n late February, 12 members of Elwood Middle School’s Student Council traveled to the Harry Chapin Food Bank in Hauppauge. The students learned how poverty is affecting families on Long Island from Christen Brown, a social worker for the food bank. Brown also shared realistic scenarios of families who are going through difficult times and rely on the Food Bank for support. Pictured are the students who participated in this informative tour.

The Huntington Arts Council, Inc. conceived of SPARKBOOM™ with twelve partners in the summer of 2012 to respond to the attrition of Long Island’s Gen Y creative population to other areas offering a richer creative environment. Go Robocats The Walt Whitman High School Robocats expanded this year to include a VEX team through a grant from the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation (REC). The foundation seeks to increase student interest and involvement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by engaging students in hands-on sustainable and affordable curriculum-

based robotics engineering programs across the U.S. and internationally. Twenty-six teams from Long Island competed for robotics honors this past Saturday at Adelphi University. Mr. Jaime Rogers, Walt Whitman science teacher, as well as South Huntington’s Teacher of the Year, wrote the grant that successfully allowed our students to compete.

In the competition, Whitman’s robot was the only robot innovative enough to do a 40” pull up while holding an atlas ball, earning the team 20 points. The Wildcat Robocats also won the VEX Design Award and made it into the final rounds of the competition that qualified the team for the state championship to be held at Adelphi University on March 8th.

WALK FOR A WISH - Students at Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District kick off their annual Walk for a Wish campaign to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

As the weather gets warmer, it is easy to let seasonal moments pass us by. For instance, the glory associated with St. John the Baptist’s High School Rowing is heightened going into spring season. Getting on the water is a long-awaited break from the monotony of winter training. Thankfully, our team is bigger and better than ever. With a handful of standouts, backed up by a strong base of rowers, SJB is certainly in the hunt for a State Championship win this year. Although we have not been the most competitive team in recent years, a newfound drive and

revamped training staff seem to be the key to a winning season. For those who don’t know, Rowing is an historic sport that tests both the mind and the body. As a four year Varsity rower, I know as well as any of my teammates just how dedicated one has to be to excel in this sport. Although I am far from elite, Rowing is becoming increasingly competitive. With an abundance of college scholarship money available for top rowers, the race for supremacy is grueling. Long workouts on the rowing machine give rowers the edge that they crave when spring season rolls around.

It is no secret that the basis for a winning team is proper training during the winter. For rowers, this season functions as the offseason. An old adage states that “races are won in the winter.” Essentially, the better prepared group will come out on top. There is no feeling comparable to passing another boat. In that moment, it becomes evident that the faster team simply wants it more. Without preparation, that win could not be possible. As we barrel into Spring, don’t let moments like this pass you by. Make the most out of the season, and life as a whole.

Girl Scout Gold

Lauren DePinter, 18, of Girl Scout Troop 1309 (East Northport) has earned her Girl Scout Gold Award, which was presented in 2013 by Sarah Moffatt, Director of Program for the Suffolk county Girl Scouts, during a special ceremony at the Suffolk County Council of the Girl Scouts of America Office in Commack. The Girl Scout Gold Award is earned annually by only 2% of Girl Scouts nationwide.

Her Take Action Project was to send supplies to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan in honor of fallen hero Cpl. Christopher G. Scherer, USMC of East Northport. Gold Award Recipient Lauren DePinter fundraised, collected supplies and shipped 79 care packages to our service men and women who are currently serving in various locations of Afghanistan. With the help of the Scherer family, Lauren supervised and led a 15 member team which included scouts, friends and family members. She also created a 5-minute video which promotes and explains the annual Christopher G. Scherer Memorial I Did the Grid 3-K Run. Explained Ms. DePinter, “There are so many items that we just take for granted that are so very

much appreciated by our military personnel and these are the things that we made sure to pack up and send overseas. I’d met and worked with the Scherer family during the I Did The Grid Run over the past few years so it was only natural that I would want to do something that would be meaningful to our friends and our community for my Girl Scout Gold Award.” Fundraising was the sale of T-shirts on the day of the race on May 25th, 2013. Lauren also got materials donated in addition to the money needed to ship items that were given to the Gold Award service project and to make additional purchases of other items. Some of the items sent included everyday personal items (soap, shampoo, razors, deodorant), as well as socks and candy. There were 12 larger parcels that

included DVD’s, batteries, head phones, games, etc. That were sent to groups of soldiers in specific platoons located throughout Afghanistan. These were able to be shared by several service members as well as the other 67 individual recipients. Lauren had worked closely with the Scherer family on the sixth annual I Did The Grid, a memorial race held in Chris’ honor every Memorial Day weekend in East Northport, as well as for more than six months with others in sorting, wrapping and packaging the parcels – which included a personalized letter to each soldier as well as a card made by local Brownie Girl Scouts. She was able to send the packages to specific individuals, whose names and addresses she received from Mr. and Mrs.

Scherer and from the VFW or American Veterans Assn. Lauren started out in Girl Scouts in the Daisy’s at age 5. From there, she went through the entire Girl Scout program, from Brownie Scout in Troop 1309, through the Girl Scout Cadets, Seniors and Ambassadors, all in Troop 1309. She has participated in marching in the Memorial Day Parades since age 5, as well as giving service to the I Did The Grid Run for the past six years. During her tenure as a member of the Girl Scouts, she earned her religious emblem the Ave Maria and was able to travel/participate in various hikes and trips like Gettysburg Historical Hike, and NYC . While in Middle School, Ms. DePinter was active in band and chorus, Soccer, tennis and softball. While

attending Northport High School, she played the clarinet in the High School Marching Band. Lauren was also a member of the High School Tour Choir where they performed at HS Ball Games, LI Ducks games, Carnegie Hall, The White House and over15 different locations throughout Spain and Portugal. She was also a member of the National Honor Society, and The National Music Honor Society. The daughter of Ed and Vivian DePinter, and older sister of Life Scout Eddie DePinter of Troop 52 (East Northport), Lauren is a Northport High School 2013 graduate where she earned a Regents with honors Diploma. Lauren is currently attending Hofstra University studying Pre-Med with a career of Dentistry in the future.

Scouting Food Collection A Scout is helpful. Scouts from the Town’s of Huntington and Smithtown will take part in the Suffolk County Council’s annual Good Turn, Scouting for Food, in the month of March. Armed with paper grocery bags donated by King Kullen Supermarkets, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers will participate in this annual effort to help replenish local food pantries. The area’s Scouts need the community’s support to help feed the hungry

people of Suffolk County. Nonperishable goods (cans and boxes) can be brought to John Glenn High School on Elwood Road, East Northport on Saturday, March 22nd starting at 9 a.m. and no later than 11:30 a.m. Scouts, Scouters, adult volunteers and members of the Huntington/ Smithtown/ Commack/Hauppaugearea communities will assist in sorting and bagging the donated food that is collected. with repairs to the Jewish Chapel at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. Keynote Speaker was JCOS Chairperson Emeritus Bruce Streger, who spoke about the chapel at Baiting Hollow Boy Scout camp, the 2013 National Scout Jamboree, the upcoming Jewish Conclave (June 6th through 8th) and the North East Regional Jewish Committee Conference on March 23rd. During special ceremonies, presentations of medals and certificates were made by JCOS Chairman Emeritus Bruce Streger and Cub Scout Religious Emblems Coordinator Jan Rose of the Jewish Committee on Scouting of Suffolk County Council to those scouts who had recently earned their recognitions. The scouts’ parents assisted in the ceremonies by pinning the emblems onto the youth’s uniforms. Presentations were the Aleph Emblem to Cub Scout Maxwell A. of Pack 120 (Port Jefferson Station) and Ner Tamid Emblem to Boy Scout Matthew Finkelstein of Smithtown of Boy Scout Troop 360 (Greenlawn). Each scout was given comic books and scouting patches to take home. All in attendance received a special JCOS Annual Awards and Recognitions Breakfast commemorative patch.

In late February, 12 members of Elwood Middle School’s student council traveled to the Harry Chapin Food Bank in Hauppauge. The students learned how poverty is affecting families on Long Island from Christen Brown, a social worker for the food bank. Brown also shared realistic scenarios of families who are going through difficult times and rely on the food bank for support. Students toured the warehouse and learned how the food bank supplies items for people

in need. The student council members learned a variety of valuable lessons, including how to create a budget and how to effectively spend money on healthy, filling food choices. According to Kristen Saidler, co-adviser to the student council with Nicole Litterello, “The students learned how expensive it is to live on Long Island and that it is not just the homeless population who are having difficulty feeding their families. It was a very valuable learning experience.”

There were 37 Scouts, Scouters and family members in attendance at the annual JCOS of Suffolk County Council’s Awards and Recognitions Breakfast on March 2nd, hosted by Temple Beth Chai located in Hauppauge. A hearty bagel, cream cheese and lox breakfast was served. They were even treated to some pickled herring. Elliot Klugman of the SCC JCOS and the National/NE Region JCOS gave the invocation, opening prayers, blessing over the bread and the closing prayer. Welcome was made by JCOS Chair Barry Kopeloff. Bruce Streger, JCOS Breakfast Chair led the participants in the opening ceremony, the singing of God Bless America, Hatikvah and introduced the distinguished guests. The blessing after the meal was given by Rabbi Rhonda Nebel of Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge, the JCOS Religious Adviser. Dirk Smith, the Suffolk County Council (BSA) Executive and CEO, addressed the attendees and praised the involvement and commitment of the Jewish Committee. In addition, JCOS member and SCC Assistant Council Commissioner Andy Calev collected funds as a Friends of Scouting donation by the Jewish Committee and to help
