By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s here! It’s finally arrived! The moment you all (well I and my Human) have been waiting for! My very first birthday in my bowl, celebrated this past weekend with my Human family. Who would’ve thought this day would come… Of course, in Betta years, that probably makes me about 47. Not to mention the countless days… months… years… I spent languishing in that tiny Tupperware container they kept me in at the pet store. But, ever since February 16th, 2015, the day my Human adopted me, all has been well. There was a party, with dinner, and even a few presents! What does one buy a Betta, you ask? Well, there was the pre-Birthday/Christmas gift of a brand new tank – complete
with a filter and a light and everything – which my Human has yet to transfer me into… something about not wanting to “traumatize” me without consulting with the “pet experts” at the store first. I haven’t received a scheduled moving date as of yet. Speaking of, I’m still patiently waiting to be taken on that shopping spree I was promised back in August for my six-month birthday. All the sales that have come and gone… just think what fancy toys and plants I could have accumulated by now! I must have at least enough for a small castle saved away. And pretty gravel… and maybe a leafy hammock to sleep in… and a seashell to decorate… Tiny brain, big dreams. The one thing I didn’t get was a fishy friend to play with. I don’t need anything fancy like me; perhaps just a small
shrimp or a snail to keep me company, and maybe vacuum my bowl now and then. Those long hours spent waiting for my Human to return home each day are awfully boring. There are only so many laps a Betta can swim around his plant, only so much gravel to push from one corner to another. Ah, but enough complaining. I’ve decided to turn over a new fin for my new year and focus on being positive and loving toward my Human, my Grammy and any other visitors who might like to visit and gaze upon my beauty. (Hey, I didn’t say I was going to take up modesty.) ‘Til next time, thanks to all the readers for their birthday greetings. And to my Human family, thank you for the best first birthday a Betta could hope to have. Here’s to many more!

As a new initiative to compliment its character education program, one student in kindergarten, first- and second-grade at Elwood’s Harley Avenue Primary School will be honored as “Harley Knight of the Month” for embodying characteristics of a good citizen. To kick off the program, Principal Elissa Toubin, accompanied by the Elwood-John Glenn Knight
mascot, led a special assembly on February 3rd to share with students the premise of the program as well as discussed ways to demonstrate good citizenship. Reading for the Gold From January 22nd29th, the PTA at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School sponsored Parents as Reading Partners (PARP), a statewide reading program that encourages students to read at home with parents and host schoolwide events to establish good reading habits. This year’s PARP theme at TJL was “Reading for the Gold.” Inspired by an Olympic competition, each wing of the building was assigned and decorated to represent a different country. A huge poster of the Olympic symbol was adorned at the entrance of the school and the symbol was placed throughout the building. Led by administrators and teachers, the week
kicked off with a special assembly to help students build up excitement for the program. To conclude the presentation, teachers sang lyrics that promoted reading to the tune of “Shake It Off,” by Taylor Swift. Each day of the week offered a new theme for students to participate and show off their PARP spirit. Students celebrated “Reading Day” by wearing the color red; used their imagination for “Crazy Hat Day;” supported their teams on “Favorite Jersey Day” and literally dropped everything and read for D.E.A.R. Day. Additionally, students took a pledge to read a certain number of minutes each night and
then completed reading forms signed by their parents. As added motivation, the entire school was challenged to complete at least 100,000 minutes of reading. If they met this feat, they had the opportunity to create a “Principal’s Challenge,” a students-made challenge that their principal, Margy Greene, would perform. The PTA tallied a total of 102,094 minutes read by the entire student body and students are submitting their ideas for the Principal’s Challenge. In addition, winners were announced from each grade level and class with the most minutes read.

Councilman Mark Cuthbertson cited an incident in a South Carolina church last year in which nine persons who had gathered for bible study were killed by someone who expressed hatred toward them and a recent incident in which a college student from South Huntington had been the victim of a racial attack in Albany. “It highlights that we have so much work, so much to do,” he said. “But at the end of the day, we have to have faith. We have to have faith that as a society we will continue to fight discrimination and racial hatred. Because in the end the good people of our community far outnumber the bad, and those whose lives are guided by faith and
hope far outnumber those whose lives are guided by fear and hatred.” Councilwoman Susan A. Berland cited the continuing inspiration of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Let us continue his legacy by giving back to our community and following in his footsteps,” she said. “Dr. Martin Luther King led by example. We should honor his legacy by doing the same. Let us take this opportunity to celebrate our common humanity and make a better future for all of us.” Councilwoman Tracey A. Edwards added, “While it is wonderful and we should celebrate and honor Martin Luther King, and it is wonderful that we celebrate and come together for Black History Month, we are African-Americans in March, we are African-Americans for 12 months of the year, and we want to make sure that we continue to work as a community and we continue to be together and work with all of the other ethnicities to make Huntington stronger than it has ever been.” Councilman Eugene Cook directed his remarks to Mr. Pitts. “Thank you for inspiring us all,” he said. “The struggles you have gone through, the hardship. But you’ve made it.” The program also featured performances by The Voices of Huntington, a group composed of members from the Town’s black churches; The Redettes, dance group directed by Yvette Brideau; and a dramatic reading by Sade Benitez. The national anthem was sung by Leon Jamison; Courtney Daniels led the singing of the Negro National Anthem. County Legis. Dr. William Spencer delivered the invocation and Bishop Stephanie B. Riddle-Green gave the benediction. ABC News “Nighline” co-Anchor Byron Pitts told the audience at the Town of Huntington’s annual Black History Month Celebration that everyone should consider service – to the community and to others – as an important part of their lives. “All of us have a responsibility to serve,” Pitts said in delivering a rousing keynote address at the February 4th event. “All of us have a responsibility to share the gifts God has given us with others.” “I urge you to have big dreams in for your life, and that your dreams include not only your success, but the success of your family, and not just the success of your family, but the success of this great community, but not just the success of Huntington, but the success of our nation, because despite what you often see on television, and what you may often read in the newspaper, it is that America is still the greatest country on earth. Despite our many flaws, despite our troubled history, we remain the envy of the world, and the promise of America is unlike that of any place on earth.” Pitts traced his own personal history, and the people who helped him overcome obstacles that included learning difficulties and a stutter, as well as incorrect assessments of his abilities. “I am a witness to what can happen when good and decent people invest in young people,” he said. At the ceremony, which was held at the Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School, each of the Town Board members spoke about Black History Month, its theme and its significance. Supervisor Frank P. Petrone noted that the theme for this year, as established by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, is “Hallowed Grounds: Sites of African American Memories.” Huntington, he noted, had several such sites spanning the Town, including the Jupiter Hammon House in Huntington, where the country’s first published

Athlete Commits Elwood-John H. Glenn High School senior Dareus Smith is bound for Long Island University Post this fall to continue his football career on a full scholarship as he works to obtain a degree in business. Family members, coaches and district administrators surrounded the talented Elwood Knights football player as he finalized his
commitment during a National Letter of Intent ceremony at the high school on February 3rd. Passionate for the sport, Smith dedicated six years to the Elwood football program, playing two years on the middle school team and four years on the varsity team. Given the title of captain in his senior year, Smith worked hard as
a defensive and offensive tackle. During his athletic career, he has been named to the All-State, All-County and All-League teams. In addition to his athletic accolades, he is attentive to his schoolwork and currently holding an 84 GPA. In his spare time, Smith volunteers with the Special Olympics New York.

Increase in Collections Two major changes affecting how Huntington residents recycle paper, glass, bottles and electronic waste produced significant increases in 2015. At the beginning of 2015, the Town began single stream recycling, allowing residents to put all recyclables into a single can, which is collected weekly. Previously, residents were required to separate bottles and cans from newspapers, magazines and cardboard and put them out for collection on alternate weeks. As a result of this change, which made recycling more convenient, the amount of recyclables collected increased by just under 10 percent: from 13,327.44 tons collected in
2014 to 14,609.23 tons in 2015. The second change applied to electronic waste such as televisions, computers, computer printers and monitors. For many years, the Town has accepted e-waste at the Town’s Recycling Center, 642 New York Avenue, Huntington, and in 2013 began a program of allowing residents to call for curbside pickup. On January 1st, 2015, a state law took effect making e-waste recycling mandatory by banning the collection of e-waste with regular garbage. The Town and its contracted refuse carters began placing stickers on e-waste left out with regular garbage informing residents of the law and listing the options
for disposal, including dropoff at the Recycling Center, curbside pickup, taking it to a participating store and sending it back to the manufacturer. As a result, calls for curbside pickup nearly quadrupled in 2015, with 2,391 calls, as compared to 643 in 2014. “These are encouraging numbers,” Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said. “I hope that residents will continue to embrace single stream recycling and the recycling and proper disposal of e-waste. In doing that, they are helping to preserve our environment and save money by eliminating the need to build new resource recovery plants and burn more of our solid waste.”

Annual Polar Bear Scouting Skills Camporee Weekend - held this year at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp sled (with a patrol member on it). in Wading River during the January 29th-31st weekend, Troop 8 (Northport)’s Duct Tape Patrol members compete in the timed lumberjack event, in this case using a twoman saw, with the objective to work as a team and cut through the log as quickly as possible. BEAR BAG EVENT - During the 2016 Matinecock District (B.S.A.) Annual Polar Bear Scouting Skills Camporee Weekend - held this year at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp in Wading River during the January 29th-31st weekend, the scouts participated at the Bear Bag Event where the scouts were tested on their scouting skills as they raced the clock to tie the correct knots on the trees as they raised two bags containing food items that bears might want to get into during the overnight of a camping trip at the timed event.
