Councilwoman Susan A. Berland and the Huntington Youth Council (HYC) are once again inviting Town of Huntington residents to the Dix Hills Ice Rink for the annual spring “Sports Swap.” Athletes and their families are encouraged to bring gently used hockey, figure skating, baseball, lacrosse and soccer equipment to the official drop-off box at the Dix Hills Ice Rink from February 25th to March 10th to receive a voucher for each item donated. On Saturday, March 11th, from 2 to 4 p.m., residents bring their voucher(s) back to the Ice Rink to shop, swap and socialize. Those unable to donate equipment can still shop by donating $5.00 for each item purchased. All proceeds will be donated to Town of Huntington charities to be chosen by the HYC. “I am looking forward to once again hosting the annual spring Sports Swap with the Huntington Youth Council,” said Councilwoman Susan A. Berland. “Shopping for sports equipment can be very expensive. It’s a winwin if we can save families some money, provide this ‘swap’ opportunity and also raise funds for those in need.” The Huntington Youth Council was founded in 2003 by Councilwoman Susan A. Berland and is comprised of students from every public high school in the Town of Huntington. The HYC meets monthly to discuss issues that affect the youth in our community and plan events that engage their peers in local issues. Over the past 13 years, the HYC has raised thousands of dollars for local charities in the Town of Huntington. Accepting Entries Suffolk County Legislator Lou D’Amaro is pleased to extend an invitation to Deer Park, Half Hollow Hills, North Babylon and South Huntington elementary school students to

participate in the Suffolk County Legislature’s “Be Pool Smart” poster contest. Established in 2007, the competition invites elementary school students to promote the importance of pool safety by creating a

poster that illustrates one or more safety tips. One poster is selected from all of those submitted to be used as part of a countywide message from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services in its

seasonal safety campaign. Two other student entries are named as second and third place winners. “The ‘Be Pool Smart’ poster contest is a fun way to engage children in spreading the important

messages about how a few simple steps and precautions can help us avoid tragedies around swimming pools,” said Legislator D’Amaro. Last year, John F. Kennedy Intermediate

School student Oviya Omprakash of Deer Park was selected as the Suffolk County second place winner. She was honored along with her art and

Having hope and persevering means that the Black American story will not be written until some more difficult chapters are complete. It means not stopping until a final American

story is written, where this country truly lives up to the promise articulated in its founding document, the Declaration of Independence…that it is self-evident that all men and women are created equal.” Councilman Cook noted the 30th anniversary of the program. “It’s a great celebration,” he said. “I’ve been here for a number of years, and I enjoy it every year. Everybody gets together and we enjoy the evening. We can all work together to make things better - it has to be hand in hand together.” Councilwoman Edwards said, “It is important for us to celebrate, but also to remember. It is very fitting that tonight, on our 30th anniversary, we honor Betty Miller, who started the Black History Month, and fitting that

Les Payne, our champion, our journalist, right here from Huntington, is being recognized here tonight.” In a public career spanning 40 years, Miller served as the Town’s director of minority affairs. She was also honored for her roles in many community organizations, including the Huntington Branch of the NAACP for which she is a past president. She has also served on the boards of Long Island Cares, the Huntington Arts Council, the Family Service League, the Huntington Community Food Council and the National Council of Negro Women. “This is my community, and I just want to say, I love everybody,” Miller said in accepting a proclamation from the Town Board noting her achievements. “I am grateful to all the citizens of Huntington who I have had the pleasure of assisting. This award has given me a great sense of accomplishment and a renewed dedication to continue down the path I have chosen to follow.” Payne, a longtime Greenlawn resident, is a former editor, reporter and columnist at Newsday who directed coverage that won every major journalism award, including six Pulizter Prizes. He is a founder and past president of the National Association of Black Journalists and the founder of The Trotter Group, a national organization of African-American writers of newspaper commentary. “This is my home. This is where I live. We raised our family here,” Payne said in his remarks. I am a big fan of the Town of Huntington. Its magnets have always appealed to me – the Heckscher Museum, Book Review, the Cinema Arts Center an IMAC. We love this place, and we live here, and I expect after that to be here.” Special thanks were given to Huntington Toyota, the sponsor of the evening.

The history-based play “Harriet, Rosa and Me” received a rousing reception at its world premiere February 16th, performed as part of the Town of Huntington’s 30th annual Black History program. Written and produced by Grammy and Emmy-award winning director J.D. Lawrence, the musical play tells the story of a high school student named Hope who skips school to avoid attending her Black History class, only to encounter a woman named Rosa (as in Parks) at a bus stop and a woman named Harriet (as in Tubman) at a subway station. Together, they show Hope the importance studying Black History and highlight some of the women of color who have left indelible stamps on history, ranging from an Egyptian pharaoh to women who have run for U.S. president. “How many of you learned something here?” Lawrence asked the audience of more than 400 people at Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School. When almost all of the audience raised their hands, Lawrence responded, “It is 2017, we have to do better….This is everybody’s history. It is not just Black History. It is American History.” The program included songs performed by the Voices of Huntington choir, an invocation by Suffolk County Legis. Dr. William Spencer, the benediction by Pastor Gloria Mixon of Mount Calvary Holy Church and remarks by Town Council Members Mark Cuthbertson, Eugene Cook and Tracey A. Edwards. Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Councilwoman Susan A. Berland were unable to attend. “We live in interesting times…that echo what happened 50 and 60 years ago during the Civil Rights Era,” Councilman Cuthbertson said in his remarks. “We are blessed and lucky in this country because we confront these interesting times in a much easier way because of all the work that has been done.” He added,

I’m fairly good with directions. For someone who, as a passenger, is rather oblivious to her surroundings, once in the driver’s seat, I can generally navigate with little trouble. Of course, in this day and age, there is always the added benefit of GPS to fall back on. And by benefit, I mean often maddening source of frustration and bewilderment. Case in point: my friend and I have, over the last several years, attended several of the laser light shows at the Vanderbilt Planetarium. Of course, there are several possible routes to take, but all roads ultimately lead to one winding, somewhat meandering path through the

hilly terrain of Centerport. As these shows are generally in the evening, I always plug the address into the phone’s map so as to be sure I don’t miss a turn en route. Of the approximately half a dozen times we have headed this way, I can honestly say we have never managed to travel the same way twice. Never. Not once. Just last week, as if to prove the point, my phone’s darling virtual assistant proceeded to take us on a grand tour of the residential area surrounding the planetarium, complete with dozens of unnecessary turns (followed by U-turn’s and “rerouting”), forks in the road (continue heading straight, she said) and even a pass over a small body of water (do you remember there

being a bridge here before?). And on the return trip, there was more of the same – except, not quite the same, as we detoured through an entirely different neighborhood. How is this possible?? At a certain point, it became more a source of amusement, a fun guessing game as to which way she might send us next. Amazingly, our time of arrival only fluctuated by a minute or so, in spite of the fact that our route never came close to matching the virtually straight line that had appeared on the map. It was a bizarre journey, to be sure – and will continue to be, should we venture that way again. That, at least, seems to be a guarantee.
