Over 100 bowlers came out to support The Maurer Foundation’s 10th Annual Pink Bowl event, raising over $14,000 for breast health education. The event was held on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at Bowlmor Lanes in Melville. For the fifth year in a row, the Pink Bowl was sponsored by Sperry Associates Federal Credit Union based in Garden City Park. “We are grateful for the important work that the Maurer Foundation does across Long Island,” stated Kevin Healy, Sperry’s CEO. “Their mission of educating the community about breast cancer truly saves lives, and Sperry is proud to support such a good cause”. Twenty-six teams rose to the occasion, ready for an exciting Sunday afternoon of friendly competition on the lanes. First place honors went to Sperry’s team “Branch Out” for the highest team score. Dan Tinucci from Charles Schwab won the Best Male Bowler award with an impressive score of 225. Best Female Bowler went to Joanna Jensen from Nawrocki Smith, with a score of 187. If you work or volunteer at a shelter and have a special dog that you believe would be a good match for a Veteran in need, you can submit a short video and biography of the dog to Paws of War through their website! They will then consider your rescued dog for their program once they have received all the information you can provide. All dogs that will be considered must be rescued/ shelter dogs, social, healthy, eager to please, good with other dogs and good with people.
You can also donate to Paws of War to help them carry out their mission. Individuals can donate on their website or by mail. There is truly no donation amount that is too small. They would not be able to carry out their mission of helping both ends of the leash without the generosity of their supporters. All donations are taxdeductible.
This organization relies heavily on devoted volunteers to continue providing their services. With such a small staff, Paws of War depends on the generosity of volunteers to support their fundraising efforts, to provide support to veterans and to help out with their dogs. Harborfields High School senior Albert Zhang, named a National Merit Semifinalist this past fall, was just named a finalist in the program. This prestigious program seeks to honor the nation’s

Harborfields Robotics Team one of the club’s three teams comprised of upperclassmen, won the third qualifier January 13th advancing them to the Long Island championship in March. The upperclassmen team also won the “Control Award,” which recognizes a team that successfully uses software and sensors to enhance robot performance. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an organization whose mission is to inspire students’ interest and participation in science and technology by holding regional, state and nationwide robotics competitions. At its February 7th meeting, the Elwood Union Free School District’s Board of Education and administration honored six of the district’s top athletes for their outstanding individual achievements
this year. Athletic Director David Shanahan introduced each of the student-athletes from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School and spoke briefly about each of their accomplishments.

During the week of February 11th, students at Washington Drive in the Harborfields Central School District celebrated Healthy Heart Month and participated in the nationwide Jump for Heart program. During the week, students learned about the importance of being heart healthy and enjoyed
jumping stations during their physical education classes. Students hopscotched, jump-roped and leaped their way through each class. Additionally, the school participated in a voluntary fundraiser for the American Heart Association, raising approximately $2,000. “Telling the students that they had the ability to make

The Right Foods Can Fight Inflammation T he human body and its immune system excels at fighting foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses. Signaling chemicals called interleukins tell cells whether they are needed to fight illness or they should wait in the wings. While these immune defenders are doing their jobs, soreness, fatigue and swelling can occur — the natural side effects of an immune system response — but will soon dissipate.
However, many people deal with immune systems that are consistently revved up, even when no invaders are present. This is the problem with many chronic diseases and immune system dysfunction. Unfortunately, the inflammation that is a hallmark of immune defense becomes a daily problem that may result in chronic pain and other complications. What many people may not realize is that the foods that they are putting into their bodies may exacerbate inflammatory responses, while others may help keep inflammation at bay. People with rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, Hashimoto’s, and other chronic illnesses may find that turning to the right diet can tame inflammation and other symptoms. Recently, many health experts, including Dr. Barry Sears, founder of the Inflammation and Research
Foundation and author of the “Zone Diet,” and Dr. Andrew Weil, who offers the AntiInflammatory Food Pyramid, have begun to tout certain foods that are purported to reduce inflammatory response over an extended period of time.
As beneficial as some foods can be, it’s important to note that individuals are unique and certain foods may produce a particular response in some but not in others. Systematically isolating certain foods can help paint a picture of foods that can be problematic. But generally speaking, refined carbohydrates, sugar-sweetened beverages, fried foods, and processed meats may increase inflammation, advises Harvard Health Publishing. Conversely, certain foods and beverages that have been identified as reducing inflammation for many people. These include: tomatoes, olive oil, green leafy vegetables and cruciferous vegetables; nuts, like almonds and walnuts; fatty fish, berries, avocados, green tea, peppers, grapes, turmeric and dark chocolate. Including these foods in one’s daily diet may help to relieve the pain, bloating and fatigue associated with inflammation. It is important to speak with a doctor before
making any significant dietary changes. Discuss any inflammation issues you have been having and which foods might help. Generally speaking, a diet full of diverse, antioxidant-rich foods can provide relief for those with various levels of inflammation.

eart disease is a formidable foe. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease accounts for nearly 25 percent of all deaths in the United States each year.
Such statistics are disconcerting, but they can serve as a wake-up call that compels people to prioritize their heart health. Fortunately, heart disease is often preventable, and people can employ various strategies to reduce their risk. If you smoke, stop smoking right now. One of the best things to do to protect the heart is to stop smoking. The Heart Foundation indicates that smoking reduces oxygen in the blood and damages blood vessel walls. The WHO notes that depression is a byproduct of a complex interaction of social, psychological and biological factors. Exposure to adverse life events, such as unemployment, the death of a loved one or psychological trauma, can increase peoples’ risk of developing depression.

Explore Benefits of HIIT Fitness T here are new workout programs popping up in fitness centers around the U.S. that are allowing fitness-minded individuals to test their mettle. Recently, one of the more popular fitness regimens is HIIT, and it’s probably available at a fitness center near you.
HIIT is an acronym for High Intensity Interval Training. The American College of Sports Medicine says HIIT held steady among the top fitness trends for 2017 and 2018. The crux of HIIT workout routines are sustained, intense exercise followed by active recovery periods. WebMD says that HIIT can be used with any type of popular cardio workout, including rowing, jumping rope, speed walking, stair climbing, and more. Many gyms also build programs around HIIT that may include “boot camp” type workouts that utilize equipment or exercises using people’s own body weight to burn calories. A typical HIIT training session lasts about 30 minutes. Workouts are performed at 80 to 90 percent of a person’s maximal heart rate, which is the number of times the heart will beat in a minute without overexerting itself. Recovery periods are not entirely rest. They tend to be shorter than active periods, and come in at around 40 to 50 percent of the maximal heart rate.
In essence, a lower intensity workout as “rest.” The workout will alternate between the working and recovery periods.
HIIT workouts can be effective at boosting your metabolism and helping people burn calories faster. They also help to develop physical endurance. The science behind the workouts has to do with EPOC, or excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. The fitness lifestyle resource Daily Burn says that HIIT will help burn more fat and calories than regular steady workouts because EPOC\0x2008 is an oxygen shortage in the body that occurs during the intense portions of the HIIT workouts.
During recovery, the body will ask for more oxygen, creating an after burn and a metabolic disturbance. The fitness guide, Fitness Blender, states that the intense training will result in the body burning calories at a higher rate for up to 48 to 72 hours after exercising. This means that the benefits of HIIT training continue even while you are, say, relaxing on the couch watching your favorite Netflix show later on that day. This type of workout regimen is especially good for those in relatively good shape, who need to drop a large amount of weight relatively quickly. For example, a new mother looking to drop

any adults lament that even if they were solid sleepers in their younger years, by the age of 50, their quality of sleep has unraveled. Some cling to the wisdom that people simply do not need as much sleep as they get older. Even though that is partly true, sufficient sleep is still a vital component of a healthy life.
The National Sleep Foundation recently updated its sleep recommendations per age group to include categories “may be appropriate” and “not recommended.” This includes a range of hours that may be adequate for certain adults. Adults between the ages of 26 and 65 are advised to get seven to nine hours of sleep per evening. However, six hours or 10 hours also may be acceptable. People over the age of 65 need roughly seven to eight hours of sleep each night, though between five and six hours also may be fine. Generally speaking, anything under five hours is not recommended based on data reviewed by sleep experts. Many older adults do not get enough sleep due to insomnia, states Jack Gardner, MD, a neurologist certified in sleep medicine. They’re concerned about health issues, may have sleep apnea, can experience pain or frequent urination, or may be taking medication that impedes sleep. Dr. Leila Kheirandish-Gozal, director of clinical sleep research at the University of Chicago, says that, over time, insufficient sleep can impact metabolism, mood, memory, and heart function. Various strategies can help people get more sleep and enjoy better sleep quality.

In response to the cold winter weather and a desire to give back to those in need, the Northport Middle School Community Service Club spent the afternoon of February 13th making fleece blankets for local homeless and pet shelters. Thanks to the coordination of fleece blanket donations by sixthgrade teacher Ms. Jen
Petrie, groups of students gathered together after school to learn how to cut and tie the fleece blankets with club adviser Mrs. Linda Dillon. Each group was given the materials to make one to two blankets. “It’s been such a cold winter, and it means a lot to know that our efforts will be keeping some people and animals, warm,” said Makayla, one of the club’s
regular members. “This club something fun to do after school, but it’s also something that actually helps others,” said other club member Patrick, a sixth-grader at Northport Middle School. All completed blankets will be donated to Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative and the Little Shelter Animal Rescue in Huntington.

Remove swiss cheese covered bread and plate the slices, with each slice facing up. Spread one or two tablespoons of Thousand Island Dressing onto each slice. Scoop sauerkraut onto each slice above dressing. Lastly, scoop drained veggie mixture onto bread and close sandwich.
Preparation Combine diced portobello mushrooms, spinach leaves and sliced onion into a frying pan that has 1/4 cup water at the bottom. Trun on high until stove gets going. Then reduce heat to low

Students For 60,000 The Students for 60,000 club at Northport High School, which is dedicated to helping the homeless, is preparing to take its first service trip to West Virginia to work in some of the most impoverished, opioid-stricken communities in the United States. Before leaving for the trip during February break, students attended the County Executive’s forum on the opioid epidemic. Additionally, the club presented the work they have been doing for the homeless, as well as what they will be doing on their service trip. Students for 60,000 began in 1987 as a school club dedicated to assisting the homeless. The name of the club comes from the approximate number of 60,000 homeless in New York City at the time.
