Musical Accolades During their first board of education meeting of 2018, the Elwood Union Free School District recognized two students of merit who have excelled in music. Elizabeth Choi, a junior at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School and a dedicated violinist, was recognized for being selected for the All-State Symphony Orchestra. Elizabeth is the concertmaster of the John Glenn Orchestra and Chamber Strings, attends Manhattan School of Music’s pre-college program and is an active

HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. Upon sponsoring a child, you will receive a photo and bio of them, and you can write letters/send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages to brighten their days. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. Leaving a (Paw) Print I recently received an e-mail for an event listing from a teacher at my old high school, which sparked a conversation about how many years it’s been since I roamed those very hallways myself {approaching 18, nearly half of my lifetime} and how it might be nice to stop by to say hello to the relatively few teachers who remain there after all this time. Which got me to thinking… there was a time when my fellow alumni and I couldn’t wait to “visit” after we graduated, popping in every few months or so to see what was new and exciting in the world of Lindy High. As the years passed, college came and went, and we found ourselves employed in our various fields of study, these encounters became few and far between. We no longer related to those teenagers who breezed by on their way to class, nor did we

see high school as the center of the only universe we had ever inhabited. We now had the world before us, one that included days not marked by a bell schedule, job descriptions not dictated by a syllabus. Sure, there was the occasional visit to the old college campus now; perhaps a special “guest” speaking engagement to a group of soon-to-be grads about to embark on their own adventures into the great world of career exploration. But that was where the academic connection ceased. Fast forward nearly two decades past these formative years, and the nostalgia for simpler times has returned. Having the opportunity to reconnect with those friends and former classmates has taken on added significance as the years have passed. Several have left us far too soon; others’ lives have taken

them to the far reaches of the country, making the advent of social media a welcome - and perhaps the only - connection. But among the hundreds that we graduated with, there are also the dozens who still reside right here on Long Island, instantly reachable and available to reminisce at any time. It’s a comforting thought, that ability to pick up where you left off at a given point, to chat about old times and new pursuits, and to realize - with rare exception - that we are all dealing with the same daily struggle to find that sense of fulfillment that was promised to us all those years ago. Perhaps a visit to the old high school stomping grounds is in order; a “refresher course,” if you will, courtesy of the very place where it all began. As they like to say in Lindy… once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog…

“I believe all things happen for a reason” Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, said to me as we sat down to talk more in-depth about this international non-profit. It was not by coincidence that he and his wife crossed paths with Lawrence Hohler, retired Smithtown East HS teacher, and Joseph Kirima, primary school teacher in Kenya, to learn about what those two educators came together in hopes to form: a Kenyan orphanage. Hope Children’s Fund operates with the motto “Education Is Key” and for children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Mann explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family, hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. One of their favorites is of a young lady named Betty Gakii who entered their orphanage when she was little, did well and became a teacher, later got married and had children of her own, and now is the Administrative Assistant at this same orphanage! Kevin feels that he and his wife have received and learned much more from the orphans than they’ve given and taught them. With that being said, if you would like to help change the lives of orphans in Kenya, you can!

In June, teams will compete in a Long Island-wide competition at the Cradle of Aviation Museum. In this competition, students are judged not only on how fast their creations can move, but on elements such as creativity, innovation, quality of work and more. During their first meeting at Northport High School, teams went through the beginning stages of creating their solar-powered vehicles. Students sketched out plans, cut and soldered materials, and started to

Summer Art Adventures

Now in its 23rd year, the Art League’s Summer Art Adventure Program has provided artful summer experiences for thousands of children and teens. The summer program will now take place at the Forest Park Elementary School at 30 DeForest Road in Dix Hills. Forest Park Elementary school will come alive with art and kids once again this summer, as kids and young teens ages 5-14 explore a variety of art mediums, famous artists, and genres. Kids ages 5-10 can participate in one or all of the five weekly themed sessions, beginning the week of July 9th. Themes include “Melting Pot,” “Animal Masquerade,” “Mystery Art Ingredient,” “Rio Grande Adventures” and “Magical Garden.”

A favorite for more than two decades is animal week where students have the opportunity to create a work of art from live animal models. Mature Artists in the 11-14 year old group can attend one or both twoweek sessions. Mature Artists will broaden their horizons learning new techniques and skills based on the weekly themes outlined in the younger age groups. All programs are taught by certified teachers and trained assistants. An art show at the end of each session celebrates the Summer Art Adventurer’s accomplishments. Over the years many young Summer Art Adventurers have continued their immersion into the arts by moving up to Summer Pre-College

Portfolio sessions offered at the Art League’s art center in Dix Hills. Two three-week sessions begin July 9th and 30th, and offer prospective college applicants the opportunity to build a winning art portfolio necessary for admission to the best fine arts programs in the country. The Art League of Long Island is a not-for-profit visual arts organization providing a full schedule of classes, workshops, exhibits, and events for Long Islanders since 1955. Left to right now has a different angle; nothing is straight anymore, and we’re caught in the middle of what is and what was, and the way our children are now being taught. We can’t fly with just one single wing; we need the left and right to make it safe and sound. Without both wings holding together, I’m afraid we’ll never leave the ground. Blindness, dark and dreary days now; rosy glasses won’t help us see the light. If we don’t stop this madness now, then it will be too late to set things right. Left to right once seemed so easy; up and down and circles, freaking out. God, we need some help here, we forgot what life is all about.

During the month of January, eighth-grade teacher Mary-Lynn Karpenske at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District hosted a “Souper Bowl” food drive. Each month, Ms. Karpenske challenges her students to tackle a

“mission possible” that encourages them to give back to the community, or to build character. This month, their mission was inspired by the “Souper Bowl of Caring,” which is a youth-led movement to help hungry and hurting people around the world. Throughout January,

In addition, a large number of new toys were collected for Toys for Tots. The Huntington Club chooses to support four different local charities every year, with the contributions split between the December and June meetings. The Club conducts various fundraisers throughout the year to raise these funds through silent auctions, craft fairs, bake sales, a boutique and monthly rafﬂes. In addition to monthly luncheons, the club hosts a number of trips across the area. The Huntington Club, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization comprised of approximately 200 women who are dedicated to supporting worthy local charities while enjoying numerous social events. ALS Awareness

Former Northport teacher and local inspiration Chris Pendergast recently visited schools throughout the Northport-East Northport district. Mr. Pendergast has been fighting ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, for many years. He is a remarkable and tenacious individual who is using his situation to help raise awareness for the ALS cause. He hopes to contribute to one day finding a cure. Northport High School English teachers Pamela Uruburu and Elizabeth Sherwood were recently named Educators of Excellence by the New

York State English Council for the 2016-2017 school year. Uruburu and Sherwood were honored at the NYSEC’s conference in Albany this past fall.

“I’m deeply honored by this recognition,” said Ms. Uruburu, “and after 28 years as an educator, I’m still excited by each new year’s possibilities.”

The Quilt Code quilts, and how they were often used as maps on the Underground Railroad. Students discovered the different symbols used on the quilts, as well as their meanings - such as the wagon wheel, tumbling blocks and the bear’s paw. Students were then taught the basics of sewing in order to make their own square to contribute to the class quilt. “Only the people who used the Underground Railroad knew what the symbols meant,” said

computer enabled him to type using his eyes, and to speak with a computerized voice. Students were amazed at this technology and at his ability to type quickly using only his eyes. Mr. Iannuzzi shared Mr. Pendergast’s story, informing students about his initial symptoms, the effects of the disease and how miraculous it is the Mr. Pendergast is still able to travel around to spread awareness. In addition, he explained Ride for Life – the charity that Mr. Pendergast formed four years after he was diagnosed with ALS. “Chris is living proof that if you dedicate your life to a cause, you can make a difference,” said Mr. Iannuzzi.

In honor of Black History Month, third-graders in Noreen Paccione’s class at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District worked together to create a class quilt. Students in Ms. Paccione’s class have been learning about the Underground Railroad and the contributions of African Americans throughout history. During their study, students learned about the creation of

Term Limits Approved The Huntington Town Board, at its January 23rd meeting, approved limiting elected Town officials to three four-year terms. The measure, which applies to all persons elected in 2017 and after, affects the Town Supervisor, the members of the Town Council, the Town Clerk, Receiver of Taxes and Highway Superintendent. “This is a way to bring new people, and new ideas to government,” Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci said about the resolution, which was sponsored by Councilman Eugene Cook. In other action, the Board:

appointed LeahMichelle Jefferson as director of the Huntington Community Development Agency approved live broadcasting of Town Board, Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals meetings. Westy Self Storage in East Northport proudly hosted General Needs Ltd New Volunteer KickOff & Orientation Event. General Needs Ltd is a nonprofit organization that provides basic necessities to the 5,000+ homeless Long Island Veterans and their families. The well attended event provided much information on the group’s vast services. The Executive Board was present to greet everyone and answer any questions. The General Needs Committees, ranging from Financial, Distribution, Fundraising, Grants, Legal, Publicity, Purchasing, Speakers, Volunteers and Warehouse, were also on hand to describe their roles and offer support

and services. There was a detailed presentation given by Lonnie Sherman, President, General Needs outlining their mission, history and growth.
