Elwood-John H. Glenn High School junior Gina Maletta has recently been selected as a National Youth Delegate for the 2017 Washington Youth Summit on the Environment at George Mason University this upcoming summer. Gina is one out of only 250 students from across the country that have been asked to participate in the intensive week-long program on environmental science leadership and conservation. To be chosen for the summit, a student must hold strong academic achievements, as well as demonstrate interest and excellent leadership skills in science and conservation studies. Gina was nominated by her science teacher Maria Aiello based these skills. The Washington Youth Summit on the Environment will be held from June 25th-30th and include distinguished faculty members, guest speakers and access to elite D.C. practitioners. The leadership conference was created to encourage and grow future leaders in the field of environmental studies and conservation in the 21st century. “It’s pretty cool to be selected for this,” said Gina. “I like the environment so it’s exciting because it really fits my interest.”

And just like that, the snow has melted and signs of spring have begun to sprout here and there, signaling the end of hibernation and the beginning of so many wonderful things in this second season of the year. Of course, we are not completely out of the frozen woods yet; but it certainly is nice to feel the warmth of the sun in the month of February nonetheless. Last year, March brought with it a robin’s nest, complete with four perfect blue eggs, to my grandparents’ house. I often wonder if one of the babies will return this spring to lay its own batch of eggs and continue the line of fuzzy birds born in that backyard. So many wonderful memories took place in that very spot… how fitting that new life

should be born there as well. I recently picked up a bunch of tulips and roses while shopping, deciding that the post-holiday season barrenness of my apartment could use a little splash of color to liven things up. It’s amazing what a bowl of flowers can do to improve the atmosphere of a room… how I do love to snip and arrange fresh blooms in vases on occasion. It’s times like these that I wish I had a real garden of my own to tend; but alas, decks are really only conducive to the standard potted plant. I am certainly looking forward to heading out this spring and exploring the beaches and parks of Long Island as they come back to life. Aside from the exercise these random, meandering strolls encourage, they

also give me the alwayswelcome opportunity to continue to explore my love of photography. It doesn’t matter how many times I have visited a particular place; there is always a new angle to be found, another pretty sight to document. In about a month’s time, my hope is to have my new website up and ready to launch, featuring some of these scenic snapshots from the last several years, perhaps with some prints and calendars available for purchase. In the interim, I have created a public Instagram account, so please feel free to “follow” me @jlynnspj, take a look around and stay tuned for the official launch of my site, www. SnapshotsAndSilhouettes.com. Springtime is the season of beginnings – no harm in getting a head start!

Knights of the Month Three students from Harley Avenue Primary School were named February’s Knights of the Month on February 3rd during a school-wide pep rally. Kindergartner Fatima Aguilar, first-grader Gia Sofield and second-

grader Kaylee Mossey were awarded the title for their ability to showcase great character. The three girls received t-shirts during the pep rally where Principal Elissa Millan and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth

Bossert congratulated them. With the help of music teacher Mrs. Long, the girls took the stage to lead their classmates in The Pledge of Allegiance and the Harley Promise.

Orchestra Students Shine Eight music students from the Elwood Union Free School District recently participated in the Long Island String Festival Association (LISFA) Suffolk County intermediate and secondary festivals. The competitive all-county music festivals select orchestra students with both strong NYSSMA achievements and music teacher recommendations to perform challenging music in a high level ensemble. Representing James H. Boyd Intermediate School and Elwood Middle School

at the intermediate level were fifth-graders Jenna Ban (violin) and Angelina Song (cello), sixth-grader Giuliana Brown (violin), seventh-grader Maya Tallo (violin) and eighth-graders Ryan Kang (cello) and Rithika Narayan (viola). Tenth-grader Elizabeth Choi (violin) and 11thgrader Emma Mayette (viola) represented ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School at the secondary level. “It’s fun to play with people from other schools,” said Emma. “We were also able to see some old friends which was great.”

Students were recommended by their orchestra teachers Diana Gotzen-Berg from James H. Boyd Intermediate School and Elwood Middle School and Karen Gellert from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School. “Mrs. Gellert and I are so proud of our students that represented Elwood,” said Mrs. Gotzen-Berg. “The experience was extremely rewarding for our students and their hard work and dedication to their instrument showed.”

Superior Scientists Elwood-John H. Glenn High School juniors and seniors in Maria Aiello and Jennifer Basford’s Advanced Placement Environmental Science classes took part in a unique lab experience with science educator Amanda Horn from Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) on February 13th. BNL provided students with lab attire and equipment to successfully take part in a citric acid soil remediation lab. This is the second year that Brookhaven National

Labs has visited the high school to educate science students. “We invite Brookhaven National Labs to the high school to expose our students to careers in the sciences on Long Island, while also supplementing our curriculum,” said Director of Math, Science and Technology Eileen Kelly-Gorman. “In this lab, students used a technique designed at BNL, right here on Long Island, to remove pollutant metals from soil.” Students worked with

a number of solutions which they used test tubes to differentiate and experiment with. With the help of their classmates, students followed scientific steps to quantify the amount of iron present in the soil, using the 1,10-phenanthroline method. At the conclusion of the lab, Ms. Horn graphed the classroom results and helped students determine their concentration levels based on the numbers recorded during the experiment.

The Huntington Town Board, at its February 7th meeting, approved the installation of public art on five additional signal boxes in Huntington Village, and authorized agreements with the state Department of Transportation to place them on boxes on Main Street (State Route 25A). The works were selected from 10 submissions reviewed by a panel and forwarded to the Town Board by the Public Art Advisory Committee. They are to be placed at five locations on Main Street, from Prospect Street (in front of the Huntington Public Library) to New York Avenue. The Huntington Village Business Improvement District has agreed to pay up to $1,700 per installation ($8,500 in total) for design and installation of the art on the boxes, which is part of the Town’s Public Art Initiative. The decorated signal boxes will join five others installed at other locations in Huntington Village in 2015. At the time, it was noted that in other areas around the country, art on traffic signal boxes has been effective in reducing graffiti. Seniors Sign On Three Northport High School student-athletes signed their national letter of intent on February 1st to play their sport of choice at the college level. Hands-On Historical Lesson To expand on their history curriculum, fourth-graders at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School received a hands on lesson about Native American Indian culture on February 8th. With the help of Journeys Into American Indian Territory, an organization

that has visited the school annually for approximately 20 years, students took part in a workshop that enabled them to walk through a model long house and interact with different artifacts. Presenters Maddi Cheers and Marianne Chasen answered questions and

showed students how to grind corn and play a handmade Indian drum. Classes also learned the roles that Native American men and women played and had the opportunity to try on their fashion for their classmates.

As part of their PARP (Parents As Reading Partners) celebration, Bellerose Avenue Elementary School students heard from children’s book author and illustrator Chris Soentpiet on February 8th. Spelling Success Fourth and fifth grade students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary showcased their spelling abilities at the school’s third annual spelling bee competition on January 6th. Fourth-grader Justin Lowenhar was crowned the winner and will move on to participate in the Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee at Hofstra University in February,

with the hopes of making it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Ten fourth-graders and 10 fifth-graders competed in the school competition after being named classroom winners. The students gathered on the stage in the school cafeteria as their classmates and teachers cheered them on. One by one the students approached the podium for a new word. The difficulty

of the words increased as the rounds continued. The final two students were Lowenhar and fifthgrader Aidan Saunders. Lowenhar was crowned the winner by spelling his final word, “tenaciously” correct. “It feels great,” he said. “I’ve watched the National Spelling Bee on TV since I was four or five years old. I’ve been dreaming about this.”

The Centerport Fire Department recently honored Ex-Chief William “Bill” Wamp for his 65 years of dedicated service. Wamp was presented with an engraved firefighter’s axe and an anniversary cake that was shared by the membership. Wamp joined the Centerport Fire Department in 1952 and was assigned to Engine Company Two. He served

as Company Lieutenant and Captain, and was later elected to Assistant Chief and then Chief of the Department in 1979 and 1981. Wamp was also a 20-year member of the Centerport Rescue Squad. Under Chief Wamp’s leadership, the Department battled a massive fire that destroyed Linck’s Log Cabin in 1981, a landmark restaurant for over 50 years that closed a year and a half

Over 100 Nassau BOCES Barry Tech students from the school’s Healthcare Classes came together recently for an anticyberbully workshop. Cyberbullying remains a hot topic since recent reports claim that 43% of teenagers have been bullied online over the past year. These statistics prompted students and staff to view the movie, Cyberbully, and reflect on how the issue effects them in their everyday digital lives. Students referred to a specially created Movie Viewing Guide as they watched the video, which was followed by a discussion led by the school’s social worker, Nancy Tuck. The students were given a list of resources and information was distributed about cyber bullying, its effects on others and what to do if you are a victim. “The film sparked conversation among our students,” said Barry Tech Assistant Principal Dr. William Poll. “Students

talked about ways to handle cyberbullying situations, while our Social Worker provided resources and strategies for this challenge that students face every day.” Barry Tech Physical Therapy Aide teacher Dr. Michelle Fattore was instrumental in bringing the program to the school. “I think it’s important to remind students of their responsibility when they post anything on the internet,” said Dr. Fattore. “They need to know the ramifications of posting negative comments, as well as the resources available to them if they become a victim of cyberbullying.” Dr. Poll opened the session by reminding the students that, “Barry Tech is a bully-free zone and the healthcare classes are passionate about stomping out bullying.” The workshop launched a school-wide campaign. Students left their colorful hand prints on banners to be displayed around the school stating their commitment to keeping

Barry Tech a bully-free zone. “Barry Tech is a safe environment where I feel safe and I can express myself,” said Barry Tech Physical Therapy Aide and Rehabilitation Medicine student Veronica Scruggs from the Bethpage UFSD. Fellow Barry Tech Physical Therapy Aide and Rehabilitation Medicine students agree: “Barry Tech is a bully-free zone, because you meet people you have never met before. This allows you to have a fresh start and create a new community for yourself,” said Samantha Zizzo, Bethpage UFSD. Anisha Sander, a Freeport UFSD student sums it up, “Without love, there is no family in Barry Tech. Wrestling Champions On February 12th, in his final wrestling tournament as a high school student, St. John the Baptist Senior Joe Lanciotti of Smithtown won first place at the NY Catholic High School Wrestling Championships, in Buffalo. Joe competed in the 138 lb division. In addition to his state title, Lanciotti took home two other top awards at the competition. Lanciotti was selected by all of the coaches present as the Most Outstanding

Wrestler in the State. He also received the Iron Man Award for placing in the top ten in New York State in each of his four years of competition. Overall, the SJB team had a very successful weekend at the state tournament. Francis Finn of West Islip placed third in his division, Joseph Vacca, Jr. of Amity Harbor finished fifth in his division, while Bryan Kuprian of East Northport and Alex Greco of Fort Salonga finished

sixth in their divisions, respectively. St. John the Baptist’s Boys Athletic Director, Mr. Ralph Dalton, stated “Although our team is small we have made a big impact in the Catholic League and Catholic States.
