It finally arrived, my very own upgraded home, complete with a filter, a light, a brand new silk plant, pretty gravel…everything a betta as particular as myself could possibly ask for! While not exactly a birthday present (I spied my Human hiding it under the Christmas tree a few months back), I had the pleasure of moving in just a couple weeks ago after my “one-year-in-the-bowl” festivities. I have to admit, I was a little apprehensive once I saw the setup; nothing like my tiny travel bowl, which was perfect for joining my Human and her family at the dining room table for dinner or on the coffee table for prime television viewing. No, this one-gallon estate is much better suited for its stationary spot on the kitchen counter – although I hear it can be unplugged and

relocated easily enough, you know, in case there happens to be anything good on Animal Planet. And my plant, I can’t say enough about its lengthy silk leaves, which create the perfect spot to curl up on and nap at any time of the day or night. No more frayed fins for this betta! This plant is smooth sailing, allowing me to flit to and fro and wedge myself in between its fronds without doing any further damage to my lovely physique. These days, the Human tends to feed me twice a day, once before she leaves for work in the morning and again when she returns home in the evening – just a few flakes each time (I do have to maintain my figure after all). I am having a bit of trouble navigating around the filter though, as it tends to blow my precious meal clear across the tank just as I have it within my grasp. What a workout!

I suppose that explains why I’ve been napping quite a bit more lately, either on my favorite leaf or wedged in the corner of my tank, face pressed against the glass, floating above the gravel. Plus, this new light is great for exploring when I’m home alone, doing my daily laps and combing the bottom for any rogue flakes that may have escaped – exhausting stuff. When the Human says “lights out,” she means it. Bedtime for Buddy! I look forward to spending the next chapter of my life in this beautiful new environment. Thanks to those readers who continue to check in on my livelihood and compliment my columns. I’ve even been told a book deal should be forthcoming! Both the Boy Scout Oath and Scout Law hold that scouts will help other people at all times and donating time to the community is integral to scouting. Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 125 attended a St. Baldrick’s Foundation event at Commack High School on March 4th. Saint Baldrick’s is a foundation devoted to raising money to support childhood cancer research. In order to raise both awareness and money for the foundation people volunteer to shave their heads in solidarity with

kids who have cancer. Eleven scouts from Commack-based Troop 125 shaved their heads and together raised $5,001, which was the goal they set out to achieve. Over the past two years, boy scouts from Troop 125 donated $10,000 to the foundation. Team Captain David Mastroianni is the youngest seven-year veteran for St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and was “knighted” at Commack High School for his service to the charity. Boy Scout Mastroianni is now known as Sir David,

King of the Bald Table. Boy Scout Troop 125 is a boy-run troop that meets every Tuesday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Commack United Methodist Church (486 Town Line Road, Commack) and is open to boys who are 11 through 18 years old and who reside in Commack, Huntington, Dix Hills, East Northport, Kings Park, Smithtown and surrounding communities. As part of their study unit on Japan, third-grade students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District held a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony in their classes. The Japanese Tea

Ceremony is a cultural event known for silence, tranquility, meditation and respect. In preparation for the ceremony, students created their own kimonos, wore slippers and sat on rolled up towels in a circle. During the event, iced

tea, candy sushi, fruit and seaweed chips were served. A Japanese woman joined the third-graders as a special guest and discussed the importance of tea ceremonies in Japanese culture.

Extended Concert Commitment The Paramount in Huntington has announced a partnership with Mike DelGuidice and Big Shot to bring a consistent schedule of live shows to Huntington in 2016 and beyond. Celebrating the music of Billy Joel; Big Shot has already performed to sold-out crowds numerous times in 2015 at The Paramount, and as a result, the venue has made a commitment to bring Big Shot back to the stage as often as schedules will allow. Confirmed for 2016, the stay of shows with Mike DelGuidice & Big Shot: Celebrating the Music of Billy Joel will play live at The Paramount Friday, April 22nd, Friday, June 24th and Saturday, August 27th with more dates to be

announced soon. All show times will be at 8:00 p.m., with doors opening at 7:00 p.m. The Paramount will announce the exact Ticketmaster on-sale and pre-sale dates / times for each of the next shows in the coming weeks. Long Island Yarn Crawl After a successful inaugural run in 2015, 12 yarn shops from Mattituck to Port Washington will be participating in the second annual Long Island Yarn Crawl from April 7th through 10th. Over the course of four days yarn crafters - knitters, crocheters, weavers and spinners - are invited to participate in this self-guided tour of our Long Island yarn shops, which will have extended hours and special activities throughout the weekend. It is a great way for crafters to explore what our local fiber community has to offer and meet other local yarn enthusiasts. Participants are invited to either pick up their Long Island Yarn Crawl Passport from a participating store or download it from the yarn crawl’s website, and have it stamped as they “crawl” from shop to shop. Crawlers who collect stamps from all 12 stores will be entered to win one of the grand prizes: a $75 gift card from each of the participating stores, or over $400 of yarn donated by gold sponsor Knitting Fever. Participants who drop off a passport with fewer than 12 stamps

will be entered to win a separate drawing. In just the past couple of years, especially, it seems, at commuter colleges, the majority of students in campus corridors seem to be staring down at their smart phones. “In the classroom, cell phones are a major distraction,” said Stoney Brooks, a professor of Computer Information Systems at Middle Tennessee State University. “Many students do not think that multitasking – checking Facebook, texting, watching a harmless YouTube video, etc. – is harmful to their learning. This is not true. Humans cannot multitask – we rapidly task-switch. And whenever we switch tasks, our brains have to refocus our processing to the new task, and we forget some of the information that we had for the first task. There are studies that show that, for example, social media use in the classroom is associated with increased stress and lower classroom performance.” Obviously, this can be a

safety concern, too, with no one actually looking up and taking in the action happening around them. But also it can be a quality-of-life concern, as students may not feel they can escape their dayto-day worries while on campus, instead managing their private lives via the device. What suffers could be the so-called “college experience,” the experts warn us. You may be missing out on enjoying your time on a real, physical campus while you tend to a virtual world. “Cell phones have a great potential for help and for harm. Sadly, the harmful effects are more prevalent than the helpful ones for today’s students, and they are cheating themselves out of the true college experience,” Brooks added. One professor told us an anecdote of another professor who gives his students allotted breaks for their cell phone use. This would be analogous to the cigarette breaks given in the 1970s and prior. The students have trouble

keeping focus if they can’t get a fix. Although quality use of the smart phone is more important than using it for fun. “What the students are reading on their phones isn’t all unimportant content,” said Steven Rothberg, president of College Recruiter, a job placement site. “With well over 90 percent using smart phones and most reading e-mails on their smart phones, students are often using their phones to search for an internship or entry-level job. That type of reading will require more focus on their phones and less on their surroundings than if they were looking at videos of cute kittens.” We decided to focus on the work of Dr. Ofir Turel, professor of information systems and decision sciences at Cal State Fullerton, for this issue. “Smart phones are like refrigerators full of surprising foods; it is very tempting for many users to get sucked into checking and updating

content,” Dr. Turel told us. “Taken together, the strong psychological rewards people receive from using applications on their cell phones, the inconvenience they feel when they do not use them, and the time it takes to do all this are reasonable possible explanations for the need to spend break time, while walking through university corridors, on the cell phone.” You have to ask yourself, is what you’re doing on social media really all that important? “The concept of a “friend” has changed, from having 10-30 friends when I grew up to having hundreds or thousands of “friends” on Facebook, some of whom you have never met,” Turel said. “Managing so many so-called friends, following their daily, and often mundane, routines and activities, is time consuming. “Overall, the balance between the positive and negative effects of cell phone really depends on the self-control of users

Ultimately, allowing the use of such sites in class assumes a certain level of maturity – students need to refrain from abusing such systems, and use these “recharging” rights wisely.” So what can be done about this problem, if anything? “First, we need to increase awareness among students regarding potential problems associated with excessive and sometimes addictive use of some technologies,” Turel said. Some universities already include a module on Internet/video gaming risks for incoming freshmen students, he noted, so adding a seminar on appropriate smart phone use would be easy. “Many causes of dropping out have to do with spending too much time on non-productive Internet activities such as playing video games,” he said. “Teachers can explain

the risks to students and discuss their cell phone and social media use policies in class.” Turel added, “Cell phones, Facebook and other technologies are like food – we need them and we do not want to avoid them. When consumed at healthy levels, for the right purpose and properly (for example, around the table and not while driving) they are very useful. However, overand improper consumption can lead to adverse consequences. We need to be better aware of these risks and teach ourselves to develop the right balance of both food consumption and technology use.” Brooks concluded, “The addiction that students have to their mobile devices has fundamentally changed the nature of interpersonal relationships and communication. The technology has allowed us to communicate and connect easier and more rapidly, but has caused even more distance between people.”

Canine Companions On November 23rd, the New York State Sons of AMVETS presented Canine Companions for Independence with a donation in the amount of $1,000 to assist in providing food and veterinary care for a future assistance dog that will be placed with a veteran with a disability. This is also the 2015-2016 NYS Sons Commander’s Project for NYS Sons Commander Patrick Mitchell. Canine Companions for Independence is a 40 year old national non-profit organization that promotes the concept of training specially bred dogs to help people with disabilities other than blindness. All Canine Companion dogs go through an intensive training process where they learn to master more than forty commands. The dogs and Veterans are matched to form a team, and together they attend a two-week training program at the Northeast Training Facility, Miller Family Campus in Medford where they learn to work together.

Bideawee Inc. announces the winners of its Love Your Pet Art Contest. Young artists from more than 30 schools throughout Long Island in grades 1-12 participated in the annual event by expressing artistic talent to convey their love for animals. Winners were selected by public vote of those who attended the Art Expo exhibition of submitted artwork held at the Bideawee Westhampton Campus from February 6th through 12th. The guide will also have real-time information on whether an activity is oversubscribed and whether there is a waiting list, as well as updates on schedule changes. “This is government of the future,” Supervisor Petrone said, “allowing residents to find necessary information and to take care of business without having to come to Town Hall. We are proud of this brochure and the way residents can access the brochure and its great features from their home computers, tablets or smart phones.” The brochure, which had been printed and distributed twice yearly, is the main source of information about

Parks and Recreation Department programs, and in years past, residents would use the information in the brochure to sign up for the programs, traditionally by coming to Town Hall. A few years ago, the Town began online registration for the activities in addition to inperson signup. This saved people the inconvenience of coming to Town Hall and, in many instances, waiting on long lines. The overwhelming majority of signups now come through the online portal, which, like the brochure, can be reached through the web address www.tohparks.com. Instead of being published twice a year, the digital guide will be updated quarterly. The Spring edition is being released today. The Summer version will follow in about six weeks.

Assemblyman Andrew Raia is reminding current and future college students that the New York Conference of Italian-American State Legislators is now accepting applications for four $2,500 scholarships. Applications are due by Monday, April 7th, and will be awarded in June at the conference’s Annual Legislative Conference Day. Awarded to four current or future college students from New York State, these scholarships will be based on student’s grade point average, interest in pursuing a higher education, involvement in the local community and individual financial need. Recognition and Awards There were 32 Scouts, Scouters, and family members in attendance at the annual Jewish Committee on Scouting of Suffolk County Council (Boy Scouts of America)’s Awards and Recognitions Breakfast on February 28th, hosted by Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge, in Hauppauge, Long Island. Bruce Streger of the SCJCOS and Chairperson of the Northeast Region JCOS gave the invocation and opening prayers. The welcome was made by JCOS Chair Barry Kopeloff and Bruce Streger and the closing prayers were given by Rabbi Rhonda Nebel of Temple Beth Chai. Keynote Speaker was JCOS Chair Barry Kopeloff, who spoke about what has been done this year and plans for the future “in SCC and the world.” He also spoke about plans to fund raise, rebuild and rededicate the Silverman Chapel at Baiting Hollow Boy Scout Camp. First Class Scout Jayson B. had been requested to create a design for this year’s annual SCJCOS Sabbath patch, which would be given to anyone in uniform that attended any Scout Sabbath in 2016. The first eleven points of the Boy Scout Law must be demonstrated in order to go from one rank to the next, including Eagle. The 12th point - “A Scout is Reverent” - can be demonstrated in a variety of ways including the earning of the religious award of the Scout’s individual faith. As with all the religious emblems, these are not an award for Scouting skills,

but rather an emblem authorized by the Boy Scouts of America to be worn on the Scout’s uniform after satisfactory completion of the necessary requirements. For the Macabee Award, working along with his parents, the 7 year-old Tiger Cub Scout and 8 year-old Wolf Cub Scout learns about Jewish names, holidays, terms, symbols and objects, community

helpers, and heroes to earn the Macabee Emblem. In observance of the 12th point of the Scout Law, Dix Hills Cub Scout Alex Grabelsky of Pack 457 (Dix Hills) was presented with the Macabee Emblem on February 28th at the Suffolk County Council’s Jewish Committee on Scouting’s annual Awards and Recognition Breakfast, held at Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge, by JCOS member Jan Rose, Religious Emblems Coordinator. Cub Scout Alex Grabelsky (who was a Wolf Cub Scout when he earned the Maccabee Emblem) was presented with a medal, certificate, a purple and silver “scouting religious emblem knot” (to be sewn onto his uniform), and a special Jewish Committee on Scouting kippah (skullcap). He had been previously recognized for his achievement at his Cub Scout Pack Night. Bear Cub Scout Alex Grabelsky is the son of Leslie and Richard Grabelsky of Dix Hills and brother to Emma Grabelsky and the grandson of Harriette and Bernard Bilawsy of North Massapequa.

Shoe Collection Attention anyone with a closet: Those shoes you no longer want or need are desperately needed to address the human tragedy of natural disasters and global poverty. Northport and East Northport Rotary Clubs are conducting their 7th Annual shoe drive March 1st through 31st, 2016. “Our goal is to collect 20,000 pairs of shoes to help the poor,” said Anita Thomas, Northport Rotarian and Soles4Souls Ambassador. Used and new shoes of any kind (yes, high heals and boots) can be dropped off at many Northport locations (see list below and posted on the Northport

Rotary website: www. northportrotary.com.) The World Bank estimates that approximately 400 million children worldwide – more than the entire U.S. population – live in pronounced poverty. Millions of these children will grow up never having had a pair of shoes, resulting in significant challenges for their health and wellbeing. Lacking proper footwear, countless children will not be able or permitted to attend school. And tens of millions of these poverty-stricken, barefoot boys and girls will be infected with soiltransmitted parasitic

diseases like hookworm, causing lasting suffering and lifelong debilitation. The shoes collected will be delivered to Soles4Souls, an international antipoverty organization that distributes new and used shoes. Their microenterprise program provides used shoes for repair to create jobs in poor countries. The organization has distributed more than 25 million shoes in well over 100 countries. “We support Soles4Souls because it is effective in distributing shoes where the need is, in the U.S. and around the world, in response to disasters

and deep poverty,” said Thomas. Among its relief programs, Soles 4 Souls distributed over 50,000 new pairs of shoes to help Philippine victims of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda). The Soles4Souls story was inspired by the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004. A group of philanthropists and shoe company executives were moved to respond to such disasters. They collected nearly one million pairs of shoes for relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina hit the next year. Soles4Souls was registered as a 501 (c) (3) organization in 2006 to extend this effort worldwide. “The simple truth is

that almost anyone with a closet has shoes they don’t wear, or an old pair that will just end up in a landfill,” said Thomas. “Give those to us, and know that you are taking a step to making the world a better place for all of us.” What you can do to help: Between March 1st and March 31st, bring your used shoes (tied or banded together) of any kind to any one of many drop-off points listed at www.northportrotary. com, including: • Gold’s Gym • Northport High School • Northport Middle

High School on Elwood Road in East Northport between the hours of 9 and 11:30 a.m. At that time, scouts and other volunteers will sort what was collected over the last few months and packaged it for

distribution to local food pantries. This is the 29th consecutive year local scouts have joined with scouts across the USA collecting non-perishable food items to share with their neighbors in need. It is one of scouting’s
