Luncheon a Success A crowd of over 800 Long Islanders attended the 15th Annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon on Wednesday, February 11th, 2016. The sea of red could be seen throughout all the rooms at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. This year’s honorees included Linda Ressa, Sales Manager, New Construction Specialist, Wells Fargo Home Mortgage and Community Honoree-Premiere Cardiology. Those in attendance also heard from heart and stroke survivors Julie Lycksell, Robin Musmanno and Nancy Magrini-Cavallone. These women’ stories were an inspiration to everyone in the crowd. “Being a part of this event from start to almost finish was an amazing experience” said Michelle Schmitt, Partner in the Real Estate Group at Certilman Balin Adler & Hyman, LLP. who chaired this years’ event but was unable to attend because of the birth of her twin sons the week before. Leeana Karlson, Co-host of the Morning Show with Steve & Leeana on K98.3 did an amazing job as event emcee. The American Heart Association’s 15th Annual Go Red For Women Luncheon combined an elegant luncheon reception, incredible auction and networking opportunities. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In all the hype over our dear Buddy the Betta’s first birthday last week, another momentous occasion got lost in the shuffle – my opportunity to attend an intimate Q&A with Billy Joel at my alma mater, C.W. Post. It was designed to give the students of the Long Island High School for the Arts an opportunity to learn from the master, one who happened to make a rather sizable donation to their school in an effort to keep it up and running for the next generation of promising performing artists. Of course, officially, I was “covering” this event in my capacity as a journalist; however, the opportunity
to be a part of such a small audience in front of one of my idols had its own unique appeal on a personal level – at the very institution where I obtained my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree over a decade ago. While not a full-fledged concert by any means, there was “a little music” to go along with the anecdotes, making for an afternoon of memories to last a lifetime. In the weeks since, I had occasion to peruse my college portfolio, where I came across an essay I had written on the hopes and aspirations I had for my career. “Countdown to Commencement,” it was called, covering everything from grad school to loans to the job search to that endless search for fulfillment.
As much as anyone thinks he/she has life all mapped out, it is nearly impossible to rely on a set blueprint. Because, every now and then, life itself beckons, with all its unanticipated twists and turns. Such was my sentiment in the Spring of 2004, and so it remains. If you had told me 12 years ago that I would be back in the Tilles Center theatre, as an editor and columnist, mere feet away from the likes of Billy Joel… well that would have fallen under the “unanticipated” category for sure. I can only imagine the thrill it was for those high school students, those with the world at their feet, endless opportunities stretched before them. Oh, to have that feeling once again…

Help Kids Feel Comfortable at the Dentist
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child go to the dentist by age 1, or within six months of the eruption of his or her first tooth. Parents worried about how their kids will respond to the dentist can take the following steps to acclimate kids to dental visits to make them more comfortable during their appointments now and down the road: Be a positive role model. Children frequently learn by example. If they see their parents being diligent about dental care, they’re more likely to embrace proper oral hygiene. Bring children to your own dental appointments so they understand the process and become familiar with the type of equipment used. Routine dental examinations and cleanings are an important component of oral healthcare for both children and adults. However, many children do not visit the dentist until well after the time recommended by medical and dental professionals.
Stick to the first-tooth milestone. Take your child to the dentist on or about when his or her first tooth erupts. Early dental visits will get kids used to going to the dentist and prevent minor problems that may lead to more complex
dental issues. Read books about the dentist and role play. Information can allay kids’ fears about the dentist. Read books together about dental visits and act out possible scenarios with your kids. Give kids toy dental health tools and have them practice exams on you and vice-versa. Be supportive and instill trust. Avoid telling your child that everything will be okay. If a procedure is needed, this could affect his or her trust in you and make the dental office an even greater source of anxiety. Simply be supportive and offer a hand to squeeze or a hug if your child needs you. Consider using your dentist. Some parents like to take their children to a pediatric dentist, but it may not always be necessary. Many family practices cater to patients of all ages, and the familiarity of the office may help make children feel more comfortable. Speak with your dentist about the ages they see. Steer clear of negative words. Michael J. Hanna, DMD, a national spokesperson for the AAPD, suggests using positive phrases like “clean, strong, healthy teeth” to make the visit seem fun and positive rather than scary and alarming. Let the office staff come up with their own words to describe processes that won’t seem too frightening. By employing these techniques, kids’ dental visits can be more pleasant for all involved, paving the way for a lifetime of healthy teeth.

Soup-er Fundraiser During the week prior to the National Football League’s Super Bowl 50 Game, Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District held its second annual “Soup-er Bowl Food Drive.” Coordinated by the school’s Acts of Kindness Committee, students, faculty and staff donated cans of soup and other canned goods while voting for the team they thought would win the 2016 Super
Bowl. Students who contributed to the food drive placed their cans in bins representing the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers. Through their collaborative efforts, the school collected a total of 264 cans, which were donated to the Harborfields Alliance For Community Outreach program and the food pantry at Washington Drive. In a close finish, 136 cans were collected for the Denver Broncos and the
Carolina Panthers ended up with 128 cans. “The students were really involved and were motivated to donate cans to vote for their favorite team,” said Acts of Kindness Committee Cochair Jennifer Pennisi. HONORED FOR SERVICE - The Chiefs of the Eaton’s Neck Fire Department recently presented a plaque to longtime volunteer firefighter Roy Beach, age 89, in recognition for over 50 years of dedicated service to the district and department from the Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York. Beach served in World War II and took part in the Normandy invasion on D-Day. He has been a member of the Eaton’s Neck Fire Department for 43 years, where he served for 30 years as Fire Commissioner. Before joining Eaton’s Neck, Beach served for 20 years in the Levittown Fire Department, and has a combined total of 63 years of service to the community. Merit Finalist Named
Mourning a Loss Melville Fire Department in September of 1962 and remained an active member for 53 years. He actively responded to 500 alarms per year and was honored many times as Company Member of the Year, and in 2001 he was honored as the Department Member of the Year. Earley wore many hats in the fire service. He was the Melville Rescue Squad Captain from 1966-1967, and was one of the squad’s first Cardiac Emergency Technicians. He was the Senior Fire Inspector for the Melville Fire District from 1969-1981. Then in 1982, Earley became the Chief Fire Inspector for the Town of Huntington until his retirement in 1990. Earley also served as Melville Fire Police Lieutenant and Captain from 1994-2012. The Melville Fire Department recently mourned the loss of ExCaptain Robert Earley, Sr., 88, a dedicated and well-respected member of the department for 53 years who passed away on January 29th, 2016. In June of 1932 when Robert was four years-old, his father William retired from the NYPD. The family moved to Montague, NJ, where he started school in 1933 attending a oneroom schoolhouse that contained eight classes, all taught by one teacher. In 1937, the family returned to Brooklyn where Earley attended St. Francis of Assisi Elementary School. Earley attended James Madison High School
until he left school despite his family’s wishes and joined the U.S. Merchant Marines, where he served on different ships until 1950. During this time his cousin asked Bob to be his best man at his wedding, where he met Terry Troy who was the maid of honor. The rest was inevitable… Bob and Terry married in 1951 and moved to Melville in 1954, where they bought their house on Bainbridge Avenue. Bob and Terry had two sons, William and Robert Jr., and both his wife Terry and son Robert Jr. predeceased him. Bob was an eight o’clock usher at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church for many years, and was active in the Boy Scouts of America as an Assistant Scoutmaster. Earley was Irishman of the year in 2007 and was an aide to the Grand Marshal of the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade. He was instrumental in saving St. Bridget’s, the first church built by the Irish and raised over 20 million dollars. Earley joined the

In recognition of the school’s Anti-Violence Day theme “keep calm and pay it forward,” students at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District participated in a PTAsponsored assembly entitled, “Cultivating Kindness.” Led by author and founder of the ReesSpecht Life Foundation Richard Specht, students heard an important message about community, compassion
and respect. Through the tragic loss of his son, Specht founded the organization in his memory with the goal of making a difference in the world through acts of kindness. During the assembly, students learned about the meaning of the phrase “paying it forward” through examples and stories. In an effort to encourage students to pay it forward, each student received a “pay it forward card” to hand out when they

perform a random act of kindness. The card serves as a symbol of kindness with the hope that a chain reaction will ensue. Following the assembly, students were tasked with capturing examples of people paying it forward through artistic mediums such as a collage, writing a poem, a photograph, art piece, song or essay. Students will submit the assignment to their English teachers by the end of February.

In honor of Black History Month, Harborfields Central School District students, administrators, teachers and Board of Education members recently gathered for a “Legacy of Strength, A Future of Hope” celebration at Oldfield Middle School. The annual Black History Celebration featured a keynote address by Town of Huntington Councilwoman Tracey Edwards, as well as a
welcoming address by Superintendent of Schools Diana Todaro. During their remarks, both speakers encouraged all in attendance to celebrate the differences that exist within the world. Ms. Edwards also urged students to journal the aspirations they have for their futures in a complementary notebook she provided. Throughout the remainder of the evening, students representing Harborfields High

Healthy Habits to Combat Stress
Few adults can imagine a life that does not include financial- or work-related stress. But there are ways to combat stress that can benefit people’s longterm health and improve their presentday quality of life.
Stress has an immediate and potentially long-term effect on the human body. Though it’s a natural response to both good and bad experiences, stress, when chronic, can produce a host of negative consequences that greatly diminish one’s quality of life. Combatting stress can sometimes be difficult, as the causes of stress are never too far away for many adults. In its 2015 “Stress in AmericaTM: Paying With Our Health” survey, the American Psychological Association found that money is the top cause of stress for Americans. The survey was conducted on behalf of the APA by Harris Poll, which

As part of their physical education unit, ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School students demonstrated their knowledge of CPR through a hands-on simulation experience. During the weeklong study unit, students participated in group discussions and learned about CPR protocols and procedures. Physical education teacher Dave Shanahan led students through a step-by-step
demonstration on how to respond when they witness a person in a cardiac emergency. Working in groups of three or four, students exhibited the proper form for administering chest compressions as well as checking a person’s airway on “Anne” manikins. As per the new New York State requirement, high school seniors must be taught hands-only CPR. Beginning next year,
