Fresh Air summers are filled with children running barefoot through the grass, gazing at starfilled skies and swimming for the first time. This summer, join volunteer host families in Suffolk County, and open your heart and home to a Fresh Air child. Each summer, thousands of children from New York City’s low-income communities visit suburban, rural and small town communities along the East Coast and Southern Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program. Harlen, age 9, has visited the Tornatore family for two summers. Host dad Albert shared, “Harlen has definitely learned to try new things. I remember our first summer. He was nervous but by the end of the first week, Harlen and my son were having adventures and having so much fun. We went to the aquarium, amusement park, and the kids love the beach.” “My kids get so excited when they get to see Harlen. This summer we went to a drive-in movie, and we were all in the backseat with blankets, pillows and popcorn, snuggled together. Harlen is simply part of our family,” says host mom Allyson. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, notfor-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from seven to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. The Town of Huntington has joined with the Huntington Public Library to bring a Little Free library to the lobby of Town Hall, allowing visitors and employees to take part in the free book exchange program that has been sweeping the world. The Public Library recently obtained and decorated one of the birdhouse-like boxes, which are about 18 inches long and 14 inches deep, and asked Supervisor Frank P. Petrone for permission to locate it in Town Hall. The Supervisor readily agreed. The Library stocked the box with the initial offerings, an eclectic collection that included a James Patterson novel, “I, Michael, Bennett,” the novel “The Devil Wears Prada” by Lauren Weisberger, the children’s book “Disney Bedtime Favorites” and the satiric collection “1,000 Unforgettable Senior Moments.” Going forward, visitors and employees are encouraged to take one of the books in the box and exchange it for a book they have finished reading and would like to share. The books are free; there is no need to check a book out or sign for it, and anyone taking one of the books can keep it. The Library will periodically check the box to make sure it is stocked with a range of offerings for adults, children and teens. “This is a great way for people to help their unwanted books find new homes and for them to obtain books they have wanted to read for some time or to explore new authors,” Supervisor Petrone said. “I thank the Huntington Public Library for bringing the Little Free Library to Town Hall.” Library director Joanne Adam said, “At the Huntington Public Library, we encourage literacy in many different ways, whether it be through books from our library or through exchanges like The Little Free Library. We hope this will encourage people

Winning Essay submissions, Madelyn’s essay was one that stuck out. “Madelyn wrote about a fireman, which was great, but there was a kick to her essay because the fireman was also her dad,” said Doug Cohen, Ducks assistant general manager/ senior vice president of sales. “We wanted to recognize her dad and also award Madelyn for her essay because it really impressed us.” A special assembly took place for the kindergartners where Mr. Cohen congratulated Madelyn on her essay and gave her the opportunity to read it to her peers. TD Bank representatives Eric Fishon and Robert Lashuk were also on
hand to award Madelyn with a $50 Visa gift card for her accomplishment. Madelyn’s parents, Louis and Lauren Moreno, cheered their daughter on during the event. Dressed in his bunker gear, Mr. Moreno answered many of the students’ questions. The Long Island Ducks mascot QuackerJack also made a special guest appearance which resulted in a loud applause from the students. Following the assembly, Madelyn’s entire class enjoyed a private autograph session with QuackerJack in their classroom and took home gift bags filled with items, courtesy of TD Bank and the Long Island Ducks.

Kindergartner Madelyn Moreno and her fellow classmates from Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District received a special visit from Long Island Ducks and TD Bank representatives on January 26th. Madelyn was recently selected as one of four winners and the first kindergarten student ever to win TD Banks annual essay contest, “Take a Duck to Class.” The essay prompt asked students to write about a hero in their community in 250 words or less and submit their entries to LIDucks.com this past fall. Madelyn dedicated her submission to her father, a volunteer firefighter. Out of thousands of student

Continued From 3 generations. It was started in 2009, when Hudson, Wisconsin resident Todd H. Bol built the first Little Free Library and placed it in his yard to honor his mother. The idea for the handmade book exchanges with the motto, “Take a book, return a book” took hold quickly, and the number of registered book exchanges has grown to more than 50,000 around the world, in all 50 states and 70 countries. The program is administered by the not-for-profit Little Free Library Ltd., which encourages the volunteer stewards who manage the book exchanges to register so their libraries can be found on the organization’s map. I ended last week’s column hoping that this month of February would bring with it a little more sunshine into all of our lives… While this is a nice sentiment, of course we know that life does not always work this way, and there are plenty of storm clouds to weather along the way. This just reinforces the notion that we must all take the time to appreciate the little things in life, the special moments, those people we love and the many memories we share, as we simply never know when they will become precisely that… just a faded memory among many others. After the passing of my grandfather nearly a year ago, and the subsequent sale of the
house that my grandparents had called home for more than 50 years, there was obviously much cleaning out and sorting through mementos to be done. In some ways, this was the most difficult task of all. To me, nearly everything held some sort of significance, some deep emotional attachment which evoked so many precious recollections of years gone by. Of course, these are just objects, material possessions which hardly make up for the loss of the person they are associated with. But the photographs… those are truly special. And boy, are there photographs. I, being of the slightly OCD nature, coupled with my fervent love of all things photography, volunteered to take on the initial task
of sorting through and cataloging the boxes upon boxes of albums, envelopes full of developed photos and a few dozen or so frames and collages. Several months later, I’ve barely made a dent in the process. But it doesn’t matter. There’s no rush where memories are concerned. They should be carefully recollected, and savored. Every single photograph tells a story; and every story unlocks a treasure trove of feelings and emotions – some happy, some sad, some wistful… all meaningful in their own respective ways. And winter, while it may not bring a lot of sunshine into our lives, is the perfect time to take a moment to appreciate all the memories that do.

Community Forum Set Residents of the Northport-East Northport School District are invited to a community forum on Wednesday, February 15th to learn about the proposed bond referendum. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will held at the William J. Brosnan School, located at 158 Laurel Avenue in Northport. The district will also continue its series of building tours for residents so that they can learn about the current conditions of the schools and the improvements proposed through the bond. A tour of the William J. Brosnan School is set for Monday, February 6th at 6:30 p.m. On Tuesday, February 7th,
tours will be provided at Northport Middle School at 6:30 p.m., Norwood Avenue Elementary School at 7:30 p.m. and Ocean Avenue at 8 p.m. “With the vote scheduled for Tuesday, February 28th, the district wants to provide residents with as much information as possible so that the community can make an informed choice at the polls,” said Superintendent of Schools Robert Banzer. The plan, totaling approximately $39.8 million, addresses improvements to basic building infrastructure items that are nearing the end of their useful life, as well as improved and

modernized instructional spaces to facilitate improved instruction. The proposal also includes renovations to the district’s physical education and athletic facilities for student and community use, as well as the addition of security vestibules at each building to increase student and staff safety. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Fifth Avenue, Dickinson Avenue and William J. Brosnan Schools.

Riding the Reading Wave Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School students kicked off their PARP (Pick A Reading Partner) week on January 20th with a tropical assembly. The school’s PARP theme titled “Ride the Reading Wave,” allowed students to take part in daily trivia challenges, raffles, prizes, themed days and reading contests throughout the week of January 23rd-27th. This school-wide reading goal is to receive back 99 percent of the reading pledges created to encourage students to read and have families pledge to read more than 100,000
minutes during the week of PARP. Students had the option to chose a reading level as a goal for the week. These levels ranged from Mini Wave Reader, a pledge to read a minimum of 20 minutes a day; Maverick Wave Reader, a pledge to read a minimum of 30 minutes a day; and Monster Wave Reader, a pledge to read a minimum of 40 minutes a day. During the kickoff assembly, PTA members and faculty members dressed in colorful beach attire and sang their own version of “Surfin’ USA,” titled “Ride the Reading

Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert will lead an open discussion and will encourage community members to give their input as the district begins to explore a possible bond referendum project for vote this fall. The goal is to develop a plan to address critical issues in the school buildings to ensure a safe, secure and comfortable learning environment for students.
In addition, community members are encouraged to share their input by participating in a survey about the potential bond referendum. The survey link will be posted to the district’s website, www.elwood. k12.ny.us beginning on February 10th and will be open for responses until March 10th.

Importance of Reading As part of the schools PARP (Parents As Reading Partners) program, Washington Drive Primary School students invited family members to the school’s annual Read-In Day January 27th. The PARP program stresses the importance of reading and encourages
students to read with a partner. The Read-In Day allowed family members to stop by the school to read books to their student or a group of students. Family members brought a blanket and a variety of books for the students to choose from. They then found a safe spot around
the school building to sit and read. Students took turns reading the books to their family members and peers. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Francesco Ianni also took part in the day by reading to a group of kindergartners in Mrs. Dini’s class.
Perfecting Play Elementary level students in the NorthportEast Northport School District received a lesson on new games to play during recess with the help of Curt Hinson, also known as Dr. Recess. Dr. Recess recently visited students and staff members at all six of the elementary schools to guide them in play and speak to staff members about his work. With more than 34 years of teaching experience, Dr.
Recess has visited districts all across the United States to provide a new way to help children learn, grow, develop and live healthy lives through play. During each of his visits to the schools, he led assemblies based on grade levels and presented students with new and fun ways to go out and play. With the help of some student volunteers, he demonstrated games such as Keep Away, Hoop Ball,
Knock Down, Catch Five, Drop 21 and Hoop Guard. Students then played these games themselves in the playground during their recess period. Dr. Recess also met with staff members to share his six steps to a trouble-free playground and his philosophy of ways to support students while promoting self responsibility, intrinsic motivation and inclusion style teaching.

Announced by Governor Cuomo in August, the $16 million Clean Energy Communities initiative supports local government leaders across the State to implement energy efficiency, renewable energy and sustainable development projects in their communities. Clean Energy Communities advances the Governor’s Reforming the Energy strategy by demonstrating the importance of communities in helping New York reach its Clean Energy Standard of 50 percent of the state’s electricity coming from renewable energy resources by 2030.
Cities, counties, towns and villages that complete at least four of 10 high-impact clean energy actions are designated Clean Energy Communities and are eligible to apply for funding of up to $250,000 with no local cost share and with the option of receiving up to 25 percent paid in advance to support additional clean energy projects. At least two of the four actions must have been completed after August 1, 2016. NYSERDA is accepting applications for funding on a rolling basis through September 30, 2019 or until funds are exhausted, whichever comes first. Black History Program The Town of Huntington will mark the 30th anniversary of its Black History Month celebrations February 16th with a special program featuring the World Premiere of “Harriet, Rosa and Me,” a thought-provoking, inspiring and witty theatrical presentation written and directed by acclaimed playwright and entertainer JD Lawrence. Set in a local city bus stop, the show tells the story of a young lady named Hope who decides to skip school to avoid a Black History exam she refused to study for. As she lets several buses pass without getting on them, she notices another
young lady, Rosa, who’s not getting on the bus as well - for an entirely different reason. As the two make small talk, Rosa informs Hope who she is as well as the importance of Black History and why Hope should get on the bus. However, when Hope reluctantly rejects Rosa’s candid advice, Hope decides to take the subway that’s just feet away from the bus stop. As she leaves the bus depot, she comes face to face with Harriet and is once again reminded of the importance of Black History, but this time the gloves are off as no-holdsbarred Harriet gives Hope a dose of reality. Will Hope get on the bus or will she
let a life lesson pass her by? Lawrence, the recipient of the 2017 NAACP Legacy Award, is a singersongwriter, playwright, actor, comedian, author, director and producer of films, television and stage plays who has been called “The King of Dramedy.” He has mastered the art of improvisation infused with drama, comedy, and music. He has repeatedly performed to sold-out audiences across the country and is the only playwright to write, sing, direct, produce, score and perform over seven different characters in his own production in Las Vegas’ Planet Hollywood. Lawrence has written,
directed and starred in more than 15 nationally acclaimed touring productions. The Town of Huntington has earned a Clean Energy Community designation, making the Town eligible to apply for $250,000 in state funding that can be applied to future energy projects. The designation is part of the statewide Clean Energy Communities initiative, which on Long Island is made possible through a partnership between the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and PSEG Long Island. It recognizes the Town’s leadership in reducing energy use, cutting costs and driving clean energy. Huntington is the second municipality on Long Island and the sixth statewide to receive the designation, which requires a municipality to complete four of 10 clean energy actions, at least two of them after August 1st, 2016. In Huntington’s case, those four actions were: Establishing the Solarize Huntington program, a group purchasing and community education program that leveraged the collective buying

Five Tips On Moving (NAPSI)—According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 12 percent of Americans move to new homes every year. The next time you’re among them, you may be able to save time, trouble and money when you choose a professional mover—you won’t have to worry about renting equipment, paying hidden costs, handling heavy or bulky items and being responsible if something goes wrong. 1. Be wary of any “guaranteed” estimates offered over the phone or online. Make sure you show the mover everything that needs to be moved, and get at least three estimates to compare. Avoid any that are too high or too low. 2. Check the company’s ratings with the Better Business Bureau and other consumer websites, and ask family and friends for referrals. 3. Make sure all agreements are in writing, and get a copy of everything
you sign, especially the bill of lading. Never sign any blank forms. 4. Ask questions if you don’t understand something, and make sure your mover has your cell phone number to reach you. 5.
