deceased donor. • Living donation does not change life expectancy, and after recovery from the surgery, most donors go on to live happy, healthy and normal lives. • The cost of the living donor’s evaluation, testing and surgery are generally paid for by the recipient’s Medicare or private health insurance. • The usual recovery time after the surgery is short, and donors can generally resume their normal home and working lives within two to six weeks. • The number of living organ donors is more than 6,000 per year - and one in four of these donors isn’t biologically related to the recipient. • A kidney from a living donor usually functions immediately, making it easier to monitor. Some deceased donor kidneys do not function immediately, and as a result, the patient

may require dialysis until the kidney starts to function. • Nearly 100,000 people are currently waiting for a kidney. • 4,903 people died in 2012 waiting for a kidney. • 3,000 people are added to the waiting list for a kidney each month. • Depending on where you live, the wait for a deceased kidney can be anywhere from 3 to 10 YEARS!!! Matthew Botchler is 34 years old and is going through Stage 4 kidney failure. He is in dire need of a transplant. Since his blood type is O+, he is considered a universal donor, and unfortunately not a universal recipient. Potential donors must be blood type O+/ O-, generally healthy (DOES NOT smoke, drink excessively, DOES NOT have diabetes, or cardiac issues, and has two healthy kidneys) and must be between the ages

of 18 to 40. On August 7th, 2013, Matthew heard the four most devastating words of his life: “Your kidneys are failing.” On December 26th, 2013, Matthew received a phone call from the Kidney Transplant team stating that he had been placed on the “Status 7” transplant list. This is only a small step in his long journey, as the “Status 7” list means that he must find his own living kidney donor. A living donation is extremely important because a kidney from a living donor lasts about twice as long as one from a deceased donor. In addition, the waiting period for a deceased donor’s kidney is approximately 7 to 9 years in New York State. This is an extremely long time, especially since Matthew is expected to keep the nephrostomy tubes until his kidney transplant surgery. Every two to three

months, Matthew must go through a painful medical procedure to have these tubes replaced to avoid infection and to maintain kidney stability. Boy Scout Gareth Schaefer was charged with the rank of Eagle Scout at his Court of Honor at St. Anthony of Padua Church on January 17th, becoming the 74th Eagle Scout from Troop 52 in East Northport. In order to reach the highest rank in the Boy Scout movement, that of Eagle Scout, a young man must earn 21 merit badges (11 of which are required) as well as plan and execute a community service project prior to his 18th birthday. In addition, the Eagle candidate must fundraise for money to cover the expenses of the project. Eagle Scout Schaefer held a bake sale at St. Anthony of Padua R.C.C., earning $804.07 to fund the purchase of the materials needed to complete his project (furniture grade plywood, lumber, fasteners, stain, etc). The excess $200 that was not needed for the materials was donated to the food pantry to help replenish their supplies. The project took 185 hours from initial design to installation. Gareth led 14 scouts and adults in designing, fabricating, assembling, staining and installing storage bins, counters and two storage shelves at the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. Scout Schaefer’s Eagle Scout Community Service Project benefits the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry at St. Anthony’s Parish Outreach. The project involved a set of 10-foot long shelves, with a 10-foot by 22-inch counter top and four storage bins on wheels which all fit

under the counter. All of the parts of the newly installed counters and bins were made from wood and followed the plans that the Eagle Candidate created from scratch using Autodesk CAD software. The shelves and counter top help with the organization and storage of food donations, and the bins facilitate moving the donations into the pantry – saving the pantry volunteers from having to lift and move heavy bags of canned goods. He was assisted in this leadership

project by six Boy Scouts of Troop 52 (East Northport), three Scouts of Troop 410 (Northport), and five family members. Eagle Scout Gareth Schaefer, a senior and honors student at Northport High School, plays clarinet in the Tiger Marching Band and bass clarinet in the Symphonic Winds, is a cross-country/winter/ spring track team member, a member of the National Honor Society and is the team captain for the new Northport Tigers Robotics. An Altar Server Team Captain at St. Anthony of Padua Church in East Northport, he volunteers at the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, and works as a Sacristan at St. Anthony’s. The East Northport’s Second Avenue resident, son of Robert and Jackie (Jacquelyn) Schaefer and younger brother to Christopher Schaefer, Eagle Scout Schaefer plans to study mechanical engineering in college

Suffolk County Community College head baseball Coach Eric Brown of Coram has been inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, College Athletic Director Kevin Foley announced recently. The NJCAA made the formal announcement February 3rd. Brown will be honored at a pretournament banquet at the 2014 NJCAA Division I Baseball World Series on May 23rd in Grand Junction, Colorado. Coach Brown, Foley said, is the longest tenured coach of any athletic program at Suffolk County Community College and has led the Sharks for 25 years, amassing an overall record of 587-3227. Coach Brown has led Suffolk to five appearances in the NJCAA Division III World Series (1998, 1999, 2000, 2006, and 2011) and is a five-time recipient of the Region 15 / District F Coach of the Year Award. “Coach Brown is an exceptional leader who sets a high bar for our student athletes not only on the field, but in the players’ everyday lives. He is a credit to our College, and I am proud to say congratulations to him on behalf of our entire College community,” said Suffolk County Community President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “This is a fitting acknowledgement of the outstanding record that Coach Brown has achieved as head baseball coach at Suffolk County Community College. His contribution to the College and the young men who have played for him is legendary. He is an example of how one person can make a difference in so many people’s lives. The homeless are at an exponential disadvantage when it comes to adverse weather. We often complain about the trials of winter, but do we really have it so bad? Just having a house to go back to at the end of the day is an asset that we all take for granted. Many people don’t have heat. There is no relief at the end of an afternoon commute. end up sleeping on the streets in the middle of a snowstorm. A few weeks ago, I took part in a Midnight Run. We went to the city and gave out bags of clothes to those who needed them the most. They were eternally grateful for our contributions. One man even tried to give us a thank you gift. Despite the fact that they have so little, the homeless people that we met proved to be some of the most generous. Even though some people regard them as “bums,” the homeless are fighting an uphill battle each and every

day. If one thinks living on minimum wage is tough, try surviving on change. Although I have no firsthand experience in the realm of the homeless, I can imagine just how hard it may be. People can be intolerant of the homeless. They wave them away when all they ask for is change. There is no daily salvation for this group of people that are trying so dearly just to make it. Before you curse the weather while waiting for your car to heat up, remember the men and women who are sleeping in the snow.

Stony Brook University’s Andrew Flescher, PhD, was awarded first place by the American Association of Publishers (AAP) with a Professional and Scholarly Excellence (PROSE) Award for his book, Moral Evil, in the publishing category of Theology and Religious Studies. Dr. Flescher is an Associate Professor in the

Departments of Preventive Medicine and English, and he is a member of the Core Faculty in the Program in Public Health at Stony Brook Medicine. The AAP’s annual awards program, established in 1976, recognizes the very best in professional and scholarly publishing in more than 40 categories. College To Be Honored Ride for Life, an organization dedicated to fighting ALS, has announced that it will honor St. Joseph’s College (SJC) and Gail Lamberta, Ph.D., associate academic dean and chair of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at SJC in the Education category at its Annual Ride for Life Kick-Off Fundraiser on Thursday, March 20th, at Lombardi’s on the Sound in Port Jefferson. Established in 1998, Ride for Life is a 150-mile wheelchair and scooter ride from Montauk to Manhattan to benefit those affected by ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disease

that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Each year, Ride for Life, led by patient and advocate Chris Pendergast, has stopped at SJC on its trek across Long Island where the College’s Recreation Club has provided the riders with lunch and, in certain instances, monetary donations. “I am humbled and honored to receive this award recognizing SJC’s support of Ride for Life,” said Dr. Lamberta. “I was introduced to Chris Pendergast through a dear friend more than 20 years ago and have always admired his dedication, commitment and courage. Chris is a remarkable human being and has

The donated produce helps to provide over 287 meals, and supplements items available at The Vets Place Food Pantry, which receives funding throughout the year from Long Island Cares to stock its shelves. “Long Island Cares has been a tremendous

supporter of our Veterans,” said Ms. Massimo, Program Director for Suffolk County United Veterans. “We are grateful for this donation, as so many of our Veteran and Military families struggle to make ends meet, especially with the recent cuts to food stamps.” The Vets Place food pantry is located at 32 Mill Road in Yaphank, and is open to all Veterans, Military, and their family each Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Suffolk County United Veterans, founded in 1989, serves the homeless

Flashback To Today By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There seems to be an obsession lately, especially on social networking sites, with “flashbacks” and “throwbacks” to times that, in hindsight, were happier and simpler. These moments are shared in the form of photos, videos, reminiscences of milestones and markers, all subtle indications that, for whatever reason, we are not overly happy in the now. But what of the present day? Some would contend that, to borrow from Billy Joel, this is the time to

remember (cause it will not last forever…la, la, la). And they would be correct. Difficult as it may be to step back and appreciate our current situation, whatever it may be, we may find that it was quite ideal in hindsight. No one knows what the next year, or month, or week, or even day, will bring. And there’s really not much sense dwelling on this vast unknown, as much of it is beyond our control. The important things, like family and friends and health and happiness… unfortunately, we can only do so much to maintain our little bubble

of complacency before some outside force pops it. They say you should find the positive in everything, make the most of adverse situations, and do at least one thing each day for you… but how many of us do? No, we would rather move robotically through life, obsessing over each obstacle, letting the slightest bump in the road throw us completely off course. One day, today will be the flashback we choose to highlight on some virtual “wall.” Let’s try enjoying it in real time.
