2020 Prom Boutique Gown Collection Hosted At Westy Self Storage Westy Self Storage continues its support for the 12th consecutive year of the Prom Boutique sponsored by the Long Island Volunteer Center. Westy Self Storage in East Northport is pleased to host this drive as a designated collection site for donations of new and gently-used prom gowns, bridesmaid dresses, special
occasion dresses, shoes, handbags and costume jewelry. Donations are accepted through March 1. Westy has also provided free storage space for the items collected and will assist in transporting them to the Prom Boutique. The Prom Boutique distributes all dresses and accessories free of charge to young women
of families across Long Island who cannot easily absorb the expense of a new gown to attend their prom, graduation, sweet sixteen or other significant occasion. The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.
This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season

Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert said that the pageant is one of the most well attended events of the year and, according to world language teacher Nicole Gendjoian, it has become Elwood tradition. Participating seniors – Aidan Desmond Andres

and comedy skits, which were met with thunderous applause from the audience. Each contestant at this year’s show had to show off their best date, formal and beach wear, as well as perform a talent or comedy skit to be considered for the title. Justin, Cartsen and Nick paid tribute to The Beatles, whereas Eddie created a comedy skit video as a John H. Glenn security guard. As the seniors appeared on stage, a small group of teacher judges ranked the students on their performances and, at the end of the show, awarded
titles to each of them based on category. Senior Eddie Donnellan was crowned Mr. Glenn 2020. Ms. Gendjoian, who has directed the show for the past two years, said that the competition serves as a fundraiser for the senior class. “These boys are a team. It honestly didn’t even feel like a competition until the night of because they were having so much fun at rehearsals,” she said. “Many of them included each other in their walkouts or skits. I’m so proud of the incredible show they put on.”

In 2015, a local grandmother suddenly had to take on full-time care of her young granddaughter and for this, she was not prepared. Debbie Loesch and her daughter Brittany turned to social media to simply ask random people if they had the items that were needed and if they be willing to donate them to this woman in her moment of need. Various people within certain Facebook groups did not take well to these requests and the motherdaughter duo caught some very negative backlash. Believing that there would be many people willing to help if they knew of the immediate need, they created a new Facebook Page: Angels of Long Island. With the purest of intention, neighbors helping neighbors, once again they asked friends and family “Can you help this woman, a neighbor, in need?” Quickly about 200 people connected to their page and within one week the woman’s needs were meet. And so it began, Neighbors Helping Neighbors. Knowing there were so many others in need, Debbie and Brittany started collecting whatever people were willing to donate. They stored it throughout their house and yard. As the
stockpile grew, they used a trailer, sheds, tents and tarps to not allow anything to go to waste knowing at some time, someone may need it. They were now consistently matching up many people to what they needed and knew they were on to something big. In 2017 Angels of LI opened a 3800 square foot thrift store located at 350-23 E. Main Street in Patchogue. Now they have all their donations displayed in a store setting. When someone is in crisis or moving from crisis to something more stable, they can come in and simply shop for what they need. Bed linens, furniture, pots and pans, clothes (within some guidelines of course) but all for free! The thrift store is open to the public to come purchase items as well. The money raised from sales directly supports the many other services their outreach program provides. With the help of their now over 60,000 followers, the Patchogue location hosts a few annual events all in line with their mission. The Angels, who are run solely by volunteers, turn their entire parking lot into an extension of the store. They set up a system for families during their “Back to School” event to go through and choose many items such as backpacks, school supplies, clothes, and shoes.

Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills) honored Half Hollow Hills bus driver Janie Lozano and Signal Hill Elementary School student Hunter Javeline for their quick actions that ensured the safety of the students aboard a bus driven by Lozano when it caught fire. The school bus was en route to Signal Hill Elementary School when Lozano noticed a “ball of
fire” emitting from the bus in the rearview mirror. She quickly stopped the bus and initiated its orderly evacuation, which was aided by Javeline, who Lozano indicated was integral in the students’ safe departure from the bus. “It was my privilege to recognize Janie and Hunter for the heroism they exhibited,” said Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland. “As
someone who drove a bus for ten years, I know that the safety of passengers is paramount in the mind of a bus driver. Janie’s actions were nothing short of courageous and Hunter’s assistance in the evacuation was remarkable and brave. They are testaments to the excellence that is typical of the employees and students of the Half Hollow Hills Central School District.”

Several students from Northport High School’s Digital Generation course presented their collaborative final projects at Stony Brook University’s Charles B. Wang Center on Jan 13. There were 14 groups of students, each with representatives from five Long Island high schools, including Northport, Riverhead, Sayville, Westhampton Beach and
Half Hollow Hills East and West. The program uses a blended learning model to virtually connect the school districts’ students to have them understand the power of the internet and social media. Since September, the students have worked together using Google digital platforms to communicate and create a public service announcement, infographic and website debating
opposing sides of an ethical dilemma, such as consumer privacy, ethics in college acceptance, public health threats and cyberbullying. The winning teams, which include three Northport High School students – Matt Gray, Gabriella DeStasi and Madison Cassar – will visit Google headquarters in New York City in March.
HS Lacrosse Coach Named National Coach Of The Year
Congratulations to Northport High School varsity lacrosse coach Carol Rainson-Rose who was recently selected as one of 23 high school coaches from across the country as a 2019 National Coach of the Year. The National Federation of State High School Coaches Association has been recognizing coaches through the awards program since 1982 and selects individuals based on the coaches records, affiliation with coaching and other professional organizations, community involvement and coaching philosophy. Coach Rainson-Ros brought lacrosse to the high school back in 1990 and has been coaching the Tigers for 31 years. Having

played the game herself both in high school and in college, she said that she wanted to share that passion with others. “It’s my little dynasty, “she said. “To be able to teach young women the game that I love so that they can take their game to

the next level and just have some fun.” This year, the Tigers won their second state championship, ending their season with a 21-1 record. The team’s next season will start in March and run through the end of June. “Carol has certainly made her mark as an educator and coach. Her commitment and passion for girl’s lacrosse, along with her incredible work ethic and love for her student athletes made her an excellent choice for NFHS Coach of the Year,” District Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Mark Dantuono said. “Northport High School athletics has been fortunate to have her.”

Recognizing Exceptional Math Students
The Elwood Union Free School District’s Board of Education was thrilled to recognize five exceptional Harley Avenue Primary School second graders at its meeting on Jan. 30. Principal Elissa Millan kicked off the meeting by calling upon the students to join her at the podium to congratulate them on their outstanding mathematical achievements. Over the past two years, the school has instituted a strong focus on math fluency, teaching the students the importance of knowing their math facts with automaticity. Each month, teachers give their students math fluency assessments to test
their knowledge and speed in math facts and fluency. Harley Avenue’s second graders – Alejandro Canela, Dylan Dmytryk, Dylan Giglia, Devin Janke, and Arbab Malhi – all received perfect scores on each of their monthly assessments this year, as well as perfect scores on additional fluency challenges, which included mixed addition and subtraction problems. In addition, each of the students answered the questions in less than 60 seconds, which Principal Millan said is more than 30 seconds less than the time given to them during their regular fluency assessments. “We are all very proud
of their hard work and I know we will continue to see great things form these boys,” she said. “Keep up the great work.
