The American Heart Association (AHA) wants you to GO RED on Friday, February 5th for National Wear Red Day to help shine a light on the number one killer of men and women - heart disease. Companies, community organizations and residents are invited to get creative to make landmarks, main streets, buildings and homes “Go Red” to kick off February’s American Heart Month. “This is such a simple way to make a difference in our community. Every red heart, red ribbon or red dress in a store window reminds women, and all of us, how important our hearts are. Heart healthy should be our main priority in February and all year long to prevent our number one killer,” said Dr. Scott Schubach, President of the Long Island American Heart Association Board of Directors and Chairman of the Department of Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery

at Winthrop-University Hospital. In addition to landmarks going red, thousands of employees will participate in National Wear Red Day by donating $5 to the Go Red For Women campaign. In turn, they will receive a red dress pin or wristband, and lifesaving heart health education. Some organizations will offer heart healthy lunch and learn programs, organize healthy walks, or offer healthier foods in vending machines or cafeterias. This lack of awareness means that more women than men are dying from heart disease and stroke. Go Red For Women’s goal is to save women’s lives. The good news is that more than 80% of heart disease events in women can be prevented by making simple lifestyle changes like eating healthier, quitting smoking and exercising 30 minutes daily. A pediatrician from Northwell Health will speak at each workshop and also take questions from the audience. The first workshop will focus on issues such as toilet training, bedwetting and other issues of interest related to children’s urological conditions. “Parents can feel overwhelmed when it comes to issues such as toilet training and bedwetting,” says Dr. Lane Palmer, Chief of Pediatric Urology at Cohen Children’s Medical Center. “There are some very simple techniques that can make the process go very smoothly for both the parent and the toddler.” According to Dr. Reena Nandi, Director of Psychiatric Services at North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center, the monthly Positive Parenting Workshop series will provide parents and caregivers with muchneeded information to help raise healthy, happy children. “We are thrilled to be partnering with such a prestigious group as the pediatricians at Northwell Health, who bring with them deep knowledge of the kinds of issues that parents need to know for their children’s wellbeing,” she says. While it was consistently and heavily snowing last Saturday and many were cleaning up in the aftermath of snowstorm Jonas on Sunday, Southside Hospital cared for 13 women before, during and after they brought new lives into the world. To Southside, Saturday was just any other day; it just so happened to be snowing outside. But in

order for patients not to notice any disruption in service or care during a near record snowstorm, it took a great deal of planning from the hospital’s administration and staff. Before the storm began, Northwell Health advised its staff to make the necessary provisions at their homes so that employees who would be working at the hospital

during snowstorm Jonas could do so without worrying about their personal situations. As weather forecasters were making it increasingly clear that this snowstorm would have a big impact on the Bay Shore area, Southside Hospital began planning and executing its emergency management plans which were created for natural disasters and have been utilized during occurrences such as Hurricane Sandy. Southside’s staff stocked up on extra supplies and food to make sure all would be properly cared for during the snowstorm. The hospital’s leadership began making provisions early in the week to ensure the necessary staff would be at the hospital to care for patients. This included creating an area for staff

to sleep if they needed to stay over to make it to their scheduled shift or if they were unable to safely travel home on Saturday. Southside employees who slept at the hospital were given a free breakfast. The employee cafeteria remained open all day Saturday and into Sunday to make sure people were well nourished. Southside, along with all of the hospitals in Northwell Health, regularly updated emergency first responders and other hospitals about their status throughout the snowstorm through an electronic emergency management system. Southside also kept in contact with neighboring hospitals, including Good Samaritan Hospital, to remain a resource in case they needed assistance.

Narconon Certiﬁcation

Vrooommm! The sound of the car engine was all I could hear. I just got back from the eye doctor. Not good. I knew that someday I would get them, but now? I was only 3 years-old. I looked at my mom and brother. They were talking, but I could not hear them. My brother might have been thinking, “Now I have this loser brother with glasses.” I bet he would have said something but my mom would not let him. She simply wouldn’t. Then my mom took her phone out of her pocket and gave it to my brother. I saw him scroll down until the contact for my dad came up. I was starting to hear now, but faintly. My brother hit the “speaker” button on her phone. “Guess who is going to look even more handsome?” My dad guessed me on the first try. About five more minutes passed, and we were rolling down a “one-

way” parking lot entrance. I saw these menacing looking penguins out of the few inches of window space I had because I was so short. They were staring me down, those ugly penguins. I thought how silly I was to think those penguins are menacing. I thought how my eyes might be acting up or maybe the tinted window might be doing it. I looked up from the seemingly menacing penguins up to the name of the shop. It was called the Eyeglass House. Then we found a spot in the deserted parking lot. When I walked into the store, it was a room where I half expected there to be gas coming out of the wall like a torture chamber. It was a 6’x6’ room with a hat rack and a 2’x4’ bench. There was another door in front of me. I walked through the door, touching a dry, old, rusty doorknob. I looked to the left and saw two desks and at least 100 pairs

of glasses. I saw a bunch of chairs with a life-sized Mickey Mouse. I took a seat… “Slay-terry?” an old woman croaked. My mom, Aidan and I stood up and walked over. The old woman had bright purple glasses and nasty, old, ugly, horribly crooked teeth that reminded me of a beaver’s. She picked out three pairs and I disliked all of them. We tried on a green pair that I looked stupid in, a red pair that I liked the best, and heavy, vomit-worthy blue ones that had holes in the rims that kept the glasses on my face. The holes must have been there to catch a new fashion trend, but the only thing it was catching was strands of my hair. “I like these!” the nasty lady and Mom said. Moments after, we walked out with me wearing the blue glasses. I guess all stories don’t have happy endings.

Apologies, once again, to anyone with birthdays, anniversaries and other notable milestones during this first month of the new year, the symbolic representation of all things new and fresh. With the possible exception of the few moments of New Year’s Eve celebrations which spilled over into the next morning, I have to

say that, for me, 2016 is severely lacking in positive spin. Sure, winter has spared us its wrath for the most part…save for one tiny twofoot helping of the white stuff. Still, the bitter cold and gray, overcast skies leave something to be desired. There is only so much hibernating and vegetating one can realistically do. (Netflix, anyone?) But here we are, turning the page – on the calendar and hopefully on life – as month two begins, providing us with yet another blank canvas to fill. Here’s to getting back to doing those things which make us happy, to not allowing the negativity of other individuals and situations dictate our moods, to rising above the monotony in search of fulfillment.

Here’s to hoping that February provides the perfect precursor to spring, and all the beauty and wonderment it brings. Plus, we have an extra day to take advantage of this year, a bonus opportunity if ever there was one. Now all we have to do is make use of it, and of all those clichéd philosophies we want so badly to believe in. Whatever it is you are hoping for, may you have the courage to go after it. Good things come to those who wait; but a pointed step in the right direction surely doesn’t hurt. Here’s to February, to frosted windowpanes and picturesque winter sunsets and the beginnings of revitalization. Oh, and of course Buddy the Betta’s 1st birthday. Priorities humans, priorities.

and healthy competition. Over the years, FIRST students from Long Island received more than $8 million in scholarships for higher education, in areas of science, technology, engineering, business or math in college. These students also develop maturity, professionalism and teamwork skills that enrich their lives. Our graduates often pursue careers with sponsoring companies, meeting the businesses’ needs for well-rounded, technically skilled employees.” FIRST isn’t limited to Long Island; more than 3,100 teams from all over the world came together as a community to share in the excitement of seeing the new game unveiled and will draw on this enthusiasm during the six-week build period that is available. The Stony Brook University Jacob Javits Lecture Center was abuzz with anticipation on Saturday, January 9th, as students, educators and families from across Long Island joined together for the unveiling of the 2016 FIRST® (For the Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC) “Stronghold” theme. Based on popular medieval castle-conquering and battlestrategy games, “Stronghold” involves two Alliances of three robots each on a quest to breach opponents’ defenses, calculate their movements and ultimately overtake their tower. Presented by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island (SBPLI), this annual event served as the official KickOff of the 2016 FIRST Long Island season and included a live broadcast of the game reveal direct to the Javits Center. Hundreds of eager Long Island FIRST students and their parents and coaches listened with rapt attention as FIRST Founder Dean Kamen, FIRST Executive Advisory Board Co-Chair Woodie Flowers and FIRST President Donald Bossi discussed the program as well as the 2016 theme and objective. “One of the amazing things about FIRST is that everyone involved gets more out of it than they put into it,” said Dean Kamen, president of DEKA Research & Development and FIRST Founder. “The kids get opportunities they’d never get elsewhere; it might give them career options they’d never thought about. Exploring Energy As part of their unit on sound energy, students in Erica O’Connor’s secondgrade class at Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District created musical instruments using items around their house and recycled materials.

Students brought to school materials for their instrument and assembled them in class. Some of the instruments the secondgraders made included drums, maracas and guitars. Once they finished their instrument, students completed a “how to”

worksheet to explain the steps they took to create their instrument. The following day, students united as a class to form the “O’Connor Rock Band.” Together, they sang, “This Land is Your Land,” by Woody Guthrie while playing their instruments.

During the PTA’s “Once Upon a Book” performance, students watched their parents and teachers play the part of classic storybook characters including Cinderella, Snow White and her dwarfs, Goldilocks, Prince Charming and Sleeping Beauty. Infused with some popular riddles and song melodies, the story followed each character as

he or she shared with the audience the importance of reading and some of their favorite books to read. In the end, Principal Maureen Kelly, playing the role of Little Red Riding Hood, stopped the Big Bad Wolf, played by Assistant Principal Tara Falasco, from stealing all the characters’ books and all the characters were happy to once again have their books to read.

Discussing Citizenship As part of the third-grade social studies curriculum, students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District are learning about the rights and responsibilities of being a citizen in the United States. To help further explain the concept of citizenship, Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern visited students and led a group discussion on the topic.

Prior to the presentation, third-graders discussed what it means to be a citizen, learned about the three branches of government and people of authority in the government that help create laws. During the session, Legislator Stern explained the types of responsibilities citizens have, the importance of voting and ways to be a good citizen at a young age such as recycling and being

respectful to their family members. He also shared the duties and obligations he has a legislator. To conclude, students participated in a question and answer session with Legislator Stern. He encouraged the thirdgraders to share any ideas or concerns they may have with him and passed out an information sheet with his phone number and email address.

Parents Learn to Play To help strengthen the home-to-school connection, parents of students in the orchestra program at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District participated in a hands-on lesson that demonstrated the fundamentals of playing a string instrument during the music program’s inaugural Parent

Orchestra Night. During two evening sessions in January, parents tried their hand at playing the violin. Led by teachers Karen Gellert and Diana Gotzen-Berg, parents were instructed on how to properly hold a violin and learned about the different parts and strings of the instrument. They were taught how to play four different strings

and learned to play four musical pieces. The following week, parents performed in a mini concert for their children. “Now these parents have a better understanding of some of the basic techniques employed by their children in playing their instruments, and ultimately can help them with their practicing,” said Gellert.

ABC News Nightline co-anchor Byron Pitts will deliver the keynote address at the Town of Huntington’s 29th Annual Black History Month Celebration, scheduled for Thursday, February 4th, at Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School in Huntington Station, beginning at 7 p.m. Mr. Pitts is an awardwinning journalist – including multiple Emmys and the National Association of Black Journalist’s Journalist of the Year citation for 2002 – who has traveled around the world to cover some of the biggest news stories of our time, including reporting from Ground

Zero after the 9/11 attacks (which resulted in one of his Emmys), the Florida presidential recount, the tsunami in Indonesia, the refugee crisis in Kosovo and the Boston Marathon bombing. Mr. Pitts joined ABC News in 2013 after 15 years at CBS News, where he was chief national correspondent for the CBS Evening News and a frequent contributor to 60 Minutes. At ABC, he has been anchor and chief national correspondent, covering national news stories and in-depth features. He was named Nightline co-anchor in 2014. As impressive

as his professional accomplishments are, Mr. Pitts also has a powerful story to tell about overcoming two serious obstacles to achieving his longtime dream of becoming a journalist. He was functionally illiterate until the age of 12 and struggled to overcome a stutter. Mr. Pitts chronicled his journey in a 2009 memoir entitled, “Step Out on Nothing: How Faith and Family Helped Me Conquer Life’s Challenges.” A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Mr. Pitts graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University, where he studied journalism and speech communication.

Database Launches Each year on February 11th (2/11), United Way launches a statewide initiative 2-1-1 to educate communities about the valuable free, online directory of health and human services’ agencies and programs available in Nassau and Suffolk counties. The Long Island Database is updated and managed daily and provides website visitors with detailed information on more than 10,000 community resources for help and assistance in a range of areas. In addition to the full

database, there are also special searches for specific populations including veteran’s services, services for those who are developmentally disabled and their caregivers and informational updates during weather emergencies. This information, as well as a community calendar of events, can be viewed through multimedia platforms including Facebook and Twitter. United Way of Long Island coordinates the LI region and call center and the Middle Country Pub-

For the fifth consecutive year, the Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School physical education department in the Harborfields Central School District hosted its Fifth-Grade Charity Volleyball Tournament with all proceeds this year benefiting a family in the district who has a child battling cancer. To register for the tournament, each of the 190 fifth-grade students paid a nominal fee of $5 that allowed them to participate in several volleyball matches with their fellow classmates.

To help supplement the funds collected, the Tunney family, a family in the district, generously matched each child’s registration fee. Through gracious contributions from the TJL physical education department, faculty and community members, a raffle was held, which allowed the entire school to contribute to this special cause. Some of the prizes included sport equipment packages, gift cards for Dunkin Donuts, GameStop, Besito Mexican Restaurant and Old Fields

Restaurant, and students entered for a chance to win a pizza and bagel party for their class. Through the collaborative efforts of the school community and the Tunney family donation as well as raffle tickets and concession stand sales, TJL School raised nearly $6,000 to help the Wrede family defray medical costs for their child. At the end of January, Mrs. Kerri Wrede met some of the students who participated in the tournament and thanked them personally for all their efforts.
