FCA has served Long Islanders since 1884 and today its more than 40 programs fall into five big areas of need: Addiction Prevention, Treatment & Recovery Taking on addiction from every angle, beginning with prevention. Recovery support services are offered Islandwide with offices from Hempstead to Westhampton Beach. Children’s Mental Health & Wellness This division offers an array of services and supports designed to promote the health and wellness of children and their families. The services are for individuals up to 21 years of age who have or are at risk of developing a mental health diagnosis. Services are always free to clients, voluntary, family-driven, strength-based, and culturally competent, with location and scheduling tailored to each family’s needs. They also provide support for the families of individuals with mental and/ or behavioral health issues. Prevention & Family Support FCA’s prevention team provides critical services to at-risk children and families including a nursery co-op program,

alcohol and substance abuse and gun violence r e d u c t i o n program, and more, through collaboration, education, and advocacy. Residential Care FCA operates four residences that focus on quality care, seamless transitions and well-managed aftercare services for youth. Nassau Haven and Walkabout provide emergency shelter and longer term transitional housing for homeless, runaway and trafficked youth. Two other residences support children and young adults with serious emotional disturbances or mental health issues. Senior & Adult Services FCA believes that every senior deserves to live with dignity, safety and independence. FCA helps more than 10,000 seniors a year with meal deliveries, caregiver support, home visits for companionship, elder abuse prevention and advocacy. The number of people who turn to FCA for help is growing and with it, the need for donations to close gaps in government funding. FCA’s programs and services are greatly enhanced by the involvement of others, whether through donations of time or money, and welcome the help of all Long Islanders to further its mission. Wedding planning involves many movable pieces that ultimately need to come together on the big day. Planning is typically a months-long process, and adhering to certain monthly benchmarks can help couples stay the course. Brides magazine offers that the perfect engagement period is 12 to 14 months, which affords ample time to get organized and work with vendors. With that in mind, here’s a 12-month timeline for couples getting ready to say “I do.”

instead. Upset about the misdirected adoration toward this mortal, Venus asks Cupid to have the girl, Psyche, fall in love with a monster. Cupid agrees, but once he sees Psyche he “accidentally” hits himself with one of his own golden arrows and falls in love with Psyche. The resulting match does not prove easy, and through a series of unfortunate events, Psyche must prove her love to Cupid and accomplish various tasks to win back his heart. Eventually, Psyche does and achieves goddess status. Cupid has been portrayed both as a young man and child through Renaissance art and beyond. When Valentine’s Day became popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, Cupid was linked to Valentine’s

Day celebrations due to his matchmaking abilities. His popularity only continued in the early 20th century,

when Hallmark began to manufacture Valentine’s Day cards featuring Cupid. Cupid helped push

people together in ancient mythology, and he can even be the catalyst for modern day matchmaking as well.

Urban Air Lake Grove Adventure Park Introduces New “Jumperoo” Program For Toddlers Urban Air Lake Grove, the only indoor adventure park of its kind on Long Island, launched a new “Jumperoo” program for kids ages 2 to 5 on Monday, January 31, 2022. “Jumperoo” will be open to children ages 2 to 5 every Monday from 10am to 12pm, with access to age-appropriate attractions including the Climbing Hill, Wipeout, Battle Beam, Warrior Course, giant LEGO building block area, trampolines and more. “Jumperoo” sessions are for toddlers only and excludes holidays. Greeting cards are popular ways to express love and affection on Valentine’s Day. However, those looking to say “I love you” and much more in a creative way may want to harken back to a tradition that is several centuries old. Purse puzzles were once an innovative way to send notes and illustrations and express other sentiments. Purse puzzles became popular

around 1720 and remained so until roughly 1840. The puzzles consisted of a sheet of paper folded into smaller parts. When unfolded, the purse puzzle would reveal several messages and handdrawn art. In the 19th century, purse puzzles were a clever way for lovers to send love notes on Valentine’s Day or other times of the year. Purse

puzzles were a form of paper art, similar to origami. Valentine’s celebrants can rekindle the magic of purse puzzles to add creative flair to this year’s celebrations. They can be made easily with tutorials found on websites such as YouTube. The finished puzzle will take a square shape and open up like a pinwheel until the full sheet of paper is revealed.

Acting Commissioner Patrick Beckley of the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services (FRES) has appointed Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) as Deputy Fire Coordinator (DFC) – All Hazards. “Suffolk County FRES’ Deputy Fire Coordinator Program is vital to ensuring the continuity of emergency operations during a multiagency response and is important in terms of communication among first responder agencies in Suffolk County,” said Acting Commissioner Beckley. “On behalf of FRES, we thank Legislator Donnelly for his advocacy and commitment to the local fire and EMS service. We look forward to having him further serve the County as a Deputy Fire Coordinator.” Legislator Donnelly, an almost-four-decade Deer Park Fire Department volunteer, retired as a 27-year member of the Fire Department of New York City (FDNY) immediately after election to his first term in the Legislature in 2017. Despite not being an official sport, students were able to have unofficial scrimmages against local teams. All of the returning players saw increases in their overall scores, with senior Jonathan Lembo scoring their first “turkey,” or three strikes in a row. “The growth we have seen in this program in such a short time has been

amazing,” said Transition Coordinator Cassie Reilly. “The students’ excitement to be there, participate and work together as a team in a sport that can be more focused on the individual is exceptional. The feedback we have gotten from all the families has been extremely positive. Starting anything new in these past two years has presented new challenges and our athletes and their families have been partners with the district in understanding the need for change and being flexible with us as we are figuring out this new program.”

Scouts And Their Families Take A Winter Hike

The Boy Scouts of America’s Cub Scout and Scout BSA program is a four-season fun experience for youths of all ages, and spending time outdoors in the winter was no exception for the scouts and their family members of the Matinecock District on Sunday, January 23, 2022 when they participated in a Winter Wonder Hike at Sunken Meadow State Park. Coordinated by Cubmaster Carey Ng of Pack312 (Northport) and Den Leader Alon Goldberg of Pack 328 (Smithtown) helped put on this fun event to get our scouts and

local community youth out of the house and experience nature. Boy Scout Troop 106 (Dix Hills) with the leadership of Scout Master Steve Kolwalski helped teach the Cub Scouts about orienteering, using maps, and using compasses to locate landmarks on the Sunken Meadow Hiking Trails. The event had 200 adult scouting volunteers and local families participate. Cub Scout Packs from Huntington, Commack, Hauppauge, Dix Hills, Northport, and Kings Park came out and joined in the fun. At the end of the Matinecock District

(Scouts BSA)’s hike, the scouts and their family members were served hot chocolate (they were prepared and had brought along their own cups to keep the environment clean) and were able to make s’mores to eat. The Long Island Landscape-From Awe To Action Fine Art Exhibition At Mills Pond Gallery Through Feb. 26, 2022 Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to present The Long Island Landscape-from Awe to Action through February 26 at Mills Pond Gallery. For information or directions visit millspondgallery.org or call 631-862-6575. Mills Pond Gallery hours: Wednesdays - Fridays 10 am – 4 pm and Saturdays and Sundays 12 pm – 4 pm. Admission to the Gallery is free. The gallery is located at 660 NY-25A, St. James, NY. All parking in rear lot off Mills Pond Rd. (directly across from 199 Mills Pond Rd.) All gallery visitors asked to wear a mask, present their vaccination cards upon entry and practice social distancing. As we continue to monitor the situation, we will provide updates on our website if future changes in the virus impact us. This exhibit invites viewers to a visual journey across Long Island’s unique landscape, hoping the art exhibited helps audiences build an emotional connection to their natural world on Long Island, inspiring them to care for and look after their environment. We are hoping that this exhibit will encourage some conversation

around climate change and steer people toward understanding that everyone can do something to help. The exhibit includes 60 works from 51 artists hailing from 33 Long Island communities. Northport High School Varsity Wrestling Wins Section XI league II Championship Northport High School’s varsity wrestling team took home the win over Commack High School on Jan. 12 to secure the Section XI league II championship. Led by coach Robert “Thad” Aliberti, the team won 43-16. The team went undefeated in League II and has an overall 15-4 record thus far. This is the schools fifth league II title in school history.

Moving forward, the team will go on to compete in Section XI playoffs next week and the individual league, county and state tournaments next month. Coach Aliberti called the win a “complete team effort” and shared how excited students were to have achieved this win. He also thanked the parents and team booster club for their support.
