Holy Trinity Diocesan High School will be holding their 3rd Annual Principal’s Gala on April 16th at the beautiful Carltun at Eisenhower Park. Pat reminds anyone who asks that he grew up in Wantagh, “the Gateway to Jones Beach” and first attended St. Frances de Chantal in Wantagh. Following in the footsteps of his brothers Billy ’72 and Jimmy ’74, Patrick attended Holy Trinity and his nephew Matthew Buoneto graduated in ’01. After high school, Patrick attended Niagara University and then Mary Immaculate Seminary in Northampton, Pennsylvania interrupted for a year of Novitiate in the Germantown section

of Philadelphia. As the Seminary closed in 1990, Patrick continued his formation at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington, New York where he was awarded a Masters in Divinity. Ordained at the Shrine of the Miraculous Medal in Germantown in 1992, Fr. Pat was assigned to parochial work at Immaculate Conception Church in Germantown. After two years, he returned to Niagara University and served as Campus Minister. In 1998, Fr. Pat pursued doctoral studies in theological etherics at DePaul University and was awarded a doctorate in 2007. Fr. Pat was assigned to teaching at St. John’s University in 2003. Since 2003, he has taught

primarily moral theology courses in the university’s Department of Theology and Religious Studies and has served as the Superior of the Vincentian community at St. John’s University since 2009. For the past year, Fr. Pat has served Holy Trinity on its Principal’s Advisory Board bringing to the board his experience as a board member of Niagara University, HeartShare Inc., Vincentian Solidarity Office, and the Society of Christian Ethics. The Diocese of Rockville Centre today announced the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer of the Department of Education, Diocese of Rockville Centre (the “Education Corporation”). Mr. Christopher Marblo will assume responsibility for Catholic Elementary and High School leadership as the new CEO of the Education Corporation, which provides services, support and guidance to those schools operated in connection with the Catholic-school ministry of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Mr. Marblo brings diverse and deep

expertise in education, administration, marketing, fund raising, strategic and fiscal management, leadership, constituent relations and institutional advocacy. The new position will report to the board of the Education Corporation. Her inevitable journey to Holy Trinity came almost 30 years ago as a mid-year replacement in the English Department. Since then, Mary Ellen’s love of teaching led her to cocreate Trinity’s esteemed Writing Program. Educational Technology magazine featured the program in an article highlighting the use of computer labs in teaching the writing process. What started as an elective for eleventh graders is now home to writing courses for all grade levels. 500. It’s a pretty big number. Nearly ten years’ worth of weekly columns under the moniker “In Step,” a title suggested by my dear friend, co-worker and “agent” of sorts, since passed, Peter Schleifer. It was meant to be a take off on my - at that point - 13 years of dancing and the idea that, somehow, I could find a way to engage our weekly readership with my random ramblings and musings on life. It sounded like a pretty tall order then, and remains so, but having had a passion for writing since the days of poetry units and short story exercises in elementary school, I felt I was up for the challenge. To be given the opportunity to write for a living, to do something I loved and reach an audience… well, that’s pretty special any way you slice it.

jlynn@theneighbornewspapers.com www.facebook.com/instepwithjamie Suddenly, all those years of working on the high school newspaper, of fine tuning profiles and features in college, and even piecing together my 50-page Honors thesis, came rushing back. The topics may have been varied, the styles quite diverse, but at the root of it all was that feeling that this was something I could do. Sure, there have been weeks when coming up with an original idea, any idea, was somewhat tedious. Scanning through the archive, there have been plenty of recycled concepts, even a few exact reruns of “classics.” (Classics? Really? Who do you think you are, Ed Lowe?) But through it all, that same passion has always remained. This is why I studied journalism. This was the reason for my career choice, in spite of all those detractors who warned that

it was impossible to make a living in this field. Ultimately, though, it was exactly that “reality” that served as added inspiration for me to go after my dreams. After all, who’s to say what’s profitable, what’s a guarantee for success? And what is success, if you’re not doing something you love? Ten years. 500 columns. Such a long time; such a lofty milestone. So much has changed since July of 2005, much of which has been reflected in those columns. They serve as a public diary of sorts, documenting the highs and lows, and a showcase for my efforts to somehow encapsulate them into words. Thank you to all those readers who have supported me along the way. Here’s to more memories and milestones!

L’Damian Washington, NFL wide receiver, experienced heartbreak many times throughout his efforts to become a professional athlete. L’Damian grew up with his three other brothers, LaCourtney, Tomarious and Tobias. His parents were Sonya Washington and William Myles. L’Damian was born in May of 1991, in Shreveport, Louisiana. When L’Damian was just 6 years old, his father was murdered. Ever since, his mother took care of all four children by herself. Mrs. Washington was the biggest sports fan L’Damian knew. Her smile was the first smile he saw after every game. At age 15, L’Damian’s best friend was murdered. During that same year, Mrs. Washington had been cheering for L’Damian at his high school basketball game when she had a stroke and passed away. He quotes, “I wish I was cherishing her today instead of just her memory.”

SAHIL KAPOOR • LINDENHURST L’Damian and his brothers were automatically forced into adulthood. They decided that they would remain living together. LaCourtney, the oldest brother, took charge as head of the household. He worked as much as he had to in order to put food on the table and keep their home. L’Damian started playing football at age 9. He was passionate about playing football. He had an outstanding football season in his senior year with a 3.5 GPA. L’Damian visited Louisiana Tech and Missouri colleges. He loved everything about the University of Missouri. The support from his brothers led L’Damian to signing with Missouri. In his 2012 season, which was Missouri’s first foray into the SEC, he contributed 443 yards with 2 touchdowns. L’Damian’s career-best performance was in his senior year, with 50 receptions, 893 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns. All this time, L’Damian was devoted to keeping

HIGH SCHOOL his family together. Pro Day was his last chance to make an impression on scouts. That day, he recorded a 4.39 second 40-yard dash, which ranked among the 20 fastest receivers in the 2014 NFL draft. The Dallas Cowboys signed L’Damian as an undrafted free agent after the draft. He is currently a wide receiver on the Miami Dolphins. L’Damian sees his story as one of an unimaginable opportunity rather than heartbreak. With his determination and great attitude, L’Damian became an NFL player, but more importantly supported his family. The moral of his life story is not only to be thankful for what you have, but also to stay positive and keep moving forward. If L’Damian can overcome such difficult obstacles, you can too. He believes without these difficult experiences, he wouldn’t be the person he is today. L’Damian plans to keep working hard, learn new things, and stay true to himself.

On February 12th, the Rotary Club of The Moriches honored the members of the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws at its annual dinner at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck’s dining hall for their hard work in the raising of funds for the camp. The Squaws raised $165,000 for Camp PaQua-Tuck over the past year. The Squaws are a group of more than 30 women who meet once a month to discuss, plan, and execute

fundraisers for Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, a resident summer camp for children and young adults with special needs, in Center Moriches. They are also responsible for hosting the annual Spooky Walk at the camp. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp designed for young people ages 6-21 with special needs. Its mission is to help children and young adults achieve equality, dignity, and maximum

independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education in a summertime environment, even offering an alumni week for campers who have aged out. Art Honorees Northport High School had 68 winners during the recent Northeast Regional Scholastic Art Awards. There were many students who receive more than one honor, including some across multiple categories and levels. The seven Gold Key recipients will move onto the National Scholastic Competition.

In 2014, more than 255,000 submissions were entered. At the regional level approximately 5-7 percent of the submissions received Regional Gold Keys, 7-10 percent received Silver Keys and 10-15 percent received Honorable Mentions. Gold Key works are included in national-level judging.

Approximately 5-7 percent of these works receive national recognition. In 2014, 2,000 National Medals were awarded (Northport had three winners). The district would like to congratulate those honored on their impressive accomplishments.

people we live with right here in this community.” “Every year I come here, it gets better,” Councilman Eugene Cook said in his remarks. “Black History Month is 28 days, and we have celebrations and we enjoy, but there are 337 other days out of the year that we need to celebrate Black History, because together we can all rise and make the future better.” Town Clerk Jo-Ann Raia and Highway Superintendent Peter Gunther also addressed the audience. Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Council Members Mark Cuthbertson and Susan A. Berland were unable to attend, but sent their words of support. Also speaking was Suffolk County Legis. Dr. William Spencer, who delivered the benediction. Pastor Eddly B.Benoit of the Seventh Day Adventist Church gave the invocation.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Toulon, is the deputy commissioner for operations of the New York City Department of Correction and a former assistant deputy Suffolk County executive for public safety. In his remarks, he traced his life, which includes a long and distinguished career in criminal justice, including 22 years as a uniformed member with the Department of Correction from 1982 to 2004. During that span, he was a supervisor and instructor at the Correction Academy, the Firearms and Tactics Unit, the Emergency Service Unit and the Office of Compliance Consultants. As a Suffolk assistant deputy county executive, he oversaw eight public safety departments,

including the Suffolk County Police Department and the Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services. He also chaired the Suffolk County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, whose mandate is to enhance criminal justice policy and program decision-making by improving understanding of crime and criminal justice programming. But the underlying theme of his speech was how, through perseverance and determination, he overcame the challenges that arose after he was diagnosed with cancer, first in 1996 and again in 2003. “Life has a strange way of teaching you things you cannot learn in a classroom,” he said. After the first diagnosis, of Hodgkins lymphoma, he underwent an aggressive chemotherapy and radiation program and was able to return to work two years later. “I was given a second chance and wanted to do something with it,” he said. He started a private security consulting firm with a friend and began planning for a career after retiring from the corrections department. “But life had another lesson to teach me,” he said. In 2003, following a series of routine tests, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He survived a difficult surgery and other complications, including the need for a liver transplant and a heart issue. With support from his parents, he enrolled in college and completed his associates’, bachelor’s, masters’ and doctorate degrees. He rejoined the city department of correction last July in a newly-created post in which he serves as a senior advisor to the commissioner on all aspects of operations and system improvements and directly supervises the Department’s Correction Academy, the Intelligence Unit, the Policies and Procedures Unit, and the Office of Policy Compliance. “I stand before you 12 years later, still persevering,” he said. “More determined than ever from the most difficult, challenging time of my life.” His advice to the audience: “Never stop learning. Take breaks, but never stop learning. Try to live your life with great integrity and respect others.”

In a moving speech recounting his perseverance to defeat multiple bouts of cancer and his determination to succeed, Dr. Errol Toulon Jr. advised young people attending the Town of Huntington’s annual Black History Month Program to focus on setting goals and working to achieve them. “You are here on this earth for a purpose, to grow into a mountain, not to shrink into a grain of sand,” Dr. Toulon told an audience of about 400 at the Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School auditorium. “Put down your Xbox and Play Station and read a book. Stop texting every once in a while and actually talk to your friends and family. You are not entitled to anything because you have not worked for anything. In order to be successful, whatever your definition of successful is, you have to work toward it. You have to sacrifice. You have to push yourself.” Dr. Toulon’s stirring keynote address was one of many highlights of the February 26th program, the 28th annual one in which the Town celebrates Black History Month. From rousing renditions of the National Anthem by Leon Jamison and the Negro National Anthem by Courtney Daniels, to hand-clapping, toe-tapping songs by the Voices of Huntington choir, to the flowing dance interpretation by the Venettes Cultural workshop and poetry recitals by Crustal Cacho and Kimberley Lara, the evening provided a mix of historical perspective and cultural uplift that moved all of those who attended. The audience cheered when Councilwoman Tracey Edwards gave special recognition to the Harris family, whose patriarch, Rufus Harris, an accomplished mechanic, overcame segregation in South Carolina, moved to Huntington and founded an automobile repair shop, Rufus & Sons, which was one of the first AfricanAmerican owned businesses in Huntington. “Here are people who have paved the way for entrepreneurship, not only for people of color, but for all people in the Town of Huntington,” Councilwoman Edwards said. “It is great to look at African-American history, it is important to look at African-American history, but it is just as important for us to recognize the

Pedals For Progress Long Islanders can put their old bicycles to good use by donating them to Pedals for Progress, a program that rescues unwanted American bicycles (and sewing machines) and sends them to communities overseas. On Saturday, April 18th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., members of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island will accept donations of bicycles, sewing machines and cash for their 13th annual collection at the Massapequa Public Library, 40 Harbour Lane, Massapequa. Pedals for Progress has received, processed and donated over 143,000 bicycles, nearly 3,000 sewing machines and $10.8 million in new spare parts to partner charities in 38 developing world countries. In many countries, having a bicycle can have a critical effect on whether or not you are able to get to a job or school; it has been found that income goes up 14 percent when a family has a bicycle. For many a sewing machine means having the possibility of making a livelihood. Bette Bass who was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Peru and now lives in Massapequa, says, “The donation of one bike

or sewing machine can literally help put food on the table and smiles on the faces of a whole family.” Pedals for Progress also promotes bicycle repair businesses in the developing world. A community owned nonprofit bike store will get its first containerized cargo shipment for free (about 450 bicycles); that repair store then has to earn enough money selling the repaired bikes to pay for the next shipment. David Schwidenback, the president of Pedals for Progress, says the collection on April 18th will be sent to FIDESMA, a non-profit, nonpolitical, non-religious development foundation in Chimaltenango Guatemala. Says Schwidenback, “The Long Island Returned Peace Corps volunteers have been integral to the success of Pedals for Progress by effectively recycling the bicycles and sewing machines of Long Island. Of the many organizations that collect bicycles annually, the LIRPCV collections have consistently been the most successful. Their efforts have lifted thousands of people permanently from poverty in Central America, Africa and Eastern Europe.”

“We see this as one way to continue to contribute,” says Kathy Williams Ging. “As a volunteer in Peru I saw firsthand what a big difference having a bicycle or sewing machine can make in someone’s life.” Brian Richardson of Middle Island, who served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Korea, feels that the collection done each year by Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Longisland fit in well with the philosophy of the Peace Corps. “The Peace Corps is not about doing for people; it’s about helping people to become their own agents of change.” Bikes should be rust free. Bikes with flat tires in need of some repair are accepted. No tricycles. Sewing machines in working condition are also accepted. Each person who donates also will be asked to donate $10 per bike (taxdeductible) to help defray the cost of shipping the bicycles. WALK FOR BEAUTY DONATION - Stony Brook University Cancer Center received a donation of $50,000 yesterday, proceeds which were raised from the 21st Annual Walk for Beauty. Faces Of The Race Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced the launch of “Faces of the Race,” a campaign to highlight runners registered for the inaugural Suffolk County Marathon & Half Marathon in Support of Veterans on September 13th. “Many of these runners have compelling stories, have overcome adversity or personal challenges to compete,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said. “Some are running to honor members of the military or people lost in the September 11th terror attacks. Others are signed up for this first Suffolk marathon so they can be a part of history. We welcome everyone to join this marathon, which highlights the scenic beauty and the buzzing downtowns of Suffolk County.” The County

Executive also will run the full marathon. The “Faces of the Race” feature will appear regularly on the Suffolk Marathon website at suffolkmarathon.com and on Facebook, www. facebook.com/stevebellone Among the hundreds of registered marathoners so far are Pete Hawkins of Malverne, a wheelchair champion racer who has competed in marathons around the world, and Erin Henderson, a former Long Islander who now lives in Wyoming with her husband and 12 children. Also running are Staff Sgt. Joshua Gravett, an Army recruiter in Selden, and Joi Jackson-Perle of Wainscott, who is running in honor of Lance Cpl. Jordan Haerter from Sag Harbor, who was killed in Iraq in 2008. The races will raise funds

to expand and enhance veterans’ services in Suffolk County. It also is a last-chance qualifier for the Boston marathon. The marathon has a distinctly planned route that was designed to showcase and drive tourism toward downtowns along the Great South Bay. The race, which is a Boston Marathon qualifier, will begin and end at Heckscher State Park in East Islip with a Taste of Long Island wine and food festival to end race festivities. Suffolk County has partnered with New York State to host this inaugural event. For some race participants, the Suffolk marathon is their first full marathon, while other registrants have been competing in marathons, tough mudder races and triathlons for years.

On Saturday, March 28th, the women of the Strong Island Derby Revolution (SIDR) return to the track to kick off the 2015 season when they represent Long Island against Hartford Area Roller Derby (H.A.R.D) of Hartford, CT. At Strong Island’s home rink, World Gym Racquet & Sports Arena, located at 384 Mark Tree Road in East Setauket, SIDR invites new fans and old friends to enjoy the event and cheer the team to their first win of the season. “We have a core team of veteran skaters returning as well as a few rookies who bring fresh blood to the roster,” said Mary Moccia, aka Malocchia

In addition to hard hitting roller derby, the event features halftime entertainment, grass fed burgers and other menu items from Eat me Drink me food truck and cold craft beer provided by their new sponsor Greenport Harbor Brewery. Roller Derby Kickoff Roller derby is a family friendly spectator sport that has been enjoying tremendous popularity around the world. According to ESPN and FOX Sports roller derby is the fastest growing women’s sport with Flat Track Stats tracking 3005 teams’ worldwide.
