The Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School Physical Education department recently hosted their sixth annual fifthgrade Charity Volleyball Tournament to raise money for two families in the community. With more than 190 fifth-grade participants, the school raised close to $6,500. All proceeds from the event went to the Renz and Schmidt Families. The Renz family recently lost their beloved father and husband, while the Schmidt family is currently caring for their daughter, a Harborfields High School student battling cancer. Students paid a registration fee to play in the tournament and
a concession stand was run in the cafeteria to help raise money. A raffle drawing also took place which allowed the entire school to contribute to the cause. Prizes included sport equipment packages, I-Tunes gift cards, Game Stop gift cards and free weeks at the Harborfields Alumni and Community Educational Foundation (HACEF), Booster Club and Mecurio summer camps. The big items from the evening were a GoPro Camera and Beats by Dre Headphones. “We would like to thank TJL PTA president Kimberly Arias and the PTA for all of their help and support leading up to the tournament and the day
of the tournament,” said physical education teacher Michele Turchiano. “We would also like to thank the TJL faculty and staff for their donations and Assistant Principal Mary Williams and Principal Marguerite Greene for allowing us to continue to run our tournament year in and year out.” “We truly appreciate the entire TJL family for coming together to help us make this year’s tournament a memorable one,” she added. Stacey Renz visited the school at the end of January to meet some of the students who participated in the tournament and thanked them personally for a job well done.
A Bright Future Elwood-John H. Glenn High School senior Damien Caffrey proudly signed his national letter of intent on February 1st to play college football at LIU Post. Surrounded by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, Director of Athletics and Physical Education David Shanahan, administrators, coaches and family members, the special ceremony took place in the high school gymnasium. During the ceremony, Mr. Shanahan praised Damien for gaining an athletic scholarship with LIU, a difficult achievement for many.
“Across the country, only 2 percent of high school students receive an athletic scholarship,” he said. “We take this time to recognize you for your efforts, your hard work and to wish you well.” Dr. Bossert also congratulated Damien on his next chapter. “You have represented John Glenn well and we expect you to go on to do great things at LIU,” he said. “Remember your roots and where you came from. We couldn’t be more proud of you.” Principal Carisa Burzynski shared her own words of encouragement
with the student-athlete. “When you do your best and work hard, good things come your way,” she said. “I wish you continued success.” In addition to playing on the Elwood-John H. Glenn High School football team, Damien is also is a star wrestler. He recently won the 2017 Eastern State 220 lbs. Wrestling Championship…a title that his coach, T.J. Brocking, is very proud of. “He has worked extremely hard to be a top athlete,” he said. “He is ranked number one in the state in two different weight levels.”

Presentations of the Catholic Cub Scout Religious Emblems were made during the Celebration of the Mass at St. Anthony of Padua in East Northport on Scout Sunday services. The Boy Scouts of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for millions of America’s youth. Scouting has brought families and
communities together for more than 100 years to prepare America’s youth to live, work, and play with character and integrity. Scouting is as vital and relevant today as it was when our journey began. The Scout Sunday tradition was started to make people in houses of worship aware of Scouting, and to allow Scouts to live out their “Duty to God” pledged each week.” During the presentation of the Cub Scout Religious Emblems Joseph Evans of Troop 52 (East Northport),
gave the explanation of the medals and read each of the Cub Scout’s names for the Light of Christ recipients and the names for the Parvuli Dei recipients. From the lectern, the Boy Scouts individually called up the youths and their parents to receive their award from Rev. Monsignor Joseph Mirro and lined up to be recognized by the congregation. Snow Days & Days Gone By By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Ah, snow days. Time was, they were a rare occasion to be looked forward to, an excuse to be carefree and cozy and free of all obligation. No more. Now, they are fraught with angst over the prospect of shoveling out, navigating the treacherous roadways and – somehow – making up for the time lost, whether at work, school or elsewhere. Oh, to be a child again… Speaking of the younger generation, as I was moving mound after mound of heavy, wet snow to the curbside in my apartment complex this past week, one of my neighbors remarked how “back in the day” it was common to see the local middle and high school boys clamoring to shovel out their neighbors’ driveways, usually for a quite reasonable sum. They made a few extra dollars, the elderly and infirmed were spared the agony of backbreaking labor, and all was well with the world.
“Nowadays,” he said, “you’ll be lucky to get them to look up from their phone for a minute.” Which brings me to my next point – when, exactly, did it become a requirement for every child from the age of four on up to have their own cell phone? I understand the practical purposes it serves in case of emergencies and all; but you can’t tell me that sending a child to school with a phone is not a distraction waiting to happen. Back in my day (all 17 years ago) we brought quarters for the pay phone. And, if by chance we were low on change, we asked to go to the Main Office, where they were more than happy to let us call home for a ride. My, how times have changed. It’s funny how we tend to lose the perspective of exactly how much time has elapsed between certain milestones in life. When someone says “ten years ago,” I immediately assume they’re referring to the 1990’s, when in fact that decade is now ancient history by comparison. It seems
that once the new millennium began, all relatable historical markers were left in the past, and with them some of the most vivid memories of days gone by. How innocent those days seem now, by comparison. Of course, the passing years have brought with them many wonderful innovations and improvements; but we seemed to manage just fine at the time, before it even occurred to our imaginations to dream such concepts. We may not have had cell phones back in school, but we knew how to make snow angels and snowmen, and we knew how to enjoy an unexpected day off much better than our adult selves seem to now. And with that, my shoveling – and my work – is done for the day. It’s on to baking chocolate chip cookies and sipping hot cocoa while catching up on some reading for me. Who says a little nostalgia isn’t good for the soul? Happy Winter to all.

of Eagle Scout through his commitment to the community, as well as the completion of his Eagle Scout Project, which involved building a foursided bench made of mahogany with an opening in the center where he planted a pear tree.

coach them every day.” In addition to the coaching staff, the district was thrilled for this historic win for the high school. “Congratulations to this great group of young ladies for their hard work and to our coaching staff for creating a culture of respect and winning attitude,” said Director of Athletics and Physical Education David Shanahan.
The bench is located near the athletic fields at Northport High School. It was built in memory of 2004 graduate and Eagle Scout, Cpl. Boys Basketball Tournament St. Raphael CYO will host its 10th annual Winter Classic Boys Basketball Tournament for youth teams, 4-8 grade, from February 16th-26th at their parish gymnasium on 600 Newbridge Road in East Meadow. The tournament is one of the premier events on Long Island held in February at the culmination of the boys CYO campaign that has garnered rave reviews from coaches, parents and players in the Nassau and Suffolk County communities. Championship Weekend begins February 25th with all semi-final matchups complete with a full light show, DJ music
during timeouts and the introduction of starting lineups by St. Raphael CYO board members, to give the players a taste of their own “MSG basketball experience.” The national anthem is also sung live by local students and volunteers before each game. Finally, Championship Sunday (February 26th) is a hoops extravaganza that features the five headto-head title games to crown the winners in each bracket. A record 400 participants and 40 teams will participate to vie for first and second place trophies in each division. In addition, each player
on all participating teams receives a commemorative t-shirt from this year’s tournament. Raffle prizes, concessions and contests for kids attending the tournament are also a unique feature of the tournament for each and every game. For the youth basketball purist it is a well organized, fun-filled competitive tournament atmosphere you won’t want to miss. The gymnasium is also handicap accessible. More than 300 families, students, administrators, faculty and board of education members from the Elwood Union Free School District banded together at Elwood Middle School on February 1st to learn about prevention and the dangers of drugs from the Suffolk County Police Department. The program titled, “The Ugly Truth,” has been shared across Long Island to combat the critical issue of increased drug abuse. Elwood was the largest audience that the police department has had in 45 presentations. More than 100 individuals also tuned into the program from the live stream at home. Several key speakers, including Suffolk County Police Commissioner Timothy Sini, Nassau Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter, New York State Assemblymen Chad Lupinacci and Andrew Raia, Town of Huntington Councilwoman Tracey Edwards and Suffolk County Medical Examiner Dr. Michael Caplan, took part in the program. Superintendent of
Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert welcomed the community for coming out for the important evening. “It really gives me great pleasure and satisfaction to see so many community residents, parents, students, faculty and the entire district administration here,” he said. “What you have demonstrated to me is that this is a community that cares about its children. This is not a community that is immune to some of the dangers that we will be talking about tonight.” Assemblyman Raia stressed the importance of getting involved. “We are making great strides but you are part of the solution,” he said. “Being aware of what is going on around you, the symptoms to look for in not just your kids but your neighbors as well.” Commissioner Sini provided statistics for the audience and explained how we are in the midst of a drug epidemic. There were 300 fatal opioid related overdoses in 2016 and first responders including the Suffolk County Police
administrated Narcan over 700 times in the year. “We need to be fighting this epidemic on all fronts – prevention, treatment, law enforcement and recovery,” he said. Those in attendance had the opportunity to receive their own Narcan pack and were educated on how to use it in an emergency situation. Community members also learned about the social host law, emergency hotlines, helpful resources and the extreme consequences of drug abuse on a person’s body. A number of organizations tabled before and after the event to provide more resources for community members. Organizations included the Samaritan Daytop Family Association, Chemical Dependence Services, The Town of Smithtown Horizons Counseling and Education Center and Operation Medicine Cabinet. At the conclusion of the event, an Apple Watch, courtesy of the Elwood Booster club, was raffled off to a lucky member of the audience.

Casting a Spotlight Sixth-graders learned the importance of being an upstander during an antibullying show by Theatre Three at Northport Middle School on February 2nd. East Northport Middle School students visited the school to also take part in the event. The traveling production titled “Class Dismissed! The Bullying Project,” featured original music and addressed the issue of bullying in schools. The auditorium was packed with students as they watched the story about two students being bullied in different forms. The show educated sixth-graders on making good choices, signs of
cyberbullying and how not to be a bystander. At the conclusion of the performance, students were asked the cast questions. Some students asked the performers if they had ever been bullied and others asked for advice about standing up to a bully. “We’ve been to many schools and these students were incredibly engaged and focused on the stage,” said Theatre Three performer Dylan Poulos. “They looked invested in the story we were trying to tell and it was very rewarding to come to the school and experience that.” Theatre Three visited the
school a number of years ago and were asked back as part of the Northport-East Northport School District’s initiative “No Place For Hate.” “We are always looking for ways to highlight the need for students to be upstanders, not bystanders, so what we liked about this was that it really demonstated the power of see it, say it, stop it,” said Principal Timothy Hoss. “Bullies are going to target others but it is the upstanders that make the difference. We want to empower those kids and we think this show does a great job of that.”
