Free Diabetes Prevention Program Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone invites residents who have pre-diabetes or are at high risk for developing type-2 diabetes to participate in Suffolk County’s National Diabetes Prevention Program. The program is based a study led by the National Institutes of Health that showed that making modest lifestyle changes can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent in people at high risk for diabetes. The program, conducted by the Department of Health Services, will meet one hour per week, for 16 weeks, followed by monthly follow-up sessions. “Diabetes is a major health concern in Suffolk County and nationwide,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “The rate of the chronic disease continues to rise, especially in the African American and Hispanic populations. This program offers those who are at risk for diabetes an excellent opportunity to learn more about preventing diabetes and living a full life.” The classes cover lifestyle changes, including increasing physical activity and improving food choices. Participants work toward goals that lead to the prevention or delay of a diabetes diagnosis. A trained lifestyle coach will facilitate the class in a small group setting. According to the New York State Department of Health, diabetes is the most rapidly growing chronic disease of our time, affecting one out of every 12 adults in New York. Minority populations are at high risk, especially those who are African

Be Safe When Lightning Strikes Carolina, and Texas also must be extra cautious when lightning strikes. To stay safe, remember the mantra, “When thunder roars, go indoors.” In addition, the following precautionary measures can help people stay safe when lightning strikes. •Postpone outdoor activities if the weather forecast calls for thunder-storms. You also can use the 30-30 rule. After you see lightning, start counting to 30. If you hear thunder before you reach 30, go indoors. Suspend activities for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder, offers the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. •Avoid open areas outside. Do not be the tallest object in a field or area. Also, stay away from isolated tall trees, utility poles and towers. •If no shelter is available, crouch low with as little

of your body touching the ground as possible. •Lightning can travel through indoor plumbing, so avoid using water during a thunderstorm. Similarly, lightning can travel through electrical systems, like phones, radios and television reception systems. •A car can be a safe place to stay if no other non-concrete shelter is available. •Recognize that all thunderstorms produce lightning. Just because you can’t see lightning doesn’t mean it’s not there. •Get out of pools or other bodies of water. Water is an excellent conductor of lightning. •The human body does not store electricity, says the Insurance Information Institute. Therefore, if a person is struck, you can safely offer first aid. Lightning is no joke and never something to take lightly.

A change in seasons often brings about a change in the weather as well. Seasons marked by increased humidity in the air and warmer temperatures often usher in afternoon or evening thunderstorms. With those thunderstorms come potentially dangerous lightning. The National Weather Service says lightning strikes the United States roughly 25 million times a year, killing an average of 47 people each year. Worldwide, lighting kills as many as 2,000 people every year, states National Geographic. Even though the odds of being struck by lightning are low, certain factors put people at greater risk. Florida is considered the “lightning capital” of the United States, so residents of the Sunshine State should always exercise extreme caution upon seeing lightning. There were nine regional finalists, two honorable mentions and one third place winner from Harborfields this year. DECA’s mission is to prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. Fifteen Oldfield Middle School sixth graders will soon be published authors in the Creative Communication’s spring 2019 Poetry Anthology. Sixth grade teacher Monica Zenyuh said that her class recently completed their unit on poetry, during which each student selected one of their own poems to submit into the Creative Communication national writing contest. Creative Communication has published the anthology for over 20 years and hopes to inspire young writers through showcasing

and preserving their achievements. Out of the 24 poems that Ms. Zenyuh submitted, 15 were selected for publication. In a letter to the class, Tom Worthen, editor of Creative Communication, spoke of how rare it was to accept such a high number of entries, noting that less than 50% of all nationwide submissions are accepted. As a result, Oldfield Middle School will be recognized in the anthologu as having received a Writing Achievement Award, which is only given to the

top 10% of schools who enter. Each of the winning students will also receive a copy of the anthology as reminder of their great achievements. Performing Genetic Transformation Students in Arnold Kamhi’s Advanced Placement biology class at John H. Glenn High School performed a procedure known as genetic transformation, or genetic engineering. Genetic transformation means “change caused by genes,” and occurs when the cell incorporates and expresses a new piece of genetic material, or DNA derived from another

organism. Transformation involves the insertion of a gene into an organism to alter the recipient organism’s expression. Genetic transformation is used in many areas of biotechnology. In agriculture, genes coding for traits such as frost, pest, or spoilage resistance, can be genetically transformed into plants. In bioremediation, bacteria can be genetically

transformed with genes enabling them to digest and breakdown pollutants such as oil spills or heavy metals contamination. In medicine, disorders caused by defective genes are being treated by gene therapy; that is, by genetically transforming a sick person’s cells with healthy copies of the defective gene.

Relay For Life Kicks Off existing Relay for Life team or create a new one and join other like-minded individuals at the high school’s track on June 6 to raise awareness and funds to fight cancer. ‘Our goal is to get everyone here involved,” she said. As of Feb. 6, 55 participants had registered to join a total of 12 teams and had already raised $5,103 for the cause. The top three teams, “Team We Care,” “Team Storch,” and “Striding for a Cure,”

were recognized on stage for their contributions. The funds raised help the American Cancer Society to research early detection and prevention and provide comprehensive support to individuals affected by cancer. The society is currently investing more than $405 million towards cancer research. The evening concluded with a luminaria ceremony, were students, teachers, staff and community members lit candles to remember the lives of those lost to cancer.

Boyd Intermediate School Principal Dr. Denise Toscano to recognize two exceptional students. As student council presidents, both Adam and Gianna are deeply involved in the schoolâ€™s recycling program. Each week, council representatives collect paper and plastic recycling bins from each classroom to weigh and record. At the end of the month, the information is sent to the county. Adam and Gianna not only manage their bins but also train and inspire others to get involved.

The duo also does an exceptional job of informing teachers, staff and students about important school news during morning announcements and serve as master of ceremonies for all school assemblies and concerts. â€œGianna and Adam have made an exceptional team,â€? Signs You May Have A Thyroid Problem The thyroid gland plays an essential role in the human body. According to the online healthcare publishing company Medicine.net, the thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck that produces the hormones that regulate metabolism. When the thyroid gland’s ability to do its job is compromised, the effects can be serious and lead to a host of symptoms that don’t go away. While people may not be able to prevent thyroid conditions from developing, they can keep a watchful eye out for any of the aforementioned symptoms of overactive or underactive thyroids. Any such symptoms should be reported to a physician immediately. Medicine.net notes that, in most cases, thyroid disorders can be managed with treatment and are not life-threatening. Pets bring much joy to the lives they touch. So it should come as no surprise that the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey, which was conducted by the American Pet Products Association, found that about 85 million families in the United States own a pet. In Canada, 7.5 million households are home to companion animals, states the PetBacker blog. Pets offer companionship and unconditional love. While they are fitting for any family, seniors may find that having a pet is especially beneficial. The organization A Place for Mom, which helps match families with senior living residences, says pets provide a comfort system that produces measurable health results. Caring for pets and being around them can produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that may help to lower stress hormones while also increasing production of the feelgood hormone serotonin. This is not the only health benefit pets may provide. A recent study from the Mayo Clinic, which looked at 1,800 people between the ages of 25 and 64 who had healthy hearts, found that almost half owned a dog. Having a dog was likely to spur heart-healthy behaviors, like exercising with the pet, eating well and having ideal blood sugar levels. Pets also provide emotional support and companionship that can help seniors — including those who may be divorced or widowed — feel more secure and happy. The National Poll on Healthy Aging found that, among respondents who had pets, 88 percent said their pets helped them enjoy life, and 86 percent said their pets made them feel loved. Seniors considering getting a pet can explore the many benefits to doing so. • Reduce pain: A 2012 study published in Pain Magazine found therapy dogs provided “significant reduction in pain and emotional distress for chronic pain patients.”

• Feeling of purpose: Caring for an animal not only stimulates physical activity, but it also can give seniors a reason to get up and go, which equates to a feeling of purpose. • Altered focus: Having a pet can help seniors focus on something other than physical or mental health issues and preoccupations about loss or aging, according to New York-based psychologist Penny B. Donnenfeld. • Increased physical activity: Pets require care, and that interaction can get seniors moving more than if they didn’t have a pet. • Improved health: Ongoing research from Harvard Medical School has found dog owners have lower blood pressure, healthier cholesterol levels and lower risk of heart disease than those who don’t own a dog. • Stick to routine: Caring for pets helps seniors maintain a routine. Having structure after retirement can be important to ward off risk of depression. Staying on top of feeding, grooming and other pet needs also can help prevent cognitive decline. Pets bring many benefits to their owners’ lives, and they may be the perfect remedy for seniors looking for a friend and purpose.
