Long Ago & Far Away By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time continues to march on, and those moments we so casually took for granted along the way become nothing more than a distant memory, relegated to the nostalgia pile, to be savored in the imagination only. The difference, though, is that these flashbacks are increasingly from not so long ago, mere years, rather than decades… yet they seem a lifetime away, just out of reach. It’s the little things, too, the laughs shared, the stories told, the impromptu gatherings, the gifts exchanged, the memories made. Whether with family members, friends, co-workers, even the occasional stranger, every moment is part of something

larger, a curve in the path – your path – of life. Every decision made, or not made; each chance encounter or outlined goal – all leads to the point we are currently at, for better or worse. How amazing to be able to foresee the consequences of our actions; but then, our choices would be far simpler, wouldn’t they? Gone would be the mystery, the spontaneity, the happy accidents that tend to occur along the way when you simply close your eyes and just let life take you by the hand. There are those who believe in destiny; and there are those who refuse to think we don’t have as much input in our affairs as any otherworldly force. Which is right? Who’s to say. The only indisputable fact is that everything does

happen for a reason. People come into our lives, or go, as the case may be; and we are better for it. Every chance meeting is a lesson in disguise, to be determined at a later date. In the meantime, we go on, as does time. Our world grows smaller as circumstances change our daily dynamics, and we are forced to adjust, whether we care to or not. The memories fade, and their significance wanes in the face of more urgent, pressing matters. But we should never forget… the people, the places, the roads taken – all have led to here and now. And one day, not so very far away, this, too, will be but a snapshot in the giant album of life. We had best preserve it from now.

Led by representatives from the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory DNA Learning Center, seventhgrade students at Elwood Middle School discovered how scientists create DNA fingerprints through a hands-on forensic experiment.

For the lesson, students were given a fictitious scenario and DNA samples to solve a crime. Seventhgraders were tasked with analyzing DNA evidence from the crime scene and the DNA of three suspects. To solve the crime, students used specialize

tools including micropipettes and agarose gel to transfer and examine the samples. Using the process of gel electrophoresis, students identified that the DNA of two suspects matched DNA found at the crime scene.

During their AP environmental class, students at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School in the Elwood Union Free School District participated in a citric acid remediation lab experiment led by representatives from the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Prior to the visit,

scientists at the Brookhaven National Laboratory separated the metal in soil samples by washing it with citric acid. For the class lesson, representatives brought the citric acid and metal mixed solution. Students were instructed to follow the scientific steps to quantify the amount of iron

present in the soil, using the 1,10-phenanthroline method. After completing the final step in the procedure, students measured the absorbance of the liquid using a spectrophotometer and determined the concentration of iron in the soil sample.

Snappy Performance To show off their writing skills and creativity, second-grade classes at Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District hosted a 1960’s inspired poetry slam, where students read their original poems for parents, peers and administrators. To begin the monthlong study unit, students were encouraged to look at ordinary objects in

interesting ways using “poet’s eyes.” Students learned and wrote different types of poems such as list, story, personification and conversation poems. After revising and editing their poems, teachers helped the students select the poem they wanted to share at the poetry slam. Dressed in fun accessories, students took to the stage to read their poems for the audience.

Environmental Experiments

Following each reading, audience members snapped their fingers to applaud the student. All poems were later displayed on tables for attendees to enjoy and write comments about what they liked about the poem. “We are proud of the hard work they put into this special occasion,” said English as a New Language teacher Danielle Sullivan.

Awards of Excellence The Art League of Long Island’s ninth annual “Go APE” Advanced Placement Student Exhibition features 2-D and 3-D works by 122 students from 37 Long Island High Schools. This is an opportunity for what may be the first of many times these promising young art students will show their work in a professional gallery setting. The exhibit is on view in the League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery through March 13th. An artists’ reception and awards presentation take place Sunday, March 13th, from 1 to 3 p.m. Charlee Miller, Executive Director of the Art League of Long Island, selected the 20 students to receive awards for their outstanding work. Ms. Miller explains of the selection process: “The Go Ape show is always very exciting. The talent and promise of so many of the young artists made it very difficult to select one piece of artwork over another. award, a student must be attending a New York State high school and be ranked in the top ten percent of his/her graduating class and enroll in full-time study at a SUNY in the fall term following high school graduation. HSEC SUNY STEM Scholarship Award Eligibility An applicant must: • be a legal resident of NYS and have resided in NYS for 12 continuous months; • be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen;

• be a high school senior/ recent high school graduate who will be enrolled full time at a SUNY or CUNY college, including community colleges and the statutory colleges at Cornell University and Alfred University, beginning in the fall term following his or her high school graduation; • be ranked in the top 10 percent of his/her high school graduating class of a NYS high school; • be matriculated in
