Railroad and other important topics related to the civil rights era. Music was provided by the Harborfields High School Jazz Band, led by Musical Director Dan Bilawsky, and the Oldfield Middle School Chorus. Visitors were also graced with performances by the Oldfield Middle School Orchestra and other unique performances pertaining to the night’s theme. Suffolk County Legislator Dr. William Spencer delivered the night’s keynote address. “Tonight is a true representation for me that this is what Harborfields is all about,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Francesco Ianni said. “Tonight is a real treat, and we are very proud of our talented students.”

Harborfields Central School District Board of Education members, district administrators, staff and community members packed into the Oldfield Middle School auditorium on February 16th, as students throughout the district paid homage to Black History Month. I remember the day like it was yesterday… which is fairly impressive, considering it was actually 17 years ago, to the day in fact. This momentous occasion of which I speak, on March 8th, 2000, was the date I was told by our high school principal that I was, in fact, “officially” the valedictorian of our senior class. I can’t say the news was a complete shock, as we had all been given informal ranks pending the start of the college application process several months prior. At the time, my guidance counselor had informed my parents and I that all paperwork sent out from the administrative offices would name me as “approximately” first, a fact that I had never even thought to consider up until that very moment. I had always enjoyed school and had accumulated a collection of Honors and Advanced Placement classes

on my transcript by my senior year; but class rank was not something I had ever particularly focused my attention on. I knew it existed, obviously; but most colleges were more concerned with your overall GPA and SAT scores, not your comparison among a class of your peers. As I rounded the corner on that afternoon, en route to our “rotunda” outside the cafeteria, I was startled to find the principal seated there next to one of my friends. “Oh good, you’re here,” he said. Uh oh, I thought. My mind raced, trying to determine what I could have done to warrant this unexpected visit. Next to him, my friend had a sly smile on his face. What is this about? I couldn’t imagine. “I have some news,” he grinned, standing up and extending his hand in congratulations. “It’s official – you’re number one.” And there it was. Twelve years of hard work and

Councilwoman Susan A. Berland presented a Town of Huntington Proclamation to Joel Grey after a sold-out showing of “Cabaret” and Q & A at the Cinema Arts Centre. He also signed copies of his revealing memoir “Master of Ceremonies” which recounted his fascinating and complex behind-thestage life story, acting career, family and love life.

Joel Grey was recognized for his seven-decade long entertainment career as one of the most respected and successful actors, singers, dancers, producers, directors and photographers. He starred in over a dozen landmark Broadway productions, more than twenty films and countless hit television shows. “It was an honor to

present a proclamation to Joel Grey for his career as one of the most renowned American entertainers,” said Councilwoman Susan A. Berland. “I want to thank him for appearing at the Cinema Arts Centre, featuring the film “Cabaret,” participating in a revealing Q & A and signing copies of his memoir “Master of Ceremonies.”

Each year, only 161 students are named Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students. If chosen, Browne will receive an all expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. in June where she will be awarded

with a U.S. Presidential Scholars medallion during a ceremony sponsored by the White House and have the opportunity to hear from important figures such as government officials, educators, authors, musicians, artists and more. “It is amazing,” she said. “To have all my hard work pay off for the ACT and be recognized for this program is such an honor.” In addition to being a strong student, Browne is heavily involved at Harborfields High School. She is the president of French Club, part of the school’s mock trial team and a member of the school’s Honor Society, Art Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society. She was also recently named a 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program finalist. Although not certain as to where she plans to attend college, Browne has been accepted to Yale University and is interested in studying topics such as linguistics and science.

Four AP Art students from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School proudly showed off their artwork at the Go APE AP Student Art Exhibit on February 12th in the Art League of Long Island’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery. Juniors Payton Alibrandi, Alexandra Sachelari, Ruth Yi and senior Rachel Zimmerman’s work was selected for the exhibit by

their art teachers. For the past 10 years, the exhibit has celebrated the excellent work of AP art students from across Long Island. The Elwood students worked on creating pieces to build their AP art portfolio since the beginning of the year and spent countless hours into crafting their artwork. “As a teacher, it always feels incredible to have

my students work shown off; I feel like a proud parent,” said AP art teacher Amy Lindenbaum. “Work looks very different on a table in the art room to being framed on a wall in a gallery space. I loved watching them get to show off as family, friends, and gallery goers came to check out their art.”

Anti-Violence Week As part of Anti-Violence Week, Oldfield Middle School students discussed stereotyping with the help of members from the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County on February 14th. Speaker Tracy GarrisonFeinberg and Paula Jasser led three grade level assemblies which enabled students to think about others and examine acceptance throughout history.

Garrison-Feinberg spoke to students about the results of stereotyping and asked for volunteers to give their own example of a stereotype that society holds today. The assembly also focused on the meaning of certain symbols and how history can play a large part in what they represent. The presentations were just one component of Anti-Violence week for the school. Classes also

participated throughout the week in activities that focused on respecting, accepting and showing kindness towards others. Students were given the tools that they need to make the right choices. “We look to promote a culture of acceptance,” said Assistant Principal Joseph Castoro. “We want students to know that our school is a safe place.”

Members of the Northport High School Tour Choir had the exciting opportunity to perform with broadway legend and hometown star Patti LuPone on January 23rd and 24th. The event also served as a fundraiser for the Northport High School Performing Arts department, in which $35,000 was raised. Students sang in front

of the sold out crowds with the two-time Tony Award winner and Grammy Award winner at the John W. Engeman Theater during the second half of the performance of “Don’t Monkey with Broadway.” The two performances would be a cherished memory for the members of the Northport High School Tour Choir. “It was an unforgettable

experience singing with a Broadway legend,” said senior Jake Greene. “She was fantastic with us. We’re glad we made Northport proud!” “Performing with Patti LuPone was such an eye opening experience into the world of theatre, and I will never forget it,” added junior Mark Scalia.

Dickinson Avenue Elementary School students recently gave back to those in need by taking part in the Dickinson Avenue PTA’s Annual Winter Food Drive. The school donated 60 bags of nonperishable food items to the Northport Food Pantry. The PTA has run the Winter Food Drive at the school for the past 10

years and it is one of three collections that the PTA conducts each school year. During the course of a week, students lent a helping hand by donating food items for their community members in need. A flyer was sent home with suggestions of items that the Northport Food Pantry particularly needed and a shopping cart was placed by the entrance

of the school for students to drop off their items. Dickinson Avenue PTA secretary Jayne Conwell was a key organizer in making the food drive a success. “We want to show children of elementary age that they can help out,” she said. “They are really excited to give back to the community.”

The siblings were notified in the fall that they were among 16,000 Semifinalists out of the 1.6 million students who took the test. David and Michael earned their finalist designation by submitting a scholarship application consisting of their academic record, extracurricular activities, leadership abilities, employment and awards. Both students had to obtain an excellent academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and

recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT scores that confirmed their earlier performance on the qualifying test. “It is a tremendous accolade to be ranked among the highest performing students in the state,” said Principal Carisa Burzynski. “As students who received this distinction at John H. Glenn High School, you make us incredibly proud. Congratulations on this well-deserved accomplishment.”

The Harborfields Central School District is pleased to announce that physical education teacher Christine Collins has recently been inducted into the Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Collins was nominated by the board of the LIMLF and voted on by the general membership of LIMLF. Currently a teacher at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School, Collins has been a valued member of the Harborfields community since 2003 and has coached lacrosse in the district for 10 years. She is currently taking a break to enjoy motherhood and

coach her three daughters. As an avid lacrosse player, Collins has played since she was in fourthgrade. She was named an “All Everything” player for Dalers at Farmingdale High School and received the title of “All-American” in college while playing lacrosse for the Tar Heels in North Carolina. Being inducted into the Hall of Fame was an honor for Collins. “In my career I was fortunate to be coached by some incredible people and have played with some of the best around,” she said. “My induction is a reflection of my former teammates and coaches.”

The NorthportEast Northport Fine and Performing Arts Department is pleased to announce that Northport High School Choral Directors Ellen McCarthy and Nicholas Hart were inducted into the Four Chaplains Legion of Honor on February 5th at the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center in the Little White Chapel. Both were selected based on their efforts in bettering the community. The Northport VAMC has been selecting members into this Legion of Honor for 32 of the last 34 years. The basis of the Chapel of

Four Chaplains and the Legion of Honor dates back to when Harry Truman was president of the United States and was present at the first opening of the Chapel of Four Chaplains in Philadelphia. The Chapel created the Legion of Honor to recognize those who through selfless acts make communities better. “Words cannot fully convey what my heart feels about Ms. McCarthy and Mr. Hart and the wonderful contributions they and their enormously talented Northport High School Tour Choir members have made toward the healing,

happiness and tribute of countless veterans,” said Northport VA Public Affairs Officer Joseph Sledge. The district is proud to have both McCarthy and Hart as part of the Northport-East Northport family. “Congratulations to Ms. Ellen McCarthy and Mr. Nicholas Hart for receiving this distinction this year as, over the years, they have tirelessly dedicated their love of music making with their student groups to perform for our veterans,” said Director of Fine and Performing Arts Izzet Mergen.

Local Artist Honored Patricia Shih, firsttime filmmaker from Huntington, has been nominated for two prestigious awards by the Queens World Film Festival: “Best Documentary Feature” and “Best Director Documentary Feature” for her film “Undocumented.” Many Long Islanders know her as an award-winning singer-songwriter and one of the best-known family music artists for over 30 years. The film has been accepted into this top film

festival, a true honor for a first-time filmmaker. The documentary is based on the autobiography of another resident of Huntington, Dr. Harold Fernandez, Director of Cardio and Thoracic Surgery at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore. He is one of the leading cardiac surgeons in the New York Metro area. Dr. Fernandez was born and raised in what was once called The Murder Capital of the World, Medellin,

Colombia. When he was a young child his parents emigrated to the United States and landed in New Jersey. They worked long hours for meager wages to earn enough money to bring their sons from the dangerous barrio in Colombia to the safety of the United States. When Harold was only 13 years old he and his 11 year-old brother made the harrowing journey to the U.S. with 11 adult strangers in a small boat through the Bermuda

Triangle during hurricane season. Although they survived the treacherous trip, their struggles were just beginning. The family lived “in the shadows” as undocumented immigrants. The film recounts Dr. Fernandez’s story from hopeless child of poverty to top student at renowned Princeton University, where a compassionate professor and powerful president helped him and his family become legal citizens. He then went to Harvard

Medical School and has since become a top surgeon, saving countless lives. Patricia, Executive Producer and Director, along with her Associate Producer Huntingtonian Greg Blank, captured the essence of Dr. Fernandez’s immigration story and finished the film in an unimaginable 5 months. They premiered the film at the Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington at two soldout shows and received a standing ovation at each

Prestigious Grant Awarded Long Island University’s prestigious Palmer School of Library and Information Sciences has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation to preserve documents that are a vital part of Long Island’s history. The Palmer School is a recognized leader in library science and one of just 62 schools accredited by the American Library Association. It also offers the only Ph.D. program in Information Studies in the New York metropolitan area and is the only library sciences school in that area to be admitted into membership in the prestigious iSchools Consortium. “Long Island University is proud to partner our nationally recognized Palmer School with the resources of the Robert David Lion Gardner Foundation to help preserve Long Island’s history,” said LIU President Dr. Kimberly R. Cline. With the Gardiner Foundation’s grant, LIU will digitize and preserve a collection of historical

documents currently held by historical societies across Long Island, with a particular emphasis on Suffolk County. LIU will showcase these documents at an annual Gardiner Symposium, while promoting year-round visibility of these historical societies. The project will be led by Dr. Gregory Hunter, Professor of Library and Information Science who heads the doctoral program at the Palmer School. Dr. Hunter is a nationally recognized expert who was a key member of the team that designed and implemented the Electronic Records Archives for the National Archives and Records Administration. Dr. Hunter is Editor of The American Archivist, the peer-reviewed journal of the Society of American Archivists. “The Palmer School has been educating archivists and supporting the local historical community for three decades,” said Dr. Hunter. “The generous grant from the Gardiner

Foundation will help preserve Long Island’s history and also ensure that the next generation of archival professionals has the skills to preserve history in the digital age.” The grant includes significant scholarship support for masters and Ph.D. students at the Palmer School, in addition to opportunities for longterm fieldwork placement that benefit both the historical societies and Palmer School students. “The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation’s mission is to promote our regional history. The artifacts and archives of historical societies are untapped treasure troves for researchers and scholars. It is our hope that this award will make these collections available as vital part of local historic study. The Palmer School program and students offer the expertise and resources to accomplish this goal,” said Kathryn M. Curran, Executive Director of the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation.

Ferrous Equinous, the sculpture of a horse that has graced Fair Meadow Park since 2010, finally has some company. Two works by Fort Salonga sculptor David Haussler – Fan Fare and Water Twist – were recently installed at the park, located at the intersection of Park Avenue and Pulaski Road. Haussler, who has been facing recent serious health issues, donated the two works to the Town as a gift to the community. Both are welded steel sculptures. Fan Fare is evocative of windmills that dot the landscape in the rural Midwest. Similarly, Water Twist recalls tornadoes traveling across the Great Plains. “Over his distinguished career, David Haussler has contributed much to art and art education in our community and to
