The first day of spring is widely associated with a spirit of rejuvenation. But flowering plants and warming temperatures are not the only reasons to celebrate the arrival of the spring equinox. the February 11 General Meeting of the Legislature in Hauppauge joined by her father, Rocco Schiavone who serves as President of the Board of the Directors, and members of her staff. She is a graduate of Walt Whitman High School. Brittany’s Baskets of Hope fills baskets with baby essentials, handmade hats, blankets, a book titled “Babies with Down syndrome: A New Parents’ Guide” and a decorated onesie with celebratory phrases for families who have recently welcomed a baby with Down Syndrome. Her and her staff hand deliver them to local families in the tristate area and ship them for out-of-state requests. More than 900 baskets have been prepared, bringing good wishes and cheer to families across the United States, and, with a recent request from
Alaska, her baskets have now delighted families in all 50 states. In recognition of her innovative initiative and dedication, Ms. Schiavone was named a 2019 Women of Worth by L’Oréal Paris in its National campaign and recognized as one of its Top Ten Honorees from across the United States for her “outstanding work for exceptional causes.” She received thousands of public votes via the L’Oréal Paris website and was ultimately named the 2019 Women of Worth National Honoree. “Brittany Schiavone is a true inspiration. Her baskets have brought added joy to thousands of parents, siblings and other family members near and far who have welcomed a baby born with Down Syndrome into their lives,” said Legislator Donnelly. “Her dedication to helping others is unmatched and it was privilege to honor

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) is pleased to again join Long Island Cares and help it “rain food for cats and dogs” by hosting a pet food drive now through the end of May. Legislator Donnelly’s district office will serve as a drop-off location for the Ninth Legislative Pet Food Drive where much-needed pet food and supplies will be collected to benefit Baxter’s Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares (www.licares. org). In previous years, constituents of the 17th
Legislative District have generously donated to this annual drive. All donations go directly to Baxter’s Pantry. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are welcome including food for hamsters, fish, birds and ferrets. Items may be dropped off at Legislator Donnelly’s District Office, located at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9
am and 4 pm, until May 31. As per health code requirements, all pet food must be unopened and in original packaging. Pet Food Drive For Baxter’s Pet Pantry Of LI
Northport High School’s Early Childhood Education program has 16 available openings for the 2-YearOld Toddler Program for the 2020-21 school year. The district will be holding a lottery for NorthportEast Northport residents to fill these spots. Each toddler will be paired with a student from Northport’s Family and Consumer Science class, where students will be studying
toddler development twice a week. The goal of the program is to introduce the children to a classroom environment, provide opportunity for them to learn to separate from their caregivers, and interact with their peers. In order to qualify for this program, toddlers must be 2 years of age on or before Dec. 31, 2020 and families must be residents of the Northport-East Northport
School District. There is no cost for the program. For interested families, the completed Lottery Application Form is due by April 24. Continued From 5 have handled the vaccine hesitancy crisis that led to the measles outbreak in 2018, had they been New York State Department of Health officials. Their paper touched on public health outreach through the use of public speakers and celebrities, the addition of vaccine information in the education system curriculum, as well as preventative measures. The key points of their
paper were to implement laws for homeschooled students to earn a degree and the use of CRISPR technology to make vaccines that are more compliant to religious beliefs and medical exceptions. The “medical marvels” competed against students from 30 schools from Long Island to Staten Island and Queens and is the first team to win both awards, according to team advisor Dr. Arnold Kamhi. As a group, the students
will share a total of $2,100 on behalf of Northwell Health. The Medical Marvels Program was developed to encourage Long Island high school students in 9th and 10th grades to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, according to Northwell Health’s website. “I am very proud of these girls,” Dr. Kamhi said. “They worked hard on this and the hard work paid off.”

OMS Robotics Team Wins Core Values Award specific tasks. This robot is coded and run by the students as they compete against other groups’ robots. The students then use innovation to create and present a unique solution to a problem, designed to help better society. During this competition, students researched the idea of repurposing plastic to pave roads. They presented their idea to a panel of judges and answered questions about how they came to their conclusions and how this would help reduce plastic waste. The core values aspect
of the competition focuses on how well each team works together and respects others. The students demonstrated these characteristics by presenting to another panel of judges, during which they discussed what each of those concepts meant to them. The students performed exceedingly well when asked to do a team activity and, upon receiving their award, it was mentioned that each member had a “wonderful ability to be respectful, but at the same time communicate all at once.”

Matinecock District (BSA) Nurturing New Eagle Scouts On Wednesday evening, February 26th, representing more than 25 troops, more than 60 Scouts, their parents, and volunteer scouting leaders gathered at St. Anthony of Padua Church in East Northport for a 90-minute seminar on achieving Eagle Scout rank. The seminar was entitled “Life to Eagle” and was provided by the Matinecock District, Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America. Life Rank is the immediate rank before Eagle Scout rank, and most of the Scouts attending had already worked for years to achieve Life Scout rank. The seminar was led by Matinecock District Advancement Chair David Hunt, who himself is an
Eagle Scout. Assisting were Advancement Committee members, Joe Pokorny, John Napoli, and Mark Guadioso, as well as District Commissioner, George Smith. Participants were led through the Eagle Scout Service Project, a community service project that takes an average of 9 to 12 months for an Eagle Scout candidate to complete. “Nationwide, only 4% of Boy Scouts achieve the lofty rank of Eagle Scout, “ explained Mr. Hunt. “Our percentage is more than double that. Last year, 91 Scouts achieved Eagle Scout Rank in the Matinecock District, and our objective is to increase that number every year. The service projects that
they provide not only benefit our communities, but they are also a springboard for providing leadership experience to our young men, and giving them confidence in their leadership abilities.” The Matinecock District offers a District-wide Lifeto-Eagle seminar twice a year. The next seminar will be held on Tuesday, September 22th, 2020. Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America, serves over 14,000 youths -- boys and girls-- and is powered by over 4,000 adult volunteers. East-Northport MS Student To Compete In State Geobee Continued From 16 Matthew surpassed his peers to earn the title of school champion. However, this will be his first year competing in Albany as one of the top 100 ranked students in each state. Students
are selected based on their scores on an online qualifying test. State champions are then invited to compete in the national championship in Washington D.C. in May. Matthew has been
studying geography since first grade when he visited Barnes and Noble with his father and was intrigued by a bucket of world maps. Although there is not a geography club at the middle school, he said that he would
be open to starting one should there be enough student interest. In the meantime, Matthew is a member of the student council, environmental action team and will play Lurch in the school’s production of The
Addams Family March 19-21. The school’s geography bee coordinator, Chris Rozmus, explained that Matthew beat out some tough competition this year, competing against sixth and eighth graders,
to be crowned the school champion with a perfect score. “We wish him luck as he moves on to the next round in Albany,” Mr. Rozmus said. “I also look forward to seeing him compete next year as an eighth grader.”
