The Morning Hour I find there is nothing more spectacular than rising early in the morning before others awaken, to take an hour or two to simply... be. The sun is just starting to rise, the house is quiet and still, nobody needs anything from me, and I don’t yet have to get ready for my day. Most significantly, I don’t have to be “me” yet. What do I mean by that? When our body awakens in the morning, there is a process that immediately starts unfolding. If we’re fortunate to have a bit of extra time, we can slowly open our eyes, stretch our body, take some cleansing breathes and enjoy the comfort of our bed for a few precious moments. But what happens next? Suddenly we remember who we are, as the preset programs rapidly download into our waking mind. We’re hit with a rush of information. “I have to get up and feed the dog, and get the kids ready for school, and get ready for work, and I have that deadline to meet, and there is going to be rush hour traffic this morning, and I have to pay that bill... and, and, and...
Once the old programs begin to play, we’ve lost that special energy field we’re in when we first wake up. Lately, I like to wake up at least an hour early. I use this “hour of power” to stretch, breathe, pray and sit in front of my fireplace sipping my coffee as the run rises. I focus on gratitude and count my blessings. Then, I take a moment to focus on my goals for the day, the week, the month. Not my obligations, there is plenty of time for that later in the day. In this sacred hour, I focus on my goals; the things I want to achieve to further empower my life and to be of service to others. It’s not easy being you, as it is not easy being me. That is, the me that is my daily program of stressors, responsibilities, obligations, dramas and problems. Have you noticed that when you are on vacation you feel invigorated, as though you’ve suddenly got a new lease on life? It’s because that new atmosphere jolts you out of the past and the future, and delivers you directly into the present moment where you forget to be you. You forget
all of the regrets of the past, the worries about the future, and you are just pure consciousness. You are no longer trapped in space and time. You are existing in no time (past or future), no space (your worldly designations), no thing (you). You achieve this same feeling when you are newly in love, or on those days where you serendipitously have the best day ever that just seemed to magically come together; one of those days you always remember. You, quite literally, forget to be stressed or unhappy. The joy of the moment has put you in the now. It’s a different state of consciousness. You can create that feeling daily by allowing yourself an extra hour in your day, when you first wake up, to revel in a pocket of time where you are nothing in particular, and yet everything, at the same time. It takes some discipline to wake up an hour before you have to, but the feeling of positivity and empowerment it affords is well worth practicing this new habit. You are investing one hour in you, the best investment you can make.

For Kerry O'Leary-Mastrobuoni, her grandmother's cheesecake has been a centerpiece of family life since her childhood. She says the family now makes Grandma O'Leary's cheesecake several times per year, including Christmas and Easter, in memory of her grandmother, Helen O'Leary. "She's gone now," says Kerry, "but we continue to make her delicious cheesecake in honor of her."
Pour Pour mixture into glass pie pan. If using pie crust, then pour into crust and place entire pie into glass pan. Lower glass pan into a slightly larger aluminum pan coated in hot water (to avoid any burning). Make sure cheesecake ingredients are level with water in aluminum pan (3/4 of the way up the outside of the glass pie pan. Do not over fill).

Bake Bake for 10 minutes at 500 degrees. Reduce oven temperature to 400 degrees and bake for another 10 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 375 degrees and bake for 20 minutes.

On merely the first day of Washington Drive’s fifth annual Soup-er Bowl food drive, the school came together and managed to fill two whole buckets of canned goods for local Harborfields Central School District families in need. To promote a bit of friendly competition, Photo courtesy of the students were encouraged Elwood Union Free School to bring in food to fill the District bucket of the team they
believed would win the Super Bowl. The drive ran from January 27th to February 1st, and had the goal of surpassing last year’s whopping 300 cans. Throughout the week, the morning announcements included which team had the most cans, motivating students to bring in more the following days. The cans were donated to the food pantry at Washington Drive. This
fundraiser was part of the Acts of Kindness Committee, run by cochairs Alyson Elish and Jennifer Pennisi, and is comprised of teachers who organize and run fundraisers throughout the school year. The cochairs of this committee are Alyson Elish and Jennifer Pennisi.

Suffolk County to Waive All Late Fees and Penalties for Outstanding Tickets Through February 28, 2019. The Suffolk County Traffic and Parking Violation Agency today announced that the County’s amnesty program to waive all late fees and penalties for moving violations, parking tickets, and red light camera citations has been extended through February 28. Since it was launched in December, 2018, the amnesty program has helped more than 2,300 residents settle outstanding penalties. Once the amnesty program has concluded, TPVA will
embark on an aggressive collection and enforcement program including the use of an outside boot and tow contractor. Paul Margiotta, Executive Director of Suffolk County Traffic and Parking Violation Agency, said: “We can think of no better Valentine’s Day gift than offering our residents an extra week to rectify their outstanding violations. Before it is too late, I urge everyone to take advantage of this program before enforcement action is taken.” The amnesty program applies to Red Light Camera Safety Program citations, as well as those with moving violations
and parking tickets. The program additionally applies to moving violations, including those that may have been pled to parking tickets. However, amnesty does not apply to cases where a judge has suspended the driver’s registration/privilege to register a motor vehicle in New York State or cases in which a hearing for suspension is pending. Following the amnesty program’s conclusion on February 28, offenders’ vehicles with multiple outstanding fines are be subject to booting and/ or towing. Parking tickets with an existing judgment on said ticket will be eligible for amnesty as
well. For Red Light Camera citations with an existing judgment but not with a suspended registration or pending suspension hearing, the TPVA will waive late fees of $25. Those interested in taking advantage of the amnesty program can visit Suffolk County Traffic Court in the H. Lee Dennison Building, located at 100 Veterans Memorial Highway, in Hauppauge, before February 28, 2019. Rita Moreno: Legacy of a Hollywood Pioneer and Humanitarian By Allison Kugel
Multi-award-winning actress, singer and dancer, Rita Moreno, blazed an iconic trail as the first mainstream Hispanic actress to grace Hollywood, when she played Anita in 1961’s classic film, West Side Story. Throughout the decades, the Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Tony award winner continued to take on roles on her own terms, proving her staying power for six decades. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, she played Sister Peter Marie Reimondo in HBO’s first original dramatic series, OZ. Moreno currently stars as Abuelita Lydia Riera, the hilariously, spicy grandmother on the new incarnation of Norman Lear’s television creation, One Day at a Time, now streaming its third season on Netflix. The show’s official premise is, “Two Cultures, One Familia.” It’s an updated twist on the 1975 hit series starring Bonnie Franklin, Mackenzie Phillips, Valerie Bertinelli and Pat Harrington, but with a twist. The reboot centers around a Hispanic American family.
Recently, Moreno got the call from Steven Spielberg, for a remake of the film that put her on the map, West Side Story. Moreno will play a role in the film as well as Executive Produce. I sat down with Rita Moreno to discuss her career and journey. Allison Kugel: When you won your
updated version, there’s an extra layer to the story in that the family are Hispanic Americans. After all you went through in terms of fighting for roles that accurately represent Hispanic people, do you feel a sense of vindication at portraying a positive representation of a Hispanic family on television? Rita Moreno: Vindication implies that I’m still angry. No, I don’t feel any sense of vindication. I’m just so happy and so proud that Hispanics have more representation. I think we’re still not there. I think we are underrepresented. But feeling vindictive is a waste of time, don’t you think? Allison Kugel: Wrong choice of words. Perhaps a better way to put it would be, “a sense of wholeness.” I was watching an episode earlier, and there’s a scene where your character, Lydia, is talking about the racial slurs she endured in her generation. When her daughter and granddaughter ask her for specifics, Lydia summons up the courage to say the word “spic” out loud. The context of the scene is that she is disempowering that word that was so painful for her. Rita Moreno: What was so remarkable about that scene is that kids don’t even [fully] understand that word. Lydia is carrying on and on about the word “spic,” and everybody in the room is like, “Yeah, so?” It was a terrible word in my time. I love that! Allison Kugel: What do you hope viewers of the updated ODAAT will learn about Hispanic American families? Rita Moreno: It’s what I think they are learning, because we have now gained an American audience as well. We always, of course, had the Hispanic community watching the show. People who are not Hispanic are learning that family is family is family. It’s universal. That’s what Norman was hoping for. You want the universality of the situation to work on people, and that’s what has happened. That moment of, “Oh My God. We’re like that too!” Just add in some spice and some deliciousness, which is the Hispanic nature of the show. Allison Kugel: When you hear other Hispanic performers speak, and I know I have heard this from Jennifer Lopez, they always refer to you as the gold standard of excellence and inspiration. You made them believe that this career was achievable for them. Have you had a chance to
speak to any of the younger Latino actors and singers about your influence on them? Rita Moreno: I’ve heard it from Jennifer, and I’ve heard it from Rosie Perez, and also from Andy Garcia. Allison Kugel: As someone who emigrated to the states from Puerto Rico as a young girl and who wanted to be a performer, who did you look to as a blueprint? Rita Moreno: Well, you know what? No, there were no role models when I was young, and working in the movies in my late teens. There was nobody. I chose one for myself. I chose Elizabeth Taylor, because she was close to my age and she was brunette (laughs); and she was beautiful and gorgeous. I made her my role model. But, you know, there was just nobody that looked like me. The Hispanic community very often calls me La Pionera, the Pioneer. Allison Kugel: Let’s talk about the upcoming remake of the film West Side Story. Rita Moreno: Isn’t that astonishing though? Talk about coming full circle. Allison Kugel: How did you become involved as Executive Producer? Rita Moreno: [Steven Spielberg] always wanted to do the film and he was a good friend of Robert Wise, who co-directed the original film with Jerome Robbins. The interesting thing is that he’s not updating [the story]. It will still take place in 1957. It’s Romeo and Juliet. What’s wonderful about the young girl that he chose for the remake (17-yearold newcomer, Rachel Zegler) is that she is a young girl. Natalie Wood was a woman. I was a woman, playing Anita. I was really, way too old for that role. But that’s how it happened, then. Tony Kushner is doing the script. He wrote Angels in America. The storyline in the new film will be that Doc, who owned the candy store
in the original film, passed away, and now it’s Valentina who runs the candy store (being played by Moreno). They offered the Executive Producer credit to me, because Steven feels that I am the bridge to this movie. Allison Kugel: In the original West Side Story, Natalie Wood who played Maria, was not Hispanic. Is the young actress who will play Maria in the remake, of Puerto Rican descent? Rita Moreno: She’s Hispanic, and that’s what counts. I think she’s Columbian. Here’s the thing; she’s Hispanic, she sings and she’s seventeen. With Romeo and Juliet, that’s how old Juliet was supposed to be. Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner have been absolutely crazy when it comes to finding Hispanic people to play the Hispanic roles. They even called the University of Puerto Rico and made an appointment for a panel meeting with an audience who were allowed to ask questions about the movie, and [express] how they felt about it. But I did tell Steven, I said, “You know, there are always people with agendas. There will always be somebody who’s not happy with it because of… whatever. So, get used to that. In 2014, Actor Morgan Freeman presented Moreno with the Screen Actor’s Guild Lifetime Achievement Award, calling her “a world class actress, singer and dancer,” and just as significantly, “a fighter, who battled to break free of racial and sexual barriers that plagued Hollywood’s golden age.” Before there was Rosie Perez, Salma Hyek or Jennifer Lopez, there was the inimitable Rita Moreno.
Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1962 for the film, West Side Story, you thought you would transcend racial stereotypes with the parts you would be offered. Rita Moreno: And I was very disappointed (laughs). Not only disappointed, but it really, really broke my heart. Allison Kugel: Your famous quote about this phase of your career was, “I showed them. I didn’t work for seven years.” Rita Moreno: When I say, “I showed them,” of course I’m being facetious. Allison Kugel: Of course. And in this business, it’s very hard to turn down work. Writers write; Actors act. It’s what you do, and you crave it. Rita Moreno: Not only crave it. It pays the rent. Allison Kugel: Yeah, and then there’s that! (Laughs) Any regrets about taking that stance? Rita Moreno: I think it was a very good decision on my part, because the only thing that was being offered, really, were gang movies, and they certainly weren’t as interesting as West Side Story. I think it would have depressed the heck out of me to go back to that stuff. It paid off in the sense that I had peace of mind, and I didn’t feel like I was being insulted. Allison Kugel: Let’s talk about the amazing Norman Lear and the One Day at a Time reboot on Netflix you’re starring in. Rita Moreno: Isn’t he something?! Allison Kugel: I think he is a genius! Rita Moreno: He is a genius, you’re right. He’s still going strong. He’s going to be 96, and he can speak and he can walk (laughs). He’s a remarkable man, and a lovely, lovely person. Allison Kugel: All in the Family is my favorite sitcom of all time. Rita Moreno: Oh, it’s one of my favorite shows too! Allison Kugel: The way he has tackled race, gender, religion, sexuality...on and on, has helped to re-shape society. The original One Day at a Time with Bonnie Franklin, Mackenzie Phillips, Valerie Bertinelli was very progressive in that single motherhood was much more taboo at that time. With this

Students in Northport High School’s fashion club recently created a large art panel dedicated to the Parkland High School victims. The panel, entitled “Flowers of Love,” consists of 17 beautiful interconnected felt flowers to represent the innocent lives lost. The students employed the Nuno Felting technique which uses wool and silk woven together. This technique was taught to them by local textile artist Oksana Danzinger,
who volunteered earlier in the school year to teach the students. “Through the process of creating a beautiful piece of art students find a peaceful outlet for painful memories of this most tragic event,” said art teacher and club facilitator Mrs. O’Neill-Gonzalez. On Monday, Febuary 4th, students presented their work at the Northport Public Library. Additionally, the high school tour choir and IB dance students performed

in honor of the Parkland tragedy. “This project is also adding to our effort to create a community event where young people can openly, and in a positive way, discuss issues of their generation,” said Mrs. O’Neill-Gonzalez. This project was made possible with funds from the New York state Council on the Arts and administered by the Huntington Arts Council. Kindness Rocks Northport’s virtual enterprise firm, Port Pride, is participating in this project as a part of the class’ social responsibility initiative, which reinforces the idea that corporations should balance profitmaking with efforts that benefit society. “Sometimes the smallest gestures can make a big impact,” said student Rachel Ricciuti . VE classes teach students to become business professionals by bringing the workplace into the classroom. Some
of those enrolled in the class, taught by Mrs. Kristen Cogan, vocalized how much they value the unique niche the class fills in their education. “This class takes you out of the “norm” of high school and puts you in an experience-based setting where we learn to be truly good civil servants,” said student Will Lober. “We’re given the opportunity to learn how to make a difference, and it’s such an invaluable experience.”

The Elwood Union Free School District hosted their annual K-8 STEAM night at Elwood Middle School on Jan. 17. For this year’s theme, Read It, Dream It, STEAM It, students were invited to bring the worlds of storybook fantasy to life through experimenting with science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. “We were looking for a way to integrate literacy and our typical science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) themes together,” said Technology Instructional Specialist Krista Albrecht, “and we thought it would
be interesting for students to participate in activities related to some of their favorite picture books and also to be exposed to some new titles.” Students and parents journeyed through the school holding a map of the available stations that each contained a different activity. Students had the opportunity to use engineering skills to build a “campsite” for a family that got lost in the woods of a storybook, experiment with heart-rate monitors that tracked resting and active heart rates in real-time, experience augmented reality using “Merge Cubes”, enter a
digital star lab and much more. At one of the stations, “If I Built a Car,” students were hard at work building rubber band propeller cars that ran on stored energy. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District was recently notified that six students from kindergarten through second grade were selected as winners in the National PTA Reflections program. This program is a National PTA and New York State PTA competition that helps students gain confidence in exploring ideas and learning through cultural arts. This year, students
were asked to respond to the theme “Heroes Around Me.” Six students were named winners at the schoolwide level and are continuing on to the regional level of the competition: firstgrader Jaxson Beal and second-grader Owen Birmingham for visual arts; first-grader Avery Muller for photography; second graders Iliana Diaz and Muhammad Qasim for literature, and second-
grader Aubrey DeMaio for dance. Aubrey was also named regional winner for her submission and has moved on to the state level of the competition. Additionally, along with the school’s other Reflections participants and honorable mentions, winners were honored at a special ceremony held at Washington Drive on January 31st.
Hands-On Social Studies In Mrs. Jennifer Klein’s social studies classes at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District, each unit culminates with a performance task that helps them bring their textbook learned knowledge to life. Earlier this winter, students learned about ancient Mesopotamia and were required to design a currency that represented important aspects of the Sumerian civilization. A winner from each class was selected by district administrators who served
as “judges.” Students Charlotte Hasher, Ava Ciafaidoni and Brian Muro were all chosen for their artwork and knowledge of Mesopotamian culture. When learning about ancient Egypt, students learned how the Egyptians mummified people after death, and had the opportunity to perform a real mummification on an apple. Students even built tombs for their mummies. Additionally, during the unit on Greece and Rome, students created mythology comic strips and dress as Greek deities
and built 3D models of certain aspects of Roman daily life and architecture. At the end of the school year, students will choose a civilization we have not studied and prove to their peers why it is considered a civilization. “ I n t e g r a t i n g performance tasks truly helps students demonstrate their understanding of a unit,” said Mrs. Klein, “and they enjoy being able to physically create something to demonstrate that knowledge.”

Paws of War is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military Veterans who suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each Veteran can ex p e r i e n c e the therapeutic and unconditional love that only a companion animal can bring! Since 2014, Paws of War has supported over 100 Veterans with service dogs rescued from kill shelters. As explained in my previous articles, Paws of War offers many different services to our Veterans. In addition to those services, this organization runs various programs which gives those in our community the opportunity to get involved. Their Youth Program aims to develop the character of our nation’s youth. A critical part of what Paws of War does with this program is sharing stories of their Veterans and their dogs to inspire and motivate children. This character development based program will provide students opportunities to explore the concepts of courage, patriotism, sacrifice, integrity and humility, and how these values can be exemplified in daily life!
