Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced that the county will be supporting the recruiting efforts of Ridgewells, one of the vendors for the U.S. Open Golf Championship, to fill over 550 temporary food service and hospitality jobs at the 118th U.S. Open Championship. To complement its recruiting efforts, the company will be working with St. Joseph’s College through the college’s Hospitality and Tourism Management program as another avenue to generate additional interest. “The ultimate test in golf is returning to Suffolk County, Long Island,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “I encourage anyone who is interested in seeking a temporary job or looking to take advantage of the historic experience to apply online as we look this make this another memorable event.” In partnership with the Suffolk County Department of Labor and the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning, Ridgewells will manage the recruitment, hiring and training of all event staff to support the large scale catering operation at the U.S. Open. A mix of front- andback of house catering positions are available that include tent supervisors, beverage managers, buffet managers, bartenders and servers, tent chefs, sous chefs, kitchen assistants, action station attendants, dishwashers, and operation helpers. This is the fifth time the championship is being hosted at the historic golf course, which will be held from June 11th – 17th

HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. these children. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair right here on Long Island to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. Fire Island Lighthouse Happenings

Northport High School’s Art and Literature Magazine, the Amaranth, was recently selected for both national and statewide awards for the 2016-2017 school year. This art and literary magazine club is advised by high school English teacher Kelly Baldwin and Fine Arts teacher John DeRosa, and is comprised of high school students who are responsible for the production in its entirety. Students write poetry and prose, create paintings and photographs, select submissions from classmates, edit and more. The Amaranth won a third-place award in the annual American

Scholastic Press Association’s magazine competition for the 2016-2017 school year. This organization believes that creating a publication teaches students the fundamentals of publishing, creative writing, concepts of design and more, and the organization believed that the Amaranth showed dedication to excellence in these areas. “I feel that it is well deserved, as well as exciting, to see that all of the club’s hard work has paid off,” said club advisor Mrs. Baldwin. In addition, the Amaranth was recommended for the highest award for

New York State from the National Council of Teachers of English, or NCTE. Northport’s publication was one of 10 to be recommended for the highest award. Both awards were based on the 2016-2017 school year’s publication. Participating students were Julia Aherns, Rachel Buda, Michaela Caruso, Madeleine Corrigan, Maya Dengler, Jack Dunckley, Tina Guo, Leilani Kaiser, Caroline Hines, Ciara Lavin, who is the current Editor in Chief, Erica Marill, Emily McDevitt, Zoe Perles, Natalie Thieke, Zachary Sackstein, Sofia Sawchuk, Ceylan Swenson.

Winter being one of those seasons best suited for indoor activities, I have recently taken up the hobby of reading; well, by taken up, I mean I have ordered several selections with the intent of reading them (hopefully) before spring arrives. I always say I want to read at least one book a month; generally, this amounts to a single magazine, perhaps a chapter or two of a cast-aside novel from several years ago… rarely do I seem to make any considerable progress in this literary department. This year, on New Year’s Day in fact, I made it my mission to use one of my holiday gift cards to order a handful of the “classics” - The Wind in

the Willows, Walden, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, and Wuthering Heights - a veritable collection straight from the pages of an old English department syllabus. Some, I had read bits and pieces of years ago; others, I had always wanted to peruse more thoroughly, but had never taken the opportunity to dive into. Of course, nearly six weeks later, and I have yet to make it past the introduction to The Wind in the Willows. An hour a night, I told myself. Simple. Just make it a habit, and the pages will fly by, I theorized. This is recreational reading - no obligation, no required deadline. Read at your leisure, because you want to. And still, somehow, the pile of books remains virtually untouched. Perhaps I should join a book club. Maybe I need the structure, the faux “assignment” to push me

along. Nightly chapter summaries, on the teacher’s desk by morning! But, in all seriousness, it is truly remarkable how difficult we find the task of simply enriching our lives in a cultural sense. Binge a series on Netflix over the course of a few days? Not a problem. Spend hours mindlessly browsing social media? Done. Priorities, indeed. As much as I never thought I would wish for winter to prolong, I am somewhat glad that another month remains to tackle this self-imposed task. Five weeks, to be precise. One book per week or so. Doable? Sure, with the proper focus. Such is the extent of my winter “To Do” list. Not a bad way to spend an evening. Don’t worry, dear readers, you shall have a full report of my progress - or lack thereof by next month. {Side note: they still make Cliff Notes, right?}

Black History Celebration involvement led her to become a board member, committee member, or ground worker for numerous organizations throughout Suffolk County. For more than 40 years, she has volunteered at the Huntington Food Pantry in various capacities, and currently serves as its vice president. The program will also recognize Henrietta Lacks, a Maryland resident whose cancer cells are the source of one of the most important cell lines in medical research. Lacks was the unwitting source of these cells, taken form a tumor biopsied during treatment for cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD, in 1951, shortly before

her death. Researchers discovered that the cells were unique in that they reproduced at a high rate and could be kept alive long enough to allow more in-depth examination. The cells were used to help develop the polio vaccine, among other breakthroughs, and were the first human cells to be successfully cloned. Lacks had not given permission to harvest her cells; at the time, permission was not required. In the 1980s, after the contribution became known to the Lacks family, the situation became a leading case on the question of privacy. The significance of Lack’s cells’ contributions to medical science will be the subject of a special talk by

Dr. David Spector, director of research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. The keynote address will be delivered by Dix Hills resident Vanessa Braxton. An engineer by training, she had a 20-year career in the field of construction management and civil engineering, where she managed construction and engineering contracts worth over $350 million. More recently, however, she has become known as a successful entrepreneur as the founder, president and chief executive officer of Black Momma Vodka/Black Momma Tea and Café. She is the first AfricanAmerican woman distiller and master blender and operator of a nationallydistributed vodka in the

United States and the only black-owned tea and beverage manufacturing facility. She has mentored and presented entrepreneurship seminars to business owners throughout the United States, presented innovative programs about seeking domestic and international government contracts and implemented strategic developmental task to start and/or expand economic empowerment. “Each year, the Town’s Black History Month program highlights the achievements, both current and historical, of persons of color, and this year is certainly no exception as it focuses on timely topics and notable contributions by women,”

Huntington Supervisor Chad A. Art of the Dance Northport and East Northport sixth-graders were treated to an exciting display of culture and history on January 30th. The Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, a multi-cultural and interactive dance program with bright costumes and mesmerizing props, came to perform for

the students. The performances brought the audience on an explorative journey of the Chinese culture, which is one of the most ancient cultures in the world. The program included a detailed explanation of the background of each dance, informing the audience

Elwood Middle School hosted its fourth consecutive, and largest, VEX IQ Robotics Competition on January 27th. This competition, which is presented by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation, welcomed 40 participating teams from 14 different schools and organizations from all across the island. In this competition, teams of students use robots that they’ve designed and built to compete with other teams in an engineering challenge. Tournaments are held throughout the year at regional, state,

and national levels — and ultimately culminate at the VEX Robotics World Championship. Each year, the VEX IQ challenge changes. This year’s challenge required students to design robots that are able to pick up, move, sort and stack rings on poles of different heights. Students were required to put the STEM concepts they’ve learned to the test as they sharpened their skills in teamwork, leadership, communications and more. “The competition encompasses many 21stcentury skills that our

students will need in the future,” said Director of Math, Science and Technology Eileen KellyGorman. In addition, students participated in teamwork activities that selected tasks at random, competed in individual skills challenges, and more. Teams also were judged based on their designs, STEM research projects presented in front of judges and overall excellence. Teams that win at one of the qualifying competitions qualify for the state finals in Rockville Centre. The winners of this competition will qualify for VEX Worlds in Kentucky.

Extinguishing ENDS In partnership with the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Harborfields High School held a schoolwide assembly on the misconceptions and the health hazards of vaping and electronic cigarettes on February 5th. Suffolk County Legislator William Spencer introduced Senior Public Health Educator Bonnie Anderson, who presented the students and administration in attendance with accurate and scientific facts addressing the use of these electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). Ms. Anderson addressed many topics regarding the use of ENDS, including

the addictive nature of e-cigarettes, the long and short-term dangers of vaping, how the product is marketed in fruit and candy flavors designed to be attractive to adolescents, and how this unregulated product may contain inconsistent levels of nicotine and other dangerous chemicals. “Just because it looks harmless, and you’re told that it’s harmless, doesn’t mean it is,” she told the students. In addition, Ms. Anderson explained that there have been no studies conducted on the effects of ENDS on those who use them, because it has not been on the market long enough to study.

“Do you think that means the tobacco industry cares about your health?” Ms. Anderson asked her audience, to which they responded with a resounding “no.” Students left the assembly with an understanding that the use of ENDS is a major public health concern and were challenged to change the trend of ENDS use among their peers and in their school. “We pride ourselves in committing to the care of our students,” said high school Principal Tim Russo, “and we will never stop exploring avenues in which to ensure their safety and well-being.”

Sculpture Design Approved

The Huntington Town Board, at its February 6th meeting, approved a committee’s recommendation for the design of a sculpture to be located at Sweet Hollow Park in Melville and authorized the artist to create and install it. The welded aluminum sculpture, entitled “Community,” incorporates several symbolic elements, including a tree of life, a sphere depicting people of all ages with hands linked and the saying “In the joy of others lies our own,” the slogan of the Hindu organization Bochasanwasi Shree

Akshar PurushottamNortheast (BAPS). The BAPS sold the Town the land that became Sweet Hollow Park. The design was submitted by a team headed by Babylon artist Steven Zaleski. The team was selected from among eight artists who responded to a request for qualifications. Their credentials and the eventual chosen design were reviewed by a selection panel that included representatives from the Town’s Public Art Advisory Committee, interested stakeholders from the community and the Town’s Open Space Coordinator.

Plans for a sculpture were included in the design for the park, the Town’s newest, which opened in 2017. Funding for the work, which was appropriated in 2015, comes from the Town’s Environmental Open Space and Park Improvement Fund. It will be installed at the entrance to the park, in front of the pavilion. “Huntington appreciates how works of art enhance our enjoyment of public spaces,” Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci said. “This sculpture will add to the Town’s public art inventory and serve as a symbol of the bond forged between the Town, the community

and the BAPS that made the park possible.” In other action, the Town Board: approved the appointment of deputy directors and directors for six Town departments: General Services (Andre Sorrentino, director); Public Safety (Peter Sammis, director; Joseph Rose, deputy director); Parks and Recreation (Greg Wagner, director; William Musto, deputy director); Environmental Waste Management (John Clark, director; Matthew Laux, deputy director; Information Technology (Nicholas Wieland, deputy director); and Maritime

Services (Dominick Spada, deputy director). - appropriated $230,000 from the Parks and Recreation Reserve Fund to help fund construction of the Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo Spray Park at Elwood Park. - approved continuing the long-time agreement with the Huntington YMCA to provide an instructional sailing and kayaking program at Centerport Beach. - appointed Paul Ehrlich as a member an as vice chair of the Planning Board and Richard McGrath as a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals. - appointed assistant town attorney Brooke

Library to Launch Walt Whitman Birthplace Association (WWBA) is proud to announce that the Jeffrey S. Gould Foundation, established by WWBA Trustee Jeffrey Gould, has generously donated $10,000 to enable WWBA to complete the acquisition of the Feinstein Collection of 250 Whitman-related books. The collection includes many rare books, including first-editions of Leaves of Grass and November Boughs. The collection will become known as The Norman and Jeanette Gould Library, comprised of the Feinstein Collection. The public is invited to join the Gould and Feinstein families at the celebratory launch of The Norman and Jeanette Gould Library on April 26th, at 1 to 3 p.m. at the Birthplace. WWBA expects local government officials and scholars to be in attendance. The collection will be

housed and preserved on the Walt Whitman Birthplace premises and it will be available to the public for scholarly research, historic documentation, and general appreciation of Whitman’s individual and collective writings. All usage of WWBA’s library collection is by appointment and under the supervision of Curator Richard Ryan to best preserve and maintain the books for generations to come. This acquisition increases the WWBA book collection by 8% to total 1,800 volumes. Marvin Feinstein was a lifelong book collector and bookseller who lived in Northport, LI. His widow, Miriam, and sons David and Allen, wanted to keep his Whitman collection intact and approached the Whitman Association with the donation of forty books and with the offer to donate half the

value of the remaining collection of 250 books, appraised at approximately $20,000. The Association first appropriated funds to purchase ten books, but upon reviewing the items in the collection, decided to try and raise funds to purchase the entire collection. When Trustee Jeffrey Gould heard of the literary and historic significance of the collection, he generously offered to secure the collection with his donation. WWBA extends many thanks to Trustee Jeffrey Gould and to the Feinstein Family for their work on behalf of literary scholarship and historic preservation. Free and open to the public.
