STEAM Fair A Huge Hit Elwood is constantly encouraging students to get involved in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. On Jan. 16, students from kindergarten through eighth grade were invited to Elwood Middle School to explore some fun and exciting winter wonderland-themed

STEAM activities. Upon entering the school, students were intrigued by a science experiment, titled fire and ice, that used alcohol and ice to produce an orange flame. Down the hall, students made their very own bath bombs, built snowmen out of toothpicks and marshmallows, and

learned to code with help from Huntington Youth Bureau’s Project Excel team members. Students got to enjoy time with family and friends, while expanding their understanding of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.

The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.

Their upcoming spring season will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! This organization truly makes a difference! See the results from those who have participated:

They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate!

Mr. Carl R. Reinhard, a resident of Huntington Station, LI, died January 21, 2020 at Hospice Inn, Melville, LI. He was 59 Years old. Mr. Reinhard was born on June 25, 1960 in Southampton, LI to Carl and Marilyn (Lake) Reinhard. He was employed by West Amity Auto Part, Massapequa, LI, as a machinist. Survivors include his wife, Erica, his son Carl, Jr., his sister Carol Lynn Reinhard, his brother Robert Reinhard and his nieces and nephews Tom, Pete, Tim and Becky Reinhard. The Reverend David W. Anglin conducted a memorial service at the funeral home on Sunday, January 25, 2020. Cremation was private. Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville, New York.

The events will take place at Smith Haven Mall on Saturday, February 15 from 1 to 3 p.m. and Roosevelt Field on Saturday, February 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. For added fun, shoppers can spin the Prize Wheel at Smith Haven Mall’s Guest Services for a chance to win special prizes during the event and enjoy music and additional activities at Roosevelt Field. Virtual Enterprise Students Visit LIU Post

Students from Northport High School’s Virtual Enterprise courses recently attended the Long Island Regional Conference and Trade Show Exhibition at LIU Post. This event brings together more than 1,900 students, educators, and business leaders. The school’s companies, Port

& Co. and Karuna Port, were two of more than 100 firms that represented the virtual economy on Long Island. Firms competed in trade show booth design, salesmanship, impact marketing and more. Both firms chose students to present their business plan and field questions about

their company in front of a panel of judges. Port & Co. received a gold award in website design. Both firms will attend the international trade show in Brooklyn in April, which brings together 5,000 students from 18 states and nine countries.

Theater Students Take A Trip Cast members of Northport High School’s upcoming production of Chicago performed the opening number, “All That Jazz” alongside Broadway star Mary Claire King on Jan. 10. The high school theater students took a trip to New

York to attend a workshop with cast members of the Broadway musical production of Chicago. Mary Claire King, who plays Liz and is the understudy for Velma Kelly, helped the students with vocals and choreography. To close the workshop,

the students had the opportunity to have a Q & A with Mary Claire King and the piano accompanist. Following the workshop, the students took their seats in the Ambassador Theatre to watch the Broadway production.

Harborfields musicians from elementary school through high school took center stage at Northport High School on Jan. 17 for the 15th annual Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association’s Day of Horn. Harborfields’ students joined student and adult French horn players from across Suffolk County and surrounding areas for the concert, but also enjoyed a performance

by Dr. Heidi Lucas, an associate professor of Horn at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Participating students included Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School students Ryan Hernandez and Isla Kenney; Oldfield Middle School students Dean Mason, Christian Maughan and Ethan Wisoky; and Harborfields High School students Danielle Barber

and Meghan O’Brien. Additionally, Harborfields music faculty member, Cathy Ferraro, joined these students in this unique gathering. “Harborfields French horn players from elementary school through high school represented our district with pride,” High School Music Director Daniel Bilawsky said.

Students Of The Month Congratulations to John H. Glenn High School students Jake Lauto, Adiya Rehman, Andrew Nguyen and Samara Schipper who were recently selected as December Students of the Month. Every month, students from the freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior classes are nominated by their classmates to receive the honor, which is based on students’ character, integrity and leadership qualities. As a senior, Samara Schipper has taken four Advanced Placement classes, including chemistry, government, statistics and calculus. She also dedicates a great deal of her time to the high school band and plans to play on the school’s varsity lacrosse

team this spring. “I work to portray my best self as a student and as a friend every day,” she said. Like Samara, junior Andrew Nguyen has also taken four Advanced Placement and two pre-AP classes this year. However, he still finds time to partake in two clubs – Knights for Nature and Ultimate Frisbee – as well as play on the school’s tennis team. He is also a percussionist in the high school band and marching band. “Overall, this year is certainly stressful, but manageable,” he said. Sophomore Adiya Rehman also likes to challenge herself as a member of the international and independent science research clubs. She is also a member of the school’s a cappella group,

Acapellawood. “I like to be involved with extracurricular activities to feel a part of the Elwood Community,” she said. Jake Lauto, the freshmen class’s Student of the Month, also likes to involve himself in after school clubs, including yearbook, Knowledge Masters, science research and Mathletes. In addition to his extra curriculars, he is currently taking honors math, science and American Sign Language and is also an active Boy Scout. “I try to live the Scout Law every day, which is, ‘A Scout is trustworthy, loyal helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverend,’ he said. “I feel like a high-five, a nice hello and a smile can really make someone happy.”
