The Interview Process
College interviews are a very daunting concept. So far, I have taken part in three of these alumni interviews. In my very limited experience with the process, it seems that the purpose is to sell the college to you. In addition to asking you questions, the interviewer will go into depth about his experience at the specific institution. He wants you to want to go there. He wants you to follow in his footsteps as an alumnus of College X. Alumni interviews are meant to serve as a judge of your communication competency. Essentially, it has become evident that an interviewer is checking that you can
handle yourself in the real world. No college wants introverts. They want passionate, articulate students. They sift through countless applications to find these lucky boys and girls. If you are really serious about attending a college, an interview is a great way to express your interest. It gives an applicant the chance to blow an interviewer away with an extensive knowledge of the history of the university, the campus or the academics. But even if you have no current interest in College X, it never hurts to keep your options open. Inherently, an interview is nerve wracking. You are being

judged by a stranger that has the power to influence the rest of your life. Who wouldn’t be nervous? When it comes down to it, the interviewer is there to make you feel at ease. There is no need to be anxious, as the interviewer will often lead the conversation Oldfield and get you through the School students process. There is nothing you can do to guarantee admission, but an interview is a great place to start. The college is always looking for the best students an interviewer can provide. Middle in the Central recently
took part in the first round of the 26th Annual National Geographic Bee, sponsored this year by Google. Round one was a schoollevel competition in which students orally answered geographical questions. Seventh-grader Dylan Burgess took first place in the school bee and now has an opportunity to win a $25,000 college scholarship as he moves on in the competition.
Winners of the oral portion of the competition will participate in the second round, a written exam, administered in their home schools. Students who score in the top 100 of the written exam are eligible to compete at the state-level bee on April 4th. National finals, moderated by “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek, will be held on May 21st, and will air on television.

Winter Blahs By: Jamie Lynn Ryan January is probably my least favorite month of all. Apologies to those with birthdays or other milestones that fall within these 31 days, but honestly, it doesn’t seem like anything of any real significance happens in January – save for exorbitant snowfall totals, hazardous driving conditions and a general sense of post-holiday “blah-ness.” Am I wrong? Please tell me if I am. I would love nothing more than to find some redeeming quality for this last month. Other than the initial excitement of starting off a new year with a completely
blank slate, it’s been one endless procession of taking down Christmas decorations, attempting to pack away said decorations in some sort of orderly fashion and then realizing how very empty all the rooms now look. Of course, throw in a couple of significant snowfalls, the digging out that comes with it, one especially tedious fourhour commute home from work – and I’m about ready to hibernate with the groundhog until next spring. That’s quite enough of winter as far as I’m concerned. Perhaps if I was fortunate to sit home and admire the snow from a window until it all melted away… but until then, wake
me when the crocuses sprout. February, while still possessing great blizzard potential, at least brings with it the promise of spring, a progression toward warmth and flower blossoms and longer days… everything that January does not. And there is also, of course, our furry friend the groundhog, that poor little sleep-deprived creature whom we systematically awaken each February 2nd with the hope that his clairvoyance will predict an early spring. Seems sensible enough. And so we bid adieu to January. Goodbye and good riddance, with hopes for only good things come February.

Honoring MLK James H. Boyd Intermediate School students in the Elwood School District honored the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through poetry, song, photographs and Dr. King’s own words during an assembly on January 17th. The program’s masters of ceremonies were
Student Council President Daniel Rourke and vice president Alexandra Haddad. Students watched a video clip of photos of Dr. King, combined with audio clips of him addressing audiences of civil rights believers. Students also took to the podium and shared biographical presentations
of Dr. King, as well as excerpts from his “I Have A Dream” speech. In closing, a select third-, fourth- and fifthgrade chorus, led by music teacher Linda Romano, sang a harmonious version of the song that became an anthem for the civil rights movement, “We Shall Overcome.”

Winter Safety Tips As residents have been experiencing, winter can bring a variety of weather conditions ranging from light dustings of snow and scattered rain to severe storms and freezing temperatures. It is important to take extra precautions when braving the elements this season. As a provider of essential health care services, Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center is committed to keeping residents safe and healthy. Following outdoor winter safety tips will help avoid a trip to the emergency room. During the winter you should dress for the season: · Wear loose, lightweight, warm clothing in several layers. Trapped air between the layers acts as an insulator. Layers can be removed to avoid perspiration and subsequent chill. · Outer garments should be tightly woven, water repellent and hooded. · Always wear a hat or cap on your head since half of your body heat could be lost through an uncovered head. · Cover your mouth with a scarf to protect your lungs from extreme cold. · Mittens, snug at the
wrist, are better than gloves because fingers maintain more warmth when they touch other. Winter storm conditions and cold waves are the deadliest types of weather. Cold temperatures put an extra strain on your heart. Heavy exertion, such as shoveling snow, clearing debris or pushing a car, increase the risk of a heart attack. To avoid problems, remember these tips: · Stay warm, dress warm and slow down when working outdoors. · Take frequent rests to avoid over exertion. · If you feel chest pain, stop and seek help immediately. Prolonged exposure to cold temperatures can cause hypothermia, especially in children and the elderly. Watch for these symptoms: · Inability to concentrate · Poor coordination · Slurred speech · Drowsiness · Exhaustion · Uncontrollable shivering, followed by a sudden lack of shivering. If a person’s body temperature drops below 95 degrees Fahrenheit, get emergency medical assistance immediately. Remove wet clothing, wrap the victim in warm blankets and give warm,
non-alcoholic, noncaffeinated liquids until help arrives. People working or playing outdoors during the winter can develop frostbite and not even know it. There is no pain associated with the early stages of frostbite, so learn to watch for these danger signs: · First, the skin may feel numb and become flushed. Then it turns white or grayish-yellow. Frostbitten skin feels cold to the touch. · If frostbite is suspected, move the victim to a warm area and cover the affected area with something warm and dry. Never rub it! · Get to a doctor or hospital as quickly as possible. Please read your owner’s manual and follow these tips when operating a snow blower: · Never leave your snow blower running and unattended. · Make sure to discharge chutes or augers to clear stuck snow and ice. · Never add fuel when the engine is running and hot. · Make sure you know how to turn the machine off quickly. Remember to always use caution when dealing with outside elements.

Free Screenings Available Free lung cancer screenings using low dose CT scans are now available at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital for high risk smokers and former smokers. If lung cancer is diagnosed early there is a higher rate for successful treatment and survival. Individuals should consider having a screening if they are 55 to 74 years old and have smoked for 30 pack years or more and currently smoke or quit within the last 15 years. Pack years are calculated by multiplying the average number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day by the number of years a person has smoked. Lung cancer is the leading single cancer killer in the U.S. and cigarette smoking is the most important risk factor in the development of lung cancer. Smokers and former smokers should talk to their primary care physician to see if they qualify for a free screening. If you qualify, you will be given a prescription
for the CT scan and asked to contact Mather’s Lung Cancer Screening Program at 631.476.2803 to schedule a low dose CT scan. A national study found that patients who were diagnosed by screening with a low dose CT scan had a 20 percent reduction in lung cancer deaths as compared to those screened with standard chest x-ray. An influential panel of medical experts has recommended annual lung cancer screenings for high risk smokers and former smokers. The panel estimated the screenings could prevent as many as 20,000 deaths a year. Mather’s board certified radiologists use an advanced 320-slice CT scanner to perform the test at the lowest possible radiation dose. Mather records and provides you with a copy of your radiation dose. Should you need to return to Mather for another CT scan, we record that dose and track your cumulative exposure. Further, we
are accredited by the American College of Radiology and The Joint Commission, a national organization that assesses healthcare provider quality and patient safety. A suspicious nodule detected by the screening does not necessarily indicate lung cancer. According to current studies more than 95 percent of initially suspicious lung nodules are non-cancerous. Based on the findings, you may be referred to a specialist even if the diagnosis is not lung cancer. Qualifying Tournament School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) will present the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (FLL) Qualifying Tournaments on February 1st and 2nd at Central Islip Senior High School, which is located at 85 Wheeler Road in Central Islip, from 7 a.m. to 5
p.m. The tournaments are being sponsored by the Central Islip Union Free School District Board of Education and Craig G. Carr, Superintendent, Central Islip UFSD. This year’s challenge is NATURE’S FURYSM, where children in elementary and middle school will research and present their own creative solutions to one of the largest international
issues - natural disasters - which have affected nearly three billion people globally. Children and their coaches will utilize robots to solve a set of natural disaster missions. Some will include positioning an evacuation sign, clearing an airplane’s runway of debris, and developing solutions that could be used in the future. The FLL Tournament is
an international, annual sports-like challenge for children ages nine to 14 to test their creative robotic skills by using science and technology with the help of adult mentors. Currently, there are 23,000 teams from 80 countries worldwide that participate in FLL tournaments. On Long Island, 110 teams and more than 1,000 students will participate on
February 1st and 2nd. “We cannot wait to see what these students have in store for this year’s FLL tournament,” says Joani Madarash, Executive Director, School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. “It is exciting to see the creativity these children possess as they complete their missions that are required in the tournament. We hope
