After two successful years, nine yarn shops from Mattituck to Port Washington will be participating in the third annual Long Island Yarn Crawl from March 30th through April 2nd, 2017. Over the course of four days yarn crafters - knitters, crocheters, weavers and spinners - are invited to participate in this self-guided tour of our Long Island yarn shops, which will have extended hours and special activities throughout the weekend. It is a great way for crafters to explore what our local fiber community has to offer and meet other local yarn enthusiasts. Participants are invited to either pick up their Long Island Yarn Crawl Passport from a participating store or download it from the yarn crawl’s website, and have it stamped as they “crawl” from shop to shop. Crawlers who collect stamps from all 9 stores will be entered to win amazing prizes: the grand prize, a $100 gift card from each of the participating stores; or second prize, over $400 of yarn donated by gold sponsor Knitting Fever. Participants who drop off a passport with fewer than 9 stamps will be entered to win a separate drawing. Further prizes will be announced as the yarn crawl approaches! Special edition Long Island Yarn Crawl bags can be purchased at participating shops, or are available as a free gift with a $40 minimum purchase (while supplies last). ‘Tis the time of year when all become Irish for a day, in the honorary sense anyway, and partake in the various St. Patrick’s Day celebrations held across Long Island and New York City. The funny thing is – well, perhaps more ironic than outright humorous – is that when my family and I traveled to Ireland several years ago, we were somewhat surprised to learn that those native to the Emerald Isle do not commemorate the occasion in even remotely the same manner as we do. In fact, the holiday takes on a far more religious tone, filled with pilgrimages to mountaintops to honor St. Patrick himself; a far cry from the drinking and parades which wind through most main streets on this side of the pond.
Speaking of Ireland, and travel, I certainly wish to do more of it, both here and abroad. Before our family trip, I had never been on a plane in my 30 years on this earth; nor, of course, had I bothered to apply for a passport. Old-fashioned road trips across the good old U.S. of A had never held much appeal due to my, shall we say, occasional tendency toward motion sickness during any car ride surpassing two or so hours. And so, at this point, my travels have extended ever so slightly north and south of New York, about halfway down the east coast – no further. And my passport, while it proudly sports that one stamp from Ireland, has remained packed away ever since. Unacceptable, I know. And with that, a new season is on the horizon, although whether Mother Nature will
cooperate remains to be seen. March has always been a notoriously fickle month, what with the remnants of winter storms to contend with, spring rains hovering overhead and blossoms waiting to burst forth from the trees. It is a time of beginnings, of growth, of shaking off the chill of the last several months to head out and feel the warmth of the sun as we explore the great outdoors. No need to pack a suitcase – just hop in the car and go, in any direction, and enjoy the beauty on this long island that we call home. So, as you head out in your green attire this week, take a deep breath of fresh air and start planning some fun activities to see you through to summer. Spring may be a gateway to the season of sun and surf and sand, but it is pretty spectacular in its own right. Enjoy it.

Suffolk Marathon Set track the progress of their favorite runners. The new relay race will be made up of four-member teams running the full marathon. A Freedom Fest, featuring musical entertainment, and the Taste of Long Island Festival, featuring foods, wines and beers from Long Island, will follow the start of the race. “Catholic Health Services (CHS) is proud once again to be the Medal of Honor Title Sponsor for the 3rd Annual Catholic Health Services Suffolk County Marathon and partner with Suffolk County, Hunter EMS and Progressive Emergency Physicians to provide race medicine for this landmark event,” said CHS President & CEO Alan Guerci, MD. “More importantly, CHS is proud to continue its support of Suffolk County’s veterans.” “The Suffolk County Marathon provides us with another opportunity to showcase our beautiful downtowns along the
South Shore – all in an effort to promote fitness and provide much needed funding opportunities to our local veterans,” Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay said. “Suffolk County has one of the highest veteran populations in the nation, so it’s always a pleasure to support initiatives that give back to those who have sacrificed so much to protect our country. I look forward to another successful marathon.” “The Suffolk County Marathon has been an incredible opportunity for Suffolk County and I am pleased that it will be returning for its third consecutive year. I am very proud that over the past two years we have raised a lot of money for veterans and I am excited for the chance to do so again this year,” said Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco. “Many communities in my district are along the race route, including having Patchogue Village serve as the start and finish for
the race. Among them was Matt Harbin of Kings Park, who raised $1,500 for research on Epidermolyis Bullosa, a group of inherited connective tissue diseases that cause severe blisters in the skin. Other teams raised funds for a nursing scholarship, to support organ transplant recipients and anti-drunk driving efforts. “Thank you to the Suffolk County Marathon for having such a great platform for individuals to do their part in making a difference,” Harbin said. “I look forward to participating in this year’s race as well.” “We are excited to be part of the Suffolk County Marathon 2017 kickoff,” said Dori Scofield of Paws of War, which received a
grant from the 2015 race. “The funds we received will support local veterans and dogs in training at Paws of War.” The marathon course will again begin in Patchogue Village and pass through the heart of the downtowns of Bayport, Sayville, Blue Point and Heckscher State Park, and finish back in Patchogue Village in order to provide more water and scenic views. Race organizers will work with local businesses, civic associations and chambers of commerce to organize watch parties and events along the route. “We’re really looking forward to promoting the Catholic Health Services’ 3rd Annual Suffolk County Marathon and Freedom Fest,” said Discover Long Island President & CEO, Kristen Jarnagin. “Not only does this event bring in many out-of-state visitors to enjoy all our island has to offer, but it also encourages locals to get out and experience home-grown flavors and
fare. Anytime an event can draw a crowd from both near and far, it’s a win for the region.” The race will also have a special veterans category for all active military, reserve and retired veterans. Runners who can’t make it to the race are invited to sign up as virtual run participants, eligible for t-shirts and medals. The marathon is also part of the Long Island Track & Field Grand Prix Race series. All members of LITF are eligible to participate on an individual basis and are awarded points according to how high their score is in their age group. They are also eligible to participate as part of a LITF registered team. Top finishers are awarded merchandise prizes. The half marathon is an individual race and the Marathon is a team race. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced Monday that the expanded Catholic Health Services third annual Suffolk County Marathon will take place Sunday October 29th, starting and ending in Patchogue. The marathon, half marathon, 5K and newly added marathon relay races support organizations serving veterans living in Suffolk County. The race is also a qualifier for the 2019 Boston Marathon. The 2016 race, with 2,677 registered runners, raised $140,000 for veterans’ organizations. “This event is a great opportunity to support the veterans who have sacrificed so much to our community,” the County Executive said. “Because of these races, we are able to bring a spotlight onto their contributions and raise funds that will provide services for veterans in need.” The race will also feature a GPS application that will allow people to

Wrestling to Nationals Three Elwood-John H. Glenn High School wrestlers recently earned top spots in the New York State Wrestling Tournament. Senior Damien Caffrey placed fourth at 220 lbs. in the competition, while junior
Joe Franzese placed fourth at 182 lbs. Senior Zach Ancewicz placed second at 170 lbs. Only the top 16 high school wrestlers in the state were invited to participate in the tournament. Elwood-John Glenn High
School finished ninth in the state and was one of only three schools to have three athletes place in the next tournament. The student-athletes will compete next at the National Tournament in Virginia Beach this April.

Merit Scholars
All six semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program from Harborfields High School have recently earned the title of finalist, making them another step closer to winning one of 7,500 National Merit Scholarships that the program has to offer. Seniors Greta Browne, Jacob Chalif, Ishaan Lohia, Casandra Moisanu, Mia Santomauro and 2015
early graduate Connor Stewart are now among 15,000 finalists out of the 16,000 semifinalists to advance. The students entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Qualifying Test. Each student will be evaluated based on their abilities, skills and accomplishments to receive a National Merit
Scholarship. “I feel proud to be named a National Merit Scholarship finalist along with some of my peers,” said Moisanu. “I know that we all worked hard and it’s nice to be recognized for that.” Beginning in March and continuing to mid-June, the finalists will be notified on whether or not they are a scholarship recipient.
Athletic Scholar Harborfields High School senior Falyn Dwyer was recently recognized as a News 12 Athletic Scholar based on her athletic achievement in soccer, basketball and lacrosse. This prestigious distinction is granted to only a select few student-athletes across Long Island. Dwyer was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from
the Bethpage Federal Credit Union for her achievement. She has played varsity soccer for four years and has made the playoffs every year. In basketball, she is one of the top three players in scoring, rebounding and blocks and was named an All-Division Player in lacrosse. In addition to being a
star athlete, Dwyer is a dedicated student with a 95 unweighted average. “It is incredible to watch any student participate in all three seasons and achieve academically,” said Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Human Resources Dr. Rory Manning. “Falyn is a model of that excellence that we all strive for.”

Mythology Comes to Life
As part of their Greek Mythology unit, Oldfield Middle School students in Jennifer Klein’s sixthgrade social studies class presented their Greek God projects in a show-stopping fashion to their classmates on February 28th. Each student was assigned a Greek God or Goddess to research and, with the help of their peers, was asked to make up a
dance move to represent their figure’s power. Students dressed the part in togas, wigs, fake beards and flower crowns. The assignment also involved each student bringing in a prop and poster with their research findings, including a comic strip of a myth relating to their god or goddess. The presentation, known as the “Mount
Olympus Strut,” allowed the students to perform their dance moves with the help of their group members and educate their classmates on what they learned by showing off their posters. “It was fun,” said sixthgrader Stephanie Ries. “It was funny to see everyone dressed up and dancing.”

The Northport-East Northport School District celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday during the week on March 1st with readinginspired activities and events. All six elementary schools honored the beloved author by reading different books, including
many Dr. Seuss classics. Many classes focused on Dr. Seuss’ strong rhyming ability and created their own rhyming word hats for the occasion. They also discussed Dr. Seuss’ work and his life. In addition, Northport High School Powdered Wigs students performed

a special “Seussical the Musical” show on March 3rd and 4th for families in the district and hosted a character breakfast on March 5th where children could come and meet the performers and see select performances from the show.
Begun in the mid 1980’s by the Greater Saint Louis Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Scouting for Food collects food at the community level to help those in need in those same communities. It has grown to become a nationwide phenomenon that now, almost 30 years later, collects tons of food for those in need. It is a program that epitomizes several of scouting’s core values; community service, youth leadership development and “Doing a
Good Turn Daily. Individual scout units organize their food drives, often with senior scouts doing the planning and organizing their fellow scouts. Already in progress, “Scouting For Food” collections will culminate in Suffolk County on Saturday, March 18th. On that date Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Venture Crews in Matinecock District’s will bring the food they collected to John Glenn High School in Elwood
