The signs of stress today are everywhere. One only has to travel on our roads to observe the high levels it has reached. Drivers cut you off, constantly honk their horns in a frenzy, and freely give their finger salute to all. How about our supermarkets where everyone jockeys into line at the deli counter or later at the checkout line. Sound familiar? The list could go on and on.

So how does one avoid this mayhem and still maintain a calm, controlled mindset? What I would like to share with you is a different approach to everyday life on Long Island, or anywhere else you may travel.

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent notfor-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Welcome Friends is currently in need

of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer. When Life Gives You Lemons Strange as it may seem, I still hope for the best, even though the best, like an interesting piece of mail, so rarely arrives, and even when it does it can be lost so easily. ~ Lemony Snicket ~ The above is one of my favorite quotes, penned by American author Lemony Snicket, creator of the famed “Series of Unfortunate Events” books and several other works. A bit tongue in cheek, with a dash of sarcasm, his words have always resonated with me on many levels. Mostly concerning the irony of life as a whole, they offer an undeniable degree of wisdom in between the cynical undertones. I have often been categorized as an unapologetic idealist; which is to say, optimism mixed with a touch of unrealism. Having taken to heart the expression that you can - quite literally - do anything you put your mind to, I see no valid reason why the seemingly

impossible be not, in fact, very possible with the proper balance of dedication and drive. Of course, this concept often involves multiple parties working as one, which is generally where problems come into play. Individually, we can each set our minds to particular goals and aspirations and see through the necessary steps to complete them. As a group, even a small one, it often requires a meeting of the minds, so to speak, a bit of give and take to find an acceptable middle ground. The problem with this is agreeing upon the “happy” medium. As with most favorite quotations, this particular one seems to resonate year after year, albeit applied to different circumstances; but relevant, nonetheless. As much as time marches on, just as many aspects of life remain the same. I will always feel optimism is a preferable quality to embody, farreaching as it may be. If you can’t hope for the best, then what is the

point of setting goals at all? Sure, the outcome will always be in question; but this is what makes taking calculated risks - and yes, even the occasional blind leap of faith - necessary. It may not pan out the way you desire; but, on the other end, it just might lead to something even more wonderful in the long run. Who’s to say? If life has taught any of us a fairly universal lesson, it is that there are plenty of things beyond our control, just as many things within our grasp; and, as good or bad as a situation may seem at a particular moment, it is apt to change in the blink of an eye. This is why it’s so incredibly important to hold on to the moments of peace and prosperity, fleeting as they may be, while always driving forward to overcome the obstacles which present themselves. If you run over a few lemons in the process; well, that’s what sometimes leads to the sweetest batches of lemonade.

Senior members of the Elwood community were treated to a dinner and a show by the Elwood-John H. Glenn community service club and the cast and crew of the upcoming theatre production on February 28th. Each year, community service club and theatre students collaborate to reach out to the senior community surrounding Elwood schools. Invitations were mailed, encouraging community members to come for a free meal and a private showing of the dress rehearsal of the upcoming show, The

Little Mermaid. Service club members collected food and prepared a dinner, along with coffee and dessert, to serve to the attendees. High school Principal Carisa Burzynski, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, and Board of Education Vice President James Tomeo were in attendance as well, mingling with the members of the community. “It’s important for our students to reach out to older members of the community,” said community service club adviser Maryann Cabrera.

“It helps them become good citizens and teaches them to represent their generation well.” The students served the attendees with smiles and escorted them to the auditorium to watch the performance of The Little Mermaid after dinner was over. “It’s so special to be able to contribute positively to the community,” said Ashley, a sophomore at John H. Glenn, “and by helping the community, you also kind of help yourself by becoming more aware of the situations of others.”

Seeking Donations December, is an early 20th century farmhouse that the Town purchased, renovated and redesigned to house exhibits on community history and demonstrations linked to produce grown at the adjacent community garden. Named after the family that lived in the house, raised their family there and ran a dairy on the site, the Teich Homestead currently includes its

first permanent exhibit: a recreation of the medical office of Dr. Samuel Teich, Max and Rosie’s son. Dr. Teich was a legendary community physician who delivered thousands of babies and cared for thousands of patients over a half-century of practicing medicine in Huntington Station from 1935 to 1985. It also contains the beginnings of the Huntington Station

community exhibit, which currently includes historic photographs of the community dating back to the turn of the last century and some memorabilia. “What is there now is only the start of what we hope will become a detailed look at the vibrant community that was Huntington Station in the first half of the 20th century, as well as important community institutions and events

since then,” Councilwoman Cergol said. “We invite anyone who is cleaning out their closet, basement or attic and finds a piece of Huntington Station memorabilia, or who has a photograph or relic they want to share, to donate it to the museum.” The exhibit is being curated by Toby Kissam of the Huntington Historical Society. He also recreated the Dr. Teich office on

Robotics Goes to Regionals The Harborfields High School robotics club competed in the Long Island Championship Finals on February 11th. Hydrofluoric Robotics, one of the club’s three teams comprised of experienced upperclassman, advanced to the FIRST Eastern Regional Finals. This year’s challenge required students to create

a robot that was able to build a tower of foam cubes, and could stretch out an arm to place objects on the other side of a wall. The competition was fierce, but each member was a critical part of the team’s success. This is the first time the team has been this successful since the robotics club began four years ago.

“I’m proud of their dedication,” said club advisor Michael Pinto, “and the quality of their design will help them stand up to the competition.” The team will compete against 72 other teams for the Robotics Eastern Regional Finals on March 16th-18th in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Helping Both Ends The seventh graders at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District were visited by a special organization, Paws of War, on February 16th. This organization trains dogs rescued from shelters and places them with U.S. military veterans that suffer from the

emotional effects of war, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Representatives from Paws of War shared the organization’s goal of “helping both ends of the leash,” the differences between a therapy dog and a service dog, and more. Students asked questions,

interacted with the dogs, and witnessed the unique relationships between vets and their service dogs. This event was tied into the seventh-grade class’s recent study of author Gary Paulsen’s novel “A Soldier’s Heart,” which traced the life of a fictional soldier during the Civil War.

The Child Care Council of Suffolk (CCCS) was pleased to participate in “Governor Cuomo’s Council on Women and Girls Regional Empowerment Forum,” which was held at The Tilles Center in Brookville, New York. The Forum was designed to develop an empowerment action plan and to discuss the intersectionality of the Women’s Agenda for the Long Island Region. Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul provided the keynote address in which she urged participants to get involved in the 2018 budget process and to support the effort to build on New York State’s proud legacy of leading the way to advance women’s rights by breaking down the barriers to equality. CCCS Associate Executive Director at the Child Care Council of Suffolk and a leading partner in the Long Island Pre-K Initiative Jennifer Marino Rojas participated in the Forum, which also featured Long Island thought leaders: • Financial Services Superintendent and Moderator Maria T.

Affordable, quality child care needs to be available to all working families in order to truly close the wage gap,” Rojas stated. “Furthermore, investing in child care is a critical element to helping close the gender

pay gap and empowering women. Affordable, quality child care promotes upward economic mobility and boosts women’s participation in the workforce. This benefits the entire New York State economy and helps to ensure that our future generations will have the skills they need to thrive.” Governor Cuomo’s proposed Executive Budget restores 2017's $7 million cut to child care. The Child Care Council of Suffolk is working closely with our partners around the state to urge the State Assembly and Senate to support the Governor's proposal and to add at least $26 million more for child care subsidies in the final New York State budget, which is due on April 1st, 2018. “We invite all to help us at this critical juncture to join us on the bus to Albany on March 13th, 2018, to state our case,” said Rojas. Caring For Granite Countertops (NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Women in Public Office Day As the world pauses to reflect on the contributions and accomplishments of women during this International Women’s Day, Suffolk Legislator Kara Hahn is proud to announce that the County is joining a growing number of municipalities that have designated March 19th as “Celebrating Women in Public Office Day.” The designation comes after the Legislature, on Tuesday, unanimously approved a bill sponsored by Legislator Hahn making the proclamation. That bill, which celebrates this and each successive March 19th as Celebrating Women in Public Office Day, was cosponsored by the entire 18 member legislature. “A women’s place

is everyplace and this day, while symbolic, highlights not only the accomplishments of women elected to office, but also of the increasing awareness that women can and need to be part of the change conservation,” said Legislator Hahn. “I am proud to be alive during an era when the voices of women are no longer allowed to be marginalized and am just as proud to have the support of my colleagues, regardless of sex, that understand a woman’s perspective is essential to our shared path forward.” According to Retugers University’s Center for American Women and Politics, in 2017 only 19.6% of Congressional and 25.1% of state legislative seats

were held by women and six of the fifty governors (12%) were females despite the 2016 United States Census estimating women make up 50.8% of the national population. The Suffolk County Legislature is slightly more representative of the population it serves with 1/3 of its membership being female. “It is my hope that when we honor the women elected to office, we will inspire more women and girls to want to be part of our democratic process by not only running for office, but to also be engaged in all parts of governmental administration and society,” concluded Legislator Hahn.
