The Distinguished Young Women of New York Scholarship Program is now accepting applications for its college scholarship program, open to current high school junior women in the state of New York who are graduating by June 2018. The state program will be held at Cohoes High School on Saturday, July 29th, 2017. Founded in 1958 in Mobile, Alabama, Distinguished Young Women, formerly known as America’s Junior Miss, is the largest and oldest nation-wide scholarship program for high school girls. It has provided lifechanging experiences for more than 700,000 young women across the country and more than $106 million in cash scholarships at the local, state and national levels and $1.1 billion in college granted scholarships. In addition to providing scholarships, Distinguished Young Women offers Life Skill Workshops and online resources, Community Service and challenges each participant to share its national outreach program, Be Your Best Self. Participants can learn skills like interviewing, public speaking, selfconfidence building, financial planning, team building and much more. These skills not only prepare everyone for our program but also for the world after high school and college This is an academic program designed for high school girls who have achieved excellence in academic achievement, physical fitness, on-stage performance skills, and the ability to think and communicate clearly. The winner will be awarded the title of Distinguished Young Woman of New York and will go on to compete for The Distinguished Young Woman of America in Mobile, Ala., in June 2018 for additional college scholarship money. Shining Musicians 15 students selected to join the Ensemble. They will rehearse with the All-County Percussion Ensemble in the upcoming weeks leading up to a concert on February 10th at Mount Sinai High School. “Their percussion skills have skyrocketed over the past three years and I am so very proud to be a part of their music education,” said band director Vickie Henson. “These are incredible young men who in addition to their musical contributions to our
department, make service to others a priority in their daily lives. They are shining examples of the Elwood Community.” In addition, Jason and Sean are currently preparing NYSSMA solos and are members of the John Glenn Symphonic Band, Honors Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and Marching Band. Jason is also a member of Concert Choir and Acapelwood, the high school’s acapella group.

Seniors Matthew Lindley and Rose Ozimkowski from the Northport High School were recently presented with the Outstanding Physical Education Student Award from the New York State Association Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYSAHPERD) Suffolk Zone Chapter. Both received a certificate and medal for their academic excellence, outstanding character and
leadership qualities in a physical education setting and overall leadership in school-wide activities. To be nominated for this honor, both students also had to be outstanding role models within the community and to their peers. Lindley was nominated by his teacher John DeMartini while Ozimkowski was nominated by her teacher Kaylie LaLota. “On behalf of myself and

Reich stressed antibullying while speaking about the history of the Holocaust and his own personal experience of living through it. Special Opportunity to motivate, educate and inspire others. The team consists of players from all across the country that have overcome lower limb amputations caused by various circumstances. The team played a basketball game with students from each grade level. These included a game against the school’s sixth-graders and seventhand eighth-grade boys’ basketball teams. Students cheered the teams on as they ran up and down
the court in the school gymnasium. AMP1 made it a priority to hype the crowd up throughout the games. AMP1 player and Long Island native, Robert Anthony Rodriguez gave the crowd high-fives and got students excited about each game. “It feels amazing to be able to come out and inspire others,” he said. “The kids are loving it and we are really enjoying getting them hyped up.”
Reich described to students the life and death obstacles that he had to endure as a teenager during the time. Reich survived four concentration camps and was separated from his family and friends. He spoke about the brutal treatment of those who were labeled as different and gave students the statistics of those that were murdered for their religion, background, actions or group. At the conclusion of the presentation, Reich reflected on what power still does today in the world and showed images of young adults who ended their lives due to bullying. “Don’t be one of the good people who does nothing,” said Reich. “Help someone without being asked and ask yourself what is the right thing to do.” Photo courtesy of: Northport-East Northport School District
A Cultural Experience
In an effort to expand on the sixth-grade curriculum and celebrate the upcoming Chinese New Year, Northport Middle School sixth-graders received a special presentation from the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company on January 17th. Titled “The Art of Chinese Dance,” students learned about Chinese culture and had the unique opportunity to take part in the program itself. The Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company educated students on the Chinese
zodiac, Chinese language and history. They also showcased a variety of Chinese dances. The dancers performed the Ribbon Dance, the Long Spirit Dance, the Fan Dance and the Peacock Dance for students to get a better understanding of the culture. In addition, dancers discussed what they each do to perfect their dances and showed students how they practice walking, running, stretching and kicking.
Students were introduced to hand gestures and practiced two popular ones called the orchid hand and the tiger hand. “You can use your hands to tell a story through dance,” said choreographer and dancer Nai-Ni Chen. To conclude the presentation, 15 students were chosen to take part in a performance of the Ribbon Dance with the help of the Nai-Ni Chen dancers.

Fighting Hunger Norwood Avenue Elementary School students and their families participated in the school’s Annual Winter Food Drive from January 9th through 13th. Sponsored by the Norwood Avenue PTA, the school community donated 130 pounds of food to the Ecumenical
Food Pantry at the First Presbyterian Church in Northport. Led by Norwood PTA Food Drive Chairperson Annette Garcia, students were invited to take part in the drive by donating nonperishable food items to those in need throughout the week and
place them on a table in the school’s main hallway. The PTA has held the Annual Winter Food Drive for more than 10 years in an effort to empower students to lend a hand to those less fortunate. A similar food drive will take place in the spring.

Bellerose Avenue Elementary School students celebrated their PARP (Parents as Reading Partners) program on January 20th with two special gradelevel assemblies with PetraPuppets. Hosted by ventriloquist Steve Petra, students were presented with an interactive show titled “Reading Rampage,” which focused on the importance of reading and featured quirky puppet characters.
Students participated by answering questions and taking part in reading games on stage. Petra introduced characters such as The Brain, Pierre Lobsterre, Demento and Gus The Word Bird to add humor and interact with students. Through activities and songs, students learned about figures of speech, rhyming, punctuation and acronyms. The school’s PARP program will run from January 17th to February
10th in an effort to encourage students to read with a partner and “make their mark.” The school’s hallway features a board where classes can make a checkmark based on how much they have read throughout the course of the weeks. “This is not a competition,” said Principal Lori Beekman. “We want students to read as much as they can and have fun doing it.”
Making Their Mark During the NorthportEast Northport School District’s Board of Education meeting on January 12th, District Chairperson of Social Studies Education Sean Hurley presented senior Thomas Dowling, Jr. as Social Studies Department Student of the Month and also recognized the American Legion Boys State and Empire Girls State Program participants. Hurley invited Dowling to speak about his impressive academic career. “TJ challenged himself and triumphed in the most demanding courses
that we offer,” Hurley said. “We are confident that whatever path TJ takes, he will continue to apply his knowledge, experience and passion to not only the Northport community but also to the world around him to strive to make it a better place for us all.” In addition, TJ was elected vice president of Student Government for the past two years and represented the high school by competing with students from across Long Island as a member of the school’s Model United Nations Team. Hurley also invited two chairmen from the Northport American

They remembered the late Jim Mahoney, a former chairman of the program and an active member of the Northport community. As we begin this second month of 2017, let us take stock of the year so far… Mother Nature has been relatively kind, sparing us the worst of winter’s wrath and limiting the hazardous weather to one shovel-worthy pileup of the white stuff. Of course, history has shown February to be among the snowiest here on Long Island, so be forewarned. No matter what that little furry critter says tomorrow, we still have several weeks to go before we can start looking for crocuses. Me, I just purchased three new books and am actually looking forward to some cozy, inclement weather to settle in and start reading. The beginning of the year may not be great for outdoor activities - although, it should be noted,
some of the most exquisite sunrises and sunsets tend to grace our skies during these month - but there are plenty of indoor hobbies to embrace, from movies to bowling to planetarium shows and more. Speaking of pastimes, I was pleasantly surprised to receive quite a bit of feedback to last week’s column on the closing of my yoga studio, with many offering their recommendations for alternative locations and similarly touting the benefits of this spiritual practice. Thank you to all who wrote in – it is certainly nice to know that there is an entire community of fellow “yogis” out there, and that many of you read my column weekly! In line with that feedback, it also occurred to me that I never did share the arrival of a new little finned friend,
“Spud,” who I adopted back at the end of November. While no pet will ever come close to replacing my Buddy and our very special relationship, Spud is certainly an entertaining little fellow with a personality all his own. Just a mere baby betta when I took him in, he is slowly growing into a beautiful boy with spikey blue fins and a penchant for darting to and fro and “playing” with his reflection. Spud’s swimming skills can use a little work, and I’m still crushing his food pellets into tiny, more manageable crumbs for his delicate system; but, overall, he seems to be adjusting to his new home quite nicely. And with that, we head into February, hoping that each passing month brings with it a little more sunshine into our lives.
