Great South Bay Power Squadron of America’s Boating Club is pleased to announce a Coastal Navigation Course for the spring of 2018.The course is scheduled to begin on March 15th, at the West Islip Public Library located at 3 Higbie Lane, West Islip. The course will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday evenings. The course will run around 12 weeks. The course, “Coastal Navigation – Piloting,” covers the basics of Coastal and Inland Navigation. The course focuses on GPS navigation as a primary navigational tool while covering traditional navigational techniques using a chart and charting tools. Upon completion, students should expect to be comfortable charting and navigating courses to new destinations as well as using paper charts should their electronics fail. The course includes many in-class exercises, developing the student’s

skills through hands-on practice and learning. The exam is a take home, and students will have one week to complete it and return it to the instructor. Topics of the course include: • How to read a chart and chart interpretation • Navigational Aids and how they point to safe water • Plotting Courses, Determining Distance and Direction • The Mariner’s Compass and converting between True and Magnetic • Use of GPS, Typical GPS displays, Information GPS provide • Monitoring and determining progress with GPS • Using GPS and Manual plotting techniques together • The “Seaman’s Eye” Cost of the course is

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly is pleased to inform residents that Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County will be presenting Parenting the Second Time Around (PASTA) in Spanish at the South Huntington Public Library as part of its Family Health and Wellness Program. The free eight-week program will begin on Thursday, March 1st and run each Thursday thereafter through April 19th from 6 to 8:30 p.m. It is designed for grandparents and relative caregivers who are raising their grandchildren or other relatives. Each session covers a different topic that will help to guide grandparents or caregivers raising a new generation and experiencing challenges unforeseen 20 to 30 years ago. Child care and refreshments for the participants and their children will be provided. The program commencing on March 1st will be taught exclusively in Spanish.

Oh, the Places You’ll Go When I graduated from high school, I was given the noted Dr. Seuss book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” as a symbolic gesture of good luck toward any and all future pursuits. I since came to learn that this particular gift has been somewhat of a tradition for those moving onward and upward in life - no matter the age. Of course, the places outlined in the magical land of Seuss are not so much literal; but, rather, a figurative representation of the adventures which await those on the brink of adulthood, the endless potential for exploration and the Great Places which exist just over yonder. The poem reads like a veritable how-to, designed to assist in navigating the twists and turns life is sure to reveal in the years to come. Nearly 20 years beyond this stepping stone, the words

ring just as true: “Step with care and great tact… and remember that Life’s A Great Balancing Act.” Indeed it is. I recently listened to a podcast which analyzed the age-old query of whether happiness leads to success, or vice versa. Like the chicken/ egg debate, there is of course no concrete answer; however, most research seems to suggest that happiness is the starting point from which the greatest success blossoms. To be in a positive state is to have a productive, constructive mindset, making growth that much easier. Delving deeper into the topic, it was stated that those who attempt to find that tedious work/life “balance” are often misdirected in their goal. In reality, these elements will never truly exist in the perfect proportion we strive for, as our existence - and all the elements which affect

it - are in a continuous state of flux. Rather, the objective should be to find a place of fulfillment within, making the necessary adjustments along the way as we navigate those same twists and turns predicted by Dr. Seuss all those years ago. Taking this lesson into a geographic territory, it was recently brought to my attention that the passport I obtained some five years ago is nearly halfway to its expiration date, having been used precisely once on my very first international flight - first flight anywhere, in fact - to the Emerald Isle. Where to next? The fact is, it doesn’t really matter. Anywhere will do, so long as it brings pleasure and adventure and a newfound sense of discovery. Your mountain is waiting. So . . . get on your way!

A Partnership Master’s degree students enrolled in Stony Brook University’s (SBU) Occupational Therapy Program recently kicked off their field placements with Options for Community Living Inc. Options’ operates residential programs for adults recovering from mental illness that provide stability, safety and support enabling them to develop their fullest potential for independent living. The agency currently provides supportive housing for more than 400 Long Islanders recovering from mental illness. “They really helped me to see what’s blocking my progress,” said Options resident Matt about his experience working with Kristen Czelusniak (Farmingdale), Lauren Flicker (Smithtown) and Susanne Haaser (Selden) – first year students in SBU’s Occupational Therapy Program. “We are happy to help each person work on their individual goals and work toward greater independence,” stated Haaser. As an occupational therapist, “you can build a relationship with your client/ patient. You get to see their gradual progression. It’s more personal than seeing a doctor once or twice a year.” This is the second year of the Options for Community Living and Stony Brook University collaboration. As part of their field placement, the Occupational Therapy (OT) students work with groups of residents and engage group members in meaningful activities to improve their skills. “We interview, evaluate and assess the physical barriers to individual success,” described Czelusniak. “We then establish an Occupational Therapy Profile for each person that details what we call their roles, goals and

barriers. It takes into account their occupational experience and history, their interests, routines and environment.” At Options, the OT students focused on skill development helpful to all of the group participants. “Last week, we worked on coping skills. Playing a card game is one way to take your mind away from unhealthy thoughts. Another technique involves becoming aware of negative thoughts and changing them into positive thoughts using a charting method,” said

Czelusniak. “We are delighted to partner with the Stony Brook students,” said Options for Community Living Executive Director Yolanda RobanoGross. “Occupational therapy takes a person-centered approach to intervention which is vital to helping someone overcome barriers to success. These students are helping our residents grow more confident and independent.”

Honoring Achievements “This prestigious award didn’t happen by accident,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Francesco Ianni. “This is the work of the entire district, and the dedication of our high school administration, and it’s a huge point of pride for us.” Oldfield Middle School Assistant Principal Joseph Castoro was recently named Administrator of the Year by the Council of Administrators and Supervisors. He was recognized by the board and by Dr. Ianni

A special recognition for eighth-grader Wyatt LaFountaine took place during the evening as well. Wyatt, whose chosen charity won the eighthgrade class’ vote to support through their annual Charity Challenge, was recognized by the board for his dedication to the cause and bringing awareness to giving back. Wyatt’s chosen charity was myFace, a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming the lives of patients with facial disfigurement.

National Merit Finalist Northport High School senior Julianne Starzee, named a National Merit Semifinalist last fall, was recently named a finalist in the program. This prestigious program honors the nation’s

P.S. I Love You Day was celebrated at East Northport Middle School on February 9th. The goal of this day, which is held the Friday before Valentine’s Day every year, is to bring awareness to students of how important it is to

ultimately prevent suicide. This year’s theme was “go the extra mile.” “This day is so important, especially for middle school students, because at this age many of them feel like they’re on the outside,” Unity Club adviser Sandra Leahy said. Hall of Presidents A hall of presidents came to life at Fifth Avenue Elementary School in the Northport-East Northport School District on February 12th. Second grade students, each dressed up as a president such as Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln or George Washington, were stationed throughout a makeshift “museum” in

the school’s all-purpose room. When a president’s button was pressed, the student came to life to tell the museumgoer about their history. Loved ones and teachers attended, weaving through the tiny presidents and pressing buttons to learn about their history. These speeches were a result of an extensive library research project,

where students spent time learning about their presidents and writing a detailed report. “Students had to learn how to research and then synthesize information in their own words,” said second-grade teacher Maureen Petrone. “That’s quite the task for a second grader, but they all did wonderful jobs.”

Distinguished Finalist

Northport High School senior Zoe Perles was named one of eight distinguished finalists in the 2018 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards in New York. This program is the nation’s largest youthrecognition program that is based on volunteer and community service alone. Perles, raised in a home where serving the community and the less

fortunate was a regular occurrence, has been committed to helping others for more than 13 years. Perles co-founded an annual Halloween bake sale that raises money for the food pantry at First Presbyterian Church in Northport. “I was exposed to the ideas of poverty and hardship at young age,” said Perles, “and it helped

me recognize other people’s plights as my own. Since then, I never wanted to stop helping others.” Since the fundraiser’s creation over ten years ago, approximately $12,000 has been raised and donated to the food pantry. Perles now publicizes the sale through media and community outreach, and leads more than 30 student volunteers each year. Although headed to college in the fall, she would like to stay close enough to home that traveling back to help with the fundraiser will still be possible. For decades, people have done what they can to avoid these unseemly organisms, thinking that exposure to germs is the single-best way to get and remain sick. Certainly, there are germs that a person would be wise to avoid. However, not all germs must be avoided. Germs are tiny organisms that can enter the body through open cuts, the mouth, the nose and the eyes. Germs are found all over the world. The four main types of germs include bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. Bacteria are a type of germ that often get a bad rap but actually may have beneﬁts that outweigh their negatives.

People frequently overlook good bacteria in an effort to eradicate bad bacteria, and that can have serious detriments. The CDC says each year in the United States at least two million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics — with at least 23,000 people dying as a result of these infections. Various medical sources urge that regular handwashing with plain soap is enough for cleansing. Consuming foods with naturally occurring helpful organisms, such as yogurt, chocolate, feta cheese, pickles and dark chocolate, can help increase the levels of good bacteria in the body. Taking a probiotic supplement also may help, although researchers at the Cleveland Clinic report that there is not enough proof to say for sure. People should speak with their doctors before taking probiotics or other steps to increase bacteria to make sure they are a wise decision for each individual.

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute says PAD occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to the limbs, head and organs, contributing to atherosclerosis, or a hardening of the arteries. Blocked blood ﬂow and eventual limited oxygen supply to these areas can cause pain and numbness. When severe enough, PAD may lead to tissue death. Discomfort due to PAD usually occurs when a person is walking or exercising, because the muscles are not getting enough blood during these activities to meet their needs, says the American Heart Association. Those with diabetes may confuse pain with neuropathy, and the elderly may think pain from PAD is a normal sign of aging and stiffness.

According to new research published by the American Heart Association, eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing PAD, which affects an estimated 8.5 million people

in the United States alone. Researchers examined dietary data from roughly 3.7 million men and women, with an average age of 65. Approximately 6.3 percent of the subjects had PAD, and 29.2 percent indicated they ate three or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The discovery was those who reported eating three or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower risk of PAD than those who reported eating less of these foods. The association between fruit and vegetable consumption and lower PAD risk remained even after accounting for age, gender, race, smoking status and various cardiovascular risk factors. Saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium can contribute to the formation of plaques that lead to PAD. Replacing these foods with more vegetables and fruits that are naturally lower in saturated fats can help, as can increasing dietary ﬁber consumption. One way to incorporate these types of foods is to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which offers high proportions of legumes, fruits, vegetables; moderate amounts of ﬁsh and dairy; and limited meat and meat products. Peripheral artery disease can be a warning sign of cardiovascular trouble. Altering one’s diet may help naturally prevent or treat this condition.

Unfortunately, when colds or the flu strike, sinuses may become one of the first spots affected by these illnesses.

The Mayo Clinic says CBT talk therapy is performed in a structured setting, with a limited number of sessions. CBT identiﬁes negative thinking so that challenging situations can be viewed more clearly and perceptions changed. While it is a tool in treating mental health disorders, anyone can beneﬁt from CBT, especially those looking to cope with stress or other hurdles.

Mental health is not something people may feel comfortable discussing. Problems may go untreated for years, and some individuals may use selfmedicating behaviors such as drinking alcohol or using illegal drugs to alleviate their symptoms. Others continue to persist with illnesses when they do not have to. Cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the more successful methods to address mental health issues.

Cognitive behavioral therapy was developed by psychiatrist Aaron Beck in the 1960s. Beck was doing psychoanalysis at the time and discovered there was a link between thoughts and feelings. Beck discovered people weren’t always aware of automatic thoughts that popped up in their minds, particularly those negative in nature. By identifying these thoughts, a client could overcome certain difﬁculties.

The National Association of CognitiveBehavioral Therapists deﬁnes CBT as a general term for a classiﬁcation of therapies with certain similarities. It does not exist as a distinct therapeutic technique. CBT is a short-term, goaloriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a practical form to problem-solving, advises Psych Central. The power is in the hands of the person engaging in the therapy. The therapist simply provides the ideas to get started. CBT is used to treat a wide range of issues, including insomnia, anxiety, depression, alcohol abuse, relationship problems and more. The process involves

Get adequate sleep. Getting enough sleep provides recovery time. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that adults between the ages of 18 and 64 years of age get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. The NSF recommends adults 65 and older get between seven and eight hours of sleep per night..

Don’t overdo it. Pushing a body too hard increases a person’s risk of injury or illness. Muscles that are overtaxed will very likely begin to feel a type of pain known as delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS. The American College of Sports Medicine notes that any type of activity that places unaccustomed loads on muscle may lead to DOMS, but activities such as strength training exercises, walking down hills, jogging, step aerobics and jumping are known examples of contributors to DOMS. Such activities should not necessarily be avoided, but it’s important that men and women not push themselves to the point of overexertion when performing them. Stay hydrated. Muscle soreness may appear if men and women are not drinking enough water before, during or after their workouts. A dehydrated body’s muscles do not have enough electrolytes, and that can be contributing to the feelings of soreness some exercise enthusiasts feel. Drink lots of water throughout the day, and don’t forget to bring a water bottle along to the gym when working out. Muscle soreness can be painful and difﬁcult to deal with. But the solution to address such soreness is oftentimes very simple.

On February 7th, the Elwood-John H. Glenn High School mock trial team ranked first among 27 competing Suffolk County schools in the county’s first mock trial competition of 2018 - a first ever in John Glenn history. Before the start of the season, two alumni mock trial members visited the team and volunteered their time to help students

prepare for upcoming trial cases. Jordan Bryan, a freshman at Cornell University, and Casey Oualaalou, a freshman at Loyola University, spent many hours helping the young, inexperienced team research and prepare. Adviser Megan Gieser believes the extra help from the alumni students, along with the work ethic of the current team members,

paid off. “It really meant a lot to the current students to be mentored by experienced mock trial members,” said Ms. Gieser, “and the team members continue to impress me with their hard work and dedication - learning from their mistakes, and improving with every trial they complete.”

Elwood Middle School student Nicholas Mourelatos was recognized for an exceptional act of kindness by the board of education on February 15th. During the month of December, Nicholas took it upon himself to start a fundraiser for a fellow student who was absent from school due to a serious medical condition. Nicholas knew she must be struggling

Concerns Into Action being out of school for so long, away from her friends and teachers, and wanted to let her know she was not forgotten by her classmates. He expressed his concern to middle school principal Dr. Christina Sapienza, and she encouraged him to follow through with his idea. After the course of a week, Nicholas and his peers raised enough funds to buy her a present for the

holiday season. Nicholas made sure to personally deliver the gift himself. Dr. Sapienza addressed the board to recognize Nicholas for his act of kindness and compassion. “Nicholas, we’re so proud of you for turning your heartfelt concerns into action,” said Dr. Sapienza, “and you’ve acted as a true friend and role model for your peers.”
