Sure, I understand the anxiety which can come from being forced to travel in such conditions – to a degree. But when a few select drivers and their inability to, you know, drive are the cause? Well, that’s where I lose patience. I’m pretty sure they teach this stuff in driver’s ed, in defensive driving courses – or in the big old handbook known as common sense. It’s not rocket science people. #1. You need to see the road, so clean windows and mirrors are a must. #2. The rest of us need to see the road as well, so having an 18-inch clump of snow fly off the back of someone’s car into your windshield… not the most conducive to aforementioned point. #3. Brakes do not respond well on wet pavement, snow or ice – so it is best to
I’m willing to go out on a limb to say that even those who would count winter as their favorite season do not enjoy driving in the snow and icy conditions it brings, especially if they live on Long Island. Just the other morning, after a surprise helping of the white stuff, I was reminded of the joys of a morning commute in about six inches of slush… The privilege of driving behind those with an aversion to cleaning off their rooftops and back windows… The honor of inching behind drivers who seem to think that to surpass 20 mph would be criminal… The thrill of testing out my brakes every car length or so, as people ahead come to a screeching halt due to…what, exactly? I couldn’t tell you.

refrain from slamming on them for no good reason. Simply letting up on the gas pedal and, oh yes, steering can work wonders. These are just a few of the more important points I encountered on my journey to work, on a 20-mile straight stretch of road with no fewer than a dozen or so drivers wreaking havoc. We’ve been fortunate this winter, but that’s not to say we have been – or will be – spared completely. A few more morning or evening rush hours like that, and we’ll all be counting down the days to spring. As our population ages, more and more spouses, adult children and friends find themselves in the role of caregiver to a loved one suffering from a chronic, often catastrophic health condition. There are an estimated 65.7 Americans caring for someone who is ill, disabled or aged, according the AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving. VOLUNTEER EFFORT - The Afterschool Group (TAG) at H.B. Mattlin Middle School recently volunteered to create get well cards for patients at North Shore LIJ Plainview Hospital. Together, the students created many cards, but were inspired to do even more for the patients. The club opened up the project to the entire school, inviting every student in the building to create a special get well card. The students collected over 200 cards for the hospital while learning a valuable lesson in the small actions they can take to make a positive difference.

The Boy Scouts of the Matinecock District headed locally to find perfect weather for their annual Polar Bear Camporee – and they found it at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp, in Wading River, during the January 29th through 31st weekend’s adventures where they had been warned that they would need to “Use your winter camping skills as your troop participates in the fun of the Matinecock District’s Polar Bear Camporee/ Scouting skills competition as a part of every station as patrols haul their sleds along the Camporee Trail. It will be culinary skills versus weather conditions as entries prepared for the best dessert competition.” The temperatures fluctuated between a “balmy” 48 degrees during the daytime and a “cool” 28 degrees overnight. The 467 youths and their adult volunteer scouting leaders from 23 of the 28 Boy Scout Troops and one Venture Crew in the Town of Huntington and the western section
of Smithtown Township (Commack, Kings Park, and Hauppauge) participated in the event, as members of 69 patrols competed at five Scouting activities. The timed events included fire building, knots at the “Bear Bag station, 2-man saw “Lumberjack” station, 6-foot “snowshoes” communications event, an obstacle course, and teamwork -- all testing the patrol’s scouting skills. As the Host Troop for the Polar Bear, the scouts of Troop 52 (Northport) developed and ran each of the five station activities, following the weekend’s patriotic theme of “Red, White, and Blue.” The scouts enjoyed the challenges of the Polar Bear Camporee by being properly prepared. They cooked hot meals over campfires at their individual Troop campsites. Almost all of the 23 Scout Troops and Crews camped overnight in tents and cabins. The Matinecock Boy Scout Troops that participated in the annual 2016 Polar Bear Camporee winter competitions were:

Following the tragic bombing at the 16th Street Church, he said he was determined to join other young students in a peaceful march through the streets of Birmingham. But first, he sought his parents’ permission to march. “At first, they were against it. But the next day, my father gave his permission,” Dr. Hrabowski said. “They told me they prayed about it, but in the end, they supported me.” That support from family and community is a cornerstone of his concept of empowering young people “On a day when we celebrate the achievements of Dr. King,” he said, “I would encourage our young people to dream
big. Dream about the possibilities… decide what you want to do in life. And then, think about what it takes to reach that dream. What I took away from the [civil rights] movement was the importance of dreaming about the possibilities,” he said. “Children have an enormous capacity to think and act. That’s what we want parents and teachers to remember.” A noted researcher and author, Dr. Hrabowski’s research and publications focus on science and math education, with emphasis on minority participation and performance. He was recently named by President Obama to chair the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans. For the 46th consecutive year, Northwell Health employees gathered to honor the teachings and vision of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The ceremony, held at North Shore University Hospital’s Rust Auditorium, was simulcast to other Northwell facilities across the New York/ metro area. This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, president of UMBC (The University of Maryland, Baltimore County) and a child leader in the civil rights movement, who was featured in Spike Lee’s 1997 documentary, Four Little Girls, the story of the 1963 bombing of Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church. His presentation focused on the importance of inspiring young people to take action. Dr. Hrabowski spoke to students who had been invited to the event saying: “Each of us ifthe product of our childhood experiences.
RETIREE HONORED - After serving Suffolk County for 48 years in the Police Department Detective Lieutenant Thomas O’Heir has decided to retire effective February 2nd. In order to honor him for his service, Legislator Leslie Kennedy presented him with a proclamation with the County Seal fixed upon it to recognize his long-time service to the community. Detective Lieutenant O’Heirs’ long and accomplished career began in 1968 after graduating the Police Academy; Thomas O’Heir was initially assigned to the 1st Precinct. Through the years, he has been assigned to various precincts throughout the County and has advanced through the ranks. He now retires as a Detective Lieutenant from the 4th Precinct in Hauppauge.

Phoenix Award Gala Set North Shore Horse Rescue & Sanctuary (NSHR), a local ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) non-profit horse shelter, is hosting its Second Annual Phoenix Award Gala on Friday, March 4th, at 7 p.m. This year’s event will honor the Novak Family, owners of the Long Island Game Farm – Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo (LIGF), for their outstanding work in promoting prevention, health, humane practice and advocacy for all animals. The Novak Family and the NSHR Board of Directors invite all Long Island animal lovers to join them for the event, which is taking place at Giorgio’s, located at 100 Fox Hill Drive in Baiting Hollow, New York. This Annual Gala aims to raise the additional funds necessary for year-round care of its permanent and fostered horses. The organization also welcomes volunteers of all ages and experience levels, though anyone age 14 to 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and younger horse lovers may apply to volunteer as part of a group-based day project through youth clubs or school classes. LIGF President Diane Novak and her daughter
Melinda Novak, Vice President of LIGF, are being honored for their animal education efforts through programs at the zoo, as well as for their support of NSHR. “We are truly thrilled to be honored with this recognition and award,” says Melinda Novak. “Everyone at the park works especially hard to inspire educational values for our visitors – young and old – and to maintain the safety and health of our animals. Our interactive experiences, combined with the overall passion of our staff, encourages others to become global citizens and to promote animal welfare. North Shore Horse Rescue is a great example of professional advocacy and we are delighted to receive such an honor.” Founded by Laurel Palermo and Tom Renzetti in 2002, NSHR began as a small boarding facility known as Gold Rush Farms. The pair rescued their first horse, Phoenix, in 2003 after finding the five-year-old mustang mare pregnant and neglected, which ultimately led to the formation of the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. NSHR relies solely on its 100 percent volunteer base to operate the facilities each day and support of its continued
mission of saving the lives of abandoned, abused and unwanted horses, many of which are up for slaughter. The ultimate mission of the organization is to find loving, informed homes for these gentle giants, while also committing to allowing permanent residents to live out their lives in a safe, stress-free environment. Funded in part by grants from the ASPCA, the farm is also verified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. The North Shore Horse Rescue’s Second Annual Phoenix Award Gala includes a sit-down dinner, with a cocktail hour and subsequent reception. Dress attire is requested.
