The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams. Some of their current programs and services are below: Counseling Services: YES CCC believe family involvement and assistance is an integral part of treatment for children, adolescents, and adults. After all, the greatest successes in treatment often occur when all family members recognize their role related to the presenting problem and are open to active participation in the healing and growing process. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. Addiction Services: Comprehensive treatment is available to children, adults and families facing the complex problems of chemical dependency, as well as DWI assessments and specialized recovery groups. Available to anyone. Early Intervention Project: This program offers prevention and early intervention services to teens and their families at the beginning stages of their alcohol or drug experimentation or abuse. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. School-Based Services: YES Community Counseling Center provides Social
Work services to elementary school aged students in various school districts. WISH Program: Women In Shared Healing (WISH) provides comprehensive services for community members who have been physically, sexually and/or emotionally abused, as well as those effected by or witness to domestic violence. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. Prevention Services: These services are provided to youth, families, parents and community groups and are designed to reduce individual, family and community level risk factors and increase protective factors. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. Parenting Programs: Various programs are offered to assist parents/guardians in raising children. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. YES CCC provides a financial literacy program called Commerce Plaza to students throughout Long Island at their Levittown location. This unique program immerses students in a simulated business community with hands-on experience by assigning them roles and tasks that replicate actual work experience. Students learn about leadership, budgeting, operating a business, banking skills, and teamwork. Since opening in May 2000, Commerce Plaza has hosted over 69,000 students from school districts on Long Island. Available to students in both Suffolk County and Nassau County. Project9line To Offer New Free Stand-Up Comedy & Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes
New Program At Suffolk Y JCC Social Justice Ambassador Program
The Social Justice Ambassador Program is an innovative partnership between SYJCC and the Huntington Anti-Bias Taskforce, aimed to bring together local high school students and empower them to be leaders and
agents of positive change in their schools and communities. Students will gather for six meetings and hear from incredible guest speakers and community activists. Participating schools are Harborfields High School,
Huntington High School, John Glenn High School, Northport High School, and Walt Whitman High School. None of this would be possible without the support and funding from UJA Federation.
Community Mondays at 7:00PM
Beginning on March 16th, Project9line will offer a brand-new Stand-Up Comedy Class. The class will be on Wednesdays at 7:00PM and will run for 8 weeks. Taught by the non-profit’s Program Director, Tugboat Manny, all participants will learn the fine art of stand-up comedy and be able to take part in a showcase (more Yoga: information to come).
Additionally, Community Visual Project9line is proud Art Class: Fridays at to have partnered with 10:30PM Long Island MMA to start Guitar Lessons: offering a free weekly Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Class Thursdays at 4:00PM

SCOUT SUNDAY HOSTED BY COMMACK UNITED METHODIST CHURCH - Boy Scout Troop 125 Boy Scouts and adult scouting volunteer leaders pose for a photo with Pastor Roslyn Lee and members of the church community following the Scout Sunday service at Commack United Methodist Church (Commack) on February 13th. Commack United Methodist Church, which sponsors Boy Scout Troop 125, was one of several Matinecock District (BSA)’s Host Churches for the Protestant Faith during the start of National Boy Scout Week. As the Boy Scouts of America celebrate their 112 years of serving youths, local Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Explorers attended and participated in the annual “A Scout is Reverent” recognitions during the Scout Sunday Services at various local Catholic and Protestant Churches and the Jewish Scout Sabbath services at area temples and synagogues during the month of February. Troop 125 Scouts were among other Boy Scout Troops and Cub Scout Packs who participated and helped to lead the services both in person and via zoom at Dix Hills Jewish Center, where Troop 125’s Life Scout Ian Schnitzer assisted Rabbi Ian Silverman in leading the Friday evening 2022 Scout Sabbath services.

Assistant coach Marlo shared “For the other coaches to bestow an honor like that on Matthew was beyond my expectation and is a special honor for our program at Northport. It validates what we strive for: winning the right way.” “As a parent and coach, I truly feel blessed to have
had the opportunity to coach my sons and all of the other great student athletes at Northport over the past three seasons. We are doing special things here in Northport,” he added. As a sophomore, Matthew has two more years to continue honing his talents and perfecting his skills. He will head to the state tournament in Albany on Feb. 25 and 26. Head coach Thad Aliberti said “our hope for Matt in the future is to have him continue to lead the program by example. Matt is consistently working to improve and challenge himself by seeking out the best competition in the country.”

It’s been an incredible season for Northport High School sophomore Matthew Marlow, who was named the school’s first ever “Most Outstanding Wrestler” by Section XI for the Division I tournament on Feb. 13. In addition to winning the 118 lb. champion title, being selected as “Most Outstanding Wrestler” is a unique accomplishment that speaks to his overall performance throughout the season and sportsmanship on his team. To earn this title, each of the varsity wrestling coaches throughout Suffolk County vote on the student who had the most impressive tournament out of the 13 individual weight class champions in the county. The Northport Middle School National Junior Honor Society recently organized a DVD drive for the residents at the Northport VA. Due to the ongoing pandemic, patients are not able to socialize much. When the honor society advisers Cheryl Gavin and Christine Carroll heard that residents had been given DVD players for their rooms but didn’t have many DVDs, they went into action. The members of the
Northport Middle School community donated more than 300 DVDs to the drive. National Junior Honor Society students organized and boxed all of the DVDs and loaded them into cars. The recreational therapist created a library for the residents to borrow DVDs for their viewing pleasure. Supporting community service and selflessly doing for others is one of the messages the advisers hope to deliver to their members
each year. “The students enjoyed putting together the DVDs and are excited to know that they have now provided a source of enjoyment for the residents who are unable to get out and about due to COVID restrictions,’ shared adviser Cheryl Gavin. Th National Junior Honor Society has 75 student members; however, DVDs were donated by students, staff and families of the entire school.
BOE Recognizes NHS Science And Technology Students Two Northport High School students were recognized by the Northport-East Northport Board of Education for their work in science and technology. Senior Esther Loring was honored as the schools Rotary Student of the Month in science. District Chairperson of Science, Technology & Engineering David Storch described Esther as “one of the most dedicated and passionate science students our department has had the pleasure to work with as defined by her maturity, powerful intellect, love of learning, and her numerous contributions to
our STEM programs.” Esther is a STEM Scholar and a National Merit Commended Student, earning high marks in honors science and AP chemistry, participating in four years of advanced scientific research and is currently working toward the completion of a two year sequence in IB Physics. She has also been an active participant in the SPARK Crystallography Group at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) since 10th grade. Fellow senior Justin Marques was recognized as Rotary Student of the Month for technology. Mr. Storch described

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) joined the students and staff at Silas Wood Sixth Grade Center in Huntington Station for their Great Kindness Challenge Program. The Great Kindness Challenge at Silas Wood was kicked off with a “Cultivate Kindness” assembly presentation by Richard Specht of the ReesSpecht Life foundation that relayed to students the importance of kindness and respect. Legislator Donnelly also visited some of the classrooms with In a recent report released by the New York State Education Department, Elwood John H. Glenn High School scored in the top 10% statewide in student achievement on Advanced Placement college-level coursework and exams. Long Island’s school districts rank No. 1 statewide and accounted for nearly half of all districts scoring in the top 10% in the AP’s report, sponsored by the College Board. “First and foremost, I’m very proud of our students and staff for this wonderful distinction,” Principal Carisa Burzynski said.

District Expands String Program To Third Grade

Northport-East Northport school district’s newly expanded third grade string orchestra program is embracing the support of their involved parents. To ensure students are practicing their instruments at home, the district has invited parents to learn and play alongside their children four times per month. Expanding the string orchestra program had been a hope of the district for over 16 years and was made possible following the district reorganization last year. Student musicians are often limited in their
at-home practice due to parents not knowing how to play. By opening up lessons to parents, the hope is that they will be able to reinforce the skills built in class while home. Enrolled third graders each received a violin and parents were offered a discount to purchase or rent one from local vendors, or if they already have an adult size violin, they could bring their own. The students learn either before school or during recess with teacher Veronica Kiss and their parents are invited to join them either after school on
Tuesdays or on Saturdays, four times per month. Parents do not need to know how to play the instrument prior to attending and the group is a mix of first-time musicians and experienced players. The program had significant interest and ultimately students were chosen by lottery as participation was limited. “It was worth the wait because of the joy we saw in the parents and the kids,” said Director of Orchestras Michael Susinno. “It’s one of the few opportunities for parents to come in and witness learning first hand. They loved it.”

NHS Students Place In Top Teams Northport High School digital generation students celebrated the culmination of their hard work during the annual final project presentations at Stony Brook University on Jan. 25. Over 120 students from seven Long Island high schools participated in the event, which allows students from different schools to team up to develop their presentations which explore the power of the internet & social media
to enhance web presence & digital profile. The first-place team included two Northport High School students, sophomores Lillian Clements and Alexandra Curatolo, with the topic of “The Future of the Travel Industry.” Additionally, sophomore Ryan DiMario was a member of the second-place team with the topic “Online Education” and junior Violet Wendol was a member of the
third-place team with the topic “Technology and the impact on Children”. All students enrolled in Digital Generation are able to earn college credit through Stony Brook University, who hosted the final competition. The competition was judged by administrators from all seven participating districts, with the winning teams receiving Amazon gift cards.

According to Gallup’s 2021 Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents
indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many
working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.

Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps Yunis started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism. JOE REBOLI 5G PHOTOGRAPH STREETSCAPE The Reboli Center for Art & History in Stony Brook will for the first time feature the photographs of the late artist Joseph Reboli and several wellknown Long Island and New York based photographers such as: Donna Crinnian; Jeremy Dennis; Vanessa Fischer; Daniel Jones; Jacques LeBlanc; Timothy McCarthy; Jessica Neilson; Patricia Paladines; Matthew Raynor, Paul Scala; Leonid Shishov; Corinne Tousey; Marlene Weinstein; and Jo-Anne Wilson. The exhibit is titled Through the Lens and can be viewed through March 27, 2022. In conjunction with this exhibit, a companion show is in the History Room focusing on the life and work of nature photographer, Howard Eskin, a patron of the arts and dear friend of Joseph Reboli, who also collected many of his paintings. The Reboli Center is grateful to Lisa Eskin for lending items and for providing background information. In addition, there will be a slideshow depicting the evolution of photography from when the first recorded photograph was taken in the early 1800s. “Just as Joe’s paintings glowed with illuminous light, so do his photographs. Joe was not widely known for his photography, but he really enjoyed it and I am happy to share that side of him. I have known the Eskin family for a longtime, and am very proud to document Howard’s life and work as part of this new exhibit,” said Lois Reboli, a founder and president of the Reboli Center for Art & History. A complementary program to the organization’s already existing trust and financial services, the Life’s WORC Planned Giving Program will enable donors to create a lasting legacy that benefits Life’s WORC and those it serves, while also giving donors significant financial benefits. According to Life’s WORC’s CEO Janet Koch, “Our donors are vital to our ability to fulfill our mission. Providing another way that enables them to help those we serve and address their financial goals prompted us to develop the Planned Giving Program. It is a natural extension of our other financial services and will enable Life’s WORC to be a better resource to both individuals with disabilities and their families, as well as a broader cross-section of the community.” The Life’s WORC Planned Giving Program offers donors various options. Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received
surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.
The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.
Connecting Military Parents And Children, One Story At A Time
(StatePoint) For deployed service members who are also parents, being away from their kids is often the hardest part of the job. This is why the United Service Organizations (USO) has prioritized connecting military parents with their families. One way to bring service members a reminder of home is through USO entertainment tours, the most famous tour veteran, of course, being legendary comedian Bob Hope. Hope’s legacy of service lives on today through the Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program. Likewise, military kids can record themselves reading a book and share the story time memories with their parents serving overseas. Additionally, local USO reading events encourage kids to use their creativity and complete a craft that complements a story’s theme. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and many locations had to temporarily shut their doors, this did not deter USO volunteers and staff from finding innovative ways to continue their efforts safely. USO Erbil in Iraq put their ingenuity to work and outfitted the
back of a pickup truck with a makeshift trifold to serve as a reading “room.” They then decorated the inside of the room and packed up a box of books, some props and a chair. The USO team drove the truck all around base, stopping outside popular locations as well as remote areas to reach as many service members as possible with their new, unofficial “Bob Hope on the Road” reading room. The Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program gives that opportunity back to deployed parents.
Autism And Children According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed
four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of
autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. During each session, students explore topics of bias, identify resources and strategies to combat bias, and work collaboratively to develop tangible projects that enable them to share their knowledge with their school and community. As a culminating activity, students will apply the concepts and strategies they learned in the SJA
program to create a plan of action that targets and addresses bias in their school and community.
