Nestled alongside the shores of beautiful Sebago Lake in Casco, Maine, Camp Sunshine (www.campsunshine.org) offers children with lifethreatening illnesses and their families a place to relax together for a week and to take a break from the extraordinary demands placed on them on a daily basis. The year-round program is free of charge and staffed almost entirely by volunteers. It is the only program in the nation whose mission is to address the impact of a life-threatening illness on every member of the immediate family. Since the opening of the Camp’s year-round campus in 2001, more ill children and their families have come from New York than any other state in the nation. In 2013, 148 families from New York, many from Long Island, attended the Camp. Even with multiple sessions being added annually at Camp Sunshine, there are still many more children from New York being newly diagnosed each year, jlynn@theneighbornewspapers.com Smith said.

Registration will get underway at noon with the dip set for 1 p.m. “This polar dip on Long Island will raise funds for Camp Sunshine and help more families from that area take advantage of our services,” said Michael Smith, Camp Sunshine’s Director of Special Events. “The reality of this event is that the discomfort our plungers feel for just a moment will never compare to what our families go through during the course of their child’s illness.” He added, “It’s for the families and children that we plunge – we call it Freezin’ for a Reason.” Those unable or not willing to submerge in near-freezing water can still participate in the Chicken Dip. Chicken dippers are still required to raise the minimum of $100 to participate, but only

Do they make any sense, or are they simply random collections of people in mystery places, moving wordlessly through your subconscious with no clear direction or purpose? To say there were many interesting – disturbing, even – discussions would be an understatement. And those were just the dreams my fellow students recalled! A dream is a wish your heart makes, or so the saying goes – but what of nightmares and other less desirable visions? What do they mean? Should any conclusions be drawn, or are they simply beyond the scope of human comprehension? And what of the dreams that fall into oblivion, never to be revisited again? I often find myself falling into and out of various

states of sleep, tossing and turning from one bizarre dream to the next, vaguely aware of the people and places surrounding me, but rarely discerning any viable plot from the whole scenario. The thing is, I rarely recall these visions by the time the new day dawns. There and gone, perhaps to be revisited at a later date. Or not. It’s a fairly exciting concept, when you stop and think of the mysterious majesty of it all – the subconscious, delving into the unconscious, and back again. Too deep? Brain on overload? Maybe it’s time for a little nap!

Fundraising efforts are underway for the Long Island Polar Dip to benefit Camp Sunshine on Saturday, March 1st at Crab Meadow Beach in Huntington. Participants will plunge into the frigid waters of Long Island Sound to raise money to help send more New York families to Camp Sunshine, a one-of-a-kind national retreat in Casco, Maine for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. Every polar dip participant is encouraged to raise a minimum of $100 in pledges. The Long Island Polar Dip has again partnered with CrowdRise, a popular online fundraising platform, to make it easier for the entire community to unite, support and fundraise for Camp Sunshine. Craving Community Involvement

The first half of my school year has ended, and I have realized that I have started to crave more community involvement. To satisfy this urge to take part in more activities, I have begun to revive the South Shore Hookers Rugby Club. Essentially, for the past few seasons, this club has been defunct. Now, with the assistance of my brother and friends, I am striving to bring back a team that was once a staple of Suffolk County’s Rugby scene. Since I was a toddler, my father has taught me the basics of the sport, and I have taught my

friends. Playing on the field, I have developed a keen sense of peripheral vision. I have to be keenly aware of not only what’s in front of me, but also where my teammates are, and what everyone is doing on the field. I follow the same perspective in my academic studies. This helps me understand context, and has helped me solve challenging problems by looking beyond the obvious. The only setback that I have come across so far, is that we are lacking size. We have around fifteen or twenty guys, but we need twenty five to make a competitive

team. Essentially, I am reaching out to other members of the community to play on our team. As it is a U18 league, all players have to be under eighteen years of age. If you want to play on the South Shore Hookers, you must also live within driving distance of East Islip, as we practice at Hecksher Park. Donation Recognized Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone recently recognized Eric Freedman and Freedman Jewelers for donating $1,500 to defray the costs of adding names to the Vietnam Wall in Veterans Plaza at Town Hall. Last Fall, Supervisor Petrone announced that the Town was reopening the Wall and would begin accepting names to be added to the monument for the first time in five years. The Town will continue to collect names throughout 2014 and will have the unveiling of the new plaque in 2015, to honor the 40th anniversary of the end of hostilities of the Vietnam War. To be eligible, a person must have served in the military during

the Vietnam War era and lived in Huntington for six months at any time in their life. The application process also includes a $15 donation to defray expenses. Mr. Freedman’s contribution will cover the donation for approximately 100 persons. Although Mr. Freedman did not serve in the Vietnam War, he is making his donation in memory of friends who did and who did not return home. Mr. Freedman is the owner of Freedman Jewelers on New York Avenue in Huntington Village, having purchased the business from his father’s estate in 1969. At the February 4th Town Board meeting, Supervisor Petrone described Mr. Freedman as “a good

neighbor and a person who has always come forward” and accepted Mr. Freedman’s check on behalf of the veterans whose names will be added to the memorial. Originally unveiled in 2003, the wall currently lists the names of 1,112 Vietnam War veterans who live or lived in Huntington. That includes persons on the original three plaques and those who were added in the subsequent five years before the wall was closed in 2008 and a fourth plaque was installed. Supervisor Petrone decided to reopen the wall after speaking with representatives from the Huntington High School Class of 1964 preparing for their 50th reunion. They hoped to add the names of 20 classmates to the wall.

After the loss of someone very close, those around us are caring and concerned, making every effort to shield us from the hurt, and try to lessen our heartbreak. But at times, it just takes a quiet moment with a special someone or discovering something, anything, offering comfort or some relief from the grief, loneliness and unbearable ache. The “something” could be as simple as the warmth of an old, somewhat worn and familiar cup filled with hot and inviting morning coffee. It appears as though each sip relieves some of the pain, even sharing the anguish while stirring emotions which, not surprisingly, leave you feeling a little drained and empty.

Adding a bit of sugar is a little reminder to reﬂect on those sweet times you shared in your life together, understanding that right now nothing seems quite right, nor appears to make any sense. As you stir your coffee, inhale the aroma and savor your memories, knowing the cup will soon be empty; and although there will always be an empty place in your heart, the images of the life you shared will gradually replace the sorrow. Listen to a sort of musical reminder as the spoon circles and brushes against the sides of the cup, and you will never forget that you will always cherish and embrace your old memories, while knowing the cup may empty today, but will fill with new memories each tomorrow. For now, just wake each morning with the thought “good morning sweetheart….let’s have a nice cup of coffee.” It’s OK!
