The funds were raised in 2015 by the Long Island Fight for Charity through its year-long series of events, particularly its 12th Main Event in November when over 20 businesspeople donned boxing gloves and met each other in the boxing ring at the Hilton-Long Island. Fight for Charity’s Main Event drew a record crowd of over 1,000 fans, alumni boxers and representatives of corporate and restaurant sponsors and committee members and volunteers to make it one of the organization’s most successful fund raisers since 2003. To date, over
275 men and women have earned the title of LI-FFC Alumni Boxer. “The presentation of donation checks to the five Long Island charities is a culmination of the commitment and effort put forth by our 2015 volunteer boxers and all the people involved in making the LIFFC mission succeed. Our 12th Main Event was exciting and successful due to the kindness of the sponsors and the many volunteers who participated, especially our boxers. I hope these selfless individuals will serve as an example to other businesspeople as we call for volunteers for the 2016 line-up of boxers,” said Jamie Austin, Chair
of LIFFC and Director of Online Business Solutions at Protravel International. Fight for Charity Boxers are business professionals who believe in “giving back” to the community in a meaningful way. The men and women volunteers went into serious training at five participating gyms to prepare to go toe-totoe with their opponents at the Main Event. There were a series of events held leading up to the Main Event, which featured a boxing card with 13 bouts, networking opportunities, exciting ringside fun and plenty of food and beverages provided by local restaurants. Long Island Fight for Charity, one of Long Island’s most popular and most unique charity fund raising and networking organizations, recently held a Boxer Appreciation and Charity Donation Presentation at SimPlay in Hauppauge to give check donations amounting to over $160,000 to representatives of several Long Island-based charities. Since 2003 LI-FFC has donated over $1 million to local charities. “Fight for Charity sponsors a series of events throughout the year that bring out the best qualities of the men and women in the Long Island business community. Last year’s Main Event was very successful in
terms of attendance, sponsorships and funds raised,” said Fight for Charity Co-Founder Matt Silver. “The dedication and commitment of the boxers was inspiring. In return we provided the volunteers with a once in a lifetime experience in the boxing ring. We challenge members of the Long Island business community to step up and step into the ring at the 2016 Fight for Charity.”
Volunteers Needed United Healthcare in collaboration with Stanford University asked a random sampling of adults if they volunteer. A huge percentage (49%) said no, and, when asked why, 42% of the respondents answered that they had
never been asked! The Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Suffolk, Inc. (RSVP), funded by The SC Office for Aging and the Corporation for National and Community Service, was established in 1972, and
they are inviting seniors 55 or better, to come and join in volunteering at over 85 not-for-profits in Suffolk County. These placements offer a diversity of interesting tasks, ranging from helping in schools, soup

Strolling Into Spring By: Jamie Lynn Ryan March. That month of transition. The beginning of spring and all things new. A rebirth of sorts. Or so we convince ourselves, anyway. Why not January, or February? I suppose weather has as much to do with our moods as any internal factors; and, while March makes no promises with regard to its atmospheric conditions, I think we can safely assume that the worst of winter is now behind us. There is something about the blossoming of trees and flowers, the lengthening of daylight hours, the greening of the now-barren grounds… it signals a revitalization of the year as it stands, a pause in the monotony, a gradual phasing out of the state of hibernation many of us have
been mired in since the holiday season. Just last weekend, I took the time to stroll along two of our pristine Long Island beaches – one on the outskirts of Northport, and the other out on the North Fork. Sure, it was a bit brisk and barren; but just to experience the fresh sea air, to feel the sand beneath my (sneakered) feet, to gaze out onto the crystal blue Long Island Sound… there is something to be said for venturing outside and exploring. That said, it would’ve been nice to have maybe just a couple more snow days to vegetate with a clear conscience, to stay under the covers and catch up on Netflix. The one true “blizzard” was exactly that, one and done, over a weekend. Kind of a waste. The rest of the “snow
days” were more of a minor inconvenience, not nearly enough down time to truly capitalize. That’s the thing about time. When we have it to spare, we don’t often utilize it to its full potential, choosing instead to waste it idling away the hours on trivial things like sleep and mindless chores. Instead, choose to take that leisurely drive, set out on a new adventure to an unexplored corner of the world – even within your own neighborhood. Take pictures, read books, paint, write a song… do things you’ve always wanted to do, today. Tomorrow may be partly cloudy with a chance of rain; but that also means there’s at least an equal chance of sun. May spring be that season of hope for everyone.

The Suffolk County volunteer committee attended The Fresh Air Fund’s annual Friendly Towns Leadership Conference from Friday, February 5th through Sunday, February 7th at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. Over
the course of three days, volunteers participated in interactive workshops with The Fresh Air Fund’s fulltime staff and community agency partners. The volunteers learned to how support their Friendly Towns communities, received data management
training, communicated with New York City agency partners that register the program’s children, and attended various training sessions such as public relations and social media. Former Fresh Air child Darryl Rattray, the Associate Commissioner
for Community Centers and Strategic Partnerships at the Department of Youth and Community Development in New York City, gave the keynote speech. Darryl shared with the 250 volunteers in attendance how The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program greatly impacted his life. The closing ceremony included a celebration of long-time volunteer leader and host parent Patty LeRoy for her 50 years of dedicated volunteerism to The Fresh Air Fund. Patty was reunited with her former Fresh Air child Donnalese as well as her current Fresh Air child Krystie. “What an inspirational
weekend at The Fresh Air Fund’s annual Friendly Towns Leadership Conference! Meeting the Fresh Air staff, hearing many amazing stories from former and current participants, learning how to grow the program and re-energizing us to kick off the new season! Only five months till the first buses arrive!” said Eva Lennon, a volunteer from Harleysville, PA. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls,
from seven to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children on first-time visits are seven to 12 years old and stay for one or two weeks. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine
every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated
regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check—name, signature,
address—can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs, shopping carts and your car. • Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also,

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Forest Ranger David Nally was named “2015 Environmental Enforcement Officer of the Year” by the Pine Barrens Law Enforcement Council (PBLEC). Each year the membership of the PBLEC gets to select individuals who they feel deserve to be recognized for their work within the Central Pine Barrens. PBLEC consists of more than 26 law enforcement organizations in Suffolk County. Forest Ranger Nally was given this award in part for his participation in over 12 joint Pine Barrens Law Enforcement Council coordinated All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) enforcement patrols.

Each ranger is required to reside within the ranger district in which she/he is assigned but emergencies and special events will require them to work anywhere and at any time. Quite often, rangers are asked to assist other agencies with complex emergency or law enforcement incidents that have occurred in or near a forested area. Since New York has 18.6 million acres of forested lands, rangers are busy year-round accomplishing their unique mission. Ranger Nally has served with distinction in DEC’s Division of Forest Protection since graduating from DEC’s 19th Law Enforcement Training Academy in 2013 where he was assigned to patrol the eastern Towns of Suffolk County. Ranger Nally’s patrol responsibilities include protection of natural resources from wildfire and enforcement against illegal ATV activities and off road vehicle use, illegal dumping activities and enforcement of hunting regulations. During his tenure as a Forest Ranger, Ranger Nally has been deployed on a western wildland firefighting incident in Washington state, assisted with the management of the New York Wildfire and Incident Management Academy and devoted over two months of time to southern pine beetle eradication efforts at the DEC-managed Henrys Hollow in Hampton Bays. Ranger Nally, along with other regionally based Forest Rangers and Environmental Conservation Officers, also provided logistical and transportation support to other emergency response agencies during this winter’s storm Jonas and last winter’s storm Juno. Ranger Nally spends his spare time with his family in the Town of Riverhead.

High Arts Showcase The Huntington Arts Council is proud to announce High Arts Showcase XII a student art exhibit. This show runs from the opening reception on March 4th from 6 to 8 p.m. through Saturday the 19th, at the Main Street Gallery, 213 Main Street Huntington. All are welcome to attend. This is a free event. In its 12th year, the High Arts Showcase is an exhibition opportunity for students who attend one of our JOURNEY partner schools. This year there are six partner schools participating in the exhibit; Cold Spring Harbor, Harborfields, Huntington, Northport-East Northport, Plainview/Old Bethpage and South Huntington. There are over 40 students in grades 11 and 12 who are participating in the show. The work reflects
a variety of media; water color, digital photography, sculpture, mixed media, colored pencil etc., all displaying exceptional levels of talent. You will be joined at the opening reception by artist member Bill Grabowski who will present the awards of excellence to those selected students. Bill, a Huntington resident, is an elementary art educator who describes his career as an artist as encompassing and enriching his entire life. The concept of reinvention drives the creation of Bill’s artwork. Be it photography, mixed media, painting, or creative writing, Bill strives to redefine our impressions of our life and surroundings to create new visions of our world. The Huntington Arts Council established the JOURNEY Program in 1985
as a means of integrating cultural arts into classroom curriculum. JOURNEY is a multicultural arts-in-education program developed by the Huntington Arts Council in partnership with school districts. The goal of JOURNEY is to foster the appreciation of cultural diversity through the arts. Tulip Festival Photo Winners Councilman Mark Cuthbertson and the Huntington Town Board, and Astoria Bank, which is the Chief Sponsor of the Huntington Tulip Festival, recognized the winners of the 2015 Tulip Festival Photo Contest at the February 10th, 2016 town board meeting. First place and a $150 award check went to Amanda Camps of Medford for her photo, “Peach Princess.” Second place and the $100 prize was awarded to Steven Selles of Huntington for “Tulip Rhapsody” and third place and the $50 prize went to Frank O’Brien of Huntington Station for “Water for Tulips.” Frank O’Brien’s daughters, Bonnie Wojcik and Kate Carey, accepted on behalf of their father, who passed away in January 2016. The American Legion Riders are a diverse group of motorcycle enthusiasts sharing common goals. All are members of The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, or Sons of The American Legion - and all are united by patriotism. They answer the call to ride in service to America’s military, her veterans, and for the
children and youth of our country. The activities of The American Legion Riders are limited only by the imagination of the members of the local Riders organizations, and many chapters have independently raised thousands of dollars for local children’s hospitals, schools, veterans’ homes, severely wounded servicemen and women, and American Legion scholarship programs. In 2015, American Legion Riders from around the country raised over one million dollars for The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund.

Honored for Bravery At the February 9th Town Board meeting, Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and the Town Council recognized two East Northport Fire Department members who had received the Huntington Chiefs Council’s 2015 “Chiefs of the Year Award” for their for their bravery in attempting to rescue a 90 year-old woman from a house fire. Chief Joseph Ervin and Second Assistant Chief Daniel Heffernan had responded to the fire on Grover Lane in East Northport and were told by a neighbor that the
house’s resident, a 90 yearold woman who lived there alone, was trapped inside. They donned appropriate gear and entered the burning building, locating the woman lying face down in a second floor hallway outside the bedroom doorway. Amid heat and smoke, they were able to drag the woman to the top of the stairs, where other firefighters helped take her out of the house and onto the front lawn. Unfortunately, the woman did not survive. For their bravery, the two received Medals of Valor from the Suffolk County Fire Academy the

In the end, the team that walked away with the title was “Keys to Success,” but the true champions were the students who came together and raised a total of $3,200 for the two causes.
