s a culmination to their poetry unit, students in Amy Schombs’s and Melissa Sheahan’s secondgrade classes at Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District hosted a Beatnik Café poetry slam where students read their original poems for parents, peers and administration. Prior to the event, students were educated about poetry slams in the 1960s, including attire, accessories and the traditional snaps instead of claps for applause.

Volley For A Cause More than 300 students from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School gathered on February 27th for the school’s annual Volleyball-a-thon. The event represents one of the largest high school fundraisers of the year with all proceeds going to benefiting the Tom Cutinella Scholarship Fund, American Cancer Society Relay for Life and the Sean Urda Memorial Soccer Scholarship Fund.
Each student contributed $10 to participate in the Volleyball-a-thon, which included a variety of snacks and drinks donated by parents and local business. Student teams creatively named themselves, dressed in matching T-shirts and took to the courts. Fifty-three teams battled against one another on the volleyball court for the ultimate bragging rights of Volleyball-a-thon champs. In the end, the
team that walked away with the title was “School Survival Guide,” but the true champions were the students who came together and raised a total of $3,699 for the three causes determined by the student council members. The Elwood Union Free School District thanks all who participated and donated to this wonderful event.

Seuss Celebration To celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday, students in Michelle Kasin’s PALS class at Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District created replica red and white hats
from Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat children’s book. To begin the activity, Kasin and her students read the Cat in the Hat story aloud in unison. To assist with the craft, second-grade volunteers
visited the class and helped the PALS students make their craft paper hats. “They had fun wearing their hats and pretending to be the cat in the hat,” said Kasin.

That Old Familiar Feeling By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. That’s what they say anyway. Hence, my newfound appreciation for the art of yoga. It forces you to breathe, to meditate, to clear your mind of all unwanted stresses. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat. It all started when, after 20 years of dancing, I decided that I needed something else to fill my time, to bring me back to that place where I felt like I was in shape, in control and in sync with my surroundings. After long days at work on deadline,
I settled into somewhat of a routine, using the classes to de-stress and unwind. Then came the winter, that vast, endless stretch of bitter cold, spurring the urge to hibernate until the first flowers decided to bloom. Unfortunately, stress doesn’t wait until spring, and so, come March, back to yoga I went. The first few weeks were a bit rough, what with the creaking bones and stiff muscles and, well, just a general laziness and lack of motivation. But, like magic, after getting back into a bit of a routine, there it was – that old familiar feeling of inner peace. For a few minutes anyway.
The key, I suppose, it to find a way to bottle that feeling and be able to call upon it when needed, to apply it to the world beyond my yoga mat. Perhaps that comes with practice. More practice than the once-aweek, sporadic schedule I have assembled for myself. One can only assume. One day at a time. One class at a time. One deep breath at a time. That’s all any of us can focus on in our infinite quest to find that deep, soul-searching sense of meaning to it all. No stress, no judgment, no pressure. Just you, alone with your thoughts. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat.

HOW TO BE A HERO
SUBMITTED BY: LAURA WALTERS, AGE 15 • LINDENHURST HIGH SCHOOL Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a hero? I know I have. Wouldn’t it be cool to run into a burning building to save a little baby or catch the criminal? We all know the definition of a hero: A courageous person who helps others without thinking of him or herself or the consequences that may follow. Also, everyone under the sun knows heroes are brave, selfless, caring, etc. But, have you ever thought maybe that’s just not enough? How can something so incredibly important to society have such a short definition and description? That’s because it’s wrong. A hero is an ordinary person who can and will go out of his or her way to help, care and solve people’s problems .... basically, anyone. I bet at least one, if not every teacher you had, told you to be kind to one another, and that you never know what someone else is
going through. I just never knew that person would be my best friend. She had some problems. She lives about thirty to forty-five minutes away from me. We didn’t go to the same school, nor have any mutual friends. We met through our parents. I never knew how close I could grow to someone who lived so far. We can talk for hours. Well, when talking for hours, you run out of things to say. When I asked how school was, I knew it was the worst and best thing I could ask. She admitted she constantly felt uncomfortable in school. She was jealous of all her peers’ happiness. Her parents were fighting a lot, she was bullied, and there was also the secret. This secret was one I knew for a long time and promised to keep to this day. Let’s just say it got to her. She became depressed and cut herself. I, being the friend I am, did what
I needed to do. I told. I told my mom to tell her mom to get her to a therapist. What I didn’t do is tell her secret. I never break my promises. I just told her she was getting bullied and cutting. But this, to any parent, is traumatizing. Long story short, it took three years, but I got her through it. But what does this have to do with heroes? Well, now I consider myself a hero. So does my friend. I’ll never forget the day I got the text: thanks for saving my life. Not to be selfish, but what I did took guts and time. I selflessly got my friend through, by far, the roughest time of her life. I think I am a hero. What I’m trying to say is that even the stupidest thing can keep someone from self-harm. Even the happiest of people go through depression. Please be kind to others, and be a hero by simply listening.

Author Visit On March 4th, students at Elwood Middle School had the opportunity meet and hear a presentation from New York Times bestselling author Gordon Korman. During the visit, Gordon led three 45-minute group presentations where he discussed how he wrote and published his first novel, This Can’t Be Happening at MacDonald Hall, at fourteen years old. In addition, he shared the in-depth book writing and publishing process, which
includes brainstorming, developing characters, dialogue, rewriting and revision. With more than 75 published books, Gordon credits his love for humor to be one of the greatest inspirations for his work. Following the last group presentation, a select group of students who received special admission tickets gathered in the school’s library for a meet the author and book signing session. During the session, Gordon shared
more about his experience as a writer, answered questions and autographed copies of his books. “We are so fortunate to have bestselling author Gordon Korman visit Elwood Middle School,” said Elwood Middle School library media specialists Donna Fife. “It is so inspiring to the students to meet a successful author and to hear that the writing and work they are doing right now has the potential to be long lasting and very meaningful.”

Reaching Their Goal
Magnificent Voices, a self-advocacy group at AHRC Suffolk comprised of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, made the decision to become more involved in their community by making a difference in the life of a child. What better way to do this than to partner with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Long Island (BBBSLI) for a clothing drive? BBBSLI set Magnificent Voices’ goal at 200 bags of clothing; if they reached that goal it would provide BBBSLI with the funding needed to match an “at risk” child facing adversity with a caring, screened adult mentor. The group exceeded their goal by collecting over 240 bags of clothing from all of AHRC Suffolk’s day programs across the Suffolk County, making them the first organization to reach their goal with BBBSLI for 2015. “I am happy because we are helping the community and Big Brothers Big Sisters will help children,” said Michael Kelly, Magnificent

Journey In Time Fourth-grade students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District recently experienced Journeys into American Indian Territory, an interactive educational program that brought the culture of Native American civilization to life. Students began the day of exploration by watching a video about Native Americans. Led by
program representatives, students participated in an interactive presentation that examined how the tribes’ roles were defined and what life was like for a child of the Plains Indians. Following the presentation, fourthgraders visited a museum of artifacts that included animal pelts, musical instruments, traditional clothing, athletic equipment and hunting
tools. Additionally, each student took a turn grounding corn, touring a replica longhouse and playing the games of Native American children, which encouraged teamwork and honed survival skills. “The kids love this program,” said fourthgrade teacher Joan Equale. “It’s an engaging, handson experience and they just enjoyed every minute of it.”

Residents at St. Johnland Nursing Center have begun a new season of art classes with professional watercolorist and Art League of Long Island instructor Roberta Erlagen. Classes are also held for the Alzheimer’s/ dementia residents as well as for the two adult daycare program participants. The arts play an important role in enhancing the lives of the residents. The finished projects are remarkable,
especially considering that the vast majority of the resident students have had no previous artistic training, proving the lifelong potential to learn. Much of the artwork is framed and on display in the nursing center and is often used in printed materials. Most of the resident students participate in juried art shows. Group art therapy has special benefits for dementia patients because
it stimulates brain function through social interaction, tactile and visual stimulation and fine motor skills. The colors and textures can trigger memories and emotions that initiate conversations and creativity. All the residents gain a sense of accomplishment when they have completed a piece of artwork. The art program is underwritten by a generous grant from the Faith Home Foundation.

Russo has coached Harborfields boys and girls crosscountry, winter and spring track, boys lacrosse and boys basketball. Russo received his Bachelor of Arts in political
science from Marist College and his Master of Arts in secondary education from Dowling College. In 2009, Russo earned his advanced certification in educational leadership from C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. “I am extremely excited to have the chance to work with the exceptional leadership team that is in place in the Harborfields School District,” Russo said. “I look forward to continuing to support our students, teachers and community as a whole in achieving the excellence we are all accustomed to.”

Preschoolers at The Learning Experience® (TLE®), the country’s fastest growing early learning academy for children six-weeks to five years-old, in Northport participated in the 3rd Annual Nationwide BeCause Our Hearts Beat Art Auction and helped raise awareness and $6,010 for the Make-AWish® Foundation. Elwood-John H. Glenn High School welcomed students, families and members of the community to explore diverse international cultures during an evening of food and entertainment at their annual International Night on March 4th. Coordinated by the Foreign Language Department, families and friends gathered together to enjoy a wide spread of traditional international
foods provided by high school students in foreign language classes. Along with the delicious foods and desserts, students decorated their international table with posters, flags and various artifacts. While satisfying their taste buds, guests were visually entertained with performances from talented Elwood students Jasmine Pigott and Anna Mendoza, who sang “Let it
Go” from the movie Frozen in French and Italian and a dance routine by students in the ASL class. “Students and members of the community that come to this event enjoy the food and learning about the different cultures,” Elwood-John H. Glenn High School Spanish teacher Diane Warren said. “Students are not just learning a language, they are learning a culture.”
For youngsters attending the Hatchery’s Pollywogs, a program developed for kids two to five years of age, spring this year comes to life through a series of very special events. Clocks change, snow melts, and baby chicks hatch. “During the fall the Hatchery is busy collecting trout eggs for fish reproduction and for our educational programs such as Life Cycles which school groups come here to study. This spring we decided to increase the scope and duration of this particular program by hatching
chicken eggs,” said Steven DeSimone, Hatchery Director. “Since children in the Pollywog age group are familiar with chicken eggs it makes sense to hatch baby chicks as a means to introduce preschoolers to the concept of life cycles,” said Christine DeSimone, who co-created the program with her husband, Steven. With a dozen eggs purchased at the Makinajian Farm in Huntington farm placed in a cozy incubator set up in the Hatchery’s Fairchild Building, little
Pollywogs can follow the development of the chicks by a process called candling. “By holding a light up to the egg, you see the various developmental stages of the embryo,” said Steven who is a strong advocate of learning through observation. “It takes 21 days for the chicks to hatch, after they hatch the baby chicks will remain on view for two weeks. The eggs are expected to hatch March 25th. The general public is welcome to keep track of the developmental process, along with the Pollywogs,” he said.
Slammin Second Graders As a culmination to their poetry unit, students in Amy Schombs’s and Melissa Sheahan’s secondgrade classes at Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District hosted a Beatnik Café poetry slam where students read their original poems for parents, peers and administration.
Prior to the event, students were educated about poetry slams in the 1960s including attire, accessories and the traditional snaps instead of claps for an audience applause. In the same way, Harley student poets dressed in retro attire and had the opportunity to read their poems at their
own 1960s inspired poetry slam. To conclude the poetry performance, all the poems were displayed on tables for students and their parents to enjoy. “We were so impressed with the students’ creativity that we knew we needed a creative ending to the unit,” Schombs said.

NEW UNIT UNVEILED - Staff at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center were joined by administration and physicians, community members and elected officials at the recent ribbon cutting for the Mother Baby unit. Here, mothers and newborns remain together in private rooms for the entire hospital stay. For the nearly 2,800 babies delivered a year, this approach offers several benefits, including facilitating mother-baby bonding and establishing breastfeeding.
Islanders Visit
There might have been some sad faces after a loss against the New York Rangers on Tuesday night – the final faceoff at Nassau Coliseum for both New York based National Hockey League teams – but the New York Islanders scored big smiles with patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on Wednesday afternoon as three players visited the hospital. Leaving their skates and sticks at the rink, forward Eric Boulton (#36), defensemen Matt Donovan (#46), and defenseman Brian Strait (#37) delivered tee-shirts, beach towels,
and hats to the patients and their families. Over 40 patients, along with family members, received visits from the players. The threesome walked through the entire in-patient pediatric unit and the out-pediatric hemotology/oncology clinic at Stony Brook University Cancer Center. They were able to spend some time with the kids, signing autographs, taking pictures and answering a ton of questions from their smallest fans. The visit was organized by the Child Life Program at Stony Brook Children’s and the New York

Celebrating Child Life Awareness Month, the program has been sponsoring daily activities and visits which highlight what the Child Life Specialists do every day -- provide therapeutic, educational, and recreational activities to meet the unique emotional and developmental needs of hospitalized children. These activities include medical play therapy, games, arts and crafts, as well as specialized programs such as animal assisted therapy, music therapy, and birthday and holiday parties.
Five members of the Islanders team visited the children in the various pediatric units of the Nassau University Medical Center. They were welcomed by Dr. Politi and hospital officials, who took them to the various floors
and introduced them to children in the emergency room, on the 18th floor and in the pediatric outpatient practices. The children, who are big fans of the Islanders, were thrilled to have the players visit them and bring some
cheer during their hospital stay. The players who signed autographs and gifted the children with T-shirts, blankets and Islanders cups were: Ryan Strome, Josh Bailey, Nick Leddy, Thomas Hickey and Brock Nelson.

Fundraiser Set The Southold Historical Society is pleased to announce a special fundraiser – a Chinese Auction – which will take place on Saturday, April 11th. The auction will be held at the Peconic Recreation Center, located at 970 Peconic Lane, Peconic, New York and will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Honest Abe fundraiser will benefit the conservation and preservation of the Society’s rare, Civil War “Wide Awake” parade
banner. The banner was originally created for the Mattituck “Wide Awake” Club. The “Wide Awakes” were a paramilitary campaign organization affiliated with the American Republican Party during the United States Presidential election of 1860. Local newspapers report that on the day before the election of 1860, the “Wide Awake” groups of the North Fork marched in a torchlight parade through Southold in support of Abraham
Lincoln’s election. The Mattituck Club is mentioned as marching in that parade. While the banner survived mostly intact over the years, it does require preservation work to ensure its long term survival. “Conservation is quite expensive,” stated Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Society, “but this object is so important and so rare – not another example is known from Long Island – that it merits being fully
preserved so that it can be shown to the public once more in all its glory.” At the Chinese Auction, there will be a large selection of special items, including elaborate gift baskets, fine jewelry, and art to bid on. Cathie Dunn, who volunteered to run this fundraiser for the Society, has done many other similar events in the past for other local charitable causes. “We are indebted to her for volunteering her time for this event,” stated John Barnes, chair
