Students at Elwood Middle School are taking robotics to new heights. As part of the 2019-2020 Vex IQ Challenge, “Squared Away,” students were tasked with building a robot designed to lift three plastic cubes onto raised platforms. Two teams, comprised of sixth and eighth grade Elwood Middle School students, also competed in the competition’s Teamwork Challenge, during which they worked collaboratively to score points in one of two ways: by placing 3” diameter balls inside one or more of their team’s 7” cubes, or by moving their cubes to their respective scoring zones.

New York Is Home To Historic St. Patrick’s Day Parade
by Irish soldiers serving in the British army in 1762. Back then, green attire was a symbol of Irish pride but was banned in Ireland, which was still governed by the British. However, on the streets of New York, homesick soldiers stationed in the colonies had the freedom to sing Irish songs, wear green, play the pipes to familiar tunes, and speak Gaelic. The parade was a boisterous time to celebrate Irish culture. New York City became home to a large number of Irish immigrants. As the number of Irish immigrants in New York increased, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations continued to evolve and
even spread, as immigrants started to call cities other than New York home. Today, the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the biggest parades in the world. The day begins with High Holy Mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral at 8:30 a.m. Then the parade begins along 5th Avenue, running from 44th Street to 79th Street from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The 2020 Grand Marshall is James T. Callahan, General President of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Callahan traces his lineage to County Limerick and County Kerry, and will lead the 259th anniversary of this beloved parade.

St. Patrick is a man revered in Ireland and around the world. Despite being an influential figure in the history of Ireland and Christianity, St. Patrick is a saint in name only. Millions of people around the world celebrate whom they believe to be an official saint each year on March 17. However, according to Irish Central and writer Ken Concannon, the formal canonization process in the Roman Catholic Church was not in place during its first millennium, a period of time in which Patrick
was active. The official process for canonization was not instituted until around the 12th century, long after Patrick died. St. Patrick joins two other Irish saints who were never formally canonized. The only Irish saint to be canonized is Fergal, also known as St. Virgil of Salzburg. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1233. St. Patrick became a “saint” by popular opinion. In the early years of the Church, many martyrs and those whose lives were especially holy were considered saints, even if they were not
canonized. It is probable, with the approval of a bishop, that St. Patrick was considered a saint for these reasons. The concept of St. Patrick not being an official saint adds to the mystery of the man, who was born in Britain and was said to have converted the Irish from paganism with fabled symbolism that borrowed from ancient traditions. Even if his status as saint is informal, St. Patrick certainly made his mark, with a worldrenowned celebration commemorating his achievements.

St. Patrick’s Day has become a beloved celebration in which people of Irish descent and even those with no trace of Irish blood gather to celebrate. Over the years, celebrations of St. Patrick, who was instrumental in bringing Christianity to Ireland, have evolved. Traditions now include wearing green clothing, toasting with a pint of Guinness, eating traditional Irish cuisine, and prominently displaying shamrocks. Attending St. Patrick’s Day parades also is part of the festivities. Even though St. Patrick was a missionary who visited Ireland many centuries ago, the origins of much of the revelry surrounding St. Patrick’s Day, are more recent. Historical documentation puts some of the earliest St. Patrick’s Day fanfare at various places in the United States, such as St. Augustine, Fl., Boston and New York City. In fact, New York is the site of the world’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parade. According to History. com, the first parade honoring the Catholic feast day of St. Patrick was held

During the five qualifying matches, each team competed against a team from another school to accomplish the task. In the fourth qualifying round, the two EMS teams earned a total of 60 points. Overall, the middle school’s sixth grade team tied for 20th place and the eighth grade team, after finishing ninth in the qualifying rounds, earned third place with a strong performance in the finals. The students had been building their Vex IQ robots during club meetings since October and performed spectacularly well, according to advisor Dave Trabulsi.

They have actively been serving those in need on Long Island for over 70 years!

This organization, despite their name, helps individuals with a wide range of disabilities. In fact, over 65 percent of those they serve today do not have cerebral palsy. The Butler Center’s first annual fundraiser will offer a show with three celebrity headlining comedians. SYJCC offer programs and community classes to the special needs communities 7 days per week to ages 5 through adulthood through its Butler Center. The Butler Center has been providing respite care to families of children with special needs since the early 1990’s. Since then, the Center has expanded to offer weekend programs, such as but not limited to respite programs and community classes where individuals attending can learn a variety of innovative skills. Servicing approximately 250 children and adults throughout the year, the SYJCC is a place where such children and individuals
are able to participate in multiple programs through the department. As an allinclusive environment, the SYJCC is thrilled to be hosting such an incredible event in support of the Butler Center. All-Female Student STEM Team Wins Annual Feinstein Institutes Science Competition The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research and Northwell Health’s Center for Workforce Readiness gave top honors to Elwood-John H. Glenn High School in Suffolk County as the winner of its eighth annual Medical Marvels competition. The Medical Marvels program encourages regional high school students in 9th and 10th grades to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). More than 135 students from 29 schools and three New York counties were asked to address the theme of vaccinations. Participants were required to include a technological/ engineering component, a scientific research assessment, and public policy (public health and communication) strategy in their final presentations. A panel of scientists, clinicians and health care administrators evaluated each proposal using the National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant 9-point scale scoring criteria to determine each projects’ Impact Score.
The applications were judged for qualities such as innovation, approach and significance. “Every year, we challenge Long Island’s brightest students to tackle some of the most pressing medical and scientific issues,” said Cheryl Davidson, senior director of Northwell Health’s Center for Workforce Readiness. “This unique competition opens up a free-flowing dialogue between Feinstein Institutes researchers and our nation’s future leaders in the STEM field.” Answering a hypothetical challenge, competitors had to research the vaccination debate and put themselves in the shoes of the New York State Commissioner of Education. They were asked to imagine a measles outbreak in their school districts and tasked to develop a strategy to address vaccine hesitancy and increase the immunization rate across the state. The all-female team from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School proposed developing an organization called ProVax that would
decrease vaccine hesitancy through public outreach using social media and partnering with the school system, physicians, and prominent leaders to educate the community. The proposed organization would also work to promote research and development to create genetically modified methods of immunity and utilize precise tracking and monitoring of vaccination rates. “The future health and security of the United States is in the hands of today’s STEM students,” said Kevin J. Tracey, MD, president and CEO of the Feinstein Institutes. “The Feinstein Institutes is happy to help shape young minds that one day may advance scientific achievements.” Chaminade High School students placed second while Commack High School finished third in this year’s competition. Blood Drive At St. Joseph’s Church
Northport Early Childhood Program Lottery Open Northport High School’s Early Childhood Education program has 16 available openings for the 2-Year-Old Toddler Program for the 202021 school year. The district will be holding a lottery for Northport-East Northport residents to fill these spots. Each toddler will be paired with a student from Northport’s Family and Consumer Science class, where students will be studying toddler development
twice a week. The goal of the program is to introduce the children to a classroom environment, provide opportunity for them to learn to separate from their caregivers, and interact with their peers. In order to qualify for this program, toddlers must be 2 years of age on or before Dec. 31, 2020 and families must be residents of the Northport-East Northport School District. There is no

Northport High School students recently participated in the Eastern Long Island Regional Science Olympiads competition at Hauppauge High School on Feb. 1. Following weeks of preparation and planning, and with guidance from advisors Bryan Horan, Edward Moloney and Courtney DeBrino, students earned 13th place among 52 teams in the competition. Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets, consisting of a series of 23 team events, which reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. By combining events from all disciplines, the competition encourages students to work and communicate collaboratively in active, hands-on STEM challenges. Events range from pencil and paper tests, to laboratory-based practicals, to engineering design events where students build devices, which are then evaluated during the competition. A half dozen Boy Scout Troops hosted the annual Matinecock District’s 2020 Winter Camporee at Baiting Hollow Scout Reservation over a weekend in mid-January. The Winter Camporee (formerly known as the Klondike and Polar Bear) is a winter event for Boy Scout Troops and Venturing Crews in the
district. The competition covers scout skills and scout spirit. This year’s theme was “Many Slices, One Pie” Participating as 27 different patrols from 17 Boy Scout Troops, there were three Girl units (“troop#G”) at the 2020 Polar Bear Camporee. With 265 Scouts and their scouting volunteer leaders participating, the
six event stations were hosted by Boy Scouts of Troop 539 (Kings Park), Troop 218 G (Huntington, Girl Troop), Troop 218 B (Huntington, Boy Troop), Troop 106 (Melville), Troop 125 (Commack) and Troop 360 Greenlawn). They were assisted at the campfire program and the Scout’s Own Interfaith services by

Donations to Cancer Can Rock go toward getting these musicians into a studio with professionals and producing a tangible result for them and
their families during what is otherwise an unsettling time for them. These songs have provided both pride for those who have survived and solace for those that survived them. Many family members and some of the artists have communicated that the studio time was one of the best experiences in the artist’s life. Cancer has no perks. members of the Nissequogue Chapter of the Order of the Arrow (of the Shinnecock Lodge) The Stations were a series of traditional Camporee competitions sprinkled with a few all-new “games” created by the individual host units. In addition to the main event at each station there was a secondary activity to entertain as well as instruct. On Sunday morning, following the “Scout’s Own” interfaith services, the Troops pushed their wheelmounted “Klondike” sleds in hopes of receiving the best time. These “machines” are colorful, Troop-personality vehicles that are outfitted with skis (just in case there is snow) as well as wheels. Top winner for the Sled Race were Troop 343 (Hauppauge) “Billy Goats. After the Great Sled Race, everyone gathered in the Mess Hall for presentation of ribbons to the top six Troops at each station. First place winners at each of the events were:
Crossing the Alligator Pit/ Obstacle Course - Troop 106 (Huntington Station) Minutemen Patrol and Troop 343 (Hauppauge) Cockroach Patrol, “Cross the Moat on a Boat” communications event - Troop 3 (Smithtown) Mango Patrol, Archery Troop 125 (Commack)’s Cool Dragon Patrol, Fire Building - Troop 218 (G) Grey Wolves Patrol and Troop 125 Cool Dragons, Orienteering - Troop Troop 218 (G) Grey Wolves and Troop 3 Mango Patrol, Kim’s Game/communications skills -. Troop 406 (Melville)’s Supreme Sprit Team Patrol
and Troop 3 Mango Patrol. The Overall Troop Award went to Troop 125 (Commack)’s Cool Dragon Patrol The most coveted award, the Scouting Spirit award, was not announced until the Matinecock District Commissioner’s Staff told everyone that Troop 406 of South Huntington has out done themselves once again by getting a Hat Trick. 3 years in a row that have swept the competition and going above and beyond displaying the most over top scout spirit that would make Lord Baden Powell smile.
