Community Coalition Suffolk County Community College’s Michael J. Grant Campus Chemical Dependency Counseling (CDC) Program has launched a community coalition to reduce underage alcohol use, tobacco and other drug consumption on the campus as well as in the surrounding Brentwood community. The effort is being funded

by a $690,704, five-year, New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) - College Environmental Prevention Grant awarded to the college last year and unanimously adopted by the Suffolk County Legislature on February 6th. A newly formed campus community coalition is the driving force behind the

effort and will implement strategies to reduce availability and problems associated with drinking, substance misuse and abuse. Coalition members include representatives from various Suffolk County Community College departments as well as community members, including parents, teachers, law

enforcement, businesses, religious leaders, health providers and other community activists who are mobilizing at the local level to make their communities safer, healthier and drug-free. Prevention specialist and CDC Prevention Program Coordinator Kathleen Flynn-Bisson will spearhead the coalition’s efforts. FlynnBisson said the coalition will focus on: preventing access or the methods in which underage youth procure alcohol e.g., fake identification or third party transactions changing the campus community norms that promote underage drinking prevention and reduction of drug use including prescription misuse. Flynn-Bisson said one of the first actions of the group was an Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drug Survey to evaluate student’s concerns, attitudes and knowledge about drinking and drug use, their experience with individuals who have been drinking, and their own experiences with alcohol and other drugs. A random sample of Grant campus students were sent an email inviting them to participate in the survey that will be conducted three times over the next five years. The results of the survey will give the coalition a better understanding of current substance use issues and in turn will guide their prevention efforts.

This year’s event will take place on Wednesday, February 28th at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. The membership consists of nearly 15,000 professional women of color in 285 chapters located in 41 states, the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. The Fashion Foundation A Unique Boutique with a Selﬂess Cause Amanda Munz, founder of The Fashion Foundation, started a non-profit in 2014 to sell fashion apparel at a reasonable price and, more importantly, to help provide students with school supplies. As someone who has always loved fashion, Amanda decided to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising, she went on to receive a Master’s degree in Public Administration. While getting her feet wet in the fashion industry, she constantly took note of people throwing fashion apparel in the garbage, as well as samples building up that designers didn’t know what to do with. This inspired her to start The Fashion Foundation, where she utilizes those pieces by selling them at a reasonable price, and then pays it forward by using the profits earned to purchase school supplies for students to help them succeed. Today, Munz runs a showroom in Farmingdale, as well as a pop-up showroom in Manhattan, where new apparel can be purchased for a fraction of its retail cost. To this day, she has received thousands of pieces from fashion companies and helped countless students succeed. The Fashion Foundation has purchased clean uniforms, notebooks, art

supplies, athletic equipment, backpacks and more for students in New York. Amanda never just hands a school a check; instead, she orders the supplies, ships them to the school directly and is usually always there to hand-deliver them to the students herself. It’s apparent she truly loves what she does! Long Island Yarn Crawl After three successful years, 10 yarn shops from Port Washington to East Hampton will be participating in the fourth annual Long Island Yarn Crawl on April 19th – 22nd, 2018. Over the course of four days, yarn crafters - knitters, crocheters, weavers and spinners - are invited to participate in this selfguided tour of our Long Island yarn shops, which will have extended hours and specials throughout the weekend. Minimizing damage only goes so far. At a certain point, we all need to take the leap. We must choose to forge ahead, or fall behind. I don’t think anyone would prefer the latter. Close your eyes and jump. As the saying goes... Shoot for the moon... Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.

HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance

to succeed. Below, you will see a photo of Ian Mugambi, a 12 year-old boy in need of a sponsor. Ian lost his mother and sister and currently resides at this orphanage in Meru. For further details on mentoring Ian or another child, please contact Aida Mann at AidaMann@optonline.com. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and Aida often travel to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to come along so they can meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Growing up on Long Island, I realize it is easy to be misled into thinking everyone lives as we do, but that is not the case. Ian is much more than just someone in the photo on this page; he is one of many people across the world who is reaching out for help. Although there are plenty of ways we can spend $1 a day, using that money to mentor a child in need is truly a priceless experience!

Artists from Suffolk, Nassau, Brooklyn, and Queens are invited to submit applications to show their large works in the Art League’s spacious Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery. Collaborating to Create Fifth-grade students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District had the opportunity to be hands-on engineers using Tinkering Labs on February 8th. Tinkering Labs are individual kits that come with 10 basic engineering challenges, and more than 50 pieces that can be used to complete the challenges. The pieces include an

electronic motor, gears, safety goggles and more. These exercises help reinforce the principles of science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) with a fun and engaging twist. Students in Mrs. Janine Sena’s fifth-grade class were challenged to create a machine that could scramble an egg, and groups excitedly got started right away, bouncing ideas

off of one another. “There’s so much value in students truly collaborating and problem solving together,” said Mrs. Sena. “We give them virtually no direction, and when they finish the task, it’s all them. And they’re proud.” By the end of the session, every group had created a working machine, and the students were beaming with pride.

Culture of Inclusivity Along with more than 2,000 schools across the country, Elwood Middle School students celebrated No One Eats Alone Day on February 9th. During lunch periods throughout the day, members of the National Junior Honor Society and the Knights of Good brought awareness to social isolation. “Let’s create a culture of belonging for everyone,” student volunteers read aloud to their peers, “to not be the cool kids, but to be the kids who include everyone…let’s be

different Elwood and end social isolation now!” Students encouraged their peers to take part in the day by making sure no one was sitting alone, or by sitting with someone they’ve never sat with before. There were activities available for students to connect with new friends, including board games, a raffle and opportunities to affirm others that they’re not alone. “This day is so important because no school is without isolated kids,”

said Dahlia, a sixth-grader at Elwood Middle. “And just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there.” This day was created by Beyond Differences - a non-profit organization founded by the parents of Lili Smith, who was born with a cranial facial syndrome and was socially isolated during her middle school years. Their mission is to bring awareness to the harshness of social isolation, and are determined to teach students to be inclusive.

James Rooney of the Beaver Patrol was presented with his Wood Badge Beads, neckerchief, woggle and certificate in a special ceremony at the Matinecock District’s monthly Roundtable Meeting, held at Burr Intermediate School on February 8th. This recognition was

the culmination of a combination “learning/ hands-on applications” time management and Leadership training course that is available to its adult Scouting volunteer leaders by the Boy Scouts of America. Centerport resident Mr. Rooney, a retired U.S. Navy Captain, is

a scouting volunteer, serving as the Outdoor Activities Coordinator in Troop 113, as well as other district and Suffolk County Council, BSA positions. He participated in six days of outdoors sessions in Wood Badge Course #N2-386-16 for the group participation/ instructional section, held at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp in September 2016 and Schiff Scout Reservation in October 2016. In order to complete the training, the Scouting volunteer leaders had to apply what they learned in a variety of self-directed goals (the practical part of the course) within 18 months, which was accomplished in December 2017. This was the “Wood Badge for the 21st Century” - a new and updated Wood Badge Course, which was in place since 2001.

George O’Connor, author and illustrator of the New-York Times bestselling series “Olympians,” visited middle school students in the NorthportEast Northport School District on February 7th. O’Connor travels all over the world to speak with students about his books

and even pointed out a mistake on his first book’s final cover. “No piece of art is ever perfect,” O’Connor told the students, “so don’t you ever give up, just because something you’ve created is imperfect.” During his presentation, O’Connor also demonstrated a quick sketch of one of his characters that was clocked at 25 seconds by one of the students. “One of my favorite parts of these visits is watching the kids’ faces light up when they have this moment of understanding that they’re not the only ones who struggle with the creative process,” O’Connor said. “That they’re not the only ones who are afraid of messing up.”

Members of the community service club at Northport Middle School had some Valentine’s Day fun with members of the local senior residency, Atria of East Northport, on February 8th. During the event, students made valentines, had snacks and played board games with some of the residents. This event was planned mainly by the students.

“They came up with the idea to have this event, and they planned the whole thing,” said Danielle Cardinale, and one of the supervisors of community service club. “They even brought in the food themselves – they’re such sweet kids.” The community service club is made up of approximately 20 students that plan monthly

community outreach. The club puts on holiday fundraisers, participates in activities like community outreach and literacy events, and more. “I really love being a part of this club because doing nice things for people is just so fun,” said seventh grader Briana, “and I like getting to know people I wouldn’t normally get to spend time with.”

Future Educators At Northport-East Northport’s most recent Board of Education meeting, high school senior Brianna McQuade was recognized for being selected as the Family and Consumer Science Student of the Month. Brianna, a bright and hard-working young woman, has shown an inclination in the area of education, and has been an

active member of the high school’s Future Educators Association (FEA) since her freshman year. She now serves as the co-president of the association and helps organize many FEA activities to serve children and families in the local community. “Brianna has a unique manner of connecting with children,” said Assistant Principal Richard

At its annual Black History Month Celebration on February 8th, the Harborfields Central School District honored the Harlem Renaissance. Oldfield Middle School students Kyrah Mullings and Sarah Walker, together with teacher

Jeffrey Shade, acted as the masters of ceremonies for the evening, which included musical, artistic and spoken performances from students at each of the district’s schools. Black History Month-inspired student artwork was featured throughout the

On February 7th, eighth graders at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District participated in The Charity Challenge - a fundraising competition in which proceeds were donated to the charity organization myFace. Each year, eighthgraders at Oldfield Middle choose a charity they’d like to support with this grade-wide fundraiser. After rounds of persuasive speeches within

classrooms, students vote on their peers’ essays. Ten semifinalists are then chosen to present their charities to the entire grade. This year’s winner was Wyatt LaFountaine, who chose the charity myFace - a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming the lives of patients with facial disfigurement. Focused mainly on children and their families, myFace funds medical, surgical, dental and psychosocial
