model, leader or volunteer, here’s an opportunity for you to give them the acknowledgment they deserve. Random Thoughts By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As if navigating the roads this winter wasn’t hazardous enough with the snow and ice and freezing rain, we now have a new obstacle to contend with – the vast wasteland of potholes cropping up on every corner and parkway ramp. Try attempting to slow down as your headlights catch a glimpse of the crater before you, just waiting to devour a tire or two. One more time – is it spring yet? At least spring training has finally arrived, and with it the not entirely unexpected announcement

from Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter that this season will be his final year playing baseball. A class act until the end, Jeter took to his Facebook page to write a heartfelt message of thanks and appreciation to his fans, his teammates, his family and friends. He will leave the Yankees at the top of his game, a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer with a legacy the likes of which will not be seen again. Speaking of, remember all those long lost friends you thought you would never see again? Well, thanks to social networking, virtual reunions have become fairly

common. Sure, there’s plenty of useless material to navigate through; but if you learn to utilize these sites properly, the odds of reconnecting with someone are pretty likely. Everything in moderation, right? That’s the mentality you need to adopt for spring – moderation – with diet, exercise, everything. Those bathing suits that have been cropping up in every department store? They’re not going away anytime soon. Better crawl out of that winter state of hibernation and greet the brand new season right around the corner… it’s just over the horizon, past the potholes.

Students of ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School captivated a packed auditorium with performances of Footloose the musical. Directed by Maria Aiello and choreographed by Assistant Director Angela Aiello, the cast members worked tirelessly to ensure that this year’s production

Potato Olympics While American athletes are competing in Sochi, the third-grade students of James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District competed locally in the 4th Annual Potato Olympics. Prior to the opening ceremonies, the children in Liz Held’s and Beth Noon’s classes

studied the Olympic games in their classrooms. They read and took notes about the various components of the Olympics including the athletes, symbols and events. The students decorated a potato to resemble a Potato Olympian who they named and wrote about. Working cooperatively in teams,

the students coached their Olympians through several activities that were designed to sharpen measurement skills, such as estimating, measuring to the nearest inch and ½ inch, graphing and telling time. The Olympic events included potato bowling, skating, curling, skiing,

and the slalom. In addition, the children also participated in the “Great Potato Weigh-In” and a potato chip taste test. Medals were awarded at the closing ceremonies to each Olympian. As a culminating activity, the children wrote newspaper articles highlighting the events.

ST. JOHN’S SPORTS - Patients in St. Johnland Nursing Center’s Head Injury Rehabilitation

Unit celebrated the start of the 2014 Olympic Games with their own version of many popular sporting events. Divided into two teams, they competed in adapted indoor sports including cross country skiing, ice hockey, speed skating and snowboarding. The participants, many of whom are recovering from a traumatic brain injury, were excited to be part of the Olympic spirit. Everyone was a medalist at the award ceremony!

Factors include the finalist’s academic record, information about the school’s curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, the high school official’s written recommendation, and information about the student’s activities and leadership, as well as an essay written by the finalist. Earning the title of Merit Scholar is an honor that will be bestowed upon more than half of the students who achieve finalist standing.

“I’m very proud to be named a National Merit Finalist,” said Keith. “I’ve worked very hard throughout high school, and it’s nice to be recognized for that. It’s an honor, and my academic drive comes from my parents, who have both pushed me to succeed and supported me over the years.” The district congratulates Keith on this accomplishment and wishes him the best of luck as he continues on the path toward becoming a Merit Scholar.

The Lions Eye Bank for Long Island will be offering free eye donation educational sessions throughout the month of March in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, the North Shore-LIJ Health System announced recently. March is the 31st Annual National Eye Donor Awareness month. Since 1961, more than one million adults and children have had their sight restored as a result of eye donations, according to the Eye Bank Association of America. The Lions Eye Bank for Long Island, which is located at Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream and serves the New York metropolitan area, has provided the gift of sight to more than 12,650 people since its inception in 1986. “We hope during these educational programs to explain how eye donations work and debunk some of the myths surrounding

In celebration of 35 years of service to the community in providing diabetes education and support to individuals with diabetes and their families, Winthrop-University Hospital’s Diabetes Education Center will host an interactive night of food, fun and fine dining with Celebrity Chef Tom Schaudel. The event, which will feature a cooking demonstration along with a delicious three-course meal, will take place on Monday, March 10th, at 6:30 p.m. at Jewel, located in The Atrium Room, at 400 Broadhollow Rd. in Melville. “Thirty-five years of service to our community is certainly a momentous milestone for Winthrop’s Diabetes Education Center,” said Lynne Chimon, MS, RD, BCADM, CDN, CDE, Director of Winthrop’s Diabetes Education Center. “We are pleased to partner with Chef Tom Schaudel on what is promised to be an enjoyable and informative event for all those living with diabetes, their friends and loved ones.” The cost for the event is $40 per person.
