Huntington Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci delivered the keynote address at Farmingdale State College’s 15th annual Winter Commencement January 23rd, telling graduates to “think about what you have learned and what you have yet to learn” as they set goals and try to achieve them. “Think about what you

have learned, and what you have yet to learn. Think about the journey you have taken to get where you are today. Think about all the success you have had, as well as the disappointments. Those past experiences, both positive and negative, are part of who you are today,” Supervisor Lupinacci said, speaking before an

audience of 450 graduates, their families, friends, faculty and college staff. “Think about what you want to be, and what you have to do to get there. And think about how to react when things don’t go necessarily as planned, and how to make the most of the adversity we all must face at some point in our lives.” In his remarks, Supervisor Lupinacci described the path that took him to his current post, leading a town of 210,00 residents: his decision to major in government in college and to pursue law and business graduate degrees; internships that reinforced his career choice; election to the South Huntington school board and the state Assembly before deciding to run for Huntington supervisor last year after the longtime incumbent,

LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” . . . this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry that reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. They operate a very impressive Food Outreach weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www. LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile manner because the Gospel

tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. The Pilot Club is an organization that assists various support programs here on Long Island. They have donated medical equipment to those in need, given needy children backpacks filled with school supplies, spent time with special needs adults and more! They have been helping others for more than 30 years and continue to help those in need around Long Island to this day. They are currently in need of volunteer puppy raisers! Puppy raising is when an individual fosters a guide or service dog puppy in their home for the first year of its life. Although children can be involved in this process, they ask that all applicants are over 18 years of age. All puppy raisers are required to attend monthly puppy raising classes. To be approved for this program, you must undergo a home visit by a staff member or an approved volunteer. Peacocks & Pretty Things Beauty. They say it is in the eye of the beholder; but truly, it exists all around us, if we take the time to notice. My love of photography has certainly enhanced my ability to appreciate the aesthetics of my surroundings, from interesting cloud formations while waiting for sunsets, to pretty roadside blossoms that would otherwise be characterized as weeds to the undiscerning eye, to the novelty of light and shadow as it plays out upon a surface. Such is the abstract nature of visual “art.” And then there are the moments when it appears before you in its most natural, stunningly striking form. Case in point: several weeks ago, my friend and I enjoyed a late lunch at the famed Milleridge Inn, having both decided that it was the perfect locale after having not dined there in quite some time. To our surprise, the holiday lights were still on full display, with remnants of the Christmas season in every corner of the restaurant and shops. Having just finished dismantling my own decorations the previous week, I was at once

nostalgic and slightly weary of them. As we exited the bakery and made our way to the official Christmas shop located on the property, I spotted what appeared to be a large bird sitting on the railing of the ice cream parlor. “Is that real?” I whispered to my friend, “Or just a decoration?” We stared intently, only to be instantly startled. “It moved! Oh my gosh, it moved!” As we tentatively approached, we realized it was a GIANT peacock. And with that, no less than half a dozen others peered out from behind various corners and crevices, along with several chickens and peahens. Unfazed by the humans before them, they moseyed to and fro, pausing briefly to study us. Thoroughly infatuated, we wandered after them, attempting to snap pictures and even a few short videos of these majestic feathered creatures. As I knelt down and tentatively reached my hand out toward one especially beautiful specimen, my friend grabbed my phone to

capture the sight. The bird cocked his head slightly, examining me carefully, then strode purposefully toward me. Unsure if he was planning to sit on my lap or - more likely - to take a sizable bite out of me, I froze, backing away slightly. “Did you get the picture?” I nervously called to my friend. “Yes, I think I took about 27 of them,” she replied giggling. Alright then, no sense pushing my luck. I quickly stood up as the peacock stared at me, seemingly perplexed. “Sorry pretty bird, thanks for the photo op.” And with that, he fluttered his massive wings and took off, soaring to a nearby tree branch. By that point, a small crowd had gathered around us, amazed that this one bird had taken such an apparent liking to me. A little boy exclaimed to his parents, “Wow, they fly???” Peering up at the bird, now perched overhead, my friend and I looked at each other in utter amazement. “That,” I said, “was clearly the highlight of the day.” Beauty. It’s everywhere.

Frank Petrone, announced his retirement. “I felt that all of my experiences...my education....my time as a government intern and staffer...my school board service...and my tenure on the state legislature...had prepared me for the job. I was excited about the prospect of giving back to a community that has given me so much,” the Supervisor said. He added, “I have been in office for three weeks now. Each day, I learn more about how this complex and diverse Town of 210,000 people functions. And I hope and believe I will continue to learn as long as I hold this job. The Town will only grow if I continue to grow. And I will grow by listening and learning.” He concluded: “As you leave this ceremony, diploma in hand, think about how much you have accomplished and smile. You are all off to an excellent start. Continue working hard, and you should get to where you want to be. But as you head down your chosen life path, I hope you enjoy the journey as much as the end result.”

The Marty Lyon’s Foundation – Long Island Chapter will host its 5th annual Marty Gras Dinner Dance on Saturday, February 17th from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Captain Bill’s Restaurant; 122 Ocean Ave. in Bay Shore. Students in Northport High School’s Iron Chef class held a cooking competition that focused on the upcoming Super Bowl on January 17th, during which they created a unique Super Bowl appetizer. Principal Dan Danbusky, Assistant Principals Shannon Dantuono and Terrence Hinson and Athletic Director Mark Dantuono served as competition judges. They asked each kitchen team questions and scored the dishes by taste, verbal and

visual presentation, and level of difficulty. Students put their best effort into the dishes, and some did outside research to explain the appeal of their dishes. “Using an odd number of dishes is more visually pleasing than an even number,” said Emily DeMaio, a member of kitchen three, as they presented their deep friend buffalo chicken mozzarella sticks. “That’s why we distributed our dipping sauce in three bowls instead of four.”

In addition, students were also graded on elements such as time management, kitchen clean up and planning. Each kitchen was proud of their dish, but all were aware that there could only be one team to win the Iron Chef medal. The ultimate winner of the challenge was the team from kitchen three: students Liana Brady, Emily DeMaio, Jennifer Vladimir, Kailyn Kilroe and Madeline Guarineri.

Members of the Melville Fire Department recently participated in a handson training class for “Pet CPR and First Aid for First Responders.” Following a recent mutual aid response for a house fire involving the rescue of a large number of various species of animals, the department

wanted to further its’ knowledge in how to provide effective treatment of injured pets. Taught by a 25+ year veteran ALS (Advanced Life Support) provider and educator from Paws N Claws 911, Melville fire rescue volunteers were instructed in emergency

A group of eigth-graders from East Northport Middle School arrived to school over an hour early on January 12th in order to video chat with students that were already at school, across the world, in India. This opportunity, organized by teachers Andrew Luberto and Diana Aiello, was made possible by Generation Global. This UK-based organization is part of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, and is committed to fostering positive cultural discussions using student dialogue by opening up a passageway for live video calls between student groups all over the

world. East Northport Middle School students spoke with students from Delhi Public School in India and discussed their own individual traditions and values, what every-day life looks like and celebrations that are special to the Northport-East Northport community, like Cow Harbor Day. Indian students discussed their love for different languages, pop culture and athletic passions that are specific to their country such as kho kho, which is a popular tag-like sport they play. Students from Delhi Public School also talked

about academics, and East Northport students were intrigued to discover that most spoke two languages fluently, and were in the process of learning a third. Both groups also explored different religious rituals and celebrations - discussing Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Hinduism and how these religions impact a student’s identity. All students enjoyed the conversation so much that another video conference is sure to follow - further bulding bonds of mutual respect within the global community.

Held at the Fran Greenspan Administration Building in Dix Hills on Monday, January 8th, the students were recognized by a myriad of educators, dignitaries and community leaders and received County Proclamations from Legislators Donnelly and Berland. were Michael Lake, their HHH advisor and Dr. Ken-Ichi Takemaru, who oversaw their research at Stony Brook University. “Winning the Siemens competition is the high school equivalent of receiving a Nobel or Pulitzer Prize and puts these outstanding young scientists in an infinitesimally elite group of dedicated, driven and intellectually gifted students,” said Legislator Donnelly. “Wherever their futures take them – and I have no doubt that it will be very far – they will forever be distinguished as National Siemens winners. It was an evening of exploration and investigation as Elwood School District students in grades K-8 attended the annual STEAM Night, held at Elwood Middle School on January 18th. This year’s theme, Around the World and Through Time, encouraged participants to use their science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics skills to engage in activities that tied in with international culture and diversity. STEAM is an instructional approach that employs science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics to guide students in dialogue, critical-thinking, problem solving, collaboration and inquiry.

T e c h n o l o g y Instructional Specialist Krista Albrecht explained that the goal of the evening was to expose students to various types of science and technology activities, while emphasizing the importance of being kind to the Earth through recycling. “We also wanted to host activities with origins that expand the globe, emphasizing diversity and culture,” Albrecht said. Teacher Pam Fine, who collaborated with Albrecht and Director of Math, Science and Technology Eileen KellyGorman in hosting the program, noted that high school student council helpers volunteered their time to run games in the

game room section that connected to their own cultures. Students received a passport to write down facts about each of the countries’ games played. Other activities included African basket weaving, the crafting of instruments, various architectural activities, the study of well water and more. “STEAM night was a great success, thanks to our teachers and high school students who volunteered their time to run sessions, the community organizations who helped sponsor the event, and the families who participated,” KellyJackson Dunham, a Gorman said. “We love to see parents and students fourth-grader from Thomas Lahey Elementary learning together and J. School in the Harborfields trying new things.” Central School District, recently received a perfect score during the first of three meets in this year’s WordMasters Challenge. This challenge is a national vocabulary competition that nearly 150,000 students participate in

annually. Jackson was one of 86 students to earn a perfect score nationwide. The WordMasters Challenge helps students exercise critical thinking and encourages them to become familiar with sets of interesting new words. Enrichment Academic Program at Thomas J. Lahey participate in the WordMasters Challenge every year. Students, coached by teacher Christine Mayr, were given 25 vocabulary terms to define, study and make connections among. In class, students used online resources to define the given words, determine synonyms and antonyms, and examined the words and their relationship to each other. For the second meet, students will have a new set of 25 words in addition to the words from the previous meet. Live Broadcasts to Begin Huntington residents unable to make it to Town Hall for board meetings will soon be able to view the meetings in real time, as the result of a resolution approved by the Town Board at its January 23rd meeting. Sponsored by Councilwoman Joan Cergol and co-sponsored by Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci, the resolution calls for live broadcasts of Town Board, Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals meetings on the Town’s government access television channels and live streaming of the meetings on the Town’s website. This will allow anyone with Internet connection

to watch the meetings in real time on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smart phones, as well as on Optimum Channel 18 or FiOS Channel 38. “These live broadcasts, which community members have asked for, will enhance our transparency with the public,” Councilwoman Cergol said. “It is simply good government, at no additional cost to the taxpayers, and will help bring government closer to the people.” “Live broadcast/ streaming offers residents immediate access to town board debates and actions, even if work, health or transportation issues keep

them from the meetings,” Supervisor Lupinacci said. “It will also drive more residents to our website, offering increased opportunities to learn about town services.” For several years, the Town has recorded Town Board, Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals meetings and broadcast them on subsequent dates on the television channels. Videos of the meetings, indexed to agenda items, are usually posted on the Town’s website a day or two after the meetings. The indexed videos will continue to be posted on the website as soon after the meeting as possible.

Older People Improve Life For Others And Themselves (NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around. Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers. The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. The goal is to improve children’s literacy,

strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers. It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year. Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service.
