The Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL), the largest league in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA), has donated 1,130 pounds of food to Long Island Cares, Inc., The Harry Chapin Food Bank. The food was collected through donations by players, parents, coaches and spectators during the LIJSL Food Drive at the Peter Collins Soccer Park on Old Country Road in Plainview throughout the 2013 Fall Season. “On behalf of all of the children and families served by Long Island Cares, Elana Sissons, Food Drive Coordinator, and I are truly grateful for your support,” said Paule Pachter, Executive Director of Long Island Cares. “This donation will go a long way towards ensuring that more Long Island children and families do not go hungry.”
Long Island Cares has distributed more than six million pounds of food to over 500 member agencies across Long Island but also seeks to heighten public awareness about hunger and provides skills training to foster self-sufficiency among the population. Founded by singer Happy Chapin in 1980, a year before his untimely passing, their mission is a hunger-free Long Island. “The Long Island Junior Soccer League is proud to partner with Long Island Cares in their fight against hunger,” said LIJSL President Addie Mattei-
Iaia. “We are so grateful to all of our clubs, teams, players and families for their generosity. They have shown time and again that they are willing to go above and beyond, not only to be the best players they can be on the field, but to be the best people they can be off it.” The LIJSL will be holding another food drive during the 2014 Spring Season. Donations will be accepted in the food collection barrels at the entrance to the Collins Soccer Park for games being played there starting on March 29th and concluding in June.

St. Johnland Nursing Center in Kings Park formally recognized its long-serving nursing and administrative staff with a special dinner and award ceremony. CEO Mary Jean Weber commended the honorees for their dedication, compassion and commitment to St. Johnland’s residents, and praised them for working together as a team. Honored for 45 years of service was Margaret Frawley of Kings Park. Diane Butterworth of
Kings Park and AnneMarie Lowry of St. James celebrated 40 years, Linda Schombs (Kings Park) 30 years, and Patricia Corradengo (North Babylon), Deborah Ellis (Brentwood) and Charlene Zimmer (East Northport) were recognized for being at St. Johnland for 25 years. Also honored were four retirees: Diane Bosco of Lake Grove, Arlene March of Levittown, Joyce Reyes of St. James and Sharon Rogers of Mastic. In addition, 36 other

Ride The Reading Wave Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School students in the Harborfields Central School District took part in the Parents as Reading Partners’ Ride the Reading Wave celebration, which kicked off with an interactive assembly. Students made a pledge to read with parents at home every day. They were encouraged to choose the reading level they wished to aspire to: mini wave reader (20 minutes daily), maverick wave reader (30 minutes daily) or monster
wave reader (40 minutes daily). They also participated in fun in-school activities, such as Guest Reader Day, during which guests visited the classrooms and read; Wear Red Day to honor reading every day; and Drop Everything and Read Day. During DEAR Day, students carried a book with them all day and stopped to read when they were signaled at an undisclosed time. The schoolwide goal is to read more than 100,000
Keynote Speaker Set DuWayne Gregory, the first person of color to be elected presiding officer of the Suffolk County Legislature, will deliver the keynote address at the Town of Huntington’s 27th Annual Black History Month Celebration on February 6th. The program, which will begin at 7 p.m. at the Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School, 151 Lowndes Ave., Huntington Station, will also include musical numbers sung by Walt Whitman High School junior Kalif Jones; the Voices of Faith Missionary Youth Choir featuring Peter Marion; the Bethel AME Church Choir; and the Huntington Outreach Ministry. Poems will be read by Ronald Worrell and Kim Hallman. Presiding Officer Gregory was selected to lead the Legislature earlier this year, following three years as its majority leader, a position which he was also the first person of color to hold. Mr. Gregory has served in the County Legislature since 2008, representing a district that includes the diverse communities of Wheatley Heights, Wyandanch, North Amityville, parts

A native Long Islander, Mr. Gregory graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College with a degree in justice and public policy. Mr. Gregory enlisted in the United States Army in 1993 and, after attending Officer’s Candidate School, was commissioned a second lieutenant in field artillery. He spent five years in the service, primarily as a legal assistant stationed in Fort Hood, Texas. After his stint in the Army, Mr. Gregory was hired to work as the Town of Babylon’s Citizens’ Advocate. In that post, he ran the town’s constituent service operation. There he was tasked with running the equivalent of the town’s customer service department, responding to and solving problems for town residents. He also served as chief of staff for Suffolk Legis. Elie Mystal, whom he replaced in 2008 Presiding Officer Gregory served as chair of the Budget & Finance
Committee and won the Legislature’s approval for a gun offender registry that requires those convicted of violent crimes to notify law enforcement officials to help them identify and track down criminals that use firearms. The Common Core State Standards were created to ensure all students graduating from high school are capable of succeeding in college-level classes and in their careers. That overarching purpose is reflected in the details of your child’s report card by showing what a student is expected to know and your child’s progress toward those targets. Keep that in mind as you read through your child’s report card. As always, contact your child’s teacher with specific questions. “The great thing about Common Core and the way teachers will now be assessing students is that there is a big-picture goal in mind,” says Huntington. “This creates a perfect opportunity to notice your child’s strengths and progress, while keeping an eye on areas to work on.”
don’t get me wrong, but the idea of tailgating in the freezing cold – eh, not so appealing. Add to that the fact that my only NFL rooting interest lies in New England (yes, I know, blasphemy), and I have never actively pursued acquiring tickets to a game to this point. Of course, a few weeks back, when the Patriots still stood a chance of making it to the end, the thought briefly crossed my mind. Wouldn’t that be an incredible first football experience? Ah, but it was not to be. Instead, I, like millions of others, will be watching
the game from the comfort of my own home, on the couch, surrounded by snacks. I rarely have much of a rooting interest, but the broadcast is usually good for a few classic commercials and a fairly entertaining Halftime performance. We, as a collective society, will watch, discuss the highlights for a few days and then promptly forget who won, who even played, until next year when the football season revs up once again. And so it goes. On to more important things – like how many days ‘til pitchers and catchers report?
To all you high school students out there: we did it! The school year is officially half over. Midterms are done, and the third quarter has begun. As we are in the home stretch, it is crucial for students of every grade level to start - or finish - looking at colleges. Freshmen, although still young, should focus on maintaining a solid grade-point-average. Sophomores should be preparing to take the SAT or ACT. Juniors need to be primarily concerned with creating a list of schools that they wish to apply to. Seniors, like myself, are now waiting to hear back from different colleges.
Although underclassmen may feel like they have all the time in the world, it is crucial to get an early start. Trust me, that time goes quickly. In addition to keeping up one’s grades, it is also important to set up interviews. For many borderline students, these interviews give them the opportunity to convey their passions more effectively. A student gets to speak directly with an alumnus of the specific institution. An interview is a valuable asset in making your interest known. For instance, just a few weeks ago, I had an interview with Dr. Vitagliano, the proprietor of Smile With Style
Orthodontics in West Islip. As a graduate of Duke University, Dr. Vitagliano is still heavily involved in the happenings both on campus and in the admissions office. During my interview, I made it known that Duke University was one of my first choice institutions. Hopefully, Dr. Vitagliano saw my interest and conveys it to the admissions board. This process can be influential in affording a student access to a specific institution of higher learning, but grades bear much more weight! Make sure to keep your grades up, take standardized tests, apply to college and schedule an interview!

Those changes will very likely be reflected in the report card, which will not only assess a student’s detailed content knowledge, but also his or her demonstrated understanding of higherlevel concepts and more. Pay attention to these marks, as they are a significant measure of students’ performance moving forward with the new standards. Progress toward mastery of grade-level standards is the new norm. While every school district may be different, parents across the nation can expect report cards—particularly in the elementary grades— to measure students’ growth over the course of the school year, not just the term for which they are evaluated. As such, it is important that you understand the different progress indicators and what any numeric codes used actually mean

Thomas James (TJ) Passaro became Boy Scout Troop 125’s (Commack) 93rd Eagle Scout on October 22nd, 2013. An Eagle Court of Honor, celebrating this achievement was held on January 11th, 2014 at the Commack United Methodist Church. For his Eagle Leadership Service Project, TJ constructed stone garden walls around three neglected areas at Little Shelter Rescue Center in Huntington. TJ said, “My Eagle project was one of my most beneficial scouting experiences. It taught me how to effectively plan and budget a project, something I had never done before. He earned a total of 35 merit badges (21 of which are necessary to obtain the rank of Eagle). TJ began scouting in first grade when he joined Cub Scout Pack 329 (Commack) as a Tiger Scout and continued until he earned the Arrow of Light and crossed over to boy scouts. As a member of Troop 125 for 7 years, he has held various leadership positions including patrol leader, assistant patrol leader and scribe. TJ is also an Ordeal Member of the Order of the Arrow, the National Scouting Honor Camping Society. “I have gone on amazing trips through the troop as well. From white water rafting on the Hudson River, to rock climbing at Harriman State Park, to sailing in the Florida Keys at the Florida National High Adventure Sea Base, Boy Scouts has provided me with opportunities I would never have been able to experience without scouts.” A senior at Commack
High School, TJ has had many academic accomplishments including being a Carson Scholarship Recipient, National Merit Commended Scholar, National Honor Society member, member of the Top Cohort and is an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate (a highly regarded world-wide recognized achievement, a program which only a few districts throughout Long Island offer and from that only a very small percentage of students earn this achievement).
TJ is planning on attending college and majoring in computer science with ambitions of working as a computer scientist. He commented, “In a few short months, I will be 18 and age out of Troop 125. I will have the skills, memories and friends I gained through Troop 125 for the rest of my life.” The newest Eagle Scout is the son of Iris and Thomas Passaro and brother to Caitlin, Brianna, and Ryan. The Passaro’s reside in Commack.

While Hauppauge and many other Long Island school districts have held Parent Information Nights, Dr. Murphy and Mr. Licht decided to collaborate and invite other Long Island school districts to join in and to build a library of support videos that would be: • Aligned to the NYS common core math curriculum, and specifically, the modules available at engageny.org • Publically available to all students, parents, etc. • Easily searched on iPads, PCs, phones, etc. • Linked to other

The initial video library was presented at the July 23rd meeting. “We provided an overview of the ccvidhelp initiative, outlining many of the details while providing demonstrations of the various technologies employed to create, edit and host the tutorial videos,” stated Dr. Murphy. “Attendees were very enthusiastic, and some signed up right away to join us in our efforts. Going forward, we will continue to build our video library with the goal of creating math videos that align to the Common Core Math Modules for Grades K-9 over time.”
