellow LWV leaders Patricia Fuchs (Huntington CoSecretary), Nancy Marr (Suffolk County Vice President, Brookhaven President), Ms. McLaughlin (County LWV Legislative Director, Huntington member) and Joyce W. Viscomi (Huntington Treasurer). “Through her dedication, leadership and commitment to honoring the work of our sacred right to vote, Judie Gorenstein is a shining example of someone who selflessly gives back in everything she does,” said Legislator D’Amaro. “It is a privilege to name Judie Gorenstein as the 17th District Woman of Distinction. She is truly deserving of this honor.”
On Friday, March 21st, Harborfields High School’s Global Justice Club, advised by Michelle DaSilva, will host their fourth annual concert featuring 24 musical acts from students and teachers throughout the community. All money raised from the event will be donated to the Magic Penny, an organization founded by former Harborfields High School music teacher Lucy Sumner. The Magic Penny provides financial support for educational programs
in Sierra Leone, West Africa. “We use this concert to showcase the incredible amount of talent in our high school and also to raise money to build schools for children in underprivileged countries,” said Iman Lee, president of the Global Justice Club. “Our main goal as a group is to raise awareness within the community about the social injustices that exist throughout the world. I believe the concert is our way of bringing the
community together to understand and help those in need.” Money raised through past Global Justice concerts was used to build a school in Ecuador.
