Long Island Polar Dip Fundraising efforts are underway for the Long Island Polar Dip to benefit Camp Sunshine on Sunday, March 1st, at Crab Meadow Beach in Huntington. Participants will plunge into the frigid waters of Long Island Sound to raise money to help send more

New York families to Camp Sunshine, a one-of-a-kind national retreat in Casco, Maine for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. Every polar dip participant is encouraged to raise a minimum of $100 in pledges. The Long Island Polar

Souper Food Drive Inspired by Super Bowl XLIX, Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District held their first annual “Soup-er Bowl” Food Drive from January 21st through February 2nd. Orchestrated by the school’s Acts of Kindness Committee, students,

faculty and staff donated cans of soup and other canned foods while voting for the team they thought would win in this year’s Super Bowl. Students who contributed to the food drive placed their cans in bins representing the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots. During daily

announcements, Principal Maureen Kelly provided updates on the team with the most canned goods. “The students and staff were extremely motivated to help their community and help their team win Washington Drive’s ‘Souper Bowl’ Food Drive,” said speech teacher Jennifer Pennisi.

Energetic About Energy Through interactive science demonstrations presented by Science Plus, Inc.’s “The Dirtmeister,” students at Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District explored different forms of energy and its impact on our lives. During the presentation, students examined mechanical, chemical, heat, light and electric

energy and explored how it can be transferred and transformed. Steve Tomecek, known as The Dirtmeister, used individual and group participation to demonstrate energy in action with simple science experiments. In addition, students learned about the roles potential and kinetic energy play in keeping

the world in motion. To conclude the show, The Dirtmeister, performed a bottle rocket experiment, which encompassed all the different forms of energy working together. “We hope the students learn that science is everyday, hands-on experiences,” said secondgrade teacher Marie Fenter.

Hour Of Code As part of Computer Science Education Week, 76 fifth-grade LEAP (Lahey Enrichment Acamdeic Program) students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School had an opportunity to assume the role of computer scientists during the international Hour of Code initiative. The Hour of Code is a global movement that provides students with a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. The

program offers a variety of interactive computer activities that help students learn computer science while nurturing problemsolving skills, logic and creativity. Nestled alongside the shores of beautiful Sebago Lake in Casco, Maine, Camp Sunshine ( w w w. c a m p s u n s h i n e . org) offers children with life-threatening illnesses and their families a place to relax together for a week and to take a break from the extraordinary demands placed on them on a daily basis.

The year-round program is free of charge and each session is staffed with the assistance of 80 volunteers. It is the only program in the nation whose mission is to address the impact of a life-threatening illness on every member of the immediate family. Since the opening of the Camp’s year-round campus in 2001, more ill children and their families have come from New York

than any other state in the nation. In 2013, 152 families from New York, many from Long Island, attended the Camp. Even with multiple sessions being added annually at Camp Sunshine, there are still many more children from New York being newly diagnosed each year, Smith said. Camp Sunshine’s program continues to be recommended by the following New York
