Student Spotlight BULLYING Bullying is defined as “an overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people,” according to http:// dictionar y.reference.com/ browse/bullying?s=t. Being a student in seventh grade and a victim of bullying, my definition for bullying is when somebody thinks you are weak, “odd” or strange and makes fun of you for being who you are simply because you are different than them. Bullying is a very serious subject. Many cases of bullying happen each day, and kids do not tell an adult so they can get help putting an end to it. I made this mistake. I did not initially tell an adult, and this lack of action only made it worse for me. If you are getting bullied, you need to tell somebody or

you could eventually become self-conscious and doubt yourself. You could lose selfesteem and believe that you are what the bully says you are and isolate yourself from your friends. You think to yourself when your friends invite you to hang out, “They are only going to turn their backs on me too. I should just stay away from them from now on so they do not bully me.” Your friends may sometimes be the only people to help in these situations. When I was bullied, it was for three years! One in ten people get bullied every day. If you notice somebody being bullied, you need to stand up for them and tell the bully, “Stop it! Leave them alone.” If you are continuing to see somebody being bullied, you need to get an adult

immediately. Sometimes you may think that people are just joking around, but their intentions are to just make fun of you without you actually realizing what they are doing to you. Bullying does not have to be just verbal; it can also be cyber bullying and also physical bullying. In my case, I was verbally bullied. The words hurt dreadfully, but one way of handling it was by talking to my family. This was my way of getting the point that I was being bullied out, and I was able to also communicate my feelings when I talked about my situation. My family guided me in techniques to handle the situation and how to put an end to the bullying. Bullying is a serious subject.

Shifting The Stones By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Confucius said, “The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” Such is the principle of proactivity based upon, of taking small steps to advance great lengths, ultimately. The key, of course, it to begin the process. Complacency is man’s worst enemy; however, settling into such a mindset is perhaps one of the simplest tasks to accomplish. Never mind that “To Do” list – it will be there tomorrow. And the next day. And the day after that. This is closely followed by its evil bedfellow, entitlement; that sense that you somehow deserve more than you have without feeling the need to prove it, or earn it, as the case

may be. Together, these flaws can lead once promising, motivated individuals down a path of bitterness, resentment and arrogance – not a flattering combination. The problem is, you don’t see it happening. You exist day to day, you settle into your routines, and then…well, then you just settle. Plain and simple. Ambition flies out the window, and with it, that drive that propelled you forward for so many years falls flat. As easy as it is to fall prey to this downward spiral, it takes a concerted effort to right the ship and get back on course. This is where the “small stones” come into play. Even something as simple as making lists, outlines of what needs to be done in a

particular time frame, can help. Sometimes, the simple act of checking an item off can make all the difference in turning a gloomy outlook into one of positivity. One item. One stone. One day at a time. And repeat, for as long as it takes to accomplish whatever it is your goal may be, whether something as simple as saving money for a particular item; or perhaps a far loftier ambition to go out and change the world. Whatever it is, however complex, all can be achieved using the same basic steps. So begin. And maintain. And, before you know it, this newfound motivation will become the stuff of habit – the good kind… the kind that leads to a fulfilling and successful life.

In recognition of Valentine’s Day, Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District hosted its annual PTA-sponsored Special Person Celebration, where students selected a special person to enjoy in various holiday festivities. With their special guest, each student entered the transformed cafeteria filled with music and colorful valentine decorations. The lively Harley students and

guests took to the dance floor in free style dancing along with traditional line dances. Around the corner from the dance party, students had the opportunity to take a professional photo with their guest to commemorate the special evening. To assist with the event, Elwood-John H. Glenn High School student council members worked with the younger students on Valentine’s Day crafts

and applied temporary tattoos on their hands. During a walk through tour, students proudly led their special person to various rooms and parts of the building. “It’s a nice way for the kids to connect with their special person and show them their school,” said PTA co-president Melissa Maher. “Harley is a special place and the students want to show it off to their loved ones.”

The Northport-East Northport UFSD is prepared to appoint Mr. Robert Banzer as its next Superintendent of Schools, pending contract finalization and final background checks. Mr. Banzer, who is a graduate of Northport High School (Class of 1984), is currently the Director of Human Resources in the Wayne Central School District, which is located outside of Rochester, NY. “Our Board of Education is pleased to be able to identify Mr. Banzer as our unanimous selection,”

said Board of Education President Julia Binger. “All of the finalists are outstanding professionals and we were delighted that they made this process a challenging one for the Board. Robert impressed us with his passion for education leadership, his knowledge and love of Northport-East Northport, and commitment to children and the educational community.” Mr. Banzer holds a Masters degree from SUNY Albany (with a concentration in Social Studies teaching) and a Bachelor’s degree from Hamilton College (with a concentration in Economics). He has also completed coursework for Executive Leadership from Creighton University. In addition to his current position, Mr. Banzer’s administrative career includes six years as the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction at the Brockport Central School District, almost three years as middle school principal,

and three years as Assistant Principal, all in Brockport. Mr. Banzer also was a classroom teacher in three different school districts since beginning his career in education in 1990. He has served as a football and baseball coach in three school districts and at the University at Albany. Mr. Banzer was chosen from a pool of 28 candidates who applied for the position. “Our search consultants – all community residents and education professionals who donated their time to lead this process – did an outstanding job in surfacing the finalists for this position, and we are grateful for their commitment and contributions,” said Mrs. Binger. It is anticipated that contract finalization will take up to two weeks. The Board looks forward to formally introducing Mr. Banzer to our community once the official appointment is made.

Hall Of History In an effort to enhance students’ learning experience, James H. Boyd Intermediate School fourth-grade teacher Nancy Agostini, along with principal Denise Toscano, Director of Humanities Pamela Fine and other fourth-grade educators created an interactive museum as a visual accompaniment to the fourth-grade history unit on colonial America and the Revolutionary War.

Dedicating an entire hallway to history, the museum includes authentic photos, primary documents, coins, maps, newspapers, clothes, musket balls and other items that the Elwood students can touch and try on to make it a truly interactive experience. To obtain items for the museum, the Boyd Intermediate School PTA rented the Long Island Spy Ring kit from the Three

Village Historical Society. Students will frequently visit the museum to take notes, ask questions and compare class discussions to authentic representations of artifacts and photos. “The gallery will remain on display for the remainder of the unit for students to enjoy and experience the excitement of American history,” said Agostini.

Assemblyman Andrew Raia recently joined the Art League of Long Island at a celebration of Dan Brown, a local artist who has dedicated his life to the arts. The one-man exhibit seeks to capture the very essence of his 91 years of experience on Earth. A classically trained artist, Brown uses pastels, water color and oil paintings to tell a variety of emotional stories and real life incidents that many can only dream of. Raia, a longtime friend of Brown’s, had the distinct honor of speaking at the exhibition and presenting him with an Assembly Proclamation, the highest honor an assemblyman may bestow.
